This is a sad one... I am in the process of making a memorial video for parents of a young girl that was killed in a car accident.
I am looking for ideas of songs to use on the video montage but I want to stay away from Sarah Mclachlan songs. She passed away at age 17 so I want to find something suitable
So far I am thinking of...
- Somewhere over the Rainbow by Katherine McPhee
Any additional suggestions?

"Tears in Heaven" always gets me. We were at a wedding and it was played during the cocktail hour and I had to leave the room, crying silently, with the baby.

My first question would be...are these religious people? Are they not a fan of any type of music?
That being said, here are a few of my suggestions:
George Strait - You'll be there
Sara Evans - No place that far
Martina McBride - In my daughters eyes
Jordan Hill - Remember me this way
Mariah Carey - One sweet day
Faith Hill - There you'll be
Faith Hill - Fireflies
Ana Laura - Completely

Michelle Featherstone - Sweet, sweet, baby

That is so sad...and lots of hard choices. Here are a couple ideas:
There's an obscure girl band called Late Tuesday...they have a song called "Home" that would be perfect for pictures of her when she's small. "103 and Other Things" is another of their songs that is beautiful and bittersweet, but only appropriate if the family believes in God. All of their songs are available on iTunes.
Lifehouse - "From Where You Are" or "Broken"
Mariah Carey - "One Sweet Day" (I know this is probably as overused as Sarah McLachlan)
Paolo Nuntini - "Autumn Leaves"
Rosie Thomas - "It Don't Matter to the Sun"
The Samples - "As Tears Fall"
Seal - "Don't Cry"

I'm so glad I could help...that's a very tough, bittersweet job you've taken on. Were you close with the family?

Louie Armstrong What a Wonderful World? You could do it from when she was born, and happy times.

Not sure if they are religious, but this one is one of my favorites. We played at our daughter's funeral is: MercyMe - Homesick:
You’re in a better place, I’ve heard a thousand times
And at least a thousand times I’ve rejoiced for you
But the reason why I’m broken the reason why I cry
Is how long must I wait to be with you
I close my eyes and I see your face
If home’s where my heart is then I’m out of place
Lord won’t you give me strength to make it through somehow
I‘ve never been more homesick than now
Help me Lord because I don’t understand Your ways
The reason why I wonder if I’ll ever know
But even if You showed me the hurt would be the same
Because I’m still here so far away from home
Chorus
In Christ there are no goodbyes
In Christ there is no end
So I’ll hold onto Jesus with all that I have
To see you again
There is another one that I associate with my dad as well, can't recall it right now, my mind is drawing a blank on it, will post it if I find it again

Not a lot of people are aware of this but Fleetwood Mac's "Gypsy" was written for Stevie Nick's best friend who died at an early age. Once I found that out I thought it was such a sweet, poetic song with more of hopeful feel to it as apposed to it being so sad.
Lyrics:
So Im back, to the velvet underground
Back to the floor, that I love
To a room with some lace and paper flowers
Back to the gypsy that I was
To the gypsy... that I was
And it all comes down to you
Well, you know that it does
Well, lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice
Ah, and it lights up the night
And you see your gypsy
You see your gypsy
To the gypsy that remains faces freedom with a little fear
I have no fear, I have only love
And if I was a child
And the child was enough
Enough for me to love
Enough to love
She is dancing away from me now
She was just a wish
She was just a wish
And a memory is all that is left for you now
You see your gypsy
You see your gypsy
Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes down to you
I still see your bright eyes, bright eyes
And it all comes down to you
I still see your bright eyes, bright eyes
And it all comes down to you
I still see your bright eyes, bright eyes
(she was just a wish)
(she was just a wish)
And it all comes down to you
Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes down to you

Are they religious? I've always loved the song "With Hope" by Steven Curtis Chapman. He actually wrote it for a friend whose child was killed in an accident.
Here are the lyrics. (http://www.christianlyricsonline.com/artists/steven-curtis-chapman/with-hope.html)
Maybe you could find out who her favorite bands were or something. That could give it a nice, personal touch.

I did a memorial DVD in November when our family lost a child.
I used -
You're So Amazing - Janelle
Tears In Heaven - Clapton
My Little Girl - Tim McGraw(?) - it was from the "Flicka" soundtrack
Sweet Sweet Baby - don't know the artist

What a sad, but noble project to be working on.
The Lifehouse songs are good. I also suggest 'Far Away' by Nickelback. I like that these songs seem more 'teen like' and fitting for a such a young woman.
Good luck with your project - I'm sure it will be beautiful.

Thank you to all of those that took the time to contribute!! You have no idea how much it helped.
I ended up using Ribbit's suggestion... (thanks again Ribbit)
Lifehouse "Where you Are"
Katharine McPhee "Somewhere over the rainbow"
It was a beautiful tribute that was played at a memorial service on monday.
If the family decides to post the video on a website I will post the link if anyone is interested.
