We haven't had a grill for the past 7 months while living in this condo. For the most part it hasn't been a big deal because, honestly, our life is so busy we normally eat out when SO is home. When we do cook (when he's home) its usually something quick in the oven. Since I'm home alone a lot, I make quick easy things for myself.
I got a box of filet's and crabcakes for christmas, I've already made a couple crabcakes and am dying to break out a filet but I'm wondering how to cook the darn thing?
I guess I've seen on TV people putting them in the oven (and my aunt will do prime rib in the broiler) or in a pan on the stove...is it just as good? What heat to cook at? I was thinking in a pan with a little butter and garlic?

We cook our Omaha Steak filets in the broiler, 5 minutes on one side, 4 on the other. The steaks are so good that they don't need any seasoning. I usually do salt, pepper and garlic.
We use a very hot stove and a very hot cast iron skillet and alternate for a couple minutes at a time in each. We just get the skillet on the stove top hot very hot, put the steak in for a couple minutes, flip, then move the skillet into a 500* oven for a couple minutes, flip for a couple minutes, repeat as necessary for thickness of steak and desired amount of well-done-ness.

We sear steak in a cast iron skillet for a few minutes on each side. Then we put the skilled in the broiler to finish up. Depending on the thickness of the steak it stays in for 5 or so minutes per side.
We have also used a stainless steel pan to cook which also works well. But I prefer my trusty old skillet.

Awesome! I knew I could get a reliable answer from my CC ladies.
We're currently house hunting, but who knows how long that's going to take...lol. In the meantime it's killing me being without a grill.

Very hot skillet with a bit of olive oil, season steak on both sides with salt and pepper, sear 5 minutes or so on each side. Then after its cooked place on a plate, smear some steak butter on (I like to mix prime-rib rub seasoning in mine), cover and let rest for 10 minutes or so.

I just cooked steaks this weekend. Hubby likes mine better on the stove top than the grill (which is odd for him). I put some Montreal seasoning on mine with a little Wistershire (spelling?) and put in a hot skillet with a little oil and sear it for about 5 minutes on each side. Taste just like the ones from the restaurant and are awesome! Just make sure to let it "rest" for a few minutes after taking it off the stove to let the juices redistribute.

Wish me luck, I'm attempting to do it on the stovetop tonight!!!! :)
Use a seasoned cast iron grill pan. Get it very hot, and then sear on both sides. : )
Good luck!
