ET has learned that EDDIE MURPHY and his wife, NICOLE, are divorcing after 12 years. Nicole filed the petition for divorce Friday morning in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences.

Murphy released the following statement to ET: "The welfare of our children is our main concern and their best interest is our first priority." The couple has four daughters and one son.

News of the split has stunned many in Hollywood, as DONALD TRUMP told ET exclusively: "I feel very badly for both of them. They're both wonderful people and I wish both of them well."

Actress SHERYL LEE RALPH, who attended the couples' 1993 wedding, said she was "shocked." "I'm so deeply sorry for the two of them, but especially for the children because in divorce no one hurts as much as the children. And it's in small ways that you sometimes just don't see ... I'm praying for all of them and I'm so sorry because I remember their wedding day and all of the beauty and care that went into that day."

Signed to "Saturday Night Live" when he was just 19 years old, the now 44-year-old actor is known for hits like 'Beverly Hills Cop,' 'The Nutty Professor,' 'Dr. Dolittle' and more recently as the voice of Donkey in the 'Shrek' films.

What a shame. :( I hope things go OK for their kids' sake.

Wow. I never expected these two to get divorced. They always looked so happy together and they're cute together, too!

This is just a shame. I always thought they were doing so well, 12 years, 5 kids. What a shocker!

I wonder, and of course, I'm a speculator, if this is because they moved from their quiet NJ to Hollywood?? I think I remember reading that not too long ago? I've always loved Eddie Murphy and his humor. I hope they don't go through with it, and they stay married, I hate to see a long time marriage break up. So sad.

I am sorry to hear about this because it seemed that they were beating the odds. 12 years for Hollywood is a long time :(

This is surprising but at the same time it nothing in Hollywood shocks me.

I was shocked to hear about this. They had been together for soooo long. I'm sure the kids are more hurt from this than either of them are.
