I have really decreased the amount of stuff in there since now I am more comfortable having less --DS is 7.5 mos
3 diapers
wipes
burp cloth
I BF exclusively but have 1 svg of formula in case of emergency, and an empty bottle (its been in there for months and havent used it yet--the juice with some water usually tides him over till I can get to a place to BF him)
a small bottle of juice (little gerber 4 oz one)
small tupperware with cheerios/puffs
an extra outfit (romper since its summer) amd socks
thermometer
tylenol/motrin
a toy or two
ziploc bags for dirty dipes, clothes, etc...
an extra bib
miniature bottle of sunblock
a baseball cap
my personal stuff--wallet, keys, phone, etc..in a smaller purse inside that I can just take out when I dont need the whole bag
Wow I really still have a lot looking at that list! LOL! I stopped carrying a blanket (keep one in the car),diaper creme, brush, tons of extra clothes (he doesnt leak now like he did when he was tiny). I guess when the fall comes I will have more because of adding a sweater or whatever.
Things I use most from the bag--BURP CLOTH, diapers, hat---all the other stuff I only use once in a while
my dd is almost 15 mos. now so I just have a couple diapers, wipes, changing pad, a couple toysbooks, and snacks...oh, and my wallet and cell phone.
when she was a newborn I basically had the same but prob more diapers, some ointment (aquaphor) for diaper rash, if needed, burp bloths, a couple extra outfits for the poo blowouts and bags for the poopy diapers. I think that's it. HTH!

DS is just over 2 weeks old. Here's what we have in our "mini" diaper bag:
* 3 diapers
* wipes
* extra outfit (usually a onesie)
* a receiving blanket
* burp cloth
* extra pacifier
* changing pad
* 2 bottles
* formula container w/ appropriate amounts
* bib
* socks
* hat
* extra ziploc for messy outfits
Judging from gelfnrach's list, I may need to add a few things though.

DS will be a year old next week. Now we carry a few diapers, wipes, his bottle and extra formula, tylenol (he's teething) and anbesol and a few small toys/books.
When DS was a newborn we had diapers, wipes, bottles, a receiving blanket, an extra outfit, mittens and hat, Mylicon for gas, changing pad, some pads for me when I still had PP bleeding and also some breast pads for when I was nursing.

My DS is 21 months old, so we don't carry as much as we used to, but we always have...
*3 diapers
*baby wipes
*1 bib
*Extra clothes (onsie, shorts, shirt- in case of an accident)
*snacks (animal crackers or cherrios)
*sippy cup w/juice
*changing pad
Extra stuff we brought when he was younger...
*formula (and a water bottle to mix it with)
*bottles
*Balmex
*extra bibs
*babyfood (gerber)
*blanket
*mittens
*hat/beanie
*socks
*breastpump (in a seperate bag)
We seem understocked in comparison, but I haven't yet wanted something I didn't have. DD will be four months old next weekend:
diapers/wipes/vinyl changing pad
snap-in dirties pouch came with the bag
burp cloth (DD's BF'd, so that's it for feeding supples)
clothing change for DD
folded-up sling
binky
In/on the carseat:
linkadoos toys
blanket
In an inner zippered pocket I'll toss my cell phone, debit card, and driver's license so I don't have to carry a purse.

Mine are almost 3.5 (no more diapers) and almost 2, and I never carried much more than changing pad, a couple diapers, wipes and drinks/snacks. Even when they were newborns.

I had a huge diaper bag that held EVERYTHING, but it wouldn't even fit in the underneath part of the stroller and I was tired of lugging it around, so I got a smaller bag for everyday trips to the store, etc and I just use the big bag for when we're going somewhere and staying for a while.
In my small bag:
4 diapers
wipes
Burts Bees skin creme (prevents diaper rash)
extra onesie
changing pad (since this bag is small I use a disposable Huggies Changing pad)
breast pads
I don't carry a purse anymore, so I also have my stuff in the bag:
mini hairbrush, powder, chapstick, lipstick in a ziploc bag
cell phone
checkbook and wallet
I usually grab a bottle of water and a granola bar to keep in the bag for me!
Here's the bag I use-I recommend a small bag for everyday trips...makes life much easier!

--
A diaper kit - very thin mat that folds up into an attached net bag which we stick a diaper and wipes in.
A bag with a set of toddler flat ware, a sipping cup with lid, a thing that makes a bib out of a napkin, wipes and disinfectant so we are always ready to hit a resturant to picnic
sunscreen
toddler sunhat and glasses
A few small toys for distraction when necessary
a small juice box
some kind of easy snack - goldfish, kix, cherrios
some zip lock bags
emergency binki (just in case we forget one on an all day or overnight trip which included sleeping.)
That what I try to make sure is always in there. Other stuff may be added depending on where we are going. These days I try to have a swim diaper with us as well just in case we have the opportinity to get wet.
We have had so few blow outs that I don't carry a spare set of clothes most of the time.
We also keep a playground bag in the car at all times. This has chalk, tennis balls, a pull toy, a swin diaper, a spare outfit, sunsceen, a towel and maybe some snack in it. There are also a few balls on the floor in the backseat. Nice to alway be prepared for stop at a playground without carrying a ton in the diaper bag.

DD is almost 20 months and I have a huge diaper bag, but I love it. I carry:
4-5 diapers
wipes
ziploc bags for dirty diapers
mini bottle of sunscreen
sippy of juice
bottled water (to fill up sippy when juice runs out)
2 bags of snacks
small notepad
bag of crayons
2 small books
a few small toys
an extra onesie
pretty burp cloth
extra pair of nail clippers
I also carry my wallet, cell phone, lip gloss, keys, and pens.
When we're on a quick trip I carry a small purse with a diaper and a small bag of snacks, plus my things.

depends on where we're going-
for a longer trip, I use a bigger bag and have:
*diapers (maybe 4 or so)
*wipes and diaper cream
*changing pad
*bib and burp cloth
*extra outfit and blanket
*extra pacifier
and for myself I add a pad, breast pads, lansinoh cream, hand sanitizer, wallet, keys, cell phone, lip gloss, water, and snacks.
for a short trip, I use my new backpack diaper bag and carry:
*2 or 3 diapers
*wipes and diaper cream (sample size)
*changing pad
*pacifier
*hand sanitizer
and then my basics- cell phone, wallet, lip gloss, and keys.

My list looks exactly like everyone elses. The only thing different that I have, is I bought a disposale camera and keep it in the bag, you never know when a photo op and you need a camera. I just used up the first one in the bag and my DD is almost 5mths old. I just got them developed and it is so cute. The first picture I snapped she was about 2 weeks old and the last one on the camera she was 4 months old. Of course for outings, b-day parties we take our good camera but nice to have and they dont take up too much room.

When DD was small, we had the usual suspects of change of clothes, diapers, changing pad, wipes, burp cloth, etc.
Now that she's 21 months, I just have a big-ish purse with changing pad, wipes, ziploc bag with change of clothes and a diaper or two, plus snacks. There might be a bottle of sunscreen in there too.
Instead of a purse, I got a little wristlet wallet thingie that fits my debit card, DL and cell.

Okay... I think I am the least-prepared mom ever. On a good day, I remember to take a ziploc bag with some diapers, wipes, diaper-disposie bags, hand sanitizer, and a changing pad. Lots of times I am running out the door so fast I just grab a few diapers and shove them into my purse. Sometimes I don't even do that :o . It's pretty rare for DD to need a change while we're running some quick errands, but I really need to start doing better or I'm going to run into trouble one of these days.

OMG. Reading my list from a few months ago- it's nothing compared to what I have now, with 2 kids and a healthy dose of paranoia. I have SO much crap stuffed in my bag. And whenever I take something out because I decide it's ridiculous to have, I end uo needing it the next day.
With two kids, one who is 3 and one who is 3 months, I have-
-3 diapers (cloth, so this takes up mucho space)
-wipes
-spray bottle of wipes solution
-change of clothes for baby
-hat and extra socks for baby
-binky
-disposable wipes for hands, faces, etc.
-dirty diapers bag
-light blanket thing for covering baby and for covering if I am nursing and don't want to show my side-chub :)
-2 empty ziplocs in case of emergency
-bandaids
-small ziploc of finger puppets for three year old meltdowns in long lines
-a sippy of water
-an emergency stash of crackers or goldfish
-hand sanitizer
-at least one sling, if not 2.
-little thingy with shot records and weight and stuff, for doc. appointments.
and for me, I add a compact, pens, agenda, notepad, lipgloss, breathmints, a small deodorant (I walk out the house w/o it all the time), wallet, checkbook, tampons, and a book to read.
I am insane about this. I spend about fifteen minutes before I leave folding and organzing everything, and then it gets rifled through in five minutes, because I can't find anything.

I didn't even own a diaper bag with my first. I would stick a diaper and some wipes in my purse. I also had a blanket and a couple toys in the car seat. When she got old enough for finger foods, I would stick a very small tupperware filled with cheerios or raisins etc in the purse too.
Now, with two, I have a diaper changing station in the back of my SUV. I have a comfy blanket, pack of diapers and tub of wipes there. I can change both kids there very conveniently and avoid the hassle of public restrooms as much as possible. I have also expanded to actually having a diaper bag with toys books, hand sanitizer and snacks but it usually left in the car.

our diaper bag doubles as my purse on the weekends. I won't carry both a purse and the bag, and I don't need a huge bag during the week. I just throw my cell, keys and wallet in the diaper bag and we are good to go.
Other than my stuff, we have the usual dipes, wipes, snacks, sippy cup, sometimes a change of clothes, and usually a small notebook and a couple of crayons.

I loved this thread when I was pregnant, so happy I finally get to contribute!
DS is 3 months old, and while I admit I have everything but the kitchen sink in my diaper bag (maybe they make a travel size kitchen sink I could get? lol, j/k) I have used most, if not all, of the things at least once. Everything in my bag is travel size, so it does take less space.
My diaper bag has two large main compartments, and a small outer zip pocket. I also has mesh side pockets. I also bought 3 smaller zipper pouches to help organize in side. The pink pouch is for me, the beige pouch is for Logan and the black pouch is for diaper changes. Colour coding helpes for better organizing in my baby brain!
Here's what I have in each:
One mesh side pocket holds my keys, the other has a juice box or bottle water for me.
Small outer zip pocket:
Cell phone
hand sanitizer
packet of kleenex
lip balm
extra binky
dried fruit bar (for me)
Main compartment 1:
loose:
my wallet,
sunglass case
receiving blanket
nursing cover up
compact pocket umbrella
Large sunblock tube (i use alot)
organizer
pink pouch: All of my loose things-
mascara
lip balm,
contact solution and contact case,
tums,
hair elastic and hair brush
deoderant
hand moisterizer
mirror
nail clippers
bandaids
extra strength tylenol
Pepto bismal tablets
gravol tablets
beige pouch: All baby loose small things
baby wash
baby moisterizer
baby shampoo
extra bib
extra socks
extra onsie
extra hat
nasal aspirator
baby tylenol
thermometer
washcloth and grape seed oil (cradle cap)
Second main compartment, ie the diaper side:
loose:
Diaper pad
disposible diaper pad
cloth diapers
washable waterproof dirty diaper bag
Black pouch (ie. the small grab and go diaper esential kit):
disposible diaper
homemade wipes in a ziploc
ziplocs for used wipes or the occasional dirty 'sposie
Zinx oxide diaper creme
daily diaper creme
extra cloth diaper cover
CPF cloth diaper
so yeah, type A personality here! lol.

I'm fairly minimalist, I keep:
diapers (2-3)
wipes (we got a plastic travel case free from the hospital and I just refill that)
hand sanitizer
changing pad
light blanket
paci
bottle
to-go formula packets (2)
burp cloth and/or bib
wrist wrattle (which I always forget is in there)
For me I toss in:
wallet
lipgloss
mints
I probably should have an extra change of clothes, but DS never has blowouts or leaks. Tossing in a few ziplock baggies is a good idea, though...

Thanks, JRPAGV! I was wondering if I needed to get some sort of travel case for the wipes / diapers. Also, if people really used those disposable diaper bag things I saw at BRU. I guess so! :) You're welcome. Yeah, I used to try to stuff the regular-sized Pampers wipes case in the diaper bags, and it took up all the room. I finally caved and got a plastic travel case at BRU for like $2.49. The disposable diaper bags are great too. They would be really handy if we went out more often. But, we use them everyday anyway now that DS has started solids. Those dipaer smells work great at holding in odors until babies start solids. Now we just put the dirty diaper in one of those bags, tie it up, then throw it in there. It helps a lot.

Sarah, it is funny you keep updating. You go from little to lots to little. :)

DD is 8 months...I BF and CD. Our diaper bag has:
2-4 diapers (rolled compactly to take up less space...I'll take 6-10 if we're going to visit family...but then I switch to the big bag...this is ridiculous now that I see it typed out because we never use more than 5 diapers in a day)
4 or 5 wipes
Bottle of wipe solution
Changing mat
Wet bag for the dirties
Pacifiers
Cell phone
Wallet
Keys
Gum
Sometimes I add sunscreen, insect repellent, water, a sippy and toys. I also have the reminder card for her ped. appointment in the bottom...oh and the keys to our safe deposit box. My diaper bag becomes a sort of catch-all for junk. Now I know how my mom felt and why her purse was always the size of a small carry-on bag.

Any more suggestions for first time moms?
Specifically hoping to hear what bag you use for everyday, what's in it for your newborn, what you DIDN'T use that you thought you'd need.

For a newborn you barely need anything, especially if you nurse. I think when both my kids were newborns, all I needed was a diaper, a travel pack of wipes, and a onesie. For longer trips I just threw in a couple more diapers.

DS is 6 weeks old, and we BF exclusively
3-4 diapers
changing pad
travel case of wipes
extra onesie and pair of socks
small receiving blanket
box of scented disposable diaper bags (for when I need to trash the diaper)
burp cloth
waterproof lap pad
I just threw it into a cute toile tote bag I have and it has worked out great - very easy to carry, and I have not had the need for anything else. I sometimes carry my purse, and sometimes I don't. I usually carry him in my Kozy Mei Tai (www.kozycarrier.com) and so I stick my ID, credit card, cell phone, and keys into the pouch on there. Lately I have also started carrying nipple cream and a shield in the diaper bag.

My baby is 3 months and I don't carry a diaper bag. I had planned on getting one, but then forgot to do it before she was born. Once she was here, I realized that I didn't actually need one, which was just as well because that means I can still carry a normal purse:D
Instead, I have the skip hop pronto that I keep in the basket under her stroller. It holds a couple of diapers, a travel pack of wipes, and a small bottle of hand sanitizer. It has a built in changing pad as well. I breast feed, so I don't need to have any bottles with me. Oh, and I keep a burp cloth tucked behind the back of the Bundle Me which is permanently installed on her car seat.

I have the Lands End do-it-all diaper bag. Sometimes I get annoyed that it's so big, but OTOH, I'm always cramming stuff in it to get the zipper closed. I really like the wide-mouth design, the snap in 'toiletries ***' and the wetbag it came with. The toiletries *** I use for sippies and wipes (we use cloth so sometimes the container leaks) to keep everything else from getting wet in case of a leak.
My two are 26mo and almost 10months
2 sippy cups
fork for 26mo old (restaurants always seem to have ginormous ones)
snacks
2 diapers for 10 mo old, more for longer trips.
spare pair of underwear and pants for the 26mo old
4-6 wipes
rash cream
spare pacifier
sling or 2
hats for both during the winter if they're not wearing them
sunscreen in the summer
couple books or toys
pads and tampons for me
changing mat
In the beginning I also had burp clothes and bibs and a complete spare outfit (2 for longer trips). With dd1 I leaked a lot so I also carried extra nursing pads and a shirt for me.

Just *bumping* for ideas for my SIL
I have a JJB BePrepared. Such a huge @$$ bag, but I tell ya, whenever I try to downsize and leave out a few things, I ended up needing whatever I left out!
When DD was a newborn:
6 diapers
1 large Kirkland brand wipes
1 tube of diaper cream
2 bibs
2 burp cloths
1 sleeper
2 onesies
1 comlete outfit (depending on weather)
1 pair of socks
2 6 oz. bottles
1 bottle of water
container of pre-measured formula
1 disposable diaper pad
1 receiving blanket
1 thick blanket
1 Zippered water-proof pouch containing travel-sized:
- Baby Tylenol/Motrin
- Mylicon
- baby powder
- baby lotion
- baby J&J wash
- extra pacifier
- Tide stick
Now that DD is 11 months old, I tried to omit things because I had to add things (although, as you can see, I still carry around a lot!)
- one less burp cloth, bib, and bottle.
- added:
1 disposable bib
1 sippy cup of water
1 container of snacks
1 disposable table mat
1 bottle of teething tablets
1 spoon
Baby cereal, baby food (depending on how long we are out of the house. She's starting to eat regular food now, so I suspect this will soon be omitted too.)
Small toys to keep her occupied
Her blankie
And in the zippered pouch, I added:
- neosporin
- bandaides
- sunscreen
I know, I'm nuts. But I just feel better about carrying more stuff. I do use a smaller bag for quick trips anc carry the essentials: diaper, wipes, bottle, formula
