Hey! I didn't see any local forums. I'm guessing there will be a place soon, but in the meantime I just thought people in the New York area could chat about city life or different things going on here.

Liz, I'm going to move you into the main GROUPS thread. It will be much easier for us to find you there when the time comes to add local areas.

Hi! I grew up in and now live in NJ, but commute to work in the city. Before we moved to the suburbs, I lived on the upper west side. Are you in Manhattan?

Liz

Yes, Upper West Side also. This weather is just too hot! At least at night it cools down a little bit.

Hi, Y'all!!

I'm a transplanted Southerner living on Long Island... LOVE the summers here, just awesome!!

We've got a nutty weekend coming up here...BIL is getting married this weekend, so we won't be watching the Macy's fireworks...though we'll have to next year, BIL just bought an apt. in the city on the 33rd floor...awesome views..

Today was the grossest day ever. I swear, I am not wearing anything to work but skirts again until October.

No big holiday plans here, just enjoying _not_ being in the office. :) Jealous of the Paris trip!

Lizzie Beth - Where on LI do you live?

Yesterday's weather was just gross...I love going into the subways on days like that...

We will be moving into our new house this weekend...have been with my in-laws for the last 6 months. Sold our house in Suffolk county in January and now finally are moving into our new one in Nassau.

I live and work in NJ (about 5 minutes from the GW bridge), but go to school in the upper west side every day... So I consider myself some sort of hybrid ;)

I was born and raised in Israel, though.

Hi! We're in Dyker Heights (Brooklyn, to you Manhattanites ;)) but both work in the city.

No big plans for the holiday weekend. We're having friends over for a BBQ on the 3rd and might head out to SIL's for the 4th but I REALLY don't want to.

Not to mention I have a bunch of freelance work I have to get done over the weekend. Oy!

.......................

We've really been enjoying the various free concerts going on in the parks this summer.

If you haven't already done it, you MUST attend the Philharmonic performance on the Great Lawn at Central Park (the Met opera also performs but it was early in June). It's the perfect excuse to have a picnic (including wine, wine and more wine) in the park with 200,000 of your closest friends. The last performance they also do fire works.

event specifics here. (http://newyorkphilharmonic.org/attend/season/index.cfm?page=eventsByMonth&dateRequest=07/01/2005&seasonNum=4)

we live in Brooklyn and normally both of us work in Manhattan but I am on maternity leave at the moment

This year we did the Met in Prospert Park in Brooklyn - think munchkin will prevent us from seeing the Philharmonic concert in PP this year :)

I don't have any plans for the weekend yet. Frankly I haven't had time to talk with DH about it. I do know we are going to the fireworks display on Monday, and probably a picnic. I'm so happy I have a three day weekend!!!

Is anyone planning on going to the Shakespeare in the Park? What else to you all do for fun? It doesn't have to be in Manhattan... I was thinking of going to Point Pleasant beach in NJ. DH said it's awesome. I've never been. Any suggestions on beaches?

Live in Queens, work in midtown.

For the weekend, my sister and her fiance are coming to visit. We're going to be so busy as we're going to MOMA, seeing a show, going to a comedy club and a bunch of other stuff.

On Monday night we'll watch the fireworks from the roof of our apt building in Queens. Last year we had the best view ever, it was amazing!

liz - i went to shakespeare in the park last year. it was great. though, plan for it to be an all day event as you have to come early in the morning to start standing in line. is it "as you like it" this year? if so, i am psyched as i love that one.

i live in far rockaway, queens. work in manhattan. though, my dh and i are scheming of ways to get back into uptown manhattan as i lived there for 4 years and loved it. i live right near the beach so i have been gettin my beach fix in. one big plus to living way out in the boonies is that it is rarely very hot here bc we get a nice breeze from the ocean. ita, i hate the hot days in manhattan as my place of work has no a/c.

We're still unsure of what we are doing this weekend.

As for Shakespeare in the Park, I've always gone at 7ish and received cancelled tickets. Since I don't have time to wait in line in the morning b/c of work. It's worked for me, but you have to make sure that if you don't get the tickets you aren't too disappointed.

Berry~ Just wanted to let you know that Target presents free tickets to all guests at MOMA every Friday from 4~8pm. I didn't know if you already had tickets or not. Have you ever been before?

I grew up in Far Rockaway!! Right on 19th street by the beach. I moved to the Bronx with FH almost 3 years ago. The commute was killing me. Instead of a 2 hour trip, now I only have a 30 minute trip. I miss the beach though, A LOT. Before I would open my bedroom window and hear the ocean. Now I hear the subway, lol. And nothing beats Rockaway during the summer. That ocean breeze is just amazing.

How cool :) I never meet anyone who's ever even heard of Far Rockaway these days.

catch - yeah, most people i know have heard of far rockway, but they all fear for my life bc this area has a pretty bad reputation. i am not one to believe what people say, and i checked it out myself including the crime stats and found out that it is one of the more safe areas of the city. go figure! i guess bc the population is so low here crime rates stay low. yeah, the commute really sucks!!! wow, you only lived a few blocks from where i am. tomorrow a few of my friends are coming out here and we are going to hit the beach. we just moved here in november, and i was really hating it it at first, but now that it is summer, i am happy. :D

My boss' birthday is coming up next week. I'm trying to think of something to get her. Last year I gave her a gc for a pedicure and Bath and Body Works products for the shower.

She is a mother of three. I take care of her kids so I'm sort of on a budget. Probably under $80. The family has always been generous with gifts for me and my husband, but obviously they know how much I make.

I saw some places have a manicure, pedicure, and an hour massage for $90. To me this is a great price but I don't know if the massage is done by a professional or not. Any suggestions?

TIA,

Liz I forgot to mention, what about a gc to Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon? Would she be into that? I got a prof of mine from grad school that (she had given up a bunch of her time to work on a project with me) and she loved it. That way she could also pick what she wants, massage, facial or mani/pedi.

Or what about a gc to a restaurant she likes, even if you can't afford it to be for the whole dinner. That might be nice.

Liz
07-04-2005, 05:09 PM
Hey! Berry, thanks for the suggestions! Do you know if there is a website for the Elizabeth Arden spa? I'll have to look that up.

Yes I've see the pictures, they are wonderful! You are lucky to have free access!

DH and I have started exploring NYC. We have been to most of the touristy things but we have been working and going to school and haven't had time to really experience what NYC has to offer. We finally walked across the Brooklyn Bridge! It was great! We went to the ice cream shop as the base of the bridge. Wow the view at the promenade was amazing! We also checked out the menu at The River Cafe. Has anyone ever been to it? It was expensive but I was wondering if the food was worth it. My parents 41st wedding anniversary is coming up at the end of this month and they are coming to NYC. I thought I would suggest that restaurant if anyone had good experiences here.

Hi everyone,

I'm a former Westchester girl :)

My best friend is looking for a studio in Manhattan (not too particular about neighborhoods but she works in Hoboken so downtown is better) and I was wondering if anyone knew of anything word of mouth-ish. Her max is $1300/month but she'd like to stay under that if possible.

Hiya,
Queens girl here! I live in Jackson Heights and work in Manhattan. Question for you all- has anyone been to a Summerstage concert yet? I used to go all the time years ago and I hear rumors that it's more restrictive now? Does anyone know if they still have "grass seating" there anymore or is it just chairs and benches?

I just got my anniversary gift and I am coming to New York in December. I would love some suggestions on where to go/what to do and all. We are going to see The Lion King one night and I HAVE to see the Christmas tree (that is the reason he chose Dec- it is my dream to see it). I am not sure of the hotel we are staying at.

Any suggestions? I would love to meet up with some people!

We are going to see The Lion King one night and I HAVE to see the Christmas tree (that is the reason he chose Dec- it is my dream to see it).

Are you planning to see the tree lighting ceremony or do you just want to see the tree in general? It's better not to go during the tree lighting because it's packed up the wazoo! The only chance to get close to it when it happens is by picking a spot hours before it happens. Funny enough, there are actually two famous trees here, the one at Rockefeller Center and the one at Lincoln Center. The latter doesn't get as much publicity.

If you're up for another Broadway show, I highly recommend Avenue Q! It's really original - think Muppets mixed with Rent. Another neat thing to do during the holidays is to look at the department store windows - Macy's, Bloomies, Saks. They're very creative with their holiday displays- each of them having their own themes.

Hi Camdynlyn, there's lots to do in NYC in December :) You can go skating at Rockefellar Center or Central Park. My fave thing is strolling down Fifth Avenue, window shopping. So much fun.

I don't recommend going to the tree lighting ceremony. I did that once and it was not a good experience. Too crowded, no bathroom, no food, 10 hours - standing. Not cool, lol.

Happy to help if you have any questions :)

Hey, gals! Look how this thread has grown! I'm back from Paris (so lovely!) and now we're doing research on neighborhoods to buy a place. Our budget is relatively small ($300K or less) so we've been looking at Kew Gardens or Staten Island. Looks like most of the places in Queens are Co-op and we'd rather a townhouse or condo. Any recommendations on Staten Island neighborhoods? bunny nose? Anyone? We've been searching Foxtons and finding a lot of places in Graniteville that seem nice and affordable. Is there something wrong with that neighborhood? Anything affordable closer to the ferry? Help!! We'll be borrowing a car and driving around there this weekend so we can check it out. Thanks!

bunny nose
07-21-2005, 07:17 AM
bijouparvin - I'd be happy to help you in any way I can. Staten Island has become a very expensive place to live. Are you looking for a detached, semi-attached, attached, condo, townhouse? DH and I have been looking for a few years and just can't afford what we want so have decided to stay in our rental- but also note that our rental is owned by his parents and will probably be ours one day.

Anyway- Graniteville can be OK in some areas. But I found that some agents try to stretch the areas. I called about a house once in Graniteville and the agent gave me the address of 379 South Ave. I laughed at him and said, "Wow, you are really pushing it. I grew up near there and that is considered Mariners Harbor, not Graniteville." He said, "Well, I guess there is nothing I can say to that." I mean the house was about 2 blocks from the projects. So you have to be careful about where in the area the house is.

Closer to the ferry? There is St George but it can be very pricey because of its location close to the ferry and the city. You can also look at Fort Wadsworth and Rosebank. They are pretty nice areas.

One thing you have to remember about our Island here is that there is a lot of traffic all the time. Residents have unofficially renamed our Staten Island Expressway as the Staten Island Parking Lot. If you come this weekend you will see. One little flat tire can cause a two mile jam. Never mind if there is an accident. Oh boy!! LOL But after you live here for a while you learn how to get around without hitting the highway at all.

If you give me addresses as opposed to areas I may be able to help more. Thats if you have them.

Good luck and let me know how I can help! ;)

I LOVE my ob/gyn, and recommend him to anyone who'll listen!!! I know you're looking for a woman, and there's a woman in his group, but he's by far the best and my favorite! Vishenka -- Shaun Biggers is my former ob-gyn. She is fabulous! But she doesn't, as I recall, take most insurance any more.

These days, I go to Robin Kalish. She is at the New York Hospital (UES, sorry), and is fabulous, as well! I really, really like her! She is in her 30s, and very cool, and quite sweet.

Dentitst -- I go to Alexander Antonakos, on 23rd between 7th and 8th (he also has a Connecticut practice). He does both regular and cosmetic dentistry. Most importantly, he is painless, and has a sense of humor about cowardly patients! Takes most insurance, and is a really nice guy.

I wanted to specifically ask NY girls, since either parts of the country don't really understand this concept.

We're going to DH's cousin's weddining in a few weeks and we're still debating as to how much cash to give them. For our wedding him and his parents gave us $750, so MIL insists that we all need to do the same ($250 a person). Our standard is $300 for both of us, which I think is perfectly fine. They'll get their $750 back from the IL's and BIL, so our stuff is extra anyway. Does that make sense or am I being too calculating?

angelgirl8
08-03-2005, 11:27 AM
vishenka...it's funny how new york is so different for these things! i absolutely agree with you on the $300. they'll definitely get the rest "made up" by the other members of your family!

DH and I were thinking of trying to plan a weekend away, sometime in the next month or so. Somewhere within 2-3 hours drive of NYC (we live in Queens).

We'd like it to be close to the beach and to not cost a fortune for a hotel, etc. We'll probably be chilling out and checking out the area.

Where have you been and what do you recommend?? Thanks in advance!

Hi!

Another NY girl here, Im in Brooklyn :)

Berry:

With regard to where Ive been, well Ive been everywhere!! But for some reason when I read your post www.soundviewinn.com popped into my head. We were there a few times. Its right on the beach in Greenport LI (Northfork) its not the Ritz and its ok in price. We had a great weekend there. Loved the views, the sunsets, the pool etc. The rooms are clean and although outdated it was fine with us. I made us breakfast every day and we ate out for lunch and dinner. We went to the vineyards had some tastings bought alot of wine. We went to the best restaurants around and had great food. Walked around(when it wasnt too hot) went shopping in town and to the other neighboring towns and at night sat on the beach watching the sun disappear.

Again its not a fancy place by any means but we had a great time. Nice and quiet and not overcrowded. Just so relaxing.

The catch is that there is traffic noise, but since we always went during hot weather the airconditioner did wonders to cover the noise when a car went by but truthfully since there is no real nightlife around there the cars hardly ever go by after a certain hour.

If you want to go to the Hamptons you drive to the very tip of Northfork(about 10 minutes from the soundview inn) and get on the ferry that takes you there!

Hope this helps:)

Have any of you used or heard of a NY-based company that helps sell stuff on eBay? I seriously need to rid my apt of unwanted but still new or almost new stuff and just don't have time to manage eBay myself. I'd love to drop everything off somewhere and then just come and collect my money. I remember reading that Chicago and LA have companies that offer something like this, but can't find anything in NY.

Vishenka... is the stuff high-end?

if so, check out Portero on eBay! they are based in westchester, but they sell for a lot of manhattan people too. :)

Vishenka69

Nektarine, I checked them out but their fees seem very high. I knew I'd have to pay a % of selling price but they also charge $20 insertion fee per item. Some of my stuff is high-end but not enough to be worth it at the end. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Vishenka69 There is a palce here on Staten Island that does that. It is called Auctions East. The website is auctionseast.com. I have not used them, nor do I know anyone who has, but there was a big write up about them in the local paper here and they seemed pretty good. The store isn't to far from where I live and I always see people in there.

Just a thought, hope it is good for you.
Good luck!

Hey guys!

I was wondering if any of you know about placement agencies that place nannies. I have been a nanny for the past 3 years but now the family that I have been working with is leaving the country so I would need a new job.

I got this job through word of mouth but right now the "word of mouth" situation is not really very promising. The two couples I have talked to aren't sure when they would need help because they are both pregnant and haven't had the kids yet.

So if any of you know of good and reliable placement agencies for nannies I would appreciate it.

Thanks. :)

Hello!

Another NYC gal subscribing here. I live on the UWS. We recently moved from the Columbia area where my hubby was attending B-school. We've moved a whopping 30 blocks and love our new neighborhood (and our old one too). I work in the Chelsea/Flatiron area.

Hey KD~

Welcome! I'm also living in the Columbia area. I'm glad you like the neighborhood. It's feels like a small town doesn't it?

So my friend from my hometown just moved up here and I wanted to take her out this weekend. I was thinking Highline because I've heard so much about it but I've never been. Anyone have any suggestions on a trendy restaurant/bar or any thoughts on Highline? Thanks!

kd 9.21.02
09-08-2005, 06:23 AM
Liz - Yeah, that neighborhood definitely feels like a small town.

It's not fancy or super special or anything like that, but our favorite place in the Columbia neighborhood for dinner or brunch is 107 West (Broadway between 107 & 108). We LOVE it and used to go about once a week. We still go up there sometimes to sit at the bar (with Andrew, the bartender) and watch Yankee games. Some favorites there... fajitas, nachos, fried chicken, salads, my DH loves the pasta, etc., etc. There's something for every taste on the menu so it's a great place to take guests if you don't know what they're craving.

Sorry but I don't know anything about Highline.

vishenka...
i used to live in the Bronx, and i agree - it certainly could use some more restaurants!
{although i still love belmont, don't get me wrong}

i know that last year or so, riverdale garden (http://www.theriverdalegarden.com/) , opened up and is supposed to be great. we went there once for lunch, and then realized that the place was packed with Fieldston school graduates, so we ended up leaving. it seemed like a good place to re-visit though.

if you like thai food, siam square (http://www.siamsq.com/) near Spuyten Duyvil is wonderful!

we used to eat at this place madison's on riverdale ave, but it's nothing really special, and still mostly italian. it was a good fall-back place.

honestly, when we lived there... we ended up going into manhattan for dinner, or heading into westchester!

Nektarine, is Siam Sq the one across the street from Century? We've been to that one and weren't very impressed. The Riverdale Garden looks good but a bit pricey for the Bronx. I guess we'll stick with Arthur Ave for now.

I've never stayed there but I just had a drink at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. If you're looking for BIG and centrally-located, this it.

I think most of us are without recommendations for you because as NY-ers we haven't stayed at hotels in the Times Square area.

If you're interested in the "hot spot" Meatpacking/club district, check out Hotel Gansevoort (http://www.hotelgansevoort.com/home_gansevoort.asp). Great penthouse bar - very hip.

Like the others, I'm an original NYer so I haven't stayed in any hotels there, but I now live in Italy and my boss travels back to NYC all the time for meetings. Our HQ is on Ave of the Americas near Times Sq. and he always stays in either the Marquis or the Plaza since that is where we get our corporate discount. We've also put our guys in the Grand Hyatt at Grand Central when either the Marquis or the Plaza was booked up. They all run about $150-$200 a night for us (but that's what the discount).

Milan. I've lived here for the last 7 years almost. The one and only time I was in Sicily (Messina) I got caught in the middle of a cops & robbers situation where they decided to run around the car I was in with all their guns out and all. It was like a scene from a movie! Not really too sure I'll be going back there again any time soon.

That said, you said you're originally from Sicily? Do you like living in the US better? We're debating a move back (well back for me at least... FH is Italian). The longer I stay here the less I want to move back.

if i'm not mistaken, the staten island ferry comes into whitehall terminal downtown?

if that's true, you can take the 1 train (red circle) up to 96th street and broadway. it looks like your doctor's office is at about 95th street and

it should only be a block or two on both ends of walking.

Hi,

I love Brooklyn. I would not move back to Sicily. Most of my family lives there, Grandmother, aunts, cousins etc....,but, visits are fine with me. I wish I could go more often. But, it is expensive and I hate to go on a plane with my daughter which is 19 months old for 8 hours.

Too bad you had a scary experience in Messina. I'm from Bagheria. It's beautiful there. I really miss the beaches there. I haven't been in the beach water since I went away to the bahamas last year.

I do not like New York beaches at all.

Yes, subway/bus fare is $2 and you need to buy a Metrocard. If you have to transfer from a bus to a subway or vice versa, that's just one fare (I think there's a 20-min. time limit or something like that). If you're going to ride the subway/bus four or more times in one day, buy the unlimited 1-day pass (it's $7 I believe).

Liz

I think Woodbury is worth checking out but it depends on what you need and where you're coming from. I'd also suggest getting there right when the stores open, after 12-1pm the place becomes a zoo. For some things I prefer going to NJ outlets, but some stores are only available at Woodbury.

I just wanted to come by and ask if anybody had any suggestions for a restaurant within a reasonable distance from Freeport (on Long Island).

DH is from NY and we figured it would be easier to send a gift card for a nice night out to eat to his Aunt and Uncle for the holidays, not to mention gift cards are so much easier to send cross country. The only thing is that he can't think of good places. I don't want to get them a certificate for anything in Manhattan, I'd rather it be on Long Island to make it easy for them.

I would appreciate any suggestions! I tried looking up places by Roosevelt Field (because other than Floral Park, that's really all I know), but I'm at a loss because I don't know the area well enough to know what I am looking at. Thank you so much! :)

Hey ladies:

I'm from the Upstate and am planning an quick trip into the city this weekend to visit a friend.

Generally I drive down and pay an arm and a leg for overnight parking in a garage. This time I'd like to park outside of the city and take a train in. I'm assuming I can do that at any communter station, is that correct? And, I keep thearing from my SIL that there are specific park-n-ride type places that cater to vistors, not commuters. Is that the case?

TIA!

tlew12778
12-06-2005, 07:33 AM
I've never heard of that. I mean, in White Plains, you can park your car and decide whether or not to take the bus or the train. But it's a general parking lot run by the city so you pay the meter and then go get your ticket from metro-north (it's a huge multi-level structure and you can pay for a 12 hours or more through the machine). They're two totally separate companies so two totally separate tickets. I doubt they have some kind of visitors package available.

You didn't ask this, but personally I prefer the Harlem line over the New Haven line. Harlem line stops are White Plains, Katonah, Golden's Bridge, etc. New Haven Line stops are Harrison, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, etc. I always feel like a bunch of ruffian kids ride the NH line and I hate putting up with them.

Hi ladies! Another NYer here. I live in Westchester and work in midtown, just north of the Empire State Building.

Amaye, I work in real estate and know a bunch of brokers, so I'll ask around and see if I can find a mover referral for you. When I moved within Queens a few years ago we used something with "American" in the name, but I can't remember exactly what. I'll look at home and see if I still have anything with their name on it. They were okay, but they added on a lot of charges for things like boxes, tape, etc., that I had to fight over. It was my first experience with movers and I was naive enough to not get a written estimate first. Live and learn. Anyway, I'll see what I can find for you! :)

Hi Ryansgirl :)

I'm a born and bred New Yorker who can't afford to live in Manhattan, lol. I work there but I live in the Bronx, a 30 minute subway ride. Certain areas of the Bronx are nice and safe ;) If you like the suburbs, Long Island and Westchester are just a train ride away, about a 30-60 minute commute, depending on how far out you are. The Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens are getting pricey, but certain areas are still reasonable and safe.

I'm sure that was no help at all. :D

Hey! We live in Manhattan. There are alot of safe areas to live in. I would travel up here and see which neighborhood suits you and your DH the best. We live on the West Side and the neighborhood suits Dh and I perfectly. A great neighborhood could change into a sketchy neighborhood a matter of a few blocks. It also depends on your price range for apartments. Good luck if you move here. It's a great city. We love living here. If you have any questions PM me!

ryansgirl - DH and I were in a very similar situation when we moved to NYC from CA three years ago. We were clueless and just happened to stumble onto an awesome neighborhood.

It's true that the nicer areas of Brooklyn and Queens are not cheap either but you certainly get more space for the money. We live in a really great area of Brooklyn called Cobble Hill. It borders on a few other nice nieghborhoods called Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Park Slope, and Brooklyn Heights. Basically, if you see an apartment listed in any of those areas, you can count on them being pretty safe. Just watch out for places that claim to be in Park Slope but aren't really. Just because something is near the park (Prospect Park) doesn't mean it's actually in the lovely neighborhood of Park Slope. In Queens, most of the people I know live in Astoria. Some live in Forest Hills and Kew Gardens, which are nice areas but sort of a hike if you're working in Manhattan.

Hope that helps!

My FH and I just made the move from NC to NYC in August. We ended up finding a great apartment in Windsor Terrace (one of the neighborhoods bording Park Slope). It's really nice because we are only a few blocks from both Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetary.

I second being careful of places that claim to be Park Slope. I flew up for a weekend a month before we came and went to see lots of apartments. Apartments rent fast and am so happy with the one we chose. Parts of Brooklyn are gorgeous.

Thanks so much for the valuable information! I think I will take ya'lls advice and come up there this year to look at the areas suggested. I'm relieved that there are nice places outside of Manhattan.

Have any of you ever met a person from Dallas transplanted to New York? Do they like it? I've heard you either love it or you hate it... =)

I had a Dallas friend whose family was moved to NY for her dad's company and they lived in my hometown in CT (a NY suburb there) and they loved it. But that was in a very pricey town.

Does anyone have a tax advisor (preferably in Manhattan) that they would recommend? My tax situation has gotten confusing, and I think I need some professional advice to sort it out...

Any recommendations for Windsor Terrace? Restaurants? Grocery Stores?

So neat to meet someone else from Windsor Terrace on CC!

I wasn't sure if I should post this in this thread, but I've seen you get quite a few travel-related questions, so here goes...

I'm heading up to NYC this weekend with some friends and family. Staying at the Omni near Rockefeller Center. We're looking for a good family-style Italian restaurant for dinner Saturday night. We have a reservation at Carmine's, but not until 9:30pm, so I'm looking into alternate options. Do you ladies have any other ideas?

TIA!

There are two Carmine's locations in the city so you could try the other one for an earlier ressie. But usually they're hard to get. We live about 10 blocks from the UWS location so my husband usually runs down there an hour before we want to go (when we haven't been able to get a ressie) and puts our name on the list since they leave about 1/2 the restaurant open to walk-ins.

Thanks, kd. I did call both, and nothing until 9:30 at either. We made the ressies at the 44th St. location, just in case. Good to know about the walk-ins though.

I found this place Tony's online, and was able to get in for 8pm. Anyone familiar with it? http://www.tonysnyc.com/

I just posted this in the NY doctors thread, but I don't know if anyone looks at that.

I'm looking for someone who does acupuncture either in NYC or Queens.

Thanks!

Hey! My husband also goes to the one in Manhattan. You can request the teachers, but it is more money. DH goes to one of the students. If you are a student yourself you get a $10 discount with id.

HOW YOU CAN HELP: You never know who has connections, ideas, or leads. I figured that if I put my story out there –someone might have some thoughts. You can post here, send me an IM, a PM, or an email! Thanks in advance. (Cross posted here and in the house hunters thread.)

THE STORY: After 6 weeks of working on getting a condo here in Brooklyn, we sent the seller an email asking if he thought he was going to get the condo financials and other stuff together for the closing on June 1st. He responded by telling us that he wasn't coming back from Israel until the end of May and that he thought we should rent the apartment until everything got in order. We told him that we were not interested in renting from him and that if he could not get everything together, we were no longer interested. It was the wee hours of the morning in Israel, and he wrote back to say: "I'm still working on it, give it a chance and concentrate in a vary important job you've got this week Good luck" (He was talking about the fact that I am 39 weeks pregnant and expecting a baby any day now…)

This was after we told him that his inability to get everything has stopped this process cold. We then said that "since you cannot start again until the end of May- we are no longer interested."

So, where does this leave us --aside from extremely frustrated? Well, we have the mortgage ready --and we can possibly find another place and get everything together by June 1st.

We can re-up our lease for another year. However, I found a few interesting leads on craigslist and nytimes.com –and my husband went to visit a few real estate brokers in Brooklyn. He saw a place he really liked, but like most it is outside our price range.

THE DETAILS:

Requirements:
• 2 or 3 bedrooms
• Square footage of at least 850
• 2nd Floor walk-up or has elevator if higher
• Common charges of less than $400/month
• Taxes of less than $200/month (if there is an abatement, when does it end?)
• Should be a condo unless the co-op does not require approval
• Ability to add closing costs in
• Price less than $500K (total)
• Brooklyn locations: Boreum Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Fort Greene, Park Slope, Red Hook, Windsor Terrace --and general vicinity

Additional Things that would be nice:
• An additional bedroom
• An additional bathroom
• Parking space

Where we have looked thus far:
• Craigslist.org
• Nytimes.com
• Variety of real estate brokers websites (http://www.smalltownbrooklyn.com/marketplace/realestate.html,
Corcoran.com, adshaye.com, etc.)

That's so awful about your condo falling through. I live in Windsor Terrace so I'll have a look around when I go for a walk - maybe I will see something that isn't listed. (Congratulations on buying though! I can't wait to be done with the renting stage.)

That would be fabulous! The condo my DH looked at today was in Windsor Terrace, and we are definitely interested in the area. Let me know if you encounter anything of interest!

Thanks again.

I'm so sorry about that falling through, esp with the baby coming!

I just wanted to offer my support. Also, you are really wise to get the info out, I have several friends who found places (to rent) by emailing everyone in their email list and asking them to forward to everyone they know.

Also, I don't know your current situation, but it may be worth it to talk to your landlord, etc. about a month-to-month lease for the time being. This worked for my husband and I several years back. If you are good renters, it usually isn't a problem.

Thanks....It was disappointing --but at least we learned a great deal in the process. I think that we'll most likely end up signing another lease on our apartment for this year --and saving up more for a down payment. As I posted in my journal (on LJ): How does one in our situation (2 professional parents) afford a 3 bedroom condo (a block away from us) for $750K + maintenance without help from family, the benefit of having sold something recently, or substantial savings (many people going for these places are 20 years our seniors)?

i completely understand your frustrations. we had to live practically in the middle of nowhere (yes, it does exist even in nyc) to afford anything. its frustrating when i have to commute over an hour each way yet we are by no means a low income family since we are in one of the highest tax brackets. sometimes i wish we had rich family so we could afford more, but then i don't think we'd appreciate what we have so much.

This thread hasn't been bumped up in ages, so I thought I would bump it up.

My DH and I are going to be relocating and are trying to help our landlord find someone to take our apartment. We have an amazing apt in Sunnyside Queens. Apt is very affordable, rent stabilized, only 2 blocks from the subway and 15 mins from midtown.

PM me if you'd like more details or if you have a friend(s) looking for a place.

Thanks so much!

Hi Ladies. I'm getting desperate so thought I'd post here. I'm looking to order individually-wrapped baby shower cookies. Crumbs doesn't have the right design options and Magnolia doesn't do decorated cookies. Any suggestions? I've called a place in Greenwich, CT that is fantastic, but at $4.50/cookie seems way too expensive.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA!

Anyone know anything about Lucky Changs? I think thats what it is called. My cousin has asked me to make a scrapbook for a gift for a friend who is getting married. Her bachelorette party is at Lucky Changs. I'd like to use some ideas from it in a layout. Do they have a website? I looked but can't come up with anything. Thanks

DH and I are relocating to NYC in three weeks  Does anyone have a recommendation for a reputable broker? We're looking to rent in Brooklyn (preferably Williamsburg) or Queens (Astoria), but we're flexible. If you happen to know one that has a great reputation or that you've used before, please let me know or PM me! I am freaking out a little bit :o

The Corcoran Group (among many others) is reputable. My neighbor is a broker with them, but I think he only does sales.

It looks like my husband will be getting a job working in the Upper East Side (currently he works in Philadelphia) . Since we live in Western NJ (on the Delaware River) and it much too far to commute, he plans to rent an apartment and stay there part of the week. Can someone provide some information on the area around Mt. Sinai Hospital or recommend any websites that I can get more information. Thanks!

Dizzy - I grew up in Astoria but have lived in the Boston area for 10+ years now. Did you end up in Astoria?

twinnyme: We actually ended up in Park Slope and really, really like it. Astoria would be a better commute for me, but I think would be a bit too far for DH. We've visited a good friend who lives there and we definitely like the area! What a great place to grow up!

This is probably a long shot, but has anybody been to or known anyone who has been to The Cardinal Club? (the private "restaurant" in someone's backyard in the East Village) I really really want to go, but you have to get a recommendation from somebody who has already been. Probably because they don't want crazy people coming to their home, which I understand. I think this place sounds awesome and I am desperate!!
