Anyone have a recipe for homemade tortillas? I have tried to make them from a recipe on the internet and they turned out awful. They tasted right, but they were more like pancake sized english muffins than tortillas. :o

Here's the "recipe" my family uses-
1 c. white flour
pinch salt
"some" baking powder (not too much)
"wad" of shortening

yields about 5-6.

It's really better to use rendered lard instead of shortening. I've made them with veggie oil before too and they didn't keep long but they were alright.

Experiment- those are my only words of advice.

I've never made flour tortillas before, but if you like corn ones... Do you have a Mexican supermarket near you? You can usually buy fresh masa there and then all you have to do is press into circles and fry on a hot griddle. If not you can buy dry masa and just follow the directions on the box. ;)

My husband was recently craving some fresh tortillas. In my local grocery store (Henry's), I found packaged, uncooked tortillas. When refrigerated they last a couple of weeks, and are all flattened out and everything. They taste pretty good, and take about 30 seconds each to prepare. Maybe you can look for something similar if you're not in the mood to shape fresh tortillas by hand. :)

Thank you all for your responses! I guess I'll have to experiment. I'm thinking that maybe I didn't roll them out thin enough when I tried it.

My aunt makes tortillas similar to the recipe that Aletheia posted, but I am unsure of the measurements. She uses oil instead of shortening though. I don't think I've ever had any with shortening, so if they're better that way I'll have to try it.

I don't think I've ever had fresh corn tortillas either. I'll have to try those out sometime.

I'll keep a look out for the uncooked tortillas. I've never seen those before, but they sound much easier!

Thanks again! :)

You can find tortilla mix on the baking aisle at most grocery stores. You just add a little water to the mix, let them rise, roll them out, and cook. They turn out wonderfully and are really easy to make.
