I liked this thread a lot on the WC. Especially now since I'm looking for a few accessories...

Speakers... Does anyone have speakers for their iPod? I'm looking at the Bose ones, but it got a lot of poor reviews on Amazon.

Radio player... Don't know the best way to describe this. I bought the Monster radio transmitter but the sound isn't the greatest. What's the best way to play your iPod in the car?

I don't have speakers for my iPod, because I'll just play iTunes on my computer if I want to listen to music.

I use the iTrip for my car, and it works great!

Oh - I have the pink mini 4GB (I got mine before the 6GB came out) and I love it!

What is itrip exactly? Is it a FM transmitter? I have been searching all over for an FM transmitter to play my ipod in the car. I have checked out Belkin's FM transmitters but I have seen mixed reviews so I am kind of hesitant to get them.

Yes - an iTrip is an FM transmitter, and it rocks! :)

I haven't had any issues with mine. My BF uses a Belkin something-or-other for his Palm pilot, and it goes in and out quite frequently.

Yes, iTrip is an FM Transmitter. I have the Monster FM transmitter (which also charges at the same time) but I find that the sound quality stinks.

I just bought DH Altec Lansin InMotion IM3. It's awesome. Read the reviews on Amazon...that's why I got it. And the best part is how portable they are. Great to bring to a hotel and travel with. The sound is really great too for how little they are. AND they aren't too hard on the wallet.

Totally agree-- thank heavens my car has a cassette deck behind the navigation. I NEVER thought I'd be thankful of something so old-school.

I hear really poor things about the iTrip product, but I really think it depends on where you live for the frequency.

DH has an iTrip and there have been a couple times the frequency hasn't been right. But I'd say 98% of the time it works great. It's also nice that you can just bring it where ever you want that has a radio :D

My dad gave me the Bose speakers for Christmas -- I like them a lot. What did the bad reviews say on Amazon? That said, I saw the Harmon Kardon ones in Costco a couple weeks ago, and they looked really cool.

Tippy -- I had the Belkin transmitter before, and it only broadcast on four channels at the lower end of FM. One of the four options worked okay near my home, but not near work (only a ~15min drive away). I think the iTrip can scan the whole range, though.

If your car has a connection for a cd player, you can buy a module that connects your Ipod directly to the stereo. Monster makes one for ~$350 (it has an optional lcd that will show you the song title). I have one from crutchfield.com that was ~$190. It's pretty good -- no song title display, but you can have five playlists (for cd's 1-5), and then cd6 is all your songs on your ipod. You can go forward and back in the playlist with the stereo buttons. I'm pretty happy with it.

I got a cassette adapter for the car--it's white and I got it at Target, but I can't remember who makes it. It was $20, IIRC. Awesome!

ETA: The cassette adapter I have is by Belkin. :)

I have the Monster FM transmitter, the one w/o the charger, and I haven't had any problems with the sound quality. It plays through my car stereo, though, so I would imagine that would have an affect? I have the old school 10GB ipod, but my husband has a newer 20GB one and they both play fine w/ the adapter.

One of my friends has iTrip, but she hesitated in getting it b/c it has such bad reviews. She hasn't had any problems so far, though.

I use mine mostly for commuting (via train/bus) and traveling, so I don't use speakers. If I want to listen to it w/o the headphones, I listen to it on the computer. But speaking of headphones, my husband and I both have these, and they are fabulous:

I'm so sad. I bought my Ipod mini (6gb) at the end of march and used it about 25 times total. Never dropped it, kept it in a leather case and it has not one scratch on it. Well, I went to turn it on last week and on the screen is a little picture of an ipod with a sad face on it and next to that is a little warning triangle. I tried rebooting it etc but nothing worked. I looked on some help message board and found that if you get that symbol it means something is wrong with your hard drive and it needs to be serviced. Has anyone else had this problem or heard of it before??
I'm so upset after all the money I spent on the ipod and accessories. I took it to the apple store on my lunch break but I didn't have enough time to stick around for one of their specialists to look at it. I guess on my day off I'll drop by and hope that they don't tell me it needs to be shipped back to the company b/c that would suck. I hear that would take like 6-8 weeks. In the meanwhile, I hate going to the gym b/c I no longer have my "workout mix" music to motivate me, lol.

SusieQ, go back when you have time to wait. Mine would freeze up after 5-10 minutes whenever it was running off the battery. I had to wait 30 minutes for them to look at it, and eventually, they offered to replace it (you might have to be patient while they try all the different stuff).

Mine had the engraving on the back -- if I had wanted to keep that, I would have had to send it in for a replacement (and they said it would be 6-8 weeks). However, they gave me the option to just take the replacement. No more engraving, but the "new" one (they did say it's probably refurbished parts) is just fine, and my original one year warranty covers it.

We have this Bose system:
http://www.bose.com/images/home_entertainment/products/p_companion_m.jpg
Which we actually don't use with our computer, but just have sitting out in our living room to use with our iPods. My mom bought it for us as a Christmas present - and she said that when she compared it side-by-side with the other Bose system that is designed for iPods (SoundDock), this one had better sound. We love the sound on this system.

We also have the Lansing InMotion system that someone posted earlier - we love the portability of that system.

I have an iTunes adapater for my car, but the antenna on my car is broken and it leads to questionable sound issues. Fortunately, my car is old school with a cassette player, so I just use my old cassette adapter - which I actually like more because then I don't have deal with my iTunes adapter when I take it off the iPod.

Thanks, I plan on stopping by the store tommorow during my day off. I'm hoping that if it's beyond repair they will just give me a replacement right there in the store b/c I'm so impatient and I can't imagine having to wait 6-8 weeks just for them to send me the new one. Thanks again. ~Sue

I listened to the Bose speakers at a Bose store and was instantly in love. I covet them!

I have the iTrip. It works great for what I need it for - long road trips in rural areas. When I get into the city, though, it's sometimes hard to find a static-free station.

BTW, I have the blue mini 4GB. I bought it shortly before they came out with the 4GB and 6GB with a longer battery life. My main complaint is the battery life. But DH and I love our iPod so much that we're planning on getting another so we can each have one. :)

I LOVE this thread, since I just got a brand new ipod yesterday!! However, I think I may be sending it back. Not because I don't love my 6 GB mini ipod, but because Apple came out with a new ipod today! They are introducing 3 new ipods: 20 GB, 40 GB and 60 GB. All will have 2 inch color screens with picture capabilities. Price is only $50 more than the mini. I love the ipod so much, that I think I could really have fun with all of the extra memory and options!!

I'm loving my Mini, but the battery has recently crapped out. It lasted for about an hour yesterday. If I take it to the Apple store, will they replace the battery or anything? How much does that cost?

I don't have the extended warranty, unfortunately. I guess I expected the battery to last longer than 6 months. :(

Hey everyone! I recently got my iPod (the 20gb one) and I *LOVE* it. I also got the iTrip (FM transmitter) and I use my iPod in my car and at work with the iTrip and play it off my radio at work. Don't know how I ever lived without it..

I've been toying with the idea of getting an iPod for probably about a year now. I haven't gotten one yet because I'm not sure what I would do with it. At work I either listen to online radio or CDs that I have recorded onto my computer. But, now, I'm faced with the long airplane trip to Hawaii and I'm thinking that it would be really great to have one.

So, should I get the iPod Mini or 20GB one that has photo storage too (and games and a calendar)? I'm pretty sure I don't need 20GB of music - I don't even think I'd use up 4GB on the Mini, but it might be nice to put pictures on there (for what - I have no clue).

And the more overall question: How do you iPod? When do you use it? What do you use it for?

TIA!

For my Ipod (that's broke at the moment:() I also use the cassette adapter for my car. It works great, sound is clear as can be

When I first got my IPod I looked into seperate speakers b/c they never mentioned that you didn't really need them. Then I realized that all you needed was an audio cord adapter (which I got from Walmart for $3.99) similar to the pic below and I just hook it right up to my ipod headphone jack and then to the back of my home stereo and the sound is perfect.

Unless you have some burning need or desire to use or iPod for photo storage, I would advise you to save money and get the mini.

I use my iPod to listen to music all day at work, while I'm driving back and forth to work in the car, when I'm driving to my parents house (about an hour and a half drive), when I'm traveling, and when I'm sick (I keep my guided relaxation on it). I also keep all kind of text notes to myself, such as information about my chronic migraines (doctors, contact info., medicines, etc.), bills, to do lists, and calendars.

Hi gang!

I have been dying for an iPod for years now... ridiculous not to just get myself one after all this time, but what are you going to do... I think I've been sub-consiously holding out for someone to get one engraved for me.

Well, my b-day is around the corner... and my DH has been asking what I want... Defintely and iPod, especially since my commute has expanded from a 5 minute walk through the Boston Public Garden to an hour on public transportation, including one bus and two T trains.

At any rate, I am still trying to get a good idea of exactly which one I want. I am a graphic design student and digital photo junkie who might actually be interested in transporting large Adobe files and JPEGs as well as just listening to music. I'd also want to use it for exercise and stuff too.

So, I probably want the big one, right? Or do you think I'd prefer a mini (lime green please) and then purchasing a seperate mini-drive?

Regarding either... I am a MAC person at home and a PC person at work... DH is engineer PC person all the way... If I get the MAC version iPod, is it still compatible with the PCs? ie., can I store pics and songs from my MAC and then plug in the iPod to a PC and download them?

Thanks for the help!
Cheers,

What do you all think of iPod minis? I got a lot of money for my birthday this year, put most of it away, but kept a few hundred to use for fun. I've been thinking about getting an iPod. Probably a mini (and either blue or silver!).

1,500 songs seems like a good amount. But can I store more on iTunes? If I upload all my CDs and download the others I like, it'd definitely be more than 1,500 songs. So could I have more on iTunes and do a rotation sort of thing?

Also, I'd love to use it to work out, but I have spaghetti arms, and have heard and seen many people complain about their armbands being too loose. Any recommendations?

Can you do anything else with a mini? I don't need it for anything but music, but I'm just curious what some other options are.

Also, how often do these things break down? And then what do you do to fix them?

I have a silver mini 6gb (holds 1500 songs approx). So far I only have about 500 songs on mine and that's already like 24hrs worth of music. Basically when you plug in your IPod to your computer it is going to upload all of the songs that you have on Itunes. I think you can store more songs in your "my music" files on your computer and then rotate them that way. (there might be an easier way but I'm not that much of a computer genius so I'm not sure)

As far as breaking, I am having a problem with mine right now (the hard drive is screwed up so it won't work at all). I just bought it in March and have taken extra good care of it. In order to get it fixed you can bring it into an apple store and then they'll either exchange it or fix it there. You can also mail it in from home. I went to bring mine today but they had a 6hr waiting list so I plan to do it satruday after work (the long wait was probably b/c Apple only has one store in Manhattan so for the thousands of ipod users in the city this is the only place to get things fixed...as far as I know). On the other hand my 10 yo neice has one which has been dropped, scratched and man-handled in every way possible and hers works just fine. I think maybe I got a lemon or something.

The accessories are pretty expensive in my opinion. I bought the charger (which surprisingly it does not come with), the cassette adadpter for the care and a cute little pin leather case. I don't have the armband; when I've brought it to the gym I hold it in my hand while stretching, tuck it in the front of my sports bra when I'm on the machines and on the treadmill or elyptical (sp?) I just stick it in the water bottle holder right on the machine and it's fine. I have seen people with the armbands including some really slim girls but I can see that being a problem b/c I believe they are one size fits all.

Even with the problems I'm having I highly recommend them b/c it's such a great way to carry all of your music, you can make play lists and you dont have to worry about lugging around a big cd holder and constantly changing cds.

Wow, I just realized that was a really long reply, lol. Sorry. ~Sue

Yes, you can have as many songs/albums as you like on iTunes and set it so that you update your iPod manually. Cliff and I share iTunes on the same computer, but have different iPods and different listening preferences, so this is how we do ours.

If you have a Mac computer, you can also use your iPod as a calendar and a place to keep notes. Regardless, you can use it as an alarm clock and as storage.

No, you would not be able to do this. I am the same way (Mac at home, PC at work), and I sure do wish you could do this.

So you might be just as well off to get the fun colored mini and a separate storage device. Perhaps even just a memory stick would be a good option for you.

Also, you might consider the .Mac membership, which gives you iDisk and would allow you to upload pictures and files and access them at work or from any other computer. It's really great!

iPod question...

I have a new 60gb iPod Photo. I don't want auto-sync (for a variety of reasons), but I couldn't figure out how to get any of my music on it in manual sync, so I switched it to auto-sync and stuck it on from my portable HDD that I use to back things up, then I switched it back to manual, disconnected it from the laptop, and then disconnected the portable HDD. Problem is, I plugged it back into the laptop, and now all the music is gone off the iPod... apparently when it couldn't find it in the iTunes library, it deleted it off the iPod. (I think that's what happened?) In any event, I don't want to have to store my 13mb of music on my tiny 20gb laptop HDD--that's why I got the 60gb iPod--but it seems that I can't use it otherwise. I'm so confused, and I don't know if it's user error or there's a problem with the iPod. I don't have the tutorial installed (no CD-ROM on my laptop--I had to install all the iPod software via download) so I can't fiddle with that, and I don't know that it'd help much anyway, as I can't seem to find much clearly useful info on the iPod website.

Help????!!!!!!

I have an iPod question too. I think it's a lot simplier than KristieW's. Hopefully someone will be able to help one of us.

I have created some playlists and gotten them onto my iPod (4GB Mini Blue :) ). The thing is I'm horrible at creating playlists and really I just want some of my favorite songs to randomly play. I thought I could turn on shuffle on my iPod and then select a playlist and it would shuffle the playlist, but it seems to shuffle ALL of my songs. Since I have a wide variety of songs, a shuffle of ALL won't work well (I don't want to hear Pink Floyd then Britney then a song from the Wicked soundtrack - that would drive me crazy). I haven't played around with the auto playlists that much yet, so I'm not sure how detailed I can get in my selections. Any suggestions? Can I shuffle just a playlist?

As long as you keep it on manual updating, I don't think that should happen. But honestly, I'd call Apple and ask them how to do what you want to do (or if it is possible). You just got the iPod, so it's well within the time frame for them to assist you.

Is the music you uploaded still on the iPod if you leave the setting on automatic updating? Just curious.

Kristie, I think I might have found an answer for you on iPodLounge:

How do I stop the iPod from auto sync’ing when connected to iTunes? If I auto-sync, I’ll lose some of the music that’s only on my iPod! (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/faqs/answers/how-do-i-stop-the-ipod-from-auto-syncing-when-connected-to-itunes-if-i-auto/)

While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys in Windows (CMD + Option keys on a Mac). This will stop the iPod from auto sync’ing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.

Then you can right click on the iPod icon in iTunes’ source column and select iPod Options, then check the box that says “Manually manage songs and playlists”. You can now manage your library without losing any songs on the iPod.

If not, try asking your question one of these places:

DH uses the cassette adapter and it works great. My cassette player has not worked since the car came off the dealer lot--despite being "fixed" three times under warranty. I finally gave up on it. We tried a few transmitters but the air is too crowded around here, we get all the stations from both Philly and Scranton. It's mostly DH's toy anyway.

We have the 20Gig and DH wants a bigger one. He has 2,000 songs on it so far, and he's only put on about 1/4 of his CD collection. Gotta love musicians.

I have a question about the difference between the new 20GB iPods and the 6GB mini's. They obviously hold more songs and I think have a longer lasting battery. I've also found that they have a color screen and can hold pictures.

So... for a girl like me who probably could get enough music for my listening enjoyment on the iPod mini - why would I get the 20GB? I don't really understand the picture thing. I could download pictures I had taken on my camera and put them in the iPod to share with people when I see them? Or is it more for storage of digital pictures?

As much as I'm not sure if I need the new one, the difference in cost really isn't that much. I just don't know if I'd use the extra features.

I'll use it mainly in the car, some at home, and possibly at work. (Unfortunately I'm a bum & don't go to the gym! :( ) So, which should I get?

Is the 6GB iPod Mini really that much better than the 4GB Mini? I haven't yet gotten one, though I want one before the summer's out. Just wondering whether my $50 would be well invested and why, or whether the 4GB would be just fine.

A couple of questions:

1. I have an FM transmitter. My car has a high quality sound system but I've found the sound quality with the IPOD and transmitter is not that great. I'm assuming it's because it's still just the radio. Any ideas on how to get better sound quality?

2. I bought one of the neoprene clear covers (I have the 20GB). It was filthy within like one week. Just from being in my backpack and in a car compartment. Anyone have a good cover? Is there something that can go over the screen AND the dial?? I worry about the dial wearing out because it's getting banged about.

Other than that there are some great tips here. I was concerned what to do when I didn't need my IPOD to match my Itunes.

Bee I got the 20GB simply because I wanted my entire CD collection on it plus any CDs I plan to buy in the future. Even then I only filled up half of it.

DH & I both got Ipods for our birthdays (they're 8 days apart) from MIL. I got a pink 6 gig mini and DH got a bigger one 20 or 30 GB that does pictures too. We haven't used them yet because we have to a. install Tiger OS on our computer (which also means we have to save all the tons of pictures we have on the drive to CD) so that we can B. install the newest version of Itunes and then C. load all of our CD"s into it. We haven't gotten around to that yet. We don't have high speed internet so for now we will mostly be using it for listening to our CD collection and not downloaded itunes. Which is still awesome.

I crocheted myself an IPOD cozy in pink variegated cotton yarn. It is so cute!!! I got a casette adapter from Target for my car stereo. Can't wait to start using it!

We currently have a 20GB iPod but I want something small to work out with. Or should I just spend the extra $100 and get a 4GB mini?

We use iTrip and it works well in the SF Bay Area (where we currently live) but does not work as well in the Seattle area (where we are moving to next month).

I have one! :D

I got it for my birthday a month ago and love it so far. I use it every day at work. I need to get my DH to put some more songs on it for me (I am too busy with our baby!). :p

It's so lightweight and small and I just stick it in my laptop's USB port to charge it.

DH got me the ipod shuffle for my birthday and I love it! It is so easy to take everywhere with me. I listen to it everywhere-working out, at work, commuting, walking.
This was my first ipod. I was kind of intimidated by the other ones since I have a pc, but the shuffle was a piece of cake to hook up. And for me-the amount of songs it holds is perfect-I have about 220 songs on there right now.

Oh my gosh, I love my ipod, and its ironic, because I don't love music... like some.

Its nice to just have all my cds on one device that I can play in the car!!! Then I can use my itrip (which works awesome where I live) and no longer have to lug around ALL my cds!!! Its sweet!:)

I have only 128 songs on my ipod, but I have to update it- maybe tonight. I need th car charger, with the mini, the battery drains with in two hours :(

A couple people asked about cases... I have an iSkin (http://www.iskin.com) and I love it. It's durable, it has a screen protector so the screen doesn't get scratched, and it's easy to carry. As a matter of fact, I dropped my iPod at the gym a couple weeks ago, right on its face... I cracked my screen protector but the iPod is just fine. I attribute that directly to the case. :)

Unfortunately, I have one of those 3rd gen. iPods with the wanky battery that doesn't charge fully or stay charged... I filled out my settlement papers so hopefully I'll hear back soon. It'd be nice if they replaced it with a brand new one. :)

My sweet B gave me my Birthday present early!!!

He got me a 60GB iPod with my new name engraved on the back... I am thrilled as I am a total photo junkie as well as into music and now I'm listening to books on the way to work as well... happy happy commuter I am!

I will be able to move files for school, manage our Christmas Card list and look at cute pictures my DH on the train... Very happy with big iPod Vs the mini for my interests. I downloaded iTunes on my PC at work and listen to internet radio all day too.

Quick question though...

I was messing around with the software on my mac at home and set it to manual update once. I got the pop-up box saying that I would have manually "eject" the iPod to get it to stop displaying the Red "NO" sign so I could unplug it when the update was complete.

Well, I've since changed that option back so it only updates the folders I checked and I still have to manually eject it. Is something wrong? Or is it something like since I've set it to manual once, I will ALWAYS have to manually "eject" it?

I get the "iPod update is complete" message in my iTunes window, but then the iPod just keeps blinking away...

Also if I let the computer go to sleep, it will occainsionally start back up and start to update the iPod again... annoying.

Anyone else have these issues?

Cheers,
Golightly

Sorry if I'm confusing anyone.

School started up this week, and I was quite excited to get all my iTunes library onto my (new) computer. But of course, after I installed iTunes and plugged my iPod in, all the music was deleted from my iPod because there was nothing in iTunes. Doh.

Once I got back home, I managed to get everything back onto the iPod, but I'm unsure how to move my library from my home computer to my work computer.

Help :(

The only way I'm aware of to move music to another library is to burn the iTunes music folder onto CD(s) and import from the CD from the new library. Last time I looked, Apple was threatening legal action against anybody who offered software to allow iTunes to import music from an iPod. I'd love to hear if there is another way around this since I have 1 iPod and 2 computers with iTunes.

They store both music and photos. And I believe that your song capacity is not diminished by storing photos and vice versa. :)

Kristy There are two shuffle methods on the iPod. One, which you mentioned, shuffles everything. The other just sets the iPod to shuffle which ever playlist/album/artist you select.

Go to:

Settings > Shuffle > On/Off

Sophia There's no reason to have to transfer your entire library to another computer to play it (if you're transferring for the reason I'm thinking). If you set the iTunes preferences on the second computer to Manual, (or tell it "no" when it askes if you want to update the songs on your iPod) you can play music off the iPod rather than having to move it all into the iTunes library to make it accessible.

if you want some really thorough reviews and feedback on iPod accessories check out www.ipodlounge.com (someone posted a ? specfic link earlier, this is the general site).

Hi everyone-

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I've spent all afternoon on apple's website with no luck & their tech support line is joke!

I plugged my iPod into my computer to update it with some new music. Everything seemed to be working as usual so I walked away from it as it was updating. Upon returning to it, it looks like my iPod has had a meltdown. I've got the "Do not disconnect" message still & the update is over. Better yet, neither iTunes or my computer seem to recognize the iPod anymore. I keep getting the "unknown USB device" message from my computer. I tried to restore the iPod using a download off of apple's site, but since my computer doesn't recognize it, it won't allow me to run the restore software.

Any ideas/advice? I'm going to cry if my iPod has died! :( :( :( It's only 6 months old! Thanks!

So you already tried calling their tech support? I know you get one free tech support call, and you should be within the limits since you've only had it for 6 months. When I had problems with mine, they had me delete all of the versions of itunes I had one my computer and reload itunes. Is the music still on your ipod? It won't kill it if you just unplug it (even thought it says not to disconnect). I mean, don't do it all the time, but one time is probably fine.

What OS are you using? DH had a similar problem yesterday with his iPod using Windows XP.

If you have XP, can you disconnect the iPod by right clicking the icon in the lower right hand corner of the toolbar? It should say something about "remove hardware safely" or something similar. That's how DH disconnected his from the computer because it kept saying "do not disconnect."

If you can do that, once you remove it try restarting your computer. Don't know if it will work, but it worked for us yesterday!

Goddess Tiff
09-18-2005, 03:32 PM
Yeah, that happened to me at first too. Do as Lilla said if you have XP, I had to do that with mine. It's the icon that has the little green arrow. I also had to restart itunes a couple times to recognize the iPod on my computer. Good luck!

If you were to check the apple support boards, I'm sure someone has come up with a way to do it, but generally speaking, no you can't transfer from iPod to computer.

The simplest way would be to burn you entire list onto several DVD discs (which hold up to 5 Gb) and transfer it over that way if you really need to have the music on your office computers.

You could also purchase a secondary external hard drive, copy your music folder onto it and then hook that up to your office computer.

Finally, when you plug the iPod into your office computer, set your update preferences to manual and you can play all of the contents from the iPod from your iTunes app.

Phew! :) Hope that helps.

This may get confusing. I'll try to do it in steps.
1. Plug your ipod into your home computer and right click the ipod icon in your browser on the left. Select options and then select to choose your songs that go on your ipod.
2.Download itunes onto the computer you want to load everything onto. Make sure you don't select it as your main source for your ipod. I think it will delete all your songs when you plug it in.
3. Plug your ipod into your work computer.
4. Right click on the ipod icon and double check that it is still on select your music. Then exit
5. Double click on the ipod icon in the left browser. It will open up all your songs.
6. Simply click and drag all the songs that you want into your itunes.

It sounds like a lot of steps but it is really easy and I can share music w/ my mom this way.

I'm thinking about buying my sister an iPod for christmas (she's been hinting she'd like one).

My mini is the perfect size to hold when I run (I haven't found an armband that's small enought to fit my arm), I dropped it a few times without so much as a scratch and it's bright blue and would be hard to lose. The student and teacher discount isn't really advertised that well. We went to an Apple store and they walked us through it. They say that they require proof of your employment or student status, but they weren't really militant about it. DH just had to list the address and phone number of his school and they rang it up. When you're checking out online, they have a little applet that lists the schools in your area.

As far as I know that is always available. But they do often offer student sales in August/September that are advertised, those are something different.

I then biught the Belkin transmitter but since I live in a metropolitan area I can rarely get that to work. Plus, my car stereo doesn't allow you to search for a static station - it only scans til it hits a station with a signal. Also - I do not have a cassette player in my car. I first bought an iTrip which didn't work out of the box and the employee at Apple came close to saying 'it's a piece of crap'. I then biught the Belkin transmitter but since I live in a metropolitan area I can rarely get that to work. Plus, my car stereo doesn't allow you to search for a static station - it only scans til it hits a station with a signal. Also - I do not have a cassette player in my car. I priced the Neo car kit but it's almost $500 for my car. Any other options?

In my car, I had to play around with the tuning of the stations for a while until I figured out that I had to hold down the key to change the station until the screen said "manual" and then I could find a static station. And it works on a non-static station too.

When you plug in your ipod look for the little pic of it in the browser on the left side.
If your right click it you can look at the settings. You may have it set up to where you have to eject the ipod in order for it to load the songs. If you want everything you have in itunes on your ipod everytime you can click for it to automattically update your ipod. You can also choose for it to only update the songs you select. (Good for if you don't want to keep all your music on your computer, or you have more music on your computer then your ipod will fit).
If you keep it on select songs, you can double click on the little ipod and then click and drag music from itunes folder into ipod folder. (I usually go into my recently downloaded file and drag and click from there only the new songs).

I hope that helps :)

Can I ask a dumb question? :)

DH ended up taking our iPod when I moved for work and now I have nothing to listen to. I really want to get a new iPod and a speaker system for my office so that I can listen to commercial-free music during the workday. The only drawback that I can think of is that I'll only be listening to music I already own or download from iTunes. Without the radio playing, I won't hear new music and I really don't have time to sit on iTunes and listen to samples very often. (My car antenna is broken, so I can't listen to radio during my commute.)

Is there a way to listen to new music, via iTunes or whatever, kind of like a radio station? Is that what Podcasts are? Sorry for being clueless. ;)

Lil_Mrs_0702
10-20-2005, 08:23 AM
I haven't tried the podcasts yet. I will after I move and get high speed at home.
When I looked at the list it didn't seem like there were any main stream music stations. I think they are all just ones that different people put together.

You can always just but a small radio for work for less than $20 and listen to that. I have some cheap speakers that plug into my ipod or my walkman to listen to at work so I can back and forth.

lawyergirl25

I do have a radio at work that I listen to, but I only get a few channels in - and only one that has music I actually like. I just get tired of having to wait until 10 to turn it on (to avoid the morning radio show) and it seems like they play commercials *all the time* until 3, when they start their "50-minute music blocks" for the drive home.

I guess I'm having a hard time justifying spending the money for a new iPod and speaker system if I'm still going to be listening to my radio half the time anyway. DH wants me to just do it, but I'm trying really hard to get as much in savings as I can. I'm so bad about buying things for myself anymore (besides clothes!) because I usually end up feeling guilty afterward. So stupid, I know.

Lawyergirl25 I don't think you can get radio through your Ipod, but I know you can in Itunes. There's an option on the left side (where it has music store, etc) for Itunes Radio. From there, you can choose the type of music and the particular station. I think they're commercial free, but I'm not sure. I listen to them often when I'm at home and don't remember hearing commercials, but I might be mistaken.

Grrr...I wish I could have iTunes at work. They've recently changed the policy so that we can't. I guess I could bring in my laptop, but that's considerably bulkier than an iPod.

Does that work for songs from limewire? I can't seem to get my Ipod to update unless I burn the songs onto a disk and then load back in to Itunes. I know there must be something I'm missing, but I can't figure out what! I can't figure out how to change the "remote" songs to the proper format to update the ipod. Thanks!

I actuall have Limewire and you can do this A

fter downloading songs in LimeWire go into iTunes then do the following

Click on File
Add File to Library
Then look for the song you downloaded in Limewire and it will go to the library then when you plug in the iPod it will automatically update in the iPod from iTunes. Hope that helps

This is more a question about iTunes, but I'm hoping someone can help!

I do not currently own an iPod (maybe someday!), so I use my Pocket PC for music when I work out. I have a 256Mb memory card that I copy mp3's to and then just play them using Windows Media Player.

The problem is that 256Mb limits the number of songs I can have on my card at any time. So I keep all my mp3's on my PC and then just add/delete songs from my memory card as I need them.

Does iTunes have some sort of restriction on how many times I can copy a song? I mean I might copy an mp3 today, delete it in a month, and then want to copy it back again a month after that. Would that be a problem? I can find the answers about burning CD's on their web site, but that's it.

Anyone got any ideas? I'd really like to start getting new music this way, but knowing how I use it, I don't want to have it "stuck" on my PC.

Many thanks in advance! :D

I have been using my Shuffle for about a month and for what I use it for, it's perfect. I use it at the gym, and that's about it. Mine has about 50 songs on it, but I'm always adding or deleting. I have never used any other iPod, so I can't compare, but I really like my Shuffle!

If I don't turn my ipod (mini) on every day, I have to hard-reboot it... does this happen to anyone else? It's annoying, especially because it eats up so much of the battery each time.

Hmm... I think it might be a problem for you if you don't want to keep it on your hard drive all the time. There's no limit on how many times you can move music on/off your portable player, but there are restrictions on how many computers you can transfer iTunes songs to, but I think you can burn it onto a CD unlimited times. Be aware also that the format of iTunes songs aren't compatable with all portable players.

If you leave your ipod off for more than 72 hours it will need to reboot )at least the 1st gen minis are like this). If it's less than that, there there is something wrong with your ipod and I would send it in if it's less than a year old. If it's more than a year old, I would try changing the battery myself to see if that works. If that doesn't work, then you have to send it in. An ipod only goes to sleep. It doesn't entirely turn off when you shut it down... so it's constantly draining the battery. It only shuts down entirely after 72 hours and by then you've lost 75% of your battery power anyway.

If you have shuffle turned on, then play by genre, that doesn't work?

The other option is to just make a playlist of a genre and then play that playlist with shuffle on.

I think so. I leave mine on shuffle 99% of the time anyway, and I almost exclusively use playlists, rather than sorting by genre, album, etc. But, I know that I've played by album while having the shuffle turned on and it shuffled just that album.

At the current time there is no audio attachment like for recording for the newest video iPods. Apple got rid of the port that was used for these and now all there is, is a headphone jack and USB port. I work with iPods for work and this is killing us. We are in talks with Belkin and Griffin that make these kind of devices and they are shooting to "have something for the holidays" but it's looking more like Feb. Apple is so secretive with their products but once they are out there, firms catch up and get stuff out there.

Techincally, yes. Is it pretty easy to do? Depends on which hacker software you are going to use and if the DVD has copyright protection. Not all do. Is it legal? Depends on who you ask. Im pretty sure that Apple will sign a deal with movie companies to distribute movies like they are doing with the TV shows.

DH are each buying our first iPods this year. In the older iPods you could attach an iMic to record - are you saying this is no longer available? I'm confused as to what an audio attachment is ...

cynder
11-30-2005, 07:30 AM
Hmmm... I worked with iMic and I am not quite sure how you would record with that on older iPods. There was a product called iTalk that would plug in and allow you to voice record.

http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:SbsP3OyNr1sJ:www.macaccessorycenter.c om/images/products/xlarge/griffin/italk/italk_xl.gif

See that pin to the left. The hole that it goes in is no longer on the new iPods - hence make old accessories obsolete for the new video iPod. But according to the specs there is recording capability built in - it's just that there is no plug in device. It will come in the next few months but officially not here yet.

teresa2mike yeah, I do a lot of copyright education so it's my nature to lecture. Sorry. Yep, you can view home DVDs and if you have Apple's iMovie it's really easy.

I got some money for Christmas to use to buy myself an iPod. :) I was planning to buy a Mini...but now I see that Apple has discontinued them & replaced them with the new Nano. :( DH just got a Nano for Christmas (he just opened it & started playing with it a few minutes ago). So now I'm trying to decide whether to buy a Nano for myself from the Apple Store or to buy a Mini off of eBay. There are still some Minis for sale on eBay that say they are "new" - I wouldn't want to buy a used one. I'm a little hesitant to buy such an expensive item off eBay - I usually just buy smaller items there rather than taking the risk on buying an expensive item from a private seller like that. But if the Mini is really great, then I'd take the chance & do it, probably.

So, does anyone have any input on Mini vs. Nano?

I've tried updating the software, restoring the software, rebooting the iPod deleting files I thought might be corrupt etc. etc. and nothing has worked so far. The iPod is also freezing in the middle of updating. Also, my virus software sees over 700 files on the disk but there's nothing in the menus. I'm so frustrated!!! I had a similar problem loading my photo album to my iPod and it drove me insane, too.

Two questions:
How much space is on your hard drive?
Is it less than the size of the music folder you are trying to update?

My iPod would start updating, but it would quit and there would be nothing there. What I figured out is that when the iPod updates, it puts the updated files into a "buffer." So if I was trying to upload 5 gigs, I needed at least 5 gigs of free space on my hard drive in order for it to work.

Could that be your problem, too?

Do you have a Mac or Windows computer? I've been on macs fairly exclusively for the last 3 years and I'm not sure what the latest version of Windows calls their system info folders.

Would it make a difference that I can't even put one song on the ipod?

Are you manually selecting one song to update? Because the auto-update feature (which is standard, IIRC) will try to take your entire music folder, and it's all or nothing. If it can't place all the songs into the buffer (I'm probably using the wrong word for this) it won't get to the step where it uploads any to the iPod.

jh03

I am using windows. I have it set to manually update and I drag 1 song from the library to the ipod and it doesn't work. The ipod does say do not connect for what seems like a long time and I end up ejecting it because nothing is happening. I am not sure if this is a problem with my computer or the ipod.

Secret_Squirrel
01-11-2006, 10:00 AM
Well, that doesn't sound like my problem. It could be a problem with the iPod or iTunes. I would:

1. double check compatibility (are your versions of iTunes and Windows new enough?)
2. remove the iPod software from my system and reinstall it.

If it still won't work, take it into a Mac store, or the store you bought it from and see if they can make it work or give you a new one. iPods are sensitive, you may have gotten a bum one.

Hi all - I haven't read the whole thread, but I did search a bit to see if I could figure out an answer to my question. It's so general / basic, I think it's just better to ask. :)

I'm finally getting back into running and one of my friends had an mp3 player today and I think that might be a good idea for me too. So, questions:

1) I know IPOD is a brand of mp3 player, but does it really make a difference to get an IPOD over another mp3 player? If your answer is NO, then what other mp3 player would you recommend?

2) I would want the IPOD for working out (probably nothing else). I'm not a huge music person, but I could see where it could get/keep me moving. That said, I am not looking to spend a lot of $$. I have a treo that I think could also play mp3's with the right type of media card, but I haven't figured that out yet - and I don't think it would be good for running.

ETA: 3) Does the shuffle only "shuffle" or can you choose the order you want to hear the songs in? Besides size and the screen - what are the diferences between the shuffle and the Nano?

So, that said, do you recommend getting an IPOD or a generic mp3 player?
If IPOD, Nano or Shuffle? (leaning away from regular ipod b/c I would want this for running/working out)

Thanks for any help and/or advice - much appreciated :)

Hm well, I own an ipod bc it was a gift. But zens are made by Creative so I am sure you can go to the creative website and find lots of info on them. As far as I know, the main advantage to zens over ipods (other than the price) is that they use standard MP3 format whereas the ipod converts your MP3s (assuming you haven't bought them directly from iTunes) into some weird apple format. It's a one way street when storing stuff onto your ipod (music wise I mean).

Not necessarily. You can set iTunes to rip and encode music from your CDs nto mp3 format instead of AAC format. And, iTunes hasn't reformatted any of the mp3s that I had on my hard drive and transferred to the iPod.

I like my iPod mini, but I think that their huge popularity has to do with the form factor, the marketing, and the fact that they were one of the first high-storage mp3 players available. There's nothing wonderful or magical about it because it's an iPod, other than the pricetag. Honestly, I had a Creative Zen about 5 years ago that held a whopping 128mb of data, on smart media cards, and the interface on it was, IMO superior to Apple's in a lot of ways. I hate iTunes, think it's a crappy piece of software, and a lot of my friends with iPods feel the same way. But, the iPod is too expensive to risk using a third party program and have it mess up the drive. Apple is good at being proprietary.

I got the iPod because it was cute and it was trendy. I didn't look at other mp3 players. I think a lot of people have them because they're considered the de facto standard for mp3 players - but that doesn't make them the best - just the best known.

Robyn, I think it also depends on whether you are a Windows person or a Mac person. I'm a Mac person, and my iPod integrates seamlessly with everything else in my world. I personally really like iTunes and have had no problems with it at all. In our household, we have three Mac computers and two iPods, and our set up works like a dream. We have not had any problems with our iPods, and we have both had them for a while now (me - 1-1/2 years, him - 2-1/2 years). We'd like to upgrade to video iPods, and I think the ones we have will easily live until we get to that point.

Fundamentally, I appreciate the fact that through iTunes, Apple was the first company to make it so easy for users to legally download music. They completely turned us into a downloading family, insteading of a CD-based family, and we don't steal any of our music. That is because the iTunes Music Store made it so easy from day 1. And the seamless integration between our iTunes and iDisc back up ensures that we will never lose our music should, god forbid, something happen to one of our Macs.

However, if you're a Windows person, the program may not be such a good fit for you. And I can understand why you might want to get something else. But I really think the iPod is a pleasure to own and use, especially with the Earbud Headphones (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001AP8CE/qid=1138034973/sr=8-2/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-2780052-7207217?n=507846&s=pc&v=glance).

If you are going to purchase, I would purchase from an Apple Store because people know the products better than someone at another kind of electronics store. Or buying from the Apple Store on-line is always a good option. They do a very nice job. I've made many purchases from them, and I've always been extremely pleased. :)

I got a Zen Micro for Christmas last year. It was really good for me, especially with it's compatibility with .wma files, since that's what I had most of my music on my computer as. The problems with the micro were: battery life sucked. No where near the advertised 12 hours. More like 4-5. And then there's a huge problem that Creative has been having with its headphone jacks. Mine is only spotty, like if my headphones are twisted the wrong way I get static or loss of sound. DH researched it and found out it's been an ongoing problem with Creative players. They have been okay about replacing in and out of the warranty, but the problem continues to occur on new players. Mine never got bad enough to send it in.

For Christmas, I finally broke down and got an iPod (30g w/ video). It sucked to switch everything over to be compatible, I will admit. And, I'm still getting used to the differences. The Zen Micro still works just fine, and DH uses it now. Honestly, for the year I used it, the Zen was great for me and totally worth the purchase. I didn't have as many problems as I've read about in reviews.

eta: I'm completely and totally a Windows person. I admit it. Damn the man! So, my holdout to get an iPod was all about that. I mourn the loss of all my Windows Media Player familiarity. But for me, it was finally about the superior product. So, I'm slowly getting used to it. :) And since I had already filled up the 5g Zen Micro, the extra oh, 25 gigs helps ease the pain. lol.

ITA with this. I'm not a Mac person, so I find iTunes to be really counter-intuitive. I have a friend who just got a Mac and he said that iTunes works so much better on his Mac than it did on his PC.

Personally, I've had lots of issues with iTunes crashing or hanging up on me. Sometimes, it won't let me eject the iPod - really fun when you're trying to get out the door.

I'll bet! That would be super frustrating! And I can honestly say the opposite is true for me. It is such a dream to use on a Mac.

Thanks all for the information!

So, I am a total windows person - but not a total music person. The only music on my computer now is stuff I have downloaded from i-tunes (which I am happy to continue using, I think :) )

I don't even know where else to get music (other than my CD's)

The question also remains - Ipod shuffle vs. Nano? (assuming I went that route).

Thanks!

PS - can a windows person be happy using an IPOD? I'm guessing yes - but interested in responses.

I'm a Windows person and I'm happy using my iPod. Most of the time, it's just fine. But the 5-10% that it's not perfect, it can be really frustrating, if you're not used to the Apple way of thinking and dealing with the software. It's not a huge issue; I guess I expected it to be 100% perfect since the iPod is the "standard" and there's all the hype attached.

I'd absolutely go for the Nano over the Shuffle, if you're picking iPods here. The Shuffle is so tiny, I know I'd lose it. Plus, the songs are totally random and you can't see what you're listening to, or choose a specific song. There's a lot less functionality with the shuffle. With the Nano, you can sort your music and listen by artist, by genre, by composer, by album, etc., and choose different playlists, because you have a screen to scroll through the options.

Yeah, it sounds like it to me, if you're already familiar with iTunes and like it.

And I'd agree about going with the Nano. I think people who get the Shuffle have to really know that want the low level of functionality on the unit itself. I am imagining you want more control in your hand than that. Though I will point out that the Nano it teeny tiny and that you may want to compare it to a full size iPod in a store and consider it, as well.

I lurked in this thread a little bit while I was deciding whether to get an iPod. I ended up getting an Ipod nano, and I'm really enjoying it!

RobynScott ~ I wanted something for exercising as well. The Ipod nano is really perfect for running. It's so small that I hardly notice it. I clip it to my pants, and it doesn't have the bouncing problem I've experienced with a radio that I used to have. I didn't really even consider the shuffle, because well, the nano was so darn cute. :o But I think the nano also holds more music anyway, so I would not really have considered the shuffle. I think a Windows person could be happy with an Ipod, but I'm a Mac person, so maybe I'm biased. I really resisted the Ipod for a long time, but I'm totally enjoy mine right now. :)

Btw, I see you're doing TNT, good for you! :D

ETA: The cheaper Ipod video is only $50 more than the more expensive nano, so I seriously considered the Ipod video. But I thought the Ipod video was a bit too heavy for running. Plus, DH had some technical mumbo-jumbo reasons for getting the nano over the regular Ipod.

Thanks for the advice. I'm afraid that the IPOD would skip too much from running.

So, now I've got to cough up $200 for a Nano I just decided I wanted, huh? oh boy - I may need to wait a bit ;) - but thanks for the info about the Shuffle and not being able to choose the song - that's exactly what I was wondering about.

So - it will have to be Nano or some other mp3 player - no shuffle.

Do any other mp3 players play itunes?

MY DH's new iPod Nano that he got for Christmas suddenly is frozen & won't work! He plugged it into the computer last night & it just totally froze. Now, whether we plug it in, unplug it, push buttons, etc. it does nothing. It says "Now Playing" but it's not doing anything. I thought I read somewhere that you can reset these things somehow, but we can't figure out how to do it.

Does anyone have any advice, before we take it to the Apple store to get them to fix it?

TIA!

This is how badly I am hooked on my ipod. My Ipod has about 3,000 songs on it right now and I am always listening for new music to put on it. I also steal whatever my DH downloads and puts in our computer.

The other day I was listening to it at work and actually thought to myself, "Man this is a really good song, I should download it for my ipod."

It wasn't until I looked up who sang it on my ipod that I realized that I already had it and was playing it.

^^ Exactly! My iPod has been on the fritz for a while and I finally got it quasi-working the other night. After having it with me on the train to and from work I couldn't believe how much I missed having music available all the time.

At work I listen to Sirius via their media player (I can't plug in the iPod to anything other than a wall socket to charge otherwise it gets and error and won't display any of the files. I did say it was quasi-fixed. :))

The only disappointment I've had so far is that the earbuds that came with it will not stay in my ears! Another IPOD/mp3 question for you all (sorry, I can't add to the speaker discussion) - do you miss having a radio?

I think the NANO looks awesome (though I kind of feel like I would be paying for the brand) - but there are other mp3 players out there that also have an FM option. I'm wondering if I would miss having the radio option while working out. My music 'collection' so to speak is not that extensive, so I like hearing new songs on the radio to turn me onto songs. Also, I take the train to work, so no hearing songs on the radio (not to mention, we seem to have lost stations around here that play 'new' music - but that's for another post :) )

Also, is itunes (and your own cd's) the only option for downloading songs? I was reading somewhere else that there may be a less expensive option than $0.99/song (I anticipate that due to my limited collection, I will need to do a lot of downloading :) )

Thanks for any and all help - I really appreciate it! I am so thinking of running out and getting the NANO, but the practical side of me is trying to figure out if it makes the most sense (esp. at twice the price of other players) (of course, the non-practical side just thinks its cool ;)

Thanks!

Robyn :)

re:radio

Nope, don't miss it at all, but I didn't listen to it much to begin with as I'm not a fan of most pop music. We (me and DH) have Sirius radio now which we both listen to online while we're at work. If you use iTunes (no matter what player you purchase) it has streaming radio stations so you can still here new music when you want to.

My CD collection is not huge either and I still never run out of stuff to listen to on the iPod. I also use Pandora (www.pandora.com) to find additional artists in the genres I like. If I hear a song in a movie/tv show, I write it down and look it up later for the full album.

iTunes is not the only option for downloading. Yahoo has a service, there's also Rhapsody.com, MP3.com, napster.com and various others.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Just found this thread, haven't had time to read thru it all yet, but I'm excited to learn about our iPods:) We got 2 Shuffles for Christmas, but DH and I are contemplating trading them in to get a nano or put in $100 of our own $$ and get the 30gb iPod--what do you guys think? We think we really only need one, truthfully I'd probably be the only one to use it when I'm out on walks and stuff. Any recommendations? We tried to exchange the shuffles once already, but WalMart and Target were both out of the nanos!

Add me to the Ipod family ;) FH just got me a 60 GB Video Ipod for my birthday yesterday. I had never seen an Ipod in person until I opened mine. I immediately installed the CD and downloaded Itunes. I am in love :D We transfered all of our music on the computer to it (we have something like 1000 songs) and it took a lot less time than I thought it would. And I've only used up like 3 GB's. Today I figured out how to put pictures on it, to show people at work. I'm totally a PC person (never even used a MAC computer before) but I don't find Itunes to be hard to use at all. (And believe me, I'm totally computer illiterate)

One question though, is the Itunes music store the only way to download tv shows to an Ipod? I was looking through their selections and I wasn't impressed. None of the shows I like are on there. Are tv shows fairly new? Do you think they'll be adding more shows? Or is there somewhere else I can find them?

The extra connection is for power (the iTrip runs off the iPod's power vs. an external source).

1. I have an ipod mini right now that I am giving to my DH to use in his truck. I have decided to get a new 30G for myself because I really dont like the nano or the shuffle. Is it to my advantage to buy it directly from apple or should I just go to Best Buy?

1. I don't think it really matters, the price will be the same no matter where you purchase the iPod. Best Buy will be instant gratification unless you have an Apple store nearby.

2. I hate when they try to upsell with the contracts. We've never taken them up on the offer for any electronics we've purchased at Best Buy. If you really feel you need extra coverage, you could always purchase the Apple Care protection plan through Apple for $60 and it will be specific to your iPod.

I think so, definitely. The great thing about the Apple Care Plan is that you can call them for help after that year warranty is up if you just have a question and need assistance or advice. I don't know all the terms of the Best Buy warranty, but no store warranty (in my experience) gives you that. Also, you can purchase the Apple Care Plan at the end of your warranty, so you don't have to decide when you buy. Of course, the unfortunate reality is that this technology is changing all the time and isn't meant to last a really long time, so in three years there is a chance you'll find your iPod failing and/or want to buy a new one.

They are both registered to me and I have had no problems with itunes. The only thing is-I don't have my itunes set to sync or automatically update-I have it set to manual. This provents any problems with things automatically disappearing or appearing on either ipod when I do hook it up to the computer-and I do on occassion. I was going to set him up on our desktop and i just use our laptop but he isn't as ipod techy so he leaves it up to me to do things and I just use the laptop. Is there a way to use an IPOD in your car without an FM transmitter? Does anyone know if there is some kind of kit that connects the IPOD directly to your car stereo speakers?

Also, I've heard of an "IPOD ready" stereo. does anyone know anything about that?

My DH already has an iTunes account & an iPod Nano of his own, so I'm wondering how it is going to work for me to set up my new iPod on our computer at home. Can/should I set up a separate iTunes account for myself, or can we share one account for both iPods? I don't think that will work, but my DH thinks it will.

lilydawg - if you have a tape deck in your car you can get an adapter like you would for a cd player and then play it through your car stereo-that is what i do.

Sazoo-I have an ipod and my husband has my old one. i usually just use itunes account to buy anything and put it on either (or both) ipods. Both ipods are registered to me (I dont know if that makes a difference but his was my old one so I didn't see the point in changing the "ownership".) the biggest thing I can say though to make sure you sync your own music is to set itunes to transfer songs manually on both ipods-this just means you have to drag and drop the music instead of "syncing" it. Its not hard at all. good luck!

DH wants a new iPod. His 20G 4th generation iPod is full. He hates the video ones because he only wants room to store songs, and the video and photo stuff wastes a ton of space.

Does anyone know if they plan to bring back the larger sized music-only iPods?

Lilydawg -Is there a way to use an IPOD in your car without an FM transmitter? Does anyone know if there is some kind of kit that connects the IPOD directly to your car stereo speakers?

Yes, you can hard-wire it to your car stereo. My brother did this himself. I think that he purchased a kit somewhere online. He said it was fairly inexpensive & easy.

Probably not. But he can get a 60G for $399. That's a lot of songs.

The thing with the photo ipod is that it IS primarily a music player. When you do add on photos to it, they tell you that it always adds all your music first and if there is room left over it lets you put on photos so I don't know that it really is wasting that much space-but I could be wrong!

But from the way they describe the tech specs, I believe room is set aside on to the video iPods for videos and photos, in contrast to the non-video models, which had space for items like addresses and calendars that did not affect your music storage space.

I haven't heard of any plans to come out with bigger non-video iPods.

According to CNN, the 60 gig iPod video is "at risk" of being phased out in favor of a new design with a full-face video screen and virtual click wheel.

If you want a big memory iPod, better act quick, maybe?

http://money.cnn.com/2006/03/21/technology/apple_ipod/index.htm?cnn=yes

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Apple may be phasing out its 60-gigabyte Video iPod, according to one analyst who tracks the company.

The company has told its distributors that the 60-gigabyte iPod, which launched in October and retails for $399, is "at risk" until the end of April, meaning that it could be discontinued or replaced, according to Shaw Wu, an analyst for American Technology Research...

In a note to clients, Wu said he believes the company is readying a wide-screen video iPod with Bluetooth headphones that could be ready as early as the June quarter. The analyst said his checks indicate that Apple is working on such a product.

I recently bought an iPod Nano. The ear bud style headphones that came with it are too big for my ears, so they are uncomfortable & fall out easily. I’ve only had the iPod for 2 days & the headphones are already driving me nuts.

I don’t want to spend a lot of money buying fancy headphones, but I definitely need to get something else that has smaller ear buds (I’d rather stick with this ear bud style rather than get headphones that have a headband attached). I’m thinking of ordering these from the Apple website for $39.00:
Apple iPod In-Ear Headphones
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/lm_altview_m9394ga.jpg
They say they come with “three different sized caps to ensure the headphones fit comfortably and securely in your ear.” so hopefully they’ll fit.

Does anyone have these? Or are there other headphones that you would recommend?

TIA!

I haven't heard good things about the Apple earbuds.

I have the Sony Fontopia earbuds, which came highly recommended by the iPod Lounge and users at Audiocubes.com

(I have the MX81 version, but they don't seem to be selling them anymore.)

Interesting news:

Apple Releases Software to Set iPod Volume (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/apple_volume_setting;_ylt=AqiM2fxpl.UCQmMdTD_1L0ys 0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA2Z2szazkxBHNlYwN0bQ--)
AP
CUPERTINO, Calif. - Owners of recent iPods will now be able to set how loud their digital music players can go. Apple Computer Inc., facing complaints and a lawsuit claiming the popular player can cause hearing loss, made the setting available as part of a new software update Wednesday. The free download applies to the iPod Nano and the iPod models with video-playback capabilities.

Parents also can use the feature to set a limit on their child's iPod and lock it with a code, the company added.

"As the leading provider of digital music players, Apple continuously brings iPod customers innovative and easy to use solutions," Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president for iPod marketing, said in a statement. "With the increased attention in this area, we want to offer customers an easy to use option to set their own personal volume limit."

Earlier this year, a Louisiana man filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the iPod can cause hearing loss in people who use it.

I have the same problem- the regular iPod headphones are way too big for my ears. I have the in-ear buds that you posted, and using the smallest of the three "cap" sizes, they fit fine. I find that when I'm moving around a lot (walking or running) they tend to jostle out of my ears a bit, but if you're just using them at your desk or something, it shouldn't be a problem. Also as an FYI, they do protrude from your ears differently than the regular buds because of the way that they sit in your ears. Hard to visualize, but if you think about the regular buds kind of laying flat against your ear, the in-ear ones sort of go sideways- so the ends and the wires stick out a bit from your ears on either side. Just wanted to toss that in there, in case it might make a difference to you.

ETA: I'm still kind of looking for a new pair of headphones, preferably not in white because I feel like it makes me somewhat of a target on the train at night, and because I hate how the earphones fall out occasionally when I'm walking. So I'll be checking out the other recs here!

I have a question and it seems no one can give me a straight answer thus far.

I dl peer-to-peer music. I know it's wrong, illegal and all but I still do it. I've been highly considering stopping that and just going to the itunes store and buying my music. My question is, because it's all done electronically/online would istore be able to "see" my peer-to-peer downloads and thus, get me into some kind of trouble? Does this question even make sense?

I'm wanting to buy and ipod. I will most likely get it off e-bay. I know nothing about them at all. Could you give me some pointers on what to look for?

I'm just looking for one to play music. I don't need the video. Also it doesn't have to hold a TON of songs. I mostly want to use it when I run.

I don't like the littlest one. I think it's called a nano?! I want one bigger than that.

Any info would be great! TIA!

You may want to read through this and maybe post your question there:

http://www.constantchatter.com/showthread.php?t=450

If you are using your iPod to run, I would suggest against the 30Mb or 60Mb iPod. That has a hard drive in it, and the bouncing from running will effect the music playing. It's also the model with video.

The next smallest size is the nano. No video; just music. It's got a flash card for memory, so it will not skip when you run.

The smallest is the shuffle. Very small amount of memory compared to the others and you can only put your playlist on shuffle rather than order the songs (I think...)

HTH!

Funny that this came up. My Ishuffle went through the washer and dryer this weekend =0( and I've been looking on ebay for a new one. I know there is another thread, but I just wanted to let you know that you can play songs in order on the shuffle, they don't have to be in random order, but it's an option. I love it because it's so small. I miss it since I killed it in the wash on Sunday. =0( You can probably fit about 8-10 cds worth of songs. It is so amazingly light, too.

ETA: The one I had was 512 MB, but you can get one that has more space.

I'm completely lost :(

I just bought the 500 capacity nano today. It is to replace my discman that fell out of the car this weekend and is damaged (man, what technological age am I in!). I was thinking about the shuffle, but I haven't heard lots of positive things about it... the reviews are better for the nano. Anywho, I am strictly a radio person in the car. The only use of this is possible walking between classes, and working out.

I have no idea how iTunes works. My question is this--can I store more songs on iTunes/my computer than my iPod holds? i.e. can I "own/buy" 700 songs, even though my iPod holds fewer? Can I transfer songs between my iPod and computer freely? I really didn't want to spend the $240 (2 year accident coverage included), and would be happy with the 1GB if I can freely transfer songs on and off of the iPod. I really don't need to hold 500 songs at once on it...

Thanks!

I’m somewhat of an iPod/iTunes rookie myself, but I can answer your basic questions with a YES, you can definitely have more songs on iTunes than you have on your iPod, & you can freely transfer any songs you like onto the iPod from your iTunes “library” of songs. :) All you have to do is select the option to manually transfer songs to your iPod, rather than letting iTunes auto-sync with your iPod every time you plug it in. ;) When I first hooked up my new iPod Nano to my computer (iTunes was already installed) it recognized the new iPod & asked me some setup questions, including whether I wanted auto-sync turned on or off.

You can also delete songs from your iPod at any time…& then put them back later if you want to. The key is to not delete songs from your iTunes library, so that they remain available to you in the future. For example, I uploaded my Christmas CDs to my iTunes account, but I didn’t put those songs on my iPod yet because I don’t want to hear the Christmas songs when I choose “shuffle” play. When it gets closer to Christmas time, I’ll transfer those songs over to the iPod for a month or so, though. ;)

Good luck!

I don't like the littlest one. I think it's called a nano?! I want one bigger than that. The littlest one is the Shuffle. I've heard mixed reviews about it, even the man at Best Buy said that I probably wouldn't be happy with it. Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002ZAIM8/sr=8-2/qid=1144199177/ref=pd_bbs_2/102-2408824-4210531?%5Fencoding=UTF8)'s review of the Shuffle really sealed the deal for me against the shuffle (the first review by Ronald M. Cronovich "Ron").

The next cheapest one is the Nano 1GB. That's the one I just exchanged the 2GB Nano for earlier tonite :) It holds 240 songs, and it has the screen to it so you can leaf through the playlist.

Does the nano come in different colors?
The iPod that came in different colors was the Mini (it came in 3 colors, I think), which was replaced last year by the new Nano (which comes in black & white, as lawyerlee said). ;)

If you don't want the Shuffle, the next step up is the Nano (the regular iPod is the one that has video.)

The iPod Nano comes in 1GB (retail $149), 2GB (retail $199) & 4GB (retail $249). You can buy iPods on Apple's website, www.apple.com, & get free shipping.

I considered buying my iPod Nano on eBay briefly, but after checking out the options I decided I wasn't going to save much off the retail prices by doing it that way, so I opted to order from Apple directly for peace of mind that I was getting what I ordered - a brand new, mint condition iPod. ;)

Good luck!

But now I can't decide between the nano and then the bigger ipod. I like the size of the nano. But for just $50 more I can get 7x the song capacity and video.

Do you guys have any suggestions or ideas?

Personally I would go for the bigger memory. I have a 4GB mini and it's more than half full. I don't even have that much on it IMO. Maybe 20 CDs and 2 audiobooks I got for free.

I have heard a few people complain that the nano is *too* small. Mostly these are guys though and they have trouble using the pad bc they have bigger fingers. I have also heard that it scratches easily (there is a class action suit for that I think) and that it is slippery.

That is a good point, but if the user is using it for running (like the OP of the question stated), the bigger memory iPod is NOT a good idea because it's got a hard drive and your songs will skip. Before I bought my nano I asked a bunch of people who ran with iPods what they thought, and they all agreed they should've bought a nano instead. It's got a flash drive, so no skipping.

I have put my entire 200+ CD collection, a bunch of downloads, and other stuff into iTunes on my PC and then just change up my nono's 4Mb every so often. Slightly a pain, but at least everything works when I exercise. FWIW, audiobooks by default take up a TON of space if you just use the default compressions to copy from CD. I think I got 50-60 CD's on my 4Gb before I needed to start swapping out songs.

And if anyone HAS had a good experience running with iPods, I'd love to hear it. DH is in the market for his own these days...
