DD (just turned 3) has been waking up dry about 1/3-1/2 the time in the last few weeks. Great, right? The problem is that on the mornings she wakes up dry, she wakes up anywhere from 30 mins- an hour earlier than normal, I think because she has to pee. I frankly don't much care if she wakes up dry or not at this point, but she really needs to get enough sleep. I am thinking of trying to wake her up to take her to the bathroom when I go to bed, to see if this helps her sleep better in the morning (she really needs that last hour, otherwise she is getting really cranky by the end of the day). Is this a bad idea? I don't like the idea of waking her up and interrupting her sleep, but I'm not sure what else to try. I really don't want to limit fluids in the evenings because I know that when I don't drink enough before bed I almost always end up with a UTI.

FWIW, the other night she woke up at 9 and was really fussy and couldn't go back to sleep. I went in there and asked her what was wrong, and she really couldn't tell me. But when I asked her if she needed to use the potty, she said yes and then peed like a gallon. So I think that if she feels like she needs to go she just can't sleep (and she doesn't go to the bathroom by herself yet- she still needs me to take her).

We are in this stage right now too. DD wakes dry about 75% of the time, but does need to pee sometime between 8pm and 7am. Last night she woke crying at 9:30pm and went back to sleep after peeing and slept until 7. But 2 nights ago she woke up at 6am peed and then played in her bed for 45 minutes. It seems like for us, a 9-11pm wake up is better becasue then she usually sleeps until 7am. I know lots of parents that do wake up kids before they go to bed to pee until this stage passes and they can go all night. It seems like there is disruption no matter what so go with what works best for overall sleep.

A friend of ours got their children out of bed at 11pm and carried them over to the potty, the kids peed and then they put them back in bed. Their kids never really woke up when they did this, but I have not tried it with DD because I am too afraid she is going to wake up and have a hard time falling asleep. If she is not night trained by next year, I will try it, but I am okay with her not being night trained. Our pediatrician said they don't worry until the child is 6 years old.

Thanks! Well, I tried it last night- I took her at 10, she peed, and then went right back to sleep. But she was still up at 6 this morning, and with a wet diaper to boot! But she also woke up with a cold, so I don't think this was much of an experiment. I may try again in a few days once she's better. Like I said, I don't really care whether she wakes up dry or not, but she gets sooo cranky when she's up much before 7.
