We've recently seen:
Catch and Release - Cute, I love Jennifer Garner and liked all the characters in this movie. Great soundtrack too.
and
Half Nelson - Some great acting by Ryan Gossling, I thought this was an interesting subject matter and very believeable.

Children of Men A compelling story and it moved right along. Definitely worth watching. Of course, me being pregnant, it definitely gave me pause for thought, DH too. We liked it.
Van Wilder 2, Rise of Taj Blech...so not worth watching without the guy who played Van in the first movie. DH said it was okay, but considering how hilarious I found the first one to be, there is no comparison in my mind. None.

Catch and Release: fun chick flick :)
Apocalypto: trite. I kept thinking, "Surly they won't do X, Y, or Z, because that would be pretty predictable," and sure enough, they do X, Y, and Z.
The Fountain: was bored to tears the 1st 15 minutes, so stopped the movie, read the IMDB boards to figure out WTH was going on, and at least understood the rest of it. Would give it about a 5/10 rating.
The Last Kiss with Zach Braff: interesting movie w/good characters, but fairly depressing (was expecting more of a chick flick)

Latest Netflix rentals.... We use the 5 star ratings from Netflix (blended score from me and the hubby)
The Good Sheperd - long, not that interesting. 2.5
Blood Diamond - okay, predictable. 3
Flags Of Our Fathers - Long, boring, according to my husband it was not nearly as good as the book. 1.5

I watched The Queen tonight. It was an excellent movie. Helen Mirren deserved every award that she won. Throughout the movie I felt as if I was watching Queen Elizabeth II instead of Helen.
Funny how I watched this movie on Princess Diana's birthday.
The Painted Veil - both Edward Norton and Naomi Watts were excellent and the story was amazing. The music was an important part of the movie as well and it was very moving.

Just watched
Clerks 2 - Very funny, very crude, and just about as good as the first one.
11:14 - Really liked this one. It's got some interesting twists, and I loved seeing how all of the stories were connected.
Friends With Money - I should have listened to what everyone here had to say about it, as it was soooo bad! Stupid ending and horribly annoying characters.
Notes on a Scandal - Made me very uncomfortable, but it was a good, well-acted movie.
The Good German - Terrible story, but cinematography was great. I wouldn't recommend it.
Volver - Loved it! It was emotional yet lighthearted at times. I really like Pedro Almodóvar's work.

Notes on a Scandal - I'm not sure how I feel about this movie. It was alright. I agree with yby1, the acting was good. The kid really bothered me though, he was such a little shit.
Children of Men - I didn't really care for this movie. It seemed to drag on and the end just left me feeling really unsatisfied. After it was over I really just couldn't figure out why I'd just watched it.
Borat - It's old but I just saw it recently for the first time. I really don't like Sasha Baron Cohen but this movie was hilarious! It's one I'd like to buy.
Little Children - Yikes. This was a weird one. The actor who played the sex offender was SO creepy. I guess it was worth watching but I'd never watch it again.
The Queen - I rented this on a whim and I'm really glad I did. The acting was quite impressive and I thought it was a very interesting movie. I thought it would be boring but it wasn't at all. Helen Mirren did a fantastic job. I agree with kugrrly, there were times when I forgot I was watching a movie. She was amazing.
I have the Upside of Anger, White Oleander, I Heart Huckabees and Bobby at home right now. Thanks, Blockbuster online! :D

I just finished Bobby and I'm just in shock. I think it was a phenomenal account of what happened. I didn't really know much about Robert Kennedy but seeing this movie made me want to learn more. Just the tidbits of his speeches they used were amazing. It's too bad, he seemed like a really good man who could have done a lot for this country.
Anyway the point of my rambling is - see this movie. It was put together so well. A lot of times these historical movies are crap but this one was great. You can tell that it was put together with a lot of care and sincerity.

Some recent flicks...
Breach--4 stars! great movie. DH and I both enjoyed it. Ryan Phillipe proves himself a good actor in this one.
Brothers--3 stars. Danish flick, so be prepared to read. Interesting twists. Good story.
The Holiday--2.5 stars. It was just eh. You knew what was going to happen. Nonetheless it is entertaining.
Letters from Iwo Jima--4 stars! Great film. Subtitles. Enjoyed very much
Surftraitor - I'm glad you liked Brothers. :) You should also check out After the Wedding, it's another great film by Susanne Bier.
Recent movies
Half Nelson - Interesting subject matter. The theme being taught in in history class about how history is made is very relevant to the protagonists story - which was sad, but hopeful toward the end. Good movie.
The Host - Great monster movie. Watch it before Universal botches it up with the remake. If you have Netflix, put it in your queue now (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Host/70059029). :)

Last night we watched Premonition and I loved it. I thought it would be hard to follow since it goes back and forth, but it wasn't and I thought it was a great movie.
If you rent it, definately see the Alternate Ending, then watch the Gag Reel. Especially after such a drama, a good laugh is what I needed. :)

I have to disagree about premonition. I saw it the day it came to DVD and was disappointed. I thought it had potential but the ending just stunk. In white: She knew how he was going to die (or so she thought) and she was the one who caused the death the whole time. Also, the days he was alive and then dead are very confusing. When they are on the days he is dead was that just a dream. I think there could have been other things done to make it less confusing.

We saw Ghostrider earlier this week. AWESOME!!! Nick Cage was perfection in this role, like he was born to play it. And the special effects are truly spectacular. We watched this on Blue Ray and it was eye-popping! Must see!!

About Premonition in white:
So the last day was Saturday when they committed her, right? How did she go from committed to all happy and pregnant? And why did he go to the life insurance place on Wednesday? Did he plan on killing himself or faking his death? Who turns around in the road and just stays there?

Andrea - The whole movie was a mess and poorly plotted. There were so many questions I had after watching the thing. Its been about a month since I have seen it so I can't really answer your questions. I also wonder why he even went to the insurance place?

Andrea- I agree with shopaholic, the whole movie was a mess. There were a couple times where they were flashing ahead or back when they just ignored things, the most blatant example were the cuts on the daughter. There were times when they flashed back or forward when she should have had them and she didn't, I found it to be obnoxious. I don't think we know the answers to your questions, but it has been a while since I've seen it too. I really didn't like the movie, so I haven't put much thought into it since leaving the theater.

This is, admittedly, kind of an "out there" recommendation, but I highly recommend the film "Unconditional Love" with Kathy Bates and Rupert Everett. There is a lot of cheese, but I laughed by butt off at quite a few of the scenes.
from Amazon.com
Despite the success of My Best Friend's Wedding, Aussie director P.J. Hogan certainly hasn't gone Hollywood. Unconditional Love, co-written with his wife and fellow filmmaker Jocelyn Moorhouse, is a deeply eccentric concoction that ranges from campy comedy to murder mystery. If the whole thing doesn't really come off, it does have much that is funny, giddy, or simply weirder than all-get-out. Kathy Bates enjoys herself as a discarded wife who impulsively flies to England to attend the funeral of her idol, a beloved singer--Jonathan Pryce, in glorious sequined form. Meeting his "valet" (read: secret gay lover), Rupert Everett, she determines to find the dead man's murderer. It's hard to get the tone right on this kind of movie, but it's also easy to like a film that finds time for tributes to Barry Manilow (hey, Hogan rehabilitated ABBA in Muriel's Wedding) and the reassuring spirit of Julie Andrews. --Robert Horton

He went to the insurance company because she was freaking out about knowing that something was going to happen to him and it was making him nervous. That's all. Yeah, they movie was pretty ridiculous. The ending was gag-inducing. I guess they were trying to make the point that the past can be changed, much like the ending (if she hadn't had the premonitions, she wouldn't have been pregnant), so I guess that she really wasn't commited in "real life."

A few weeks ago, we rented Lonely Hearts (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0441774/) with John Travolta, James Gandolfini, Salma Hayek, and Jared Leto. It was just a random choice b/c it seemed like it would be good. It was very interesting and a bit bizarre in terms of the couple who did what they did for love. Here's a blurb:
Based on the true story, two homicide detectives track Martha Beck and Raymond Martinez Fernandez, a murderous pair known as the "Lonely Hearts Killers" who lured their victims through the personals.
We also watched Stranger Than Fiction (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420223/) with Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah. It was pretty good. I had no idea what it was about, so another random one for me. The storyline was quite interesting and it made you want to know what was going to happen. You had to watch it all the way to the end. DH got this for Christmas. It was hard for me to sit through the whole thing. I mean there were a few amusing parts but on a whole I didn't care for it. DH enjoyed it though.
It does not drag. The movie is held together by it's music. The music is spectacular - you can listen to some of the song on the movie website, the link is in my previous post.
The premise of the film is two people coming together through music, and falling in love by making music together. It's kind of hard to explain, but the result is extremely uplifting. There is such realism to the relationship of the girl and the guy, you can certainly feel the magic happening once the start playing together - The fact that they were able to capture such a moment on film is astounding. You can also see how much they love music and how much they like each other that it's infectious.
The story is very casual and simple, not to get in the way of the music - it has a fair balance of being a love story and a story about music.

Ocean's Thirteen ~ Really good. I don't think I have a favorite out of the three.
Pirate's 3 ~ Better than the second one but not as good as the first.
Rush Hour 3 ~ Just as funny as the first two!
License to Wed ~ Cute and funny. Nice for a light evening.
Knocked Up ~ I thought it was funny but used the f-bomb a little much for my taste
Hairspray ~ I really enjoyed this. I thought they did a great job and a good cast.
Simpson's Move ~ It was funny. It was pretty much one long episode.
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry ~ Hilarious. Love both Adam Sandler and Kevin James in this movie.

Two GREAT movies we rented this weekend:
Waitress - I LOVED this movie. I usually wouldn't like a storyline based around an affair, but this movie was SO good. Keri Russell was amazing in it.
and
Rescue Dawn - another with incredible acting, this time by Christian Bale (one of the best actors of his generation). This movie was so engrossing.

Just wanted to recommend a handful of great movies from 2007 that are currently on DVD. All of these are on my personal "Top 10 Movies of 2007" list:
Once (http://imdb.com/title/tt0907657/)
The story of two aspiring musicans who meet on the streets of Dublin and record a song together as romance begins to blossom. A totally unique, romantic, beautiful movie with the most gorgeous soundtrack in years. Don't miss it!
The King of Kong (http://imdb.com/title/tt0923752/)
Hilarious and totally surprising documentary about a middle-aged high school teacher who tries to break the world high score record in Donkey Kong. Little does he know there's already a champ out there who will stop at nothing to see his title stand.
Zodiac (http://imdb.com/title/tt0443706/)
Awesome and suspenseful film about police investigators in San Francisco trying to crack the case of the serial killer known as the Zodiac.
The Wind That Shakes the Barley (http://imdb.com/title/tt0460989/)
Starring Cillian Murphy, a powerful and emotional story about two brothers in 1920s Ireland who are torn apart by civil war that grips the country following its emancipation from England.
Ratatouille (http://imdb.com/title/tt0382932/)
A rat in Paris aspires to be a gourmet chef. Maybe Pixar's best animated film to date? Charming, beautifully animated, with an engaging and heartwarming story.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was a good story involving the Russian mafia. Viggo Mortensen was fantastic...especially in the naked fight. That was aces. ;)

I just rented:
Eastern Promises-It was pretty good. I was quite taken aback at first by the, ummm, blood. I guess that's all I'll say. The naked fight scene was something else. Whew!! Viggo Mortenson was great in this film. I wasn't sure about the ending. DH said it ended just as it should have. Oh well.....
Shoot 'Em Up-I love Clive Owen in anything and this film was a true shoot em up, bang bang. I think 100 people were killed in this film....seriously. Paul Giamatti was really good in this too. I was on the edge of my seat watching a couple of scenes.
The Namesake-I was expecting it to be as good as Monsoon Wedding, but it wasn't. I mean it wasn't bad, but it was just okay. I did particuarly enjoy seeing how the mother got along in her new country, the U.S., and how much of a lonely transition it was for her. It made me think of my students. But it took a long time to get to the "point" and then when it did, it was just so-so.

When I was on my cruise in December, we saw Waitress, and I loved it. I didn't have any intentions of watching it, but it was on in the room everyday, so I decided to give it a go. So glad I did.

Arlington Road was probably the best rental I ever saw. The ending has you out of your seat, almost like The Sixth Sense.I still get a little annoyed every time someone mentioned the big surprise ending in The Sixth Sense because it reminds me that someone (accidentally) told me the ending before I saw the movie! The day my co-worker and I were going to see it, another of our co-workers heard us talking about it & thought we'd already seen it so she said something like "OMG, weren't you totally shocked that (in white in case there is actually someone out there who doesn't know this by now) Bruce Willis' character was dead?!?!?" She felt really bad when she realized we hadn't seen it yet & she had ruined the ending for us. :p Oh well - I spent the entire movie being impressed at how creative they were in the way they hid the big secret up until the end.
Anyway - I haven't seen Arlington Road - maybe I'll go add it to my Netflix queue!

I was underwhelmed. Waitress is one of those movies that you might watch on a night where there isn't anything else on cable, so you watch it and think it's a cute movie. There really wasn't anything dynamic about it. Keri Russell did a good job, but I don't think it was an Oscar-worthy performance like the many other who feel that she was snubbed.

We watched Fast Food Nation the other night. It was okay. I haven't read the book, but from what I saw, I think they had a hard time translating the feeling of the book into the movie.
It was also really weird to see every single character (practically) drink Fat Tire Beer throughout the movie. It was almost like there was this strange product placement with New Belgium or something.

Our movie viewing has picked up somewhat, finally!
Spiderman 3 I know many people said this one was the worst of the franchise, but we really enjoyed it.
Shrek 3 Very cute, but the first two were better. I did like the baby ogres at the end. :)
1408 Very, very intense. I did get a bit confused towards the ending though. They did a good job adapting the screenplay from the book, which is always difficult with a King story.
28 Weeks Later AWESOME! It moved very quickly, always kept us guessing and a great story to boot. It was much gorier than the first one, IMO, but DH insists the first one was just as gory, which I don't remember being the case. Anyway, definitely worth watching more than once!
Halloween Rob Zombie's interpretation (not a re-make!) of this classic is just in a word; phenomenal. DH and I were riveted to our couch through the whole thing. Scary, intense, highly bloody and very emotional. The casting of the young Michael Myers was nothing short of brilliant, he scared the crap out of us! For those put off by violence, don't watch this one. The kill scenes were some of the most intensely bloody ones I've seen in a long time in a horror movie.
Wild Hogs We laughed all the way through this one! Loved it! And a nice change from some of the darker films we've seen recently. :o

We saw Eastern promises last weekend and I have to say I didn't like it. Viggo was great, but I felt like there ws so much unsaid in the plot and it was just too gratuitiously bloody for me. But I also despise Naomi Watts so maybe that's why I didn't like it?
We saw The Flying Scottsman a few weeks ago and loved it. It's based on a true story about a cyclist who sort of changed the way professional cycling developed. I'm a sucker for a true story, but it was also sorta funny and Johnny Lee Miller was awesome, as was the cute little hobbit guy (not the one who went onto LOST but the other one)

We rented Reefer Madness yesterday. I'd seen bits and pieces. It's pretty funny. I dig the propaganda. Weed is more deadly than heroin!
Stardust - Cute movie. I liked it better than I thought I would.
This is England - This is a film by Shane Meadows (He did another film called "Dead Man's Shoes" that I recommend) set in England in 1983, around the time of the Falklands War. It's about a boy named Shaun, who loses his father during the war and has a bad attitude at school. The boy eventually starts a friendship with some skinheads that leads him down a troubled path.
This is a film about patriotism and emotion. How when you lose someone close to you, you want a sense of belonging..and it shows how that vulnerability can manifest itself. Stephen Graham ("Snatch") played lead ex-con skinhead named Combo, who takes Shaun under his wing - and let me tell you, he's frightening!
Anyway, I think Shane Meadows is showing brilliance as an screenwriter/director. I look forward to his next film.

jimmysgirl424, so Rob Zombie's Halloween isn't a remake? I thought it was, and that's why I didn't want to see it.
I just saw 1408 and Spiderman 3. 1408 was pretty good, with a lot of surprises and twists. Spiderman 3 I didn't much care for. I just thought there were too many characters and too much going on to make for a really cohesive story.

I did not consider it a re-make per se, more a re-telling of the story if that makes any sense. Rob Zombie chose to focus much more of the story on Michael's childhood and some of the stuff he did leading up to his being institutionalized. And he also spent alot more time covering what happened to Michael once he was put away. The kid that played him was a genius and scared me way more than the grown-up Michael. Some elements of the story did in fact remain the same, but to me it was a whole new story with some fascinating twists. Just a note here...Michael's first [human] kill in the movie was profoundly disturbing. I don't want to say more should you decide to see it.

We've been on a horror movie kick recently.
Grindhouse-Planet Terror Robert Rodriguez tried WAY too hard to make this a "B" movie. It was ridiculously over-the-top gory. I mean, it had its moments, but for the most part it was just too darn cheesey for its own good. We look foward to seeing the second installment that Tarantino did. Hopefully it will be better than this mess was.
Resident Evil 3 Ultimately predictable but still fun to watch if you like zombie movies. But it just didn't compare to the first or even second parts of the triology.
The Hills Have Eyes 2 Cover your eyes if you aren't good with bloody kill scenes, cause this movie has got them in spades. I had to cover my eyes a number of times and I'm pretty jaded when it comes to that kind of stuff. Pretty good story too.

Completely agree with this review. That one was such a snore. My husband said the one woman won an Oscar for her role? I was shocked, it didn't even seem like she did much. I probably wouldn't recommend this one unless you are a HUGE Clooney fan who can be amused just by staring at his face for 2 hours regardless of content. :)

The only movies I've rented recently I rented when my DH was out of town and nothing was on TV. So I had myself a bit of a chick-flickathon. I watched:
Once - I know some people on here didn't like this one and others loved it, I absolutely adored it. And the music was fantastic.
The Jane Austen Book Club - This movie was way more fun than I was expecting - I wasn't all that impressed by the book, but the movie was pretty good.
Becoming Jane - Can I just say how much I LOVE Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy. This movie was enjoyable simply because of them.
Evening - this was a sleeper for me, I could only get half into it and had a hard time caring about the characters.
and I can't wait to see Into the Wild - maybe this weekend when we are at my parents house.

I really liked Michael Clayton, too. It's slower on video than it is in the theatre-- I got a little antsy in the middle this time-- but the story comes full circle in a wonderful way. Very well written and acted. I'd definitely recommend it.
Other movies we've seen lately:
Notes on a Scandal- I think this one is worth seeing only for the performances. Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench are fantastic. The subject matter is icky (teacher/student romance) and the film wouldn't be super memorable if not for the acting.
The Darjeeling Limited- I love Wes Anderson (and if you haven't seen Rushmore, his best film IMO, you must put it on your rental list!!), but this movie didn't do it for me. The idea is really interesting, but I just didn't think the story went anywhere. I kept waiting for something to happen. Eh.
Three Days of the Condor- Rented because it's a classic I'd never seen. It's a Robert Redford spy/CIA drama circa 1975. I actually didn't think it was a very good movie, but certainly interesting from a historical perspective. It's so funny to watch a spy thriller where there are NO computers, GPS, cell phones, etc.-- all the technology that is so important in current spy movies (think Spy Game and the Bourne series-- and if you haven't seen those, they're fantastic).

I loved Across the Universe. Visually stunning. Very much told through the eyes of an artist.
I agree. DH is a huge beatles fan and was skeptical at first about the movie but ended up liking it a lot.
I saw The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford yesterday. The cinematography on this film is spectacular. The pace of the story was very slow and narrated to have a "book-like) feel. Each scene develops each character (notably Robert Ford and Jesse James), their motivations and their relationship to each other and this builds up the tension between them, finally culminating in the assassination of Jesse James by Robert Ford. Casey Affleck really turned in a great performance. Brad Pitt was channeling one of his former roles, Early Grayce in Kalifornia, in his portrayal of Jesse James. And of course there is a awesome Warren ellis/Nick Cave score! ;) Nick Cave even has a cameo as a singer toward the end of the film.
It is a good film, if you are patient enough to sit through a 2 1/2 hour, slow paced film. :)

I really enjoyed it. I'm a BIG fan of the original production musical with Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury, so I was a bit skeptical about this film, but it was a pretty faithful adaptation of the musical. Definitely one of the darker films that Tim Burton has done. I think I need to buy this DVD.
I missed seeing it in the theater because my mom was in the hospital at the time, so I'm glad that I've finally got my chance. :)

We watched "I Am Legend" over the weekend. It was really, really good. DH and I were impressed with Will Smith's ability to pretty much carry a movie all by himself with very little in the way of supporting actors. He spends alot of on-screen time alone and his performance was just captivating. We liked this movie enough to want to own it and watch it again.
ETA: Oh yeah, and from my standpoint I have to add that Will Smith looks particularly yummy in this movie...he really built up his chest and arms and there is one scene he does bare-chested that totally made my jaw hit the floor. :D

We watched No Country For Old Men today. I'll be honest, I was incredibly bored. I think it had potential, but it was just too long. There were some scenes that felt unnecessary or drawn out. Oh, and the ending sucked!
Javier Bardin gave a good performance, though. He was insanely creepy.

ITA. We rented this along with We Own The Night and I told DH to go ahead and watch I Am Legend because I figured I'd fall asleep and I wasn't really interested in watching it. But I got hooked and ended up enjoying it.
As far as We Own The Night...it was okay. I mean the movie was good, it just seemed a little too "tidy" at the end for me.

We rented Sweeney Todd and did not care for it at all. It got a lot praise so perhaps we were expecting more but having never seen the play, we thought the music was terrible and I fell asleep in the middle of it.
We also rented Dan in Real Life, which was okay. The characters were all somewhat annoying which was too bad because I like many of the actors in the movie. To me, his daughters, except the youngest, were so annoying. Why must Hollywood portray children/teens in such a bad way? It makes me not want to have kids if its considered okay to disrespect your parents.
I did like Eastern Promises and thought Viggo Mortensen did a great job and the story was very good. So I highly recommend this one.

Finally, got around to seeing Into The Wild. I kept pushing it back because of the subject matter. I didn't think that I would enjoy a story about a young man that gave his life to live in the Alaskan wilderness.
I have to say that it was an outstanding film. Definitely Sean Penn's best directorial effort. "Into the Wild" was extremely poetic and gave you a glimpse into the mind of Christopher McCandless during his journey around America and his final, fatal journey into Alaska. The ending made me cry - big time - and I'm not a crier. It isn't a movie about whether the experience is right or wrong, idiotic or idealistic. It's about sharing that feeling to not conforming to the pressures of society, with connecting to nature. You know that McCandless views are a bit on the reckless side, and you see that he finally realizes this too late. It's tragic, but very touching.

yby1~ You know, I could not agree more. I avoided watching it as well because I hadn't gotten around to reading the book yet but then realized I have about 50 books I want to read so it could be a while before I got around to it.
Anyway, like you said, very tragic but touching. I thought Emil Hirsch was excellent and gave such a compelling performance. I also loved the pace of the movie, it took time to draw the viewer in and explain in subtle ways what Chris was about.
So good, I highly recommend it.

We saw 30 Days of Night over the weekend. If you are into vampire horror movies, this one will definitely rate high on your list! DH and I could not get over how intense the movie was, and how gory it got at times. And the vampires were easily the scariest (and most evil) that I've seen to date in this type of movie. We will watch this one again for sure! The only thing that really surprised me was that Josh Hartnett starred in it; it was kind of an unusual casting, IMO. But then again, he does play the hero, so it did work.

jimmysgirl I finally got around to watching Halloween, and I have to say I didn't like it. I actually was only able to take about 20-30 min. of it before switching it off. It just wasn't plausible to me that Michael's family was so trashy yet still lived in the nice neighborhood, and the swearing and violence was just too much (especially the horrific scene in the asylum). I think I'll be passing on Rob Zombie movies from now on.

I'm sorry..I guess I should have warned you about the excessive swearing and violence. :( Is this the first movie you've seen made by Rob Zombie? He can be very extreme when it comes to that kind of stuff. I'm a big fan of his because he reminds me of Quentin Tarantino in a twisted sort of way,(Devils Rejects especially) but his style of film-making is most definitely not for everybody, thats for sure. I'm sorry you didn't like the movie though!

Well I expected the violence (although like I said, the scene with the two guards in the asylum was too much for me), and it's not that I was bothered by the swearing, it's just that much of it gets old and interferes with the dialog. I actually saw House of 1,000 Corpses on TV but didn't really like it, and found it to be disturbing and campy at the same time. Oh well, at least I know to stay away from his stuff in the future. :)

See Lars and The Real Girl. It's a movie starring a lonely guy with a sex doll so knowing nothing about the movie besides that, I expected some sophmoric forgettable commedy. Instead, I watched a very touching story about an emotionally scarred man, his delusion...treating the doll like a real woman...and his family and town rallying to his side, accomodating his delusion in an attempt to help him get past it.
I found out later that the movie's screenplay was oscar-nominated and the lead actor was SAG-nominated...both well-deserved nominations.
I saw Lars & The Real Girl when it was in theaters. I'm a fan of Ryan Gosling (I thought he was fantastic in Half Nelson, which I highly recommend), so I was looking forward to it. I highly recommend it as well. :)

See, Adaya, I *hated* The Other Boleyn Girl. Compared to the book, there was almost NO drama, and it lacked a lot of the sex appeal I was expecting. I'd been really excited to see it, but actually turned it off halfway through and attempted to reclaim my lost night.
I'm sad to say it did nothing for me (Eric Bana notwithstanding). The movie took major liberties with the book, and (IMO) not in a good way. Usually the movies add in EXTRANEOUS drama.
But I've got Charlie Wilson's War and Lars and the Real Girl to check out this weekend, so hopefully Netflix will be redeemed. ;)

eta: I just finished watching Cautiva. It's an instant film on Netflix. I really enjoyed this Argentine film because since my first trip to Argentina I've been very interested in "the disappeared". It was very interesting and quite intriguing to watch this film because I never thought about the children of those "disappeared" parents. For some reason at the end, I was so weepy. I don't know. I guess it just makes me sad. A caption at the end said that there are many children who are out there who have not been found. Only 74 to date have been found and reunited with their biological families.
Sorry, didn't mean to ramble. But this is a good foreign film if you are interested in this kinda stuff.

See, I didn't find much of it hard to digest at all and I really don't like much violence or anything. The boys were a little creepy but there were these long pauses where you were just sitting there like "ok, what's next". Towards the end, it even felt like the actors weren't into the movie.

They weren't into it, because they didn't care, but we, as viewers, are supposed to care. The film is a message about American audience's tolerance for violence in cinema. :) That if given an excuse, become become blood thirsty. If there is a distinct good and evil, we will accept and enjoy that certain violent outcomes can happen. We can even accept the bad guy's violence if given some general backstory. Funny Games just flirts at giving us these things: almost getting more information on Peter, Paul repeatedly breaking the 4th wall, The wife almost getting revenge, etc...

This is exactly what I thought. Having the same scene repeated 5+ times (although through different people's views) was so boring! I thought the movie was predictable in some instances. The cast was great (who doesn't like Matthew Fox??) but the movie could have been better if the same 15 minute scene wasn't repeated so much.

I loved it. It was a very meaningful coming of age story about a women growing up through such radical times in Tehran (fall of the Shah and rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini). You really got a sense of what Marjane was feeling and what your family was experiencing through such trying times. The animation and it's use of black/white with sparse color really drove the emotional impact for me. Highly recommended. Just an FYI, the movie is in French.

Anyone else having problems with their Netflix queue not loading?Mine comes up initially, but then when I try to click on something it freezes up and takes several seconds to refresh or something so that I can maneuver around the page. I thought it was because my queue is soooo long (seriously, I've got about 275 movies on there!) but maybe it's like that for everyone. :p
My queue loads up quickly and I have 400+ movies on there. Maybe they fixed the problem already. :)

A couple that I recently watched I wanted to post here..
Penelope Awe this movie was cute and since have this huge crush on James MacAvoy, I was in heaven :)
Under the same moon- I liked this movie and was into the storyline, has subtitles but I didn't mind. Loved the little boy, he was a great actor :)
Spiderwick Cronicles- Must admit I never saw a preview so when this movie started I had to turn it off and watch it after my 4 year old went to sleep. Too scary for her. It was ok, nothing too great.
The Kite Runner Loved the book, so I rented the movie and loved that too :)
Grace is Gone Tried watching it but ended up turning it off about 40 mins in.
Things we lost in the fire Again I hadn't see an preview so I wasn't sure what this was about. It kept my interest but I really didn't enjoy the movie. Benicio was yummy though.

I don't know if I mentioned it here but it was on HBO the other night and I was reminded again how I really liked Little Children with Kate Winslet. It's funny, odd, freaky...I don't know but both DH and I got sucked into it.

I know it has been mentioned already, but I finally watched The Other Boleyn Girl yesterday and I really LOVED the movie. I haven't read the book so the movie didn't spoil anything for me.
However, after reading previous posts about the book vs. the movie, I think I'll check out the book next.

License to Wed was dreadful. Skip this movie if you can.

I watched Becoming Jane the other night and really enjoyed it. In fact, I think I need to rent more period romance movies. Historically a huge guess, but I really enjoyed it.

meatpie if you want to watch a good historical romance, I'd check out BBC's most recent Jane Eyre (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780362/). Very good!

I watched the whole thing, although I'm not quite sure why. I thought it had potential to be good but it was really boring.
Cloverfield - We watched about 10 minutes and turned it off. The camera angles didn't make me sick but they annoyed the crap out of me. I could not tolerate looking at the whirling and zipping around.

Such a wonderful recommendation! I forgot about BBC - must get TiVo remote now!

Have you already seen it? Actually I haven't seen it in awhile and I could definitely use a dose of handsome men in breeches ;) It is out on DVD so I'm sure it's something you could rent somewhere if you haven't seen it.
Also, not quite as gothic but if you haven't seen A Room With A View, I think that's a sweet romantic story. I like the 86 or 87 version with Helena Bonham Carter as Lucy.

Watched Definitely, Maybe today. Way too long. The story was cute, the ending was cute, but it took too long to get there.

We rented Definitely, Maybe this weekend and we were probably going to watch it tonight. Good to know it's long...glad to hear it's cute though.

This is one of my favorite movies ever :).
I liked Definitely, Maybe. Nothing special, but it was cute.
I have Becoming Jane in the DVD player (just have to stop watching cooking and house shows and baseball), and Rendition is next.

Not sure if this movie has already been mentioned, but Lars and the Real Girl is cute. Kind of slow and strange, but I liked it.

Ditto Taffers. I just watched Lars and the Real Girl last weekend. I really liked it. It's definitely unusual, but I found it very compelling and emotional at times (not in a sad way- just moving). Would recommend it!

I liked, probably because I got to pretend there was a White House-bound Clinton. Just watched There Will Be Blood, which was great.

Shutter - not as good as the Ring, not as bad as the Grudge.

Finally watched The Other Boleyn Girl. I thought it was pretty interesting. Since the book's always better than the movie, I'm going to read the book now.

The Darjeeling Limited - I guess I really had nothing to do on Saturday so I forced myself to finish the movie. 3 words: not worth it.
3:10 to Yuma - I really enjoyed this one.
I should post this in foreign films, but since it's also a rental...

It's a pretty powerful movie about two female college students trying to arrange an illegal abortion in communist Romania during the late 1980's. The acting, camera work, cinematography were outstanding and director Cristian Mungiu's minimalist style really added to the tension and angst felt in each scene.
If anyone wants to discuss it in the foreign films thread, let me know. :)

Yby: I'll put it on my queue in Netflix. Sounds great.
Recently watched The Kite Runner (never read the book) and I loved it. I really didn't love Little Miss Sunshine. It was fine, but not nearly as good as I had hoped. My initial reaction was indie-version of National Lampoon's Vacation. Eh, whatchagonnado. Different strokes.
I'm lovin' having a Netflix subscription and can I just say I got an $18 rebate by signing up through ebates? Very cool.

I have a Netflix question, and rather than starting a whole new thread, I thought I would ask it in here first.
My next DVD (part of a tv show series) is said to have a "long wait". I looked up their definition of "long wait", and it says less than 14 days. It has been longer than that, and I'm starting to go through withdraw! What has been your experience with the wait times with Netflix?
