in the past week, there were 4 messages on our answering machine from collecting agencies calling for someone else. i think the calls were from 2 different sources, as three of them were from those automated recorded/computerized voices, and one was from a human call. we couldn't quite figure out the name(s) they were calling for, but it didn't sound like my or DH's name, and we had no reason to have any collecting agency calling either of us. the actual person who called had an accent has well so it was difficult to understand who they were looking for, and the computerized voice just sound robotic.

i don't want the collecting agency just to show up one day and take our stuff because they thought we're avoiding their calls!

would you call them up to tell them they have the wrong number?! i still have 2 of the messages saved (one computerized and the human one), we deleted the other ones because we thought it was just a wrong call...

have you encountered anything like so? what did you do?

thanks for your help!

There are a couple other threads on this--you're not the only one in that boat!

This is the most recent one, from just last month:

Collection agency calls for someone else - anything I can do? (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40846)

As for your question, I answered in in the previous threads, but yes I'd call the companies back and tell them they have the wrong number. They're not going to show up at your house, that's not how it works.

You're not in danger of this. If you don't owe anything then you have nothing to worry about. Believe me, repo agencies take extra special care that they are taking the right property. They are not going to go after your stuff based on a phone number ( if they do you have a great lawsuit on your hands!)

This has happened to us a couple of time. I have answered the phone and made calls to inform collection agencies that they have the wrong number. If you tell them to stop calling then by law they are obligated to do so. It's worth it because those calls can be so freaking annoying.

I've had this happen too. I just phoned the 800 number they gave in the message and asked why they kept phoning my number, it was a collections agency looking for someone who was not me. They took me off their list and I haven't heard from them since.
