Lame or Romantic?
IMO, I think it's lame and pointless  I could think of 10 million other things to do besides spending money on a star.
What's that all about?! If DH came home with that gift I would be grateful and act all sappy but in the back of my mind I would be pretty damn upset  Sorry but i'm way too frugal and I have a child. I see no practicality in purchasing a star what so ever. Maybe when I was a kid or a teenager it would have been cute. But now? Not so much!
I surfed the net just to see how much people spend on a star and it's between $20.00 - $500.00  WTF!?

My parents actually printed the info off the internet and made fake certificates one year as a gag Christmas gift...my sister and I opened it and were both like, "Ummm, okay, ummm....thanks?" Ha! We werent sure if it was for real. I think it is silly and a waste of money. I'd much rather have someone donate $ to a charity than buy me a star with a certificate. Someone is making a lot of money off of a printed certificate

I think this is one of those things you'd get for the "person that has everything". Kind of frivolous, but something different.
That money could be used for any other number of things, like feeding the homeless. But then so could the $12 I spend on a Starbucks coffee cup, just because they are cute!
To each his own, if my DH bought me a star I'd be upset (pissed), because he knows how materialistic I am and how I need "things", but if he did it in a romantic way, along with other things, then I'd be ok with it! :p

Well I bought one for my DH on our first (dating) anniversary. I thought it was sweet & he appreciated it :)

I think it's silly, verging on a scam. Who owns the stars, anyway? How can I be sure that someone else didn't already buy that star? What if my star burns out? That would be sad! :p

Actually, hate to be the bearer of bad news but it is a scam:
"Only the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has the right to officially name celestial objects. It does so for scientific purposes only and does not recognize any commercial naming systems. The IAU, viewed by astronomers as the reputable governing body, is well aware of the sea of commercial star vendors. The IAU dissociates itself entirely from the commercial practice of 'selling' fictitious star names."

I consider it to be a silly waste of money. I would rather have that money spent on something useful.

Stupid, and a waste of money. You haven't really named the star; all you did was pay for a piece of paper. An expensive piece of paper.

I think it's cute, but I'd never buy a star, nor would I want one bought for me.

I said other because I think it is AWESOME!
Of course, that's because I always thought stars should be named by the folks who discovered them or had something to do with it... but man if I got a star named after me, I'd be SO STOKED!

Huh. Well, I guess you DO have to have something to do with finding the star (and proving that with the IAU) to get a star legitimately named after you.
Still want one named after me though, lol.
