I really enjoyed Cinderella Man. My husband did too. He turned to me halfway through one of the really good fight scences and happily said, "It's just like Rocky" Ugg, I hate Rocky but I loved this movie.

My friend and I went to see The Perfect Man on Saturday and I thought it was a really cute movie. Then again, I love cheesy movies.

It was predictable, yes. But entertaining. Besides, being a SATC fan I'll take any chance I can to see Mr. Big!

i rented Maria Full of Grace from netflix and watched it this evening. It was so good!

http://cdn.nflximg.com/us/boxshots/large/60034788.jpg

Maria Full of Grace is the harrowing story of an atypical drug-running "mule." Maria Alvarez (Catalina Sandino Moreno, whose portrayal earned her an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead) is a smart, independent 17-year-old girl from Colombia who agrees to smuggle a half-kilo of heroin into the United States for a shot at a normal existence in the magical land of "El Norte" -- where she imagines the city streets must be paved with gold.

Awards:
2005 Academy Award: Best Actress nominee: Catalina Sandino Moreno
2004 Sundance Film Festival: Audience Award: Drama
2004 Sundance Film Festival: Jury Prize: Drama nominee
2005 Independent Spirit Awards: Best Female Lead: Catalina Sandino Moreno
2005 Independent Spirit Awards: Best Feature nominee
2005 Independent Spirit Awards: Best Director nominee: Joshua Marston
2005 Independent Spirit Awards: Best Supporting Female nominee: Yenny Paola Vega

DH and I have been watching a ton of movies lately. Last night, we saw "The People V/S Larry Flynt" on video-on-demand. I thought I would hate it since I've never thought very highly of the title character in question, but this movie ended up being very, very thought provoking and also changed my whole opinion of Larry Flynt. Definitely worth watching.

I saw a great movie this weekend that I have to recommend to all of you. It's called "Murderball," but don't be put off by the title. :) It's a documentary and it definitely one of the best films I've seen all year. It made me laugh, it made me think-- really awesome. It'll be playing at your local art house theatre. L.A. girls, it's playing at the Sunset 5 and at the Westside Pavillion.

Synopsis:
A film about quadriplegics who play full-contact rugby in Mad Max-style wheelchairs - overcoming unimaginable obstacles to compete in the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.

I definitely second Netflix. It is so helpful to me to keep track of the DVDs I want to see on my list there. They also list the new releases, so I always check to see what's coming out. :)

This weekend, we watched:

* A Very Long Engagement (excellent, a must see)
* Rory O'Shea Was Here (wonderful, funny, touching; highly recommended)
* Are We There Yet? (cute, silly humor)

I saw a screening of PROOF last night (starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins).

It was very good. Definitely dramatic-- and it's a character study, not anything action-packed. The acting was really impressive (I would expect Gwyneth and probably Anthony Hopkins as well to be nominated for Oscars). I thought the storyline was moving and interesting.

Plot Outline: The daughter of a brilliant but mentally disturbed mathematician, recently deceased, tries to come to grips with her possible inheritance; his insanity. Complicating matters are: one of her father's ex-students who wants to search through his papers, and her estranged sister who shows up to help settle his affairs.

This weekend we are planning to see THE CONSTANT GARDNER which I've heard great things about. It's getting very good reviews and a few friends of mine who've seen advance screenings have raved.

Plot Outline: Based on the best-selling John le Carré novel and from the Academy Award-nominated director of "City of God." In a remote area of Northern Kenya, activist Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz) is found brutally murdered. Tessa's companion, a doctor, appears to have fled the scene, and the evidence points to a crime of passion. Members of the British High Commission in Nairobi assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered and unambitious colleague Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), will leave the matter to them. They could not be more wrong. Haunted by remorse and jarred by rumors of his late wife's infidelities, Quayle surprises everyone by embarking on a personal odyssey that will take him across three continents. Using his privileged access to diplomatic secrets, he will risk his own life, stopping at nothing to uncover and expose the truth - a conspiracy more far-reaching and deadly than Quayle could ever have imagined.

I saw The Constant Gardner last weekend. Would be curious to hear what everyone else thinks of it. Great performances, interesting topic & politics, nice visual style. Certainly very different from "City of God," the director's last film. Don't want to say too much until everyone else sees it, but would love to hear your thoughts!

Last night we saw a Belgian movie called The Memory of a Killer that I thought was really good. (It's De Zaak Alzheimer in Belgian if you look it up on IMDB.com). It was released in Europe in 2003 (and swept the Belgian version of the Oscars) but we're only just getting it now. I thought it was great and if it's playing near you it's worth seeing.

Synopsis: International hitman Angelo Ledda is hired to terminate two people in Belgium. The only catch: Ledda has advanced symptoms of Alzheimer's. Upon his arrival in Belgium, Ledda finishes part one of the job, eliminating a top government official. Detectives Eric Vincke and Freddy Verstuyft are appointed to conduct the murder investigation. When Ledda realizes that his second target is a 12-year-old girl, he breaks his contract, haunted by memories of his own troubled past. Now that he's knockin' on heaven's door, he sets out to avenge the transgressions of his youth.

We finally saw March of the Penguins last weekend. I felt like the last person in the world who hadn't seen it! LOL. It was really sweet. Those penguins are *so* adorable. And it's really amazing what they endure year after year. I felt like maybe this movie would be better for kids than adults (it's a little simple at times) but I was definitely entertained. I've seen better documentaries this year (like "Murderball", which was just incredible), but I'd expect "March of the Penguins" to get an Oscar nomination next year.

I saw Capote last night. It was an interesting film, not without it's flaws, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Definitely thought-provoking. If you haven't heard much about it, it's about the writer Truman Capote struggling to write "In Cold Blood" while developing an intense relationship with one of the convicted murderers he is writing about.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is DEFINTELY going to be nominated for his acting in this film. He does an extraordinary job- the best acting I've seen this year.

Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello are great in this film, which is about a small town family dealing with threats from mobsters who arrive in their town. As the title would suggest, it's violent. But it's really an interesting musing on the capability we all have for violence-- I found it thought-provoking. And there are a couple of great plot twists.

I was really suprised by how much I liked this movie. It's smart and on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspenseful. It's about two young brothers who find themselves launched into outer space after playing a mysterious board game. There's lots of action and heart.

I saw King Kong this weekend and thought it was awesome!

It's really suspenseful & action packed in parts and really emotional in other parts. King Kong looked great- very realistic effects. Naomi Watts did an incredible job as Ann Darrow. Wonderful acting from her and she just looks the part so perfectly. It's a big, big blockbuster kind of movie and really worth going to see! I really enjoyed it.

I have to recommend 'The Chronicles of Narnia'! I never read the books, so when we went I wasn't sure if I'd love it or hate it. But I loved it! You have to go into it knowing that you're watching a children's story on film, but I love that sort of thing.

As a side note, any RPGers out there may be able to identify with some of the scenes...I'm a huge Zelda fan and sometimes I felt like I was IN the game!*

Syriana was fabulous. Extremely thought provoking and well done. I told my husband after it was over that I felt like I needed a shower to wash off all of the "dirt" exposed by this movie. You really do have to pay attention to the movie to understand it, which I really appreciate and find rare these days.

I've seen tons of movies lately!

The Chronicles of Narnia - I really enjoyed this movie, even more than I expected to. I haven't read the book since I was a kid but I hear from others who have read it more recently that it stuck to the book storyline pretty closely.
http://cdn.channel.aol.com/mf_movies/19417_p_m

Fun with Dick & Jane - This was cute & funny, although obviously very unrealistic. Good light entertainment, though.
http://cdn.channel.aol.com/mf_movies/17841_p_m

Munich - I agree with the previous posters' reviews of this movie - it was very well done & I enjoyed it very much. It's long (just short of 3 hours) but it really kept my attention right up until the end. Good cast, good acting, well-told story. A must see, in my book.
http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/universal_pictures/munich/munich_earlyposter.jpg

The Family Stone - I enjoyed this one, too. It was a decent romantic comedy with a good cast, however there is a sad storyline that they don't show in the previews. It's well-done, though.
http://cdn.channel.aol.com/mf_movies/22035_p_m

The Ringer - Saw this only because DH *really* wanted to go. It was funny & wasn't entirely unenjoyable, but it's definitely not a contender for any awards or anything. Basically the guy pretends to be developmentally disabled so that he can enter & win the Special Olympics to win money. He needs the money for a good cause...but still.
http://cdn.channel.aol.com/mf_movies/18460_p_m

Rumor Has It - Just saw this yesterday, & I really enjoyed it! It was funny & entertaining, & had a nice, satisfying ending. Shirley MacLaine was a riot.

We just saw Syriana last night and god, was it good. The story was suspenseful and intriguing and though reviewers said it was hard to follow, I disagreed. Pbviously I was more receptive to the message of the film (being liberal and all) but having grown up surrounded by the oil industry those parts, at least, seemed very realistic.

DH & I went to see Brokeback Mountain tonight, & it was excellent. I was really impressed with Heath Ledger in particular - he really was amazing. The movie was a bit slow at times & I didn't think they did a very good job of aging the 2 main characters over the 20 years the movie was supposed to span, but those are really my only complaints. DH & I both enjoyed the movie, & we had a great conversation about it in the car on the way home - it really made us think. Now I know why it's been nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes, & I hope it wins! :)

I have to definitely recommend WALK THE LINE. I didn't know any Johnny Cash music prior to the movie and I have to say, i loved this movie so much. I haven't seen it recommended which makes me sad. It was seriously a wonderful movie. Made me laugh and cry and just all around happy then sad and then happy again! it was just wonderful!

Has anyone seen Underworld 2 yet? We were supposed to see it this weekend but the weather kept us in. I'm reading the book right now and can't wait to see it. Hopefully we'll catch it this weekend.
I loved the first one.

If youve seen it what did you think?

Coming in a little late Katyanne, but DH and I saw Underworld Evolution this past Monday and really liked it. We hadn't seen the first one (actually didn't know there was a first one, until we watched the previews), but I didn't feel lost at all because of that. One thing is is that it's pretty gory, but not so much that I couldn't watch. Hopefully you'll like it even after reading the book.

I'm bumping this up b/c I have been renting some BAD movies lately.

In the past week, I have rented and not liked "The Family Stone" and "Prime" (although each had some good moments, overall they were...eh.). I am now watching "Elizabethtown," and am seriously wondering why I haven't shut it off. It is shockingly bad, and I think there is a half hour left, and someone is doing a "Freebird" cover. That doesn't bode well for the last few minutes.

Please help--there must be something decent to rent out there! Usually if I'm feeling frail enough to stay in and watch a movie, I want something undemanding and entertaining, but I'll consider anything to break this streak.

I just rented "Rumor Has It". It was pretty good. I don't care for Jennifer Anniston all that much and rented it mainly for Shirley Maclaine. I thought it was pretty funny actually considering I had no interest in seeing it in the theater.

I kinda liked Prime. I pretty much love Uma Thurman, though. ;)

We watched something I intensely disliked last night - A History of Violence. The plot was seriously lacking. Worse, they seemed to use the crap story as an excuse for two very graphic sex scenes that did nothing to move the plot or our understanding of the characters forward. It drug on far too long, too. I really couldn't recommend it for anyone.

The other night we finally watched Kicking & Screaming on HBO on Demand. I kept hearing how cute it is, but I didn't rush to see it because I thought it might be too kid oriented. I thought it was so cute and quite funny. I adore Will Ferrell and Robert Duvall. Some of the kids are so adorable. The stuff with Mike Ditka is hilarious, too. :)

I agree History of Violence had no plot, the whole movie seriously annoyed me.

My dh and I loved Swimming Upstream with Geoffrey Rush & Judy Davis. Wonderful drama.

Recently also enjoyed:

The Squid and the Whale (loved it !)

Constant Gardener

Junebug (loved this indie pic)

Prime (I really enjoyed this, thought it had some plot problems but loved to see Meryl in a funny role)

Fun w/Dick & Jane (mindless funny movie)

Millions

Code 46

Maybe Baby

Dear Frankie

Also, we loved Empire Falls, which is a two disk mini-series.

Didn't like
Elizabethtown
Melinda & Melinda
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (two very pretty people, no acting, no plot)
A Lot Like Love
North Country (some good performances, not cohesive)

Well, it depends on what kind of movies you like and what you've seen, but I would recommend:

-Chronicles of Narnia (I love, love, love this movie-after I saw it I was telling everyone to go see it)
-Just Like Heaven
-Rumor Has It
-Walk the Line (Reese Witherspoon & Joaquin Phoenix were amazing-it's worth it just to hear them singing)
-In Good Company
-Love Actually (I own this one because I love it so much)
-Brokeback Mountain
-Miss Congeniality, 1 & 2 (fun, cute movies)
-Dodgeball, Wedding Crashers, 40-year old Virgin, Anchorman (these ones are pretty crude, but are good for a few laughs)
-Yours, Mine and Ours; Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, and Cheaper by the Dozen (not the best movies, but really cute)
-Casanova (with Heath Ledger-I saw this in the theater and it was a fun movie)
-In Her Shoes (just watched it last night for the third time and I still like it!)
And some classics that are fun to watch after a long time:
Moulin Rouge, Clueless, Dirty Dancing (I've watched all of these in the last 2 weeks), the Breakfast Club

Those are some of my favourites, but I could go on and on (sometimes I can't choose a movie because I've seen so many!)

Whatever you do, don't rent Munich. It's soooooo long and boring!

Whatever you do, don't rent Munich. It's soooooo long and boring!Hm. I found it fascinating. I was just a very young child when this happened and I never really knew a lot of the details - just the broad scope of what happened. I found the movie riveting in showing how the Mossad tracked down the terrorists and what happened to them ultimately. (And then, of course I had to research it online and pick up a few books ... 'cause I'm a geek like that. :))

I did find the story interesting, but the reason I found it boring was because it dragged on for 3 hours (seemed a little excessive to me-they probably could have told the story in less time). Oh, and the end was kinda weird, when he was with his wife.

Other semi-recent movie suggestions:

Walk the Line
The Bourne Supremecy

Million Dollar Baby

DH and I watched it this past week too. I loved it! I was surprised that it was so funny! I saw Monster House in the theatre last night and really enjoyed it. It's fun, fast-paced and the characters are adorable. My only caveat is that I think it's too scary for little kids. I'd suggest maybe age 9 and up. But it's not just for kids-- all the adults in our theatre seemed to be really into it. So, I definitely recommend going to see Monster House!

Some movies that we've seen recently that I definitely recommend:

16 Blocks (Awesome- Bruce Willis and Ludacris are amazing in this movie!)

Rumor Has It (I know this one didn't get great reviews, but I liked it and DH did too!)

For you horror movie fans out there; The Hills Have Eyes (2006). I've seen it twice already. Great movie, good story. Be warned; it is exceptionally gory in places.

Hustle & Flow (Great, great, great story. Kept me totally engrossed.)

Wolf Creek (Another horror movie; although I'd put it more in the thriller category. I practically chewed my nails to the quick watching it)

This one is an older flick, but I actually just saw it for the first time and really really liked it: The Scent of A Woman

I will also second the recommendation for Underworld Evolution, but I would recommend seeing the first one just to get some background on it.

Saw a bunch of movies over the holidays.

Accepted was actually much better and funnier than what we were expecting. Good for some laughs.

The Descent scared the crap out of me a couple of times; but it reminded me of a movie done last year in similiar vein; The Cave. Not bad, but we were struggling to see what was going on alot, the lighting was beyond horrible. Then again, it was supposed to be set underground in a cave...

Talladega Nights Eh. It was funny at times and DH loved it, but I found it way too over the top for me. Bordering on slapstick or spoof humor. Will Ferrell was good in it, but not one of my favorite's of his.

Invincible Really good movie, great story and better since its based on a true story. The only thing that disappointed me in this one is that it didn't really go into his entire career with the Eagles, just his first two regular season games. But still a good one to watch.

You, Me & Dupree Liked this one alot, very funny and it moved along pretty quickly. Owen Wilson definitely has his little niche in comedy films. I like Kate Hudson, but wasn't entirely sure this role was one for her.

The other funny part is when they left her at the gas station and had to go back to get her. My husband swears he's funny, right? So we were at a gas station one day and he was finished before me and went back and got in the car. I get outside and he's gone. I knew he was playing a trick on me, so I just waited there laughing. He comes back into the parking lot at a semi-slow pace but never stops, yelling at me out the window, "C'mon Olive, I can't stop the car!!"

I'm surprised Lady in the Water is getting dumped on so much. I know it got bad reviews, but they set it up in previews to be a scary movie, and that wasn't at all the point. It was a children's fairy tale, in fact, one M. Night himself told to his kids. I thought it was quite interesting and funny if you go in expecting a fantasy-type movie. And the poking fun of and offing of the movie critic was pretty funny, too, especially in the way they set it up and his speech before he goes. I love Paul Giamatti too.

Is that why people didn't like it, because they were expecting a different genre of movie? I still think M. Night Shyamalan is a great story-teller, and I've loved all his movies, in different ways. DH and I were set up for a disappointment, and we both quite liked it.

Loved The Departed. Leonardo was great, and I have to admit Matt Damon played a great bad guy even though I don't care for him. Jack Nicholson was a great mobster, as expected.

Little Miss Sunshine was wonderful and The Devil Wears Prada, as much as I wanted to dislike it (not a fan of the chick-lit stuff), I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, as did DH.

I could watch the dinner table scene in Talladega Nights over and over again, but the rest of the movie was eh. I'm also not a big Will Farrell fan.

DH and I are *way* behind in movie watching, but I thought I could still share my thoughts on those we've seen recently. :)

The Last Kiss - I highly recommend it. It was different than I expected because I made the mistake of thinking it would be another Garden State. But I really loved it. I adore Zac Braff (even though he was less than lovable in this), and I thought Jacinda Barrett was awesome. It is so weird to see her making her way in Hollywood as a serious actress after seeing her on The Real World in London. Overall, it was an awesome cast and a good story that was told in a compelling way.

Freedomland - I recently caught this (finally) on HBO, and I was just blown away. I thought it was incredibly powerful and compelling. It's very dark and not so uplifting, but well worth watching.

Of those already mentioned, I echo the recommendations for The Devil Wears Prada and Little Miss Sunshine. I was disappointed by Talladega Nights. There were some very funny jokes, but it just wasn't good enough, IMHO. I guess I'm always hoping to like that kind of movie as much as Old School or Wedding Crashers. ;) Maybe I'd have appreciated it more if I followed racing at all.

DH and I both like horror and thriller-type movies. This weekend we saw The Pulse on PPV and it was not good. Extremely disjointed storytelling and completely unrealistic. We kept looking at each other like "okay, this has to get better at some point." It didn't.

Also saw The Breakup and we both really liked it. Vince Vaughn was very funny in this movie and Jennifer Anniston was suited for this role. You could definitely see the sparks flying between them! I'm not sure why some people hated the ending, I thought it was very fitting and was glad it wasn't the typical storybook ending that you usually get in these type of movies.

Yeah, I think we can blame the studio for the completely misleading promos (I think he's said he didn't like them). And there was no twist in this one. Neither was there one in Signs, IIRC.

This could be why I didn't enjoy either film!

I think those who haven't read the book will enjoy The Devil Wears Prada more. I found some of the changes from the book completely unrealistic. In the book, the catalyst for her awakening is when her friend overdoses. In the movie, she just kind of wanders off randomly. However, the outfits were enough eye candy to keep me occupied, no matter how much they hacked up the plot!

I know I'm one of few who loved Talladega Nights. Growing up in a Nascar fanatic family, I really enjoyed the parodies and how they took the stereotypes to the extreme. Someone with no knowledge of the sport might not get much out of it.

We also rented Clerks II and recommend it to those of you who like that type of humor. DH and I laughed so hard...it's so WRONG on so many levels but totally hilarious!

We have Little Miss Sunshine but haven't watched it yet. We also rented Cars but have yet to see it (DH's pick).

Is that why people didn't like it, because they were expecting a different genre of movie? I still think M. Night Shyamalan is a great story-teller, and I've loved all his movies, in different ways. DH and I were set up for a disappointment, and we both quite liked it.

Nope. I thought Lady in the Water was really pretentious, without any substance behind that pretention. I thought the exposition was clunky, the story unfocused and unsatisying and the acting subpar. The cast was too large, with too many character arcs to pay off in a short period of time (and thus, I didn't care about the characters or feel that their arcs were necessarily completed at all). IMO, this is a movie that needed way more time in development to work out the kinks in the story. And a director that didn't take a middling story quite so seriously. Sorry... I really hated it.

I recently saw The Pursuit of Happyness, and I liked it a lot more than I thought I was going to (I was afraid it might be too "schmaltzy" for me). Will Smith and his son give good performances. Will Smith is always so darn likeable, and that's certainly true here. I did think the second act got very repetitive, and I wish they'd focused a little less on the father/son relationship and a little more on the internship.... but an enjoyable moviegoing experience. This would definitely be a good rental if you don't catch it in the theatre.

Hey, that's fair. I didn't have a problem with the actors, but there were a lot of characters to keep track of. I just expected it to be much worse given all the bad pub. And yeah, I agree that he took his little bedtime story a bit too seriously;).

Little Miss Sunshine was wonderful and The Devil Wears Prada, as much as I wanted to dislike it (not a fan of the chick-lit stuff), I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, as did DH.

Ditto, except for the DH part. My favorite movie last year was Half-Nelson, or as I like to call it, the "crackhead teacher movie." I can't recommend it enough.

We really liked The Guardian too! I agree, it was predictable to a point, but still a good story.

For horror movie people; DH and I recently saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. It was as good, if not better, than the one they released in 2003. Very gory, very intense and just plain scary as hell.

We also watched Saw III. This was excellent too! The story wraps up alot of loose ends and actually goes back and offers explanations for some of the stuff from parts 1 & 2, which we weren't expecting. Another movie that is pretty high on the gore and gross-out scale and in a very vivid way. A certain scene involving brain surgery comes to mind...;) Anyway, definitely worth watching, but you have to be paying attention to catch everything!

It was good, but I say this reluctatnly since I had a hard time rooting for the protagonist, D-Jay (brilliantly portrayed by Terrence Howard) because he was a pimp. I know that everyone, including pimps, have dreams and aspirations, but I just couldn't get past the pimp thing. Terrance Howard did do a hell of a job though and I was happy to see Anthony Anderson play something other than a clown. Taryn Manning scares me.

I had it on my Netflix queue had but forgotten about it when it was sent out. We were going to send it back without watching it, but finally did last night. I thought it was entertaining. There were certainly a few scary/suspensful scenes, for those wanting that. I was tense through much of the movie. What I liked best was how the story came together. It was the anticipation of something big happening that kept me entertained.

ETA. Maybe I didn't get enough bedtime stories when I was little... lol

We watched The Death of Mr. Lazarescu this weekend. It was on like every critic's Top 10 List for 2006, so I was really excited about it. 2 hours and 20 minutes later I was way less excited, believe me. It is not a slasher-type flick and there was no blood and gore to be found. Just very entertaining. Our only complaint was there some stuff in the movie that just didn't seem to be explained..almost like a specific storyline was already established before they shot the movie and forgot to cue the audience in on some things. I cannot run around telling everyone "you have to see this movie", because for me it was emotionally wrenching and upsetting through a great deal of the movie. But it was, at the end of the day, a very good story. I don't know, maybe it was pregnancy hormones but I cried more than once while watching it. The hardest part was just the fact that it was about 9/11 and I still have trouble watching scenes from that day. OTOH...United 93 was far, far worse as far as being hard to watch. Anyway, I do think the movie is worth watching. Just have a box of tissues nearby.

I have a question though...in white. Was Jessica Biel given some type of drug to make her appear dead? She was indeed floating in the water right? The Departed
I really loved this even though it was violent and bloody as all get out. The story had a really cool take on good and evil.

For Your Consideration
This disappointed me. I usually love all of Christopher Guest's movies, but this one kinda sucked.

The Sentinel
It was okay. I liked the premise well enough, but some of the specifics didn't make a ton of sense to me.

The Devil's Playground
This is a documentary about Rumspringa. It covered a lot of the same ground as a book I read last year on the subject, but it was good.

I just saw The Departed last night and enjoyed it. I am wondering though (in white), what was in that envelope he handed the psych? I am assuming it was documentation saying who he was and how the bf was corrupt?

2 recent rentals:

The Holiday - YUCK! I actually turned it off about 20 mins from the end because I did not care what happened. I did not like any of the characters, especially Cameron Diaz.

Blood Diamond - Great movie! I am now wondering the origins of my engagement ring :( . I have made a pact that if I ever were to get diamonds again in my life (a girl can wish!) that they will be guarateed "conflict free".

I loved this too. I've been on a movie watching kick & recently saw these on netflix.

Loved The Departed, Sarah Silverman, Jesus is Magic, Lawrence of Arabia, Half Nelson & Quincenera. Hated For your Consideration, Crimes of the Heart & The Holiday. Thought Leave her to Heaven , The Last Kiss & Trust the Man were ok.

Saw The Illusionist recently and liked it. I was stuck on a plane for 13 hours, but I enjoyed it. In fact, I could not watch Dream Girls even on the flight.

Dirty Love, 2005 Jenny McCarthy- One of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time! A+

Children of Men Interesting but unrealistic in parts and the ending could have been alot better. It's almost like they did an abrupt ending to save money. B-

Illusionist Beginning is captivating, middle is boring, ending will re-grab your attention. Overall I liked it but think it could have been written better. B

The Holiday Liked it, not great but didn't think it was horrible. B

A Good Year, Russell Crowe- Liked this one, not a top rental but husband and I thought it was good. B+

The Departed Excellent. DH and I both liked it. A

Here are a few too:

I'm Not Scared - In Italian --this caused me to scream out in the theater!
Pan's Labyrinth - In Spanish --but I've thought about quite a bit since I saw it.
Any of the movies in AFI's top 100! My goal is to see them all. We just saw Some Like It Hot and loved it! We also recently saw and loved Lawrence of Arabia.

Same here. Crowe isn't on my list of fav. actors and when I found out it was about boxing...ehh. But I was pleasantly surprised.

Blood Diamond - Excellent movie!

Curse of the Golden Flower - I'm a fan of Chow Yun Fat, so I was eager to see this. :) The film is Beautiful. The story is very Shakespearean. I would recommend it to anyone.

Here's an update of some things I've seen recently.

Casino Royale - I loved this. One of the best Bond movies in a long time.

This Film is Not Yet Rated - Ditto what's already been said. Very eye opening.

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints - Fantastic. It's a moving autobiography about a guy's rough upbringing and how he escaped the same fate as his friends and family. It's got a great cast, too.

Take the Lead - I'm admittedly a sucker for a dance movie, but this one was well done.

The Lake House - I liked it better than I expected to, but I thought it was kinda hard to follow and a bit of a stretch. Not awful, though.

The Groomsmen - I guess I'm always hoping Edward Burns will come up with a movie I'll love as much as She's the One. This isn't it, but it was okay.

The Good Shepherd - I was disappointed by this. Some aspects of it were great, but it moved *so* slow.

The Holiday - Kinda cute. I loved the Jude Law and Kate Winslet characters, but also thought the story was contrived and somewhat annoying.

Blood Diamond Great movie..I had trouble watching some of the violent parts though.

The Good Sheperd I can't even give this a fair review right now as we have tried twice to watch it and fell asleep both times...its almost three hours long! When we woke up, it was just getting exciting, but we turned it off in hopes of being able to watch it later. BBL to post about this one.

The Prestige DH and I both thought it was rather hard to follow at times and we didn't care for the ending at all.

Dh and I recently rented
The Illusionist and loved it. Something a little bit different that you haven't seen done over and over again.

Also saw the Prusuit of Happyness for the first time. Niether of us loved it. We both thought it was slow and the ending didn't make up for the rest of the dragged out movie. Definatly dissapointed:(

Forgot about this one:

School of Scoundrels Eh. It had its moments of comedy, but it just didn't quite do it for me. I know DH liked it alot more than I did. Then again, he's a big fan of Jon Heder and I'm not. (I hate the fact that every character he plays reminds me of him in Napolean Dynamite. A good actor should have been able to shake that personna by now..)

Casino Royale - I really liked this. One of the most INTERESTING Bond films in years - and Daniel Craig is yum - I like my Bond a little tougher!

The Holiday - I loved everyone in the movie except Cameron Diaz. The story itself was just ok. It was cute, but there are better romantic comedies out there.

The Prestige - Very strange and interesting movie, it was too long for me and the end was creepy.

Stranger than Fiction - I wasn't sure about this one - but ended up really liking it. Just loved the concept and the melancholy of it. I loved the moment when he says he's in a comedy, but as the audience you know it's a tragedy. And the process the writer goes through was great too.

I just saw Upside of Anger. It was an alright movie. Definite chick-flick so if you are looking for that type of movie one night you should see it. The twist at the end was heartbreaking.

ITA!! I rented this movie last weekend. I loved it, but have been frought with sadness about my engagement ring and all the diamonds I see around me! I too, have decided that if I ever get diamonds again, I want them to be conflict free!

This movie was highly educational and VERY well done because SO many of us have written the SAME sentences! :)

OMG - this movie was awful. Probably the worst one I've ever seen and I had high hopes for it. The whole time I was trying to figure out what in the heck was going on. The visual images were beautiful in the theater, but everything else is not good. I don't recommend renting it. Or even watching it if it ever is aired on TV.

Aurora Borealis? Curious if this was any good.

National Lampoon's Van Wilder, The Rise of Taj DH's pick:rolleyes:, funny movie for the not so serious.

Little Children I don't even know where to begin. Not what I expected. I liked it but didn't like it. Had a lot going on to keep your attention that is for sure.

Night at the Muesum Was much, much better than DH and I were expecting. Its like every kid's fantasy come true and the special effects were great. We were a tad disappointed with the ending, which failed to tie up some loose ends, but other than that, we loved it.

Touristas Eh. It had its moments, but for the most part, was just a repeat of Hostel, which was waaaaay better than this one. Still (in white)...the live organ harvesting scene almost made it worth watching. And it was rather suspenseful at times.

We've recently seen:

Children of Men - I liked this movie, but it was a bit distrubing for me (possibly because I have an over-active imagination ;) ). May read the book, thinking about it....

Wimbledon - cute love story, but something different. I was fascinated by the way they filmed the tennis shots.
