View Full Version : Reading your HPT result after 10 minutes

Okay. I'm not getting my hopes up. (yeah, sure, right!) But I took an hpt this morning for the heck of it. No reason really, since I have NO symptoms and I am only 10 dpo (approximately).

This is going to sound stupid, but when I went to pee on the stick, not much came out but a few drops. I watched it for about 10 seconds and the control line didn't even come up, so I figured I didn't have enough urine for it to work. So I set it on the shelf behind the toilet. I go about my business and come back about 20 minutes later and there is a BLARING line in the window. No evaporation line, a real honest-to-goodness line. Its only a shade lighter than the control line.

Could this be accurate even though I read it at 20 minutes? The instructions say not to read any result after 10 minutes, but I always assumed it was because of an evaporation line. Can a "real" line come up after 10 minutes?

Help! :o

39 Views and no one has a story to share? Anyone? :D

Well, I have a story to share but it's not a positive one so I wasn't sure if you wanted it. This happened to me once and it ended up being a chemical pregancy. I attributed the line not showing up in time to the fact that there just wasn't enough hormone in my urine (a blood test 2 days later came back at only 19). Since you are only 10dpo, hopefully it just means that you haven't built up enough hormone yet. What sensitivity test were you using? I would wait another day or two and try again (possibly with a different test). Good luck! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks aprilshowers. Well, I was planning on waiting and testing again in a couple of days, but I coudn't stand it. So I just took another test. I got a very faint line, but its definitely not as dark as the first one. So now I don't know what to think. Its not a very expensive brand, its the Rite Aid brand. A line is a line, right?

I'm not sure about the 20 minutes thing. I thought I had read they are not reliable after a certain amount of time.

However, yes a line is a line. :D :D :D

Be happy and maybe test again in a few days!!

I had something similar happen, and from my sig you can tell how that ended. :)

At first the test looked totally negative. I really thought I was pg (but had thought that too all other cycles) and didn't want to believe it, DH hugged me and went to sit down but I kept running back to look again, trying to convince myself it really was game over that cycle. Each time I went back I'd come running out - DH, look, squint, can you see that? - and it just made him look so sad that I quit. I went off to the computer to look up the detection threshold of the test I was using, went back one more time to the bathroom and - on the counter - two lines!! I'm not sure exactly how much time passed. It was probably not long after the 10-minute mark. That was at 13 dpo, in the evening.

I took another test the next morning, expecting a "real" line with FMU at 14 dpo. My heart skipped a beat when I went to read the test, it looked negative as all get out. Took again about 15 minutes to look positive. I cried, convinced I'd only gotten my hopes up the day before and that AF would show shortly. DH played hooky and we went to the RI for a blood test - I just wanted to know already. My B-hCG came back at 69. :D

BTB - your story gave me goosebumps on top of my goosebumps. :D

When I took the 2nd one at work, the line that came up was very faint. I had to look pretty closely, but it was there. I put it in my pocketbook and went back to my desk and kept pulling it out every few minutes. It kept getting clearer and clearer.

I might be pg! :D :D I need to go get another test at lunch!

Are you using a different brand each time or have you been using the same one?

I'm thinking you're PG.

YEAAAA!!!!!

Its the same brand, its a drugstore brand (Rite Aid). Now when I look at both tests, the lines look the same. Each time it has taken 15-20 minutes for the line to darken up. The first time, I didn't even look at it until 20 minutes later, so I don't know how light the line was initially. The second time, I actually watched it start out light and get darker as time passed.

To ease my mind, I am going to the supermarket and getting a name brand test.

Could it be? My 38 year old body still remembers how to to this!! :D

A line is a line!!! I had a very faint line the first time I tested with DD. Each time I tested after that it got a little darker.

YEAAA!! :D I'm hoping you confirm some exciting news later.

I say to get another brand of test. I used Answer line tests and also the ClearBlue digital (I swear by these).

Sheryl, if you're pg, we'll be due date buddies again....! :D

Try Equates, from WalMart, they're the best, most sensitive tests, imo.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!! :D

Well, details are in my lj for my lj buddies. The short story is that I took another HPT yesterday (it was an Accu-Clear) and a faint line came up immediately. It was pretty faint though. The weird thing is that by the 10 minute mark, it gets darker and by 15 minutes, it is super dark. (BTB - your story keeps me optimistic on this.)

I took another one this morning, and again a faint line within 3 minutes that was dark by 10 minutes.

I have taken these same tests before, and threw them in the trash when they were negative and pulled them out an hour later and NEVER saw even a trace of a line, so I am cautiously optimistic. I think I am 11 dpo (not really sure) so I am hoping it will just get darker over time.

Shan~ Assuming this pg sticks (please, please let it stick) I will be due April 17. :)

Thanks again everyone, for your stories and for your support.

Sheryl

Don't worry if they're getting darker or not. You had a faint line by 3 minutes and that's all you need. Congratulations!

Well, that kind of settles it, yes? A line is a line is a line... congratulations! :D I love happy endings!

From an April 2005 momma to an April 2006 momma, all the best for a smooth road ahead! :D

I would certainly think you were pregnant!

I took a test at 11dpo.. I was charting and was usually pretty regular (had only a max 10 day luteal phase), so I took it and saw nothing (this was a Brooks brand test, probably same as Rite Aid), threw it away and yup, dug it out of the trash an hour later and saw a blazing line. My heart jumped, but I assumed it was the whole evaporation line thing.

13dpo, I took another one with FMU, and sure enough- big positive within seconds that day!

Good Luck!!! (I was capecod03 on the WC and hung out on the WOHM thread with you!)

Thanks for the congrats! You know what is funny? I have told women over and over and over that "a line is a line", but somehow when it happens to you, its a whole different story. ;) You just don't believe it.

Hi Capecod/Lisa (Brady)!!! Thanks for sharing your story!

Just for the heck of it, I called the accu-clear company and told them about the line being super light and then darkening in about 10-15 minutes and they said that it was completely normal for the line to get darker as the test is working. :) So food for thought for anyone else who has this happen.

I had the same exact thing happen to me. I tried every test I could find and almost all of them were giving me faint lines that darkened after ten minutes. My HCG level was over fifty and I was still getting faint lines. The only test that gave me the definite answer was the clearblue easy digital test. It's the one that says "pregnant" or "not pregnant." They even make those in generic store brands and I kept getting "pregnant" read outs! Good luck :D

Shan~ Thanks for friending me over on LJ. If I get back over there today, I will do the same. :) I will join the April Mommies thread in a day or so. I at least want to miss AF first. Don't want to jinx myself. ;)

Suzlywoozly (cute username!) I thought of using the digital tests - actually had one in my hand yesterday - but I worried that at 10 dpo I would not have high enough hsg levels and might get a false negative. I am going to try one tomorrow, 13 dpo, just to ease my mind. I should have enough by then (I hope.)

They say the digital tests take more hcg (50 m/Iu) to get a positive but when I took my first pg test, I used the CBE digital and it was positive. I had my blood drawn two hours later and my hcg was only a 25. I was scared to use that test too, but it was the only test in the house and I was going nuts to find out! Good luck & congratulations!

I used both a digital and a regular pregnancy test. They both showed the results in no time. I love the digital tests. Something about seeing the word 'Pregnant' that makes it hit home.

Congratulations!!!!

Well, it hit home for me at about 11:30 this morning. :D Big 'ol 'pregnant' with a digital test at only 12dpo. Obviously not FMU either.

I am on air! :) Thanks again, everyone!
