This last Saturday we found maggots in our laundry room. We cleaned out as many as we could and never saw 'em again. Today I noticed ten flies in our house, very random. And just now I saw a cockroach about half the size of a deck of cards walking across our floor. YUCK

What the heck is going on? We thought maybe there was a dead mouse or something in the laundry room but we found nothing when we searched last weekend.

I'm afraid of what I might find when DH isn't here to take care of it, or worse yet, what DS might find with his curious little hands.

ETA: We've been in this house almost five years and the worse we've had is ants and a few spiders.

You had actual maggots in your house? EEWWW, now i have the hebee jebees! I can relate to bug problems. We have carpet beetles that start out as disgusting little wormy larvae that eat through the clothes in my closet/dust/other dead insects, etc... before becoming little flying beetles that lay more eggs and the disgusting little wormy things start all over again. I've had the house treated 3 times and i'm calling to have it done again! Makes me sick to my stomach!

This might explain your sudden fly problem:
wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggot)

A maggot is the common name of the larval phase of development in insects of the order Diptera (flies). Sometimes the word is used to denote the larval stage of any insect.

Sounds like our carpet beetle life cycle:

A major problem also arises when maggots turn into flies and start the life cycle over again. Within a few generations the number of maggots exponentially grows and becomes a serious problem. Professionals can remove maggots or many over the counter bug sprays can be used to deter flies and maggots.

I'd call out a professional and have the house treated ASAP!

Um, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure that if you see one roach, others are already in the house. :( Roaches can come in from a variety of places - the most common location I've heard of is in cardboard boxes.

The saying goes "for every one roach you see, there are a hundred you don't see"

I'm sorry, I don't have anything useful to say but I wish I didn't click on your thread, lol.

O.M.G. my skin is just crawling now. There's something about maggots that really just freak me out!

Yeah....I've had my eyes wide open looking for anything. I guess I'll hope that roach found a way in via a box. THAT is a good reason to stop my internet shopping habit :p You all....I have NEVER seen a roach that big outside the zoo. It was BIG!

We'll be spraying this weekend.

Another good thing to living with bugs....I've lost my appetite

Yeah I've seen 'em that big before... I practically hit the ceiling the first time I saw one after moving to TX... they don't make 'em that big in VA!

I was thinking of canceling our quarterly pest control to try and save money, but after reading this I think we'll keep it!

A roach that big is probably an American cockroach and those don't usually invade your home like German cockroaches.

No comment on the roach but as far as flies...have you checked your chimney? When I was younger I remember one spring/summer we had a bunch of flies and they were multiplying. Apparently a squirrel(s) fell into the chimney and weren't able to get out (you see where this is going).

I think we get these also. I was wondering what they were..We only get them in June, then they go away?

That's what we thought! We saw the little beetles for many years upon moving into our house but many many generations later they'd taken over. We'd see an adult beetle one here or one there on the wall and not think anything of it. I didn't even know what they were! It wasn't until i found 100's of little larvae eating through my clothes in the closet that we realized how big of an issue we had! The'd put holes in a silk blouse like it was a leaf on a tree!

We get them year round because they're breeding from within where there aren't any climate restrictions. They live in the cracks of wood floors, vents, behind trim, under carpeting, anywhere dust settles, you name it! We didn't know we had a problem until it was so so so far out of control! They basically eat anything, dust, pet hair, natural fibers, etc... I'm seriously sickened each time i find a new larvae or beetle. Just knowing how many eggs 1 beetle can lay makes me want to vomit. Since the adults fly they can just fly in from outside. I blame the idiots that owned the house before us. When we did our walk through it was 85 degrees outside and they got mad when the inspector asked if he could turn on the a/c to test it. They had every window and door open and no screen doors so doors were just wide open!

Here's a thread i started on them... we have the varied carpet beetle. (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36499)
