Becky, along the lines of what rachrich suggested. Why not just use your neighbor in the interim and pay her $125/week in cash. That way she'd still be getting her unemployment check and still make some extra money on the side. In the meantime that will give you more time to look for permanent daycare situation.
Beachgirl, I hope its just reflux too. Do you think its possible that its a newly developed allergy?! Like milk protien?
Sorry I can't reply to everyone. Pumping, scarfing down my lunch, and I've got a meeting in 12 minutes!

I have $30 worth of coupons for Nestle Good Start formula. They are only good at Food City grocery stores. I'm not sure if anyone has a Food City in their area, but if you're interested PM me and they are yours :D

rachrich and lolly- I must have forgotten to write that we are using her temporarily (at $125/week cash) until we can find other care. She is planning to find a job come October, so that's why it's not going to work out. It sucks for both of us, actually, because I thought I'd found a good solution and she thought she wasn't going to have to find a job. :( Now I'm back to square one. I have a headache.
Every time I go to feed her I get really nervous and I think she can sense that which probably makes things worse.
Beachgirl- I know it sounds hard but try your best to stay relaxed during feedings. She will sense your stress and feed off of it. I am a very "stressed" mom and I get tense when my kids have fits that I cannot fix or console them through, my DH is always telling me to relax because they can sense my stress.
Becky-Same thing, I know its hard but you need to take a deep breath and relax. You have a good short-term situation in place, so you have time to get on waiting lists or for a spot to become available. I know you really want an in-home care, but maybe you'll need to braoden your search to centers for a brief amount of time. You have that great website as a tool and you can find a center with no violations, that might help you be more comfotable. Have you looked at church daycares. My kids are at a daycare associated witha church and we love it. When I was daycare searching with #1, both of the places I really liked were part of churches.

Becky So sorry about your daycare situation:( I'm sure that it's really a blessing in disguise though, because you've found out your sitter was a real flake, before you had Maddie settled in there, and that the alternate childcare center was not a good place to send her. Hopefully you'll find a solution that suits you soon. I can only imagine how stressed you are feeling.
Beachgirl I am so sorry your DD is in such horrible pain. Hopefully it is reflux, rather than twisted intestines (that sounds awfully painful). I'll be thinking of you on Thursday and hope your test results come back quickly. ((HUGS))
Rach have owen's glasses come in yet? I thought he was supposed to get them this past Monday?
MrsS glad the sitting is going well. Must be a bit of a juggle with two the same age.
I put DD in her Jumping Joey for the first time yesterday (I think you guys call them jumperoo's or something?). She loved being upright (she weight bears on her legs really well, and has good head and neck control) and just sort of turned herself around in it looking around. DS was disappointed that she didn't start jumping - he kept demo'ing it for her and couldn't understand why she didn't start immediately jumping too:D
I've managed to get a head cold - ugh. and we are all stuck inside with the endless Winter we're having. I think DD is having a growth spurt - she is eating every few hours and woke really early in the night, which is unlike her, to nurse.

anemone oh yeah, the optical shop told us his glasses should have been in Monday. welp, DH called them Monday and they said the lab hadn't gotten the lenses yet so it would be Tues or Wed. DH called the optical shop again today and they said it will be Friday for sure (i'm not holding my breath) as the lab just has to cut the lenses into the frames or something. We are PO'd! this is taking forever and the shop keeps telling us this day or that day, and it hasn't happened yet. It's the lab's fault, not the optical shop, but we're still ticked. The poor boy needs his specs!

anemone- that's hilarious about the jumperoo...Nicholas has been in his bouncer this weeks some..he can't quite understand what it is, but likes to be independent and watch tv..go figure. When both are crying that's what's hard, but I just put them both on the loveseat with me and feed them (when Eli (almost 7 months) isn't eating baby food). Nicholas LOVES to watch Eli eat his babyfood, I've given Nicholas a bite of his own babyfood (my mom bought Nicholas some food since it was on sale when he's ready to eat) he likes to lick the spoon, but that's about it, his dr. said it was okay to start to get him used to a spoon. So far, only one meltdown, and that's Eli since he's teething, and I just put him down for a nap when he does that, since they said he'll put himself to sleep, and he will. Nicholas did not want to go down last night, but around 10:30 he finally fell asleep and thankfully slept all night long. I promise I will catch up on shout outs, I just can't go back and read and catch up right now..hope everyone is doing well..

Rachrich - I would be beyond PO'd! I hope they have them for you on Friday!!
Becky I'm sorry to hear about the daycare situation. I hope that in the coming month you can find a great solution to your problem. Hang in there!!!
I've put DS in the exersaucer for a couple of minutes each time, as he's not quite ready for it - but the look on his face is priceless. I can't wait until he can play in there for longer than a couple of minutes. His little coo's and sounds are so precious that I love hearing them & I think this will make him "talk" even more!

Rachrich -How annoying about the glasses. I really hope you get them soon.
Becky - So sorry you are going through such a frustrating time with the whole daycare situation. When things are tough for me I always like to think that things happen for a reason and work out for the best. I'm sure Maddie will end up in a place she loves and where you feel comfortable, but it sucks that you have to go through all this stress and frustration in the meantime.
Us - So we went for the barrium swallow test today. Hailey did great. She drank the liquid (which looked quite nasty) like a pro and held still on the x-ray table so we could watch it going down. The good news is she does not have malrotation which is the twisting of the intestines that would have required surgery. I am so relieved about that! The bad news is that as suspected, she does have severe reflux. As she was drinking, we saw the fluid going down her esophagus and into her stomach. After a few minutes of the liquid building up in her stomach, we saw it shoot right back up her esophagus all the way back up to her throat. The doctor said that it was significant reflux. Now we're just waiting for them to send over the report to our pediatrician's office to see what the next steps are. They will most likey put her on some type of anti acid medication and possibly switch her to a hypo allergic formula.
Mrs.Spencer - I remember you said Nicholas was having a lot of trouble with reflux in the beginning. Do you currently have him on medication? Also, what type of formula are giving him?
MrsSpencer
08-21-2008, 12:37 PM
beachgirl- He isn't on meds...he was put on cereal in his bottle to keep his food down and it helped (his was mild). His problem was he was allergic to dairy/soy, he's on Nutrimagen for that. He takes 5 oz, and gets 5 teaspoons of oatmeal cereal in his bottle. He is now a VERY happy baby, smiles all the time and I couldn't be more thankful. I'm glad Hailey did well and didn't have malrotation, but my brother had severe reflux, they didn't prescribe meds then (he's almost 24), he slept in a high chair for 8 months! I feed Nicholas upright, and burp frequently, his bed is at an angle...and all that helps. Good luck!

MrsSpencer: I have three cans of Nutramigen that the doctor gave us as samples. We never switched DD's formula from Similac. So they're just sitting in the kitchen. Would you be interested in me sending them to you? Free of charge :) They were free to me and I don't want to see them go to waste. I know formula is expensive....these are the smaller cans. If you want them, feel free to PM me your info/addy and I'll get them off to you this weekend sometime.
MrsSpencer

I would LOVE them...thanks soo much!...what similac is she on? I have a gently used LARGE can of the soy...I won't ever use it..wondering if anyone here needs it? I also have 2 full cans of enfamil ar if anyone needs it!

BeachGirl- my first had very bad reflux. We tried zantac and then prevacid. The prevacid stopped the paina nd thus the screaming, but did not stop the puking I hope you find something that works.
Cate seems to really have woken up in the past two weeks. It's amazing to watch her now interacting more and reaching for toys. I made some nectarine puree last week and froze it. The nectarines were so good and I just couldn't eat them fast enough, so I thought I'd get a jump start on baby food making. I can't wait until Cate is ready for solids.

Beachgirl I'm so glad it isn't malrotation. If you do a search on "reflux" in thread titles, you'll find a heap of information from others (from formula to sleep positions) but here is a link to the reflux meds thread (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9179&highlight=reflux) so you might find some info there that is useful.
MrsS glad your day is going well with two. Sounds like you're pretty busy though:)
sophonisba9 Nectarines. Yum! I can't wait for Summer here. Maybe I should do the same with the overripe pears that I have in my fruit bowl. They won't be in season when we start solids. I was going to make a sponge top pudding for us tonight, but I'm not sure I need the pudding KWIM:rolleyes: How are the milk blisters going? That sounded so painful.
Rach Boo about the glasses:mad: You must be feeling pretty frustrated about that. Owen's weight gain was great too!
Just a quick round of SO's. We finally have a sunny morning here, but I'm not sure how long it will last, so we're going to get out to the park before it starts raining/ sleeting again after I've nursed DD. DS was cooped up all day yesterday (It rained from 8am through to 5pm without stopping).

So we heard back from the doctor. We're starting Hailey on prevacid and also switching her to Nutramigen formula. I can't believe how expensive this formula is! If anyone has any extra Enfamil coupons they aren't using, I'd really appreciate it if you could send them my way. She can't tolerate the powder so we have to use the ready to feed which is even more expensive. Right now it's going to cost us almost $300 a month in formula! I'm going to see if my insurance company will cover it, but I've heard it very hard to get them to do that.
MrsSpencer
08-22-2008, 05:10 AM
His doctor is providing me with every sample she has in her office, since they know how expensive it is, and most babies aren't on it. Can she handle concentrate? It's like ready to feed but mix with water? It's a shot, I have some cans I can give you (I get powder and that kind for him). I get free ones all the time from his dr (granted it's needed but I can spare a few cans of the concentrate). I have two enfamil coupons for five dollars off you can have, since I've only bought two cans of formula so far (dh's aunt is friends with the enfamil lady that brings the samples to his dr.'s office where she's a nurse). She gives me cases of it everytime I see her, or gives it to mil..so if I get any ready to feed I'll send it your way..or if you find she can handle the concentrate..which isn't much different in my opinion, I'll send you a few cans everytime. I wish she could handle the powder as I'd have pgirl send it to you!
Babylust...I'll try the insurance thing come October, they are going to see if he's "outgrown" the allergy and try him on regular formula, if it's a no go I'll talk to the insurance..since I do have BCBS! Thanks.

Beachgirl that's great that Hailey doesn't have the malrotation. And it's good you and your dr. have a plan. I hope the combo of new formula and meds helps! If I ever get any Enfamil coupons, I'll send them your way. I rarely get them, but I always seem to get Similac, which now I know to send to pgirl;)
It's 9:30 here and the optical shop opens at 9. I'll give them a call around 11 if I haven't heard from them. They told me their shipments arrive in the morning. I will be BEYOND PO'D if they're still not in.

rachrich- Yippee! Please post a pic when you get home! I bet you are beyond excited for your little guy to see!!!
BeachGirl- Good luck getting the insurance company to cover the cost (or at least some of the cost) of the formula. I'm so glad to hear she won't require surgery, though. :)
If you haven't seen the thread I started in Infants & Babies, we found daycare. It's crazy expensive, but I know she'll be safe there. She starts Sept. 2, and my mom is going to be with us again next week. And honestly, now that we'll be paying $100 more a week than we would have been paying the in-home sitter, my paycheck won't go as far as it would have. The new daycare center is the only one around that accepts PT infants. I'm hoping this will be my tool to help convince DH that I should just work PT. The Lord works in mysterious ways, and maybe this was his way of working that out. I sure hope so.

Rach - I know everyone else has told you this, but I have to definitely agree that Owen is SO ADORABLE in his glasses. I'm so happy he finally got them and that he can now see the world. I can't wait to hear all of your stories about how he reacts to all the new things he finally gets to see! I know you and your family have been through so much, so I think now is going to be the start of great things to come for you guys. :)
Becky - I'm so glad you found a good daycare. Even though you said it's a little more than you wanted to pay, I think it's worth it knowing that Maddie will be in terrific hands and you can relax. To me that is worth any price. She's going to have so much fun there playing with all the other babies!
Mrs. Spencer - I'm not sure if she would be able to handle the concentrate. I'll check with the doctor and see what they say. I'd love it if you could send me those two enfamil coupons you have. I'll PM you my address. Thanks so much! :) I really appreciate that.
Lolly - Thanks for checking through your coupons for me. Let me know if you find any Enfamil ones. With the price of this formula, every coupon helps!
Us - Today was a very tough day. I don't know if Hailey is just having some stomach issues as a result of the barrium she had to drink for the test yesterday, or if it's the new formula we switched to. She just would barely eat anything today. I was so stressed out. I had a physical today which takes about an hour. I didn't want to have Hailey sitting in a doctor's office that long, so my mom met me there and took her for a walk in the stroller outside while I was with the doctor. Then when I finished it was time to feed her, and it took an hour to get her to barely do 2 ounces. She kept pulling away and crying, arching her back and pushing the bottle away with her tounge. I also cannot get her to burp on this formula. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
To make matters worse, my mom kept telling me that I wasn't burping her right and that I should be patting her back higher and doing it over my shoulder instead of on my lap. I've been burping her the same way for 3 months now and have never had any problems. Then my mom said she can probably sense that I was frustrated and to let her try feeding Hailey to see if she could get her to eat. I know my mom was only trying to help, but at that moment I did not need someone telling me how to burp my baby, and it felt like she was insinuating that it was my fault she wasn't eating because I was stressed. I snapped at my mom and told her to leave if she was going to tell me what to do with my daughter.
I never got her to eat more than 2 ounces for that feeding, and the rest of the day's feedings weren't much better. I'm so stressed out. I'm worried that she is not going to gain weight if she contines at this rate. :( I heard that the prevacid can take up to a week to start working, so I hope it starts to kick in and we see some improvement soon.
I also called my insurance company today, and they will not cover the formula. :( They said I can write an appeal and send a letter from my doctor, but it doesn't sound too promising.
MrsSpencer
08-23-2008, 08:32 AM
Sorry about the insurance Beachgirl...Nicholas is still hard to burp on this formula also..but it doesn't seem to bother him too much. I actually had to put him on my shoulder (also how I was NOT burping him before), to get a burp out once he started on this formula. My dr. told me when we were thinking of having to do the barium test (if the formula didn't help), that it causes stomach upset, and constipation..so more than likely it's that stuff working through her system..my mom yelled at me for burping him on my shoulder..go figure. He went through a smililar pattern of not eating much...I guess it's their bodies getting used to the new stuff..it should work itself out. If she is still fussy by the end of next week, I'd take her back in..she may need to either up the dosage or get a different med all together. Hang in there..hope it gets better soon.

BeachGirl- Sorry about your bad day and your mom. I started burping Maddie over my shoulder when she was about 3 months. I don't want to say your mom was right, but maybe it's worth a shot? I hope things turn around for you guys soon.

rach- Just out of curiosity, what is his prognosis? Will there be more surgeries in the future? Will he always have to wear glasses, or will he be able to switch to contacts once he's a bit older? I hope he tolerates the glasses well. I'm sure he'll get used to them!
becky I guess the best answer I can give for a prognosis is that he will always have to have some type of corrective wear, whether it be glasses, contacts (which the dr. said we can consider around 4th or 5th grade), or an intraocular lens where they surgically put in a new lens. The intraocular lens won't be put in until he's 18 or 19, when his eye has finished learning how to focus and process images. So until then, his glasses are his lenses. He has no lens in either eye at all, which is weird to think about. A cataract simply is a clouded lens, so they just removed it. The only future surgeries would be when when we decide to have the intraocular lens put in.
I tell you what, I have learned more about the human eye in the past month than I've ever known! People are amazed when they ask about him and I explain things about how the lens works, etc. Some have asked, well if he he doesn't have a lens isn't he blind? (I probably would've thought that had I not known) No, he's not blind, he can see, everything is just VERY blurry because the lens is what focuses images, the retina has more to do with actual seeing.
sorry for the long-winded answer, but it's very interesting stuff:)
ETA: thought i'd share....i was holding Owen at church last week and an elderly lady comes up to me and says "Is this the baby with the problem?" I said, well he had cataracts removed. It was just weird (and kinda rude) that she said he had a "problem"

rachrich - He is such a cutie-patootie in those glasses! I think he looks handsome and charming. And he can see you so crystal clear now, that has to be amazing!
I took DS to his 4 month WBV and he was 13lbs 13oz so he's only up 1 pound from his 2 month visit. I expected this since my supply has dwindled since I've gone back to work. Twice daycare has called me to come pick him up (or nurse, or provide more milk) at 2PM because he's raced through what I provided that morning. Many times I know they were able to space out his feedings so that when I get there at 5:15 he is raring to go for another feeding. I'll be providing a backup formula this week so they can dip into that if he needs more. I made it past the 4 month mark though!
Nothing more new here! Yay for the weekend...

Thanks, yes it is so stressful! I have the "formula-guilt" right now, but the guilt that is weighing heavier and matters most is that he wasn't getting enough milk from me. So supplementing with formula is a must and I'll still continue to pump whatever I can!
Not that there is anything wrong with formula, ladies! Ughh, the guilt...left and right. I supplemented with DD as well, it just seemed like I made it further down the road before I introduced it.

smilewithme easier said than done, i know, but try not to feel guilty! We all do our best for our DC's. I think it's commendable that you went 4 months w/out formula. Even though Owen's had formula since day 1, the big majority of his diet has been BM, and I'm so proud of myself that I'm still going w/ BFing when I didn't even make it 2 weeks with my DD. You're doing great mamma ;)

Rach Owen looks so adorable in his glasses! Has he smiled at you yet? I can't believe that woman at your church:eek: honestly, some people have no tact, or idea for that matter!
Becky I read your other thread and I'm glad you've found good daycare. Honestly, while it would be nice to have cheaper daycare, you only get one shot with your child, so quality of care is really important. I'm sure Maddie will be really stimulated, loved and cared for where you have chosen, and you'll get a lot of comfort from that.
Beachgirl I'm so sorry you had a rough day with Hailey. If she couldn't get any burps up, maybe it wasn't gas but the reflux that was causing her discomfort? I burp DD on my shoulder. I read somewhere that if you hold them quite high up your shoulder it helps sort of force the air out. She certainly burps better up high. Still, I know that no one can push your buttons like your mom when you're having a bad day.....I hope Hailey gets better soon.
Us DD continues being very gassy - I'm considering cutting out Dairy and Soy. I have a slight dairy intolerance (I have very mild eczema, and it tends to make it worse), so it wouldn't be surprising if it is contributing to her gassiness. The gripe water helps, but nursing her is hard work, due to her fussing (which is a nice way of saying periodic screaming:p). I'm also thinking about stopping taking the mini pill that I'm on. I once (years ago) took a low dose (normal) pill and it made me feel quite depressed, and I've been feeling quite flat for the past few weeks, so it could be the pill. One of my friends had a similar reaction on the same pill, so it's not uncommon. I wasn't on it last time for long enough to notice, so I'm not sure if it is the source of my lack of enthusiasm for things, but I have a hunch it is.

My neighbor's little girl (born same day as Maddie) does the same thing. I witnessed it yesterday. It's really amazing to see the differences the two girls have, even though they are the exact same age. For instance, Keirra (pronounced like Keira Knightley) "walks," and rolls all over the place and pushes up on her elbows. Maddie doesn't do any of those things, but she grabs at objects with both hands at the same time (two different objects in each hand, even), she smiles and giggles a lot (Keirra doesn't really do either) and she takes her paci out of her mouth and puts in back in. I know there are other things one does that the other doesn't, but I can't think of them right now. Anyway, it really is a testament to how all babies develop differently! I think Maddie is much more advanced with her fine motor skills, and Keirra's large (gross) motor development is more advanced than Maddie's. Kinda neat to observe!
Oh, regarding the thread ... I have some downtime at work today, so I'm going to start working on it. But I'll PM you the password so you can help out in the future! Thanks for the offer. :)
