Along the same lines as the Feel Good song…

What’s your Broken Heart Song that makes you cry?

During my last (ever) broken heart, I made a 3-CD set called Wallow In It, which has since been passed around a lot. What would you want to hear?

Hmmm.. Thinking hard, but I don't think I've ever had a breakup song. There are songs that remind me about ex-BFs, but none that I listen to in order to make it all worse! lol

I love wallowing in it too. I can't remember what song I was listening to but I joked to FH that we should break up so I can really feel the song. He didn't think that was funny, lol :p

ohhh...I used to love a good wallow...

Some of my old standbys have been mentioned (I Cant Make You Love Me and One, in paticular). I also like U2's Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses.

I think my favorite wallow song is Pearl Jam's Black (can you tell I went to college in the early nineties...in Seattle?!?!?!). You can't go wrong with a lyric like "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be the sun in somebody else's sky. But why can't it be mine??"

I used to love to wallow in break-up songs, too. Some of mine:

Expose's - I'll Never Get Over You

As long as the stars shine down
From the heavens
Long as the rivers run
To the sea
I'll never get over you
Getting over me

Don't Speak - No Doubt

Dixie Chicks - You Were Mine

Sometimes I Wake Up Crying At Night
And Sometimes I Scream Out Your Name
What Right Does She Have To Take You Away
When For So Long, You Were Mine

Oh - and in Junior High, I used to love to wallow in Tiffany's Could've Been :o

"Tear In Your Hand" Tori Amos

All the world just stopped now
So you say you don’t wanna stay together any more
Let me take a deep breath babe
If you need me, me and neil’ll be hangin’ out with the dream king

Neil says hi by the way
I don’t believe you’re leaving cause
Me and charles manson like the same ice cream
I think it’s that girl
And I think there’re pieces of me you’ve never seen
Maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen well

All the world is
All I am
The black of the the blackest ocean
And that tear in your hand
All the world is danglin’ danglin’ danglin’ for me darlin
You don’t know the power that you have with that
Tear in your hand
That tear in your hand

"This Woman's Work"--Maxwell or Kate Bush:

I should be crying
But I just can't let it show
I should be hoping
But I can't stop thinking
All the things we should've said
That I never said
All the things we should've done
That we never did
All the things we should've given
But I didn't
Oh darling make it go
Make it go away
Give me these moments back
Give them back to me
Give that little kiss
Give me your hand

Some mentioned really do it for me as well, especially Black by Pearl Jam, and Bonni Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me---heartbreaking! :(

Someof my favorites have already been mentioned, most notably Black (the lyrics that were posted were my favorite spear through the heart in high school) and I can't make you love me (the song that got me through my first break up...at 15 :)).

But how can no one have mentioned Somebody- Depeche Mode? I LOOOOOOOOVED that song.

A few others:
What a Good Boy- Bare Nakeds
Pictures of You- The Cure
Freshmen- Verve Pipe
Without You- Dixie Chicks
I Will Remember you- Sarah MacLachlan
A long December- Counting Crows
Foolish Games- Jewel

I can't think of any more right now. I wish I knew where the cd I made went, damnit! It was good! I actually had to make copies of my broken hearted cd for girlfriends who kept stealing it.

"Radio" by The Corrs

It's late at night, and I'm feeling down
There are couples standing on the street
Sharing summer kisses and silly sounds

So I step inside, pour a glass of wine
With a full glass and an empty heart
I search for something to occupy my mind

But you are in my head, swimming forever in my head
Tangled in my dreams, swimming forever

So, I listen to the radio (listen to the radio)
And all the songs we used to know (listen to the ...)
So I listen to the radio (listen to the radio)
Remember where we used to go

Now it's morning light and it's cold outside
Caught up in a distant dream
I turn and think that you are by my side

So I leave my bed and I try to dress
Wondering why my mind plays tricks
And fools me into thinking you are there (you are there)

But you're just in my head
Swimming forever in my head
Not lying in my bed
Just swimming forever

So I listen to the radio (listen to the radio)
And all the songs we used to know (listen to the ...)
So I listen to the radio (listen to the radio)
Remember where we used to go
I listen to the radio (listen to the radio)
All the songs we used to know (listen to the ...)
I listen to the radio (listen to the radio)
Remember how we used to go

You are in my head, swimming forever in my head
Tangled in my dreams, swimming forever (swimming forever)
Swimming forever

and also I'll forget You by LInda Eder

Every evening shivers with the chance that you are near
and every evening whispers he is here
each moment is a fight
not to rush into your light
not to move closer but to make you disappear
I'll forget you
I've got to find a way to pull away from your glow
I'll forget you please help me find a way to let you go
I do not want you, but still you steal each breath I'm breathin from me
with just a touch you overcome me
and I let you
I will forget you, when I die
I will forget you

I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You
By Colin Hay

I drink good coffee every morning
Comes from a place that's far away
And when I'm done I feel like talking
Without you here there is less to say
I don't want you thinking I'm unhappy
What is closer to the truth
That if I lived till I was 102
I just don't think I'll ever get over you
I'm no longer moved to drink strong whisky
'Cause I shook the hand of time and I knew
That if I lived till I could no longer climb my stairs
I just don't think I'll ever get over you
Your face it dances and it haunts me
Your laughter's still ringing in my ears
I still find pieces of your presence here
Even after all these years
But I don't want you thinking I don't get asked to dinner
'Cause I'm here to say that I sometimes do
Even though I may soon feel the touch of love
I just don't think I'll ever get over you
If I lived till I was 102
I just don't think I'll ever get over you

This song is so beautiful it makes my heart ache, and I'm not even (currently at least) heartbroken.

My 'broken-hearted" songs tend to be those I listened to at the time of a break-up or painful period. So, there's a lot of Cure on my list--1988 was a rough year. ;)

And I really don't dig "new" country, but damn it if that Tim McGraw song doesn't send me over the edge every time.

He said I was in my early 40's,
With a lot of life before me,
And a moment came that stopped me on a dime.
I spent most of the next days, lookin' at the x-rays,
Talkin' 'bout the options and talkin' 'bout sweet time.
Asked him when it sank in, that this might really be the real end.
How's it hit ya, when you get that kind of news.
Man what ya do.
And he says,

[Chorus]

I went sky divin',
I went rocky mountain climbin',
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull name Fumanchu.
And I loved deeper,
And I spoke sweeter,
And I gave forgiveness I've been denying,
And he said someday I hope you get the chance,
To live like you were dyin'.

It KILLS me.

During my divorce, two songs always got to me:

Dido, White Flag

But it was Landslide currently being done by the Dixie Chicks that killed me. I couldn't listen to the song without turning into a blubbering, sobby mess. I had to censor that song from my ears and turned off the radio whenever it came on.

It fit too perfectly with what I was going through: giving up on love. And I thought it was the saddest thing in the world.

I took my love and I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail thru the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life

Well, I've been afraid of changing 'cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I'm getting older too
Well...

Well, I've been afraid of changing 'cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I'm getting older, too
Well I'm getting older too

So, take this love and take it down
Year and if you climb a mountain and ya turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well maybe
Well maybe
Well maybe the landslide will bring you down

The Rose, by Bette Midler, always gets to me, partly because it gives me hope.
Then there is the ultimate angry broken heart song, "You Oughta Know," by Alanis Morisette. That one got me past the tears and into anger once, when I really needed it.

My favorite is "Black" by Pearl Jam. It's a great song when you're brokenhearted and feeling sorry for yourself.

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything?
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything?
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all that I'll be...yeah...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

I have a CD like that. There are a lot of songs. Some have already been mentioned, but some haven't. Let's see there's a lot of country (imagine that being sad!):

I was Meant For You- Jewel
Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough- Don Henley and Patty Smyth (brings back high school memories)
If You See Him/ See Her- Reba Mcentire and Brooks&Dunn
A Bad Goodbye- Wynonna and Clint Black
When the Thought of You Catches Up with Me- David Ball
The Heart of the Matter-Don Henly
Wasted Time-The Eagles (one of my favorites)
Let Me Let Go- Faith Hill
I Can't Go THere- Kenny Chesney
Not The One- Collective Sould
Call and Answer- Bare Naked Ladies

In the past few years, I LOVED Bulletproof - Blue Rodeo

And my all time favorite:
He Stopped Loving Her Today- George Jones

He said "I'll love you till I die",
she told him "You'll forget in time"
As the years went slowly by,
she still preyed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall,
went half-crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all,
hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
dated nineteen sixty-two
He had underlined in red
every single "I love you"

I went to see him just today,
oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away, first time
I'd seen him smile in years

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

(Spoken)
You know,
she came to see him one last time.
Aww, 'n' we all wondered if she would.
And it kept runnin' through my mind
"this time he's over her for good."

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

A lot of songs on my list are not necessarily broken hearted songs (because of content and what not), but they still make me very emotional.

I ditto the following songs, first of all:
Black by Pearl Jam
One by U2
The Dance by Garth Brooks
I'll Never Get Over You by Expose
My December by Linkin Park
My Immortal by Evanescence
I Will Remember You by Sarah MacLachlan
Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough by Don Henley and Patty Smyth

And now my others:
Angel by Sarah MacLachlan
Fix You by Coldplay
With or Without You by U2
Nobody Knows by The Tony Rich Project
And So It Goes by Billy Joel
Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi

Gotta agree with stevesbabygirl on My Immortal and My December. I also love:

Chris Cagle - Miss Me Baby
Faith Hill - Like We Never Loved At All
Train - Lincoln Avenue
Train - I'm About To Come Alive
Backstreet Boys - Incomplete
Shania Twain - Don't
Trapt - Stories
Faith Hill - Back To You

Have you heard the new Gary Allan song, "Best I Ever Had"? OMG it makes me want to cry every time I hear it. The way he sings, you can just FEEL every word.

So you sailed away into a grey sky morning
Now I'm here to stay, love can be so boring
And nothing's quite the same now
I just say your name now

But it's not so bad
You're only the best I ever had
You don't want me back
You're just the best I ever had

And "Cry" by Faith Hill really gets to me. Reminds me of someone I knew:

If I had just one tear running down your cheek
Maybe I could cope, maybe I'd get some sleep
If I had just one moment at your expense
Maybe all my misery would be well spent, yeah

Could you cry a little
Lie just a little
Pretend that you're feeling a little more pain
I gave now I'm wanting something in return
So cry just a little for me

My husband and I just recently seperated. One of our favorite bands is Leatherface. I was playing an album of theirs the other day and remembered this song:

Not A Day Goes By
A time when everything was evergreen evergreen and seemingly ideal
Nights turning into the days and we didn't notice the change
No I didn't think you were wrong and I can still sing your favorite song
It's not as simple as forgetting presents that were bought
And not a day goes by when I don't spare you a thought
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes not a day goes by
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes not a day goes by
At a time when everything was evergreen and seemingly ideal
And though the nights turning into the days and we didn't notice the change
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes not a day goes by
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes not a day goes by
Not a damn day
No I didn't think you were wrong and I can still sing your favorite song
It's not as simple as forgetting presents were bought
And not a day goes by I don't spare you a thought
Not a day not a day goes by not a day not a day
Not a day not a day goes by
A time when everything was evergreen evergreen and seemingly ideal
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes not a day goes by
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes by not a day goes by
Not a day not a day goes by not a day goes

Needless to say, it has caused a tear or two (million)...:(

Im not a huge country music song, but this one really just makes me stop and think. I love my DH more than anything else in the world, but sometime you think about how things could have been different.

"What might have been" by Little Texas

Sure i think about you now and then
But it's been a long, long time.
I've got a good life now, i've moved on
So when you cross my mind....

Chorus:
(i, so, and) try not to think about
What might have been
'cause that was then
And we've taken different roads
We can't go back again, there's no use giving in
And there's no way to know
What might have been.
We could sit and talk about this all night long,

And wonder why we didn't last
Yes, they might be the best days we will ever know
But we'll have to leave them in the past.

Chorus

That same old look in your eyes
It's a beautiful night
I'm so tempted to stay
But too much time has gone by
We should just say goodbye
And turn and walk away.

Chorus

No, we'll never know
What might have been

My friends and I used to call this - the world's saddest love song:

Ain’t Life A Brook
by Ferron

I watch you reading a book
I get to thinking our
Love's a polished stone
You give me a long drawn look
I know pretty soon
You're gonna leave our home
And of course I mind
Especially when I'm
Thinking from my heart
But life don't clickety-clack
Down a straight-line track
It comes together and it comes apart
You say you hope I'm not the kind
To make you feel obliged
To go ticking through your time
With a pained look in your eyes
You give me the furniture
Well divide the photographs
Go out to dinner one more time
Have ourselves a bottle of wine
And a couple of laughs

When first you left I stayed so sad
I wouldn't sleep
I know love's a gift
I thought yours was mine
And something
That I could keep
Now I realize
Time is not the only compromise
A bird in the hand
Could be an all-night stand
Between a blazing fire
And a pocket of skies
