I would just try to air it out.

Yep, the best thing you can do is put it outside on a deck or porch and let it air out.

BF's parents smoke in their house, all day long. Whenever we come home from a visit from them all of our clothes go straight into the dryer. Our luggage pretty much goes in the front door and out the back door and stays on the deck for at least a couple of days.

Depending on how long your bag was exposed to smoke, it probably won't take as long as ours does. Keep in mind his parents have lived in their house for at least 15+ years and smoked in it everyday, all day. Plus up until last year his sister lived with them and so there were 3 full time smokers there. It takes days to get the smell out of our stuff.

ETA: My luggage is cloth, but BF's luggage is leather and his always releases the smell quicker than mine does. Leather doesn't hold smoke as much.

Somebody once told me for my car to keep a newspaper in there and it would absorb the odor. Not sure if it was that or all the airing out.

Baking soda or charcoal may help.
