For the last few weeks, DD has been getting a progressively bad diaper rash. Basically everywhere her diaper touches is bright red with little dots. I've used the same diaper and wipes brands since she was born. I even opened new packages in case there was some contamination, but nothing helped. I've tried every diaper rash cream on the market and even a prescription anti fungal in case it was yeast. The doctor suggested changing diaper brands, as we had tried everything else.
Finally it dawned on me that it got worse when ever she pooped, understandable right? But that got me thinking about what she's been eating. The only new food is yogurt, which she started eating around Christmas. This week I stopped feeding her yogurt and miraculously the rash is getting better.
Anyone ever experienced this? She drinks a milk based formula and has never shown any reactions to dairy when I was breastfeeding. I thought dairy wouldn't be an issue for her. Her poop is completely normal with no signs of blood or anything else. What's going on?

DS has some yogurt issues. If he has milk and yogurt in the same setting he gets this horrible rash that we've termed 'fire butt' because that's what it looks like. It's really red, and wiping with anything - soft cloth, wipe, TP, putting him in the bath - causes screaming and crying as if I was beating him. He also has the same reaction to tomatoes. We stopped doing the two dairy products together and it hasn't caused an issue.

The milk proteins in yogurt are slightly different than the ones in formula, which are usually broken down to a point in an attempt to make them easier for babies to digest. Cow's milk protein is one of the hardest things to digest, and some kids have trouble with it till after a year. Backing off on the yogurt (and maybe other straight dairy products) till she's a little older is a fine solution.

But why would it cause a rash where her diaper touches and not a rash everywhere else? She's not getting any other dairy products and I wasn't going to give her any others until she's a year, so that's not a problem. I'm bummed about the yogurt. She's really hard to feed and yogurt was one of the few foods that she actually gobbled up. Almost every other food is 3 or 4 or more attempts to get one tiny baby spoon's worth into her. Yogurt is only two attempts.

Food allergies often show up as diaper rash, especially around the bottom and specifically the anus, because the allergens can pass through into the waste undigested and stay in contact with the skin (even if it's just a few minutes before you change her).
It looks like she's only 9 months, like my DS2. He still eats very little in the way of solids compared to many babies -- maybe one meal a day, a few tablespoons of applesauce or carrots or whatever.
My first son was even less into solids at this age, didn't really take to purees at all and went right to table foods at a year. We of course knew that they had some food sensitivities, so I never pushed it, and I can tell you that at least for my older son all sensitivities were outgrown and he was eating things like yogurt by about 14-15m. I always felt like maybe he was a reluctant eater by instinct, because once he stopped needing a restricted diet he ate like a champ. It could be that your DD is the same way -- just "knows" she's not ready for a lot of food -- and she'll outgrow it when she's ready -- or maybe once she starts self-feeding like my DS1.
LOL, anyway, there's my life story. :)

what anti-fungal script cream did you get? I know my son they used Nystatin in the hospital and he cleared right up. His ped (we no longer see now) a year later, instead of giving me a script for the Nystatin which I knew worked well, gave me a script for Oxistat (cost me something like $55 on insurance even) and the stuff did nothing for him. His and the twins new ped, when one of the girls had a similar rash and I said all diaper creams were not working, gave me a script for the Nystatin (less than $4 for the tube) when I said it worked previously for a rash that other creams didn't for my son. I used the Nystatin and within a day she was clear. She even said mom's know best sometimes, when nothing else works and had something else work for another of their kids. We haven't had an issue since with rashes.
