View Full Version : Farting Baby?

DS is 2 weeks old today. Since the day he was born, he has been a champ at passing gas. He farts when he's sleeping, when he's awake, when he's happy, when he's sad... you get the picture. It's often times very loud too, so loud that I accuse DH of doing it when it's really DS.
At DS's one week appointment at the ped, I asked about it. The ped didn't seem concerned and simply said that it was gas that needed to come out "the north end or the south end."
DS doesn't seem bothered by it. He never fusses when he toots and never wakes when he does it in his sleep. I just can't help but wonder if this copious amount of farting is normal or even good for him. What do you girls think?

Hmm... I guess I'm in the minority and have a weird child.
Farting babies, anyone? :p

It has been awhile but I remember DS farting alot and I definately remember the projectile poos when the fart happened during a diaper change. This kid sent his stuff a good 2 feet or more a few time. We quickly learned to change him facing sideways not front back. DS still farts quite a bit. I use it now as a learning moment to teach him about noticing his body and what it does. Fart happen more often than poop so I figure he is learning to become aware of his bottom and what it does.

myshel I could have written your post!!! Our DS was such a tooter from the start that it shocked all of us that something that small could make such sounds and so many. I felt like I gave birth to a whoopee cushion. My mom thought it was me a couple of times! DH is a doc so you would think he would know better but he kept saying ,"I thought babies were supposed to fart cute."
I was kind of alarmed by how much but the ped said it was normal. DS never really fussed from gas pain because I guess he got it all out. He was pretty farty (I can't believe I just typed that!) until 2 mo. maybe and then started decreasing. We still get a morning symphony in the AM when he wakes up.

I don't have any suggestions but the title of this thread made me laugh. Are you breastfeeding him? I wonder if he has the milk doesn't agree with him.

It's funny the things that you come to celebrate when you have issues with it. When I ruptured my appendix, I spent days gassy and couldn't get rid of it - north or south. It's extremely painful. When I could finally fart, everyone was so happy. :) Like your doctor said, he has to get rid of the gas one way or another. The alternative is very painful, and I know that you'd not wish that on him!

DS was/is a farter too Only my DS had trouble farting. He would cry and grunt before he could get it out. Same with pooping. We were SOOO happy when he started farting in his sleep!!! YEA for DS!! (he is now almost 5 months, and they aren't nearly as often or as loud).

We didn't call DS 'Mr. Tooters' for nothing! :p
My DS was a champion gas passer. I would always ask who farted because it sounded like 'adult toots'. I was just happy that he was getting the gas out of him. It would have been so uncomfortable if it had stayed in.

This is so true - and, warning, TMI - and was exactly my case after my c-section. How come no one ever tells you that the hospital won't let you leave until you've had a BM??? I had no idea to expect that. So not only was I "celebrating" DD's bm's I was also celebrating my own (and the precursors of tooting).
Anyway, DD (6.5 months now) used to fart a LOT!! MIL/FIL said she farted more than their two grandsons (our nephews). :) (So did my sister's son.) Frankly, nowadays I'm glad when she toots because it means I don't have to worry about burping her - like the doctor said, as long as it comes out one way or the other. Of course, now she's a champion burper, too!

Cam wakes up farting. He farts after he eats. I feel like I'm living in a frat house.
In afct, I always end up with that 70s carwash song in my head...
"ah beep beep...ah toot toot!"

Totally normal. Both of my girls were/are huge farters (they take after their dad;)). Sometimes Chelsea wakes me up with her farting.
