Baby Carriers and Slings

Welcome to the wonderful world of babywearing! Wearing your baby is an excellent way to promote a strong parent-baby bond and foster a loving, nurturing relationship.

What do the experts say about wearing your baby?

From www.askdrsears.com:

A baby learns a lot in the arms of a busy caregiver. Carried babies fuss less and spend more time in the state of quiet alertness, the behavior state in which babies learn most about their environment. Babywearing improves the sensitivity of the parents. Because your baby is so close to you, you get to know baby better. Closeness promotes familiarity.

Choosing a Carrier or Sling

There are so many different types of baby carriers and slings, and it can be overwhelming trying to figure out which style is best for you and your baby. The first step is to determine your needs. How old is your baby? Do you hope to use this carrier throughout your child’s early years or only for a few months? What positions would you like to use when you carry your baby?
Once you determine your needs you can begin to explore the different styles of slings. Here is a brief explanation of the types of slings you are likely to read about when researching babywearing:

Asian Style Baby Carrier/ Mei Tai: This is a simple fabric soft carrier, usually made of one large piece of fabric to hold the baby and two long straps which wrap around the caregiver. Examples include the Kozy carrier (http://www.kozycarrier.com/)
http://www.kozycarrier.homestead.com/Pbackstripe-small.JPG

Back Pack Carrier: Usually used for toddlers and older children, this carrier goes on your back. It is great for long walks and hiking. Examples include the Kelty Kids line (http://www.kelty.com/Kelty/index.cfm?fuseaction=Kids.Home)
http://www.kelty.com/Kelty/Images/Products/Kids/ACFE21.jpg

Front Carrier typically a soft carrier designed for holding newborns and infants. Examples include the Baby Bjorn (http://www.babybjorn.com/index.asp?language=US)
http://www.babybjorn.com//filecache/260x0_$archive$images$products$mobility$0260$02606 3p1h.jpg

Hip Carrier Great for older infants and toddlers, this carrier allows you to carry babies on your hip. An example is the Hip Hammock (http://www.playtexbaby.com/hiphammock/ )
http://www.playtexbaby.com/images/photos/250x368/hiphammock.jpg

Podaegi a versatile Asian style carrier which allows you to carry your baby on your front or back, with or without straps. An example is the Ella Roo On Mama’s Back Podaegi (http://www.cottoncradles.com/podaegi.htm)
http://www.cottoncradles.com/podaegipic.jpg

Pouch pouches can be adjustable or non-adjustable. They hold your baby in a snug carry close to their caregiver. Pouches are generally easy to use, and the adjustable ones can be used by more than one adult. They are compact and can be folded up to carry in a diaper bag. Some can carry babies weighing up to 40 pounds! Examples include
Kangaroo Korner Adjustable Fleece Pouch (http://www.kangarookorner.com/k_shop_pouches_custom.shtml)

Rebozo A tradition of Mexico, this is a large piece of fabric tied with a knot which holds your baby in a variety of positions. An example is the Rebozo Way (http://www.cottoncradles.com/rebozoway.htm)
http://www.cottoncradles.com/rebozotradnurse.jpg

Ring Sling These are highly adjustable and can be very lightweight. They consist of a long piece of fabric which wraps around the caregiver’s body and over one shoulder. It is held together by running fabric through two large rings. Ring slings have a “tail”, which is fabric that hangs down from the rings. Tails can be open, which means that the fabric is loose, or closed, which means that the fabric is sewn together. An example of an unpadded sling with an open tail is the Maya Wrap (http://www.mayawrap.com/)
http://www.mayawrap.com/images/misc/valerie_SM64_hip_sm.jpg

Wrap this is a long piece of fabric that wraps around the caregiver and baby. Very versatile in that it offers many options for wearing baby and the same wrap can be used by adults of different sizes. An example is the Moby Wrap (http://www.willowbean.com/ordermobywrap.html)

Here are some tips and suggestions for making the most of your experience.

From [url]http://www.thebabywearer.com/lists/HowTo.htm:

The sling should rest on your shoulder, not in the crook of your neck.

Rings (if using a ring sling) should be in corsage position, in the hollow below your shoulder.

Your baby should be at or above your waistline

If your back continues to hurt, consider having a massage or chiropractic care. Sometimes back pain while using the sling is more about your back than the sling.

Nursing in a Sling

Slings are excellent for discreetly nursing your baby in public. Most nursing mothers find that a ring sling has the adjustability desired for comfortable nursing. An open tail provides a nice cover for your baby as s/he eats, and it can double as a burp cloth to wipe up any little messes that happen.

yay! im so glad to see so many familiar faces here too. of course its all familiar faces, but you know what i mean. the thread looks like crap in the "new" wc boards. im so glad it looks normal over here. :)

i still need to update some of the info on the first posts, i was posting those right when stella woke up from her nap. does anyone know if i can put links to my website and the other wc sling-making mamas websites on here in the "where can i get a sling" section or as an example of where to get slings? i havent checked the community rules yet (shame on me) and id love to give us all a place to quietly advertise our businesses.

and does anyone have any additional info or links i should include in the first few posts?

Yeah! Thanks, nancy, for setting this up. The thread on WC helped me choose a sling for DD#2. I ended up ordering a zolo sling and it came in a few days ago. Haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it looks doable.

Picking up where I left off at WC. My newest additions are: a Toddler Patapum (very comfy even though I got it most for DH. I wore DS down to sleep in it the other day), a Mammas Milk IAP Silk Pouch, and 2 Chicslings (1 reversible cotton, 1 solarweave).

moderngal you might like a mei tai style carrier. they are extremely adjustable and comfortable. you can wear it on your front or back or hip. they fold down and pack away in a diaper bag quite easily. some sites to check for them: www.kozycarrier.com, www.peppermint.com, www.attachedtot.com, www.catbirdbaby.com, www.kolamobaby.com, www.rosiebaby.com (thats my site ;), not sure of the rules about self-promotion).

I'm so glad to see this thread here. The thread on the other site was so big and I was too intimidated to jump in.

My baby is due in early September and I SO want to have a ring sling for him/her. I always thought they were a little hippy dippy for me, but now that I'm actually going to be a mom and have read all of the positive effects of wearing your baby, I really want one. I have been unsuccessful at finding a store in my area that actually carries them and I am overwhelmed by the websites to choose from. I don't want one that is made from hemp or tie-dyed, etc (no offense to anyone that likes these - they are just very much not my style!). I want a pretty fabric, with a pocket, and a long enough tail to cover us when b/f. Am I asking for too much? I've seen the silk ones by zolo, but I don't know if I want to shell out that much $$. Can anyone suggest an alternative?

Thanks again for starting this thread here!

Hi Kate! I just went back to look at this thread again and I somehow missed your post the first time. It's so good to "see" you here. Kisses to Alex for me!

princess crappy (lol at your screen name, btw) the maya wrap is the first ring sling i used, and while it had a slight learning curve it does have all the features you are looking for. it comes in solid colors, has a pocket, nice long tail, and it even comes with an instruction video. you may be able to find one on ebay, but if not try their website at www.mayawrap.com.

you might also look at these websites to see if there is a local babywearing group or class near you, babywearers are almost always eager to help people learn to choose and use slings.

princess crappy i wouldn't rec starting with a zolo silk or even using it as an everyday sling, the fabric is really thick in the rings, making it hard to adjust and the tail is really big and floppy. if you want the same look, there's the fancy baby sling (www.fancybabysling.com), i've used mine a lot, no pocket though.

bluhimmy ~ DH hasn't actually tried the Toddler Patapum yet but has said he *may* try it! I'm hoping he'll use it on our cruise in September.

i wouldn't rec starting with a zolo silk or even using it as an everyday sling, the fabric is really thick in the rings, making it hard to adjust and the tail is really big and floppy. if you want the same look, there's the fancy baby sling, i've used mine a lot, no pocket though.
I love my silk Zolo because it is thicker through the rings it stays and I never have to adjust it much. I can just put it on and go. That being said I didn't have it when DS was a newborn and I'm not sure I would have used it with a younger one. I usually save it for dressier occasions (used it for my aunts 50th surprise b-day party a few weeks ago) but if I'm having a bad day a silk Zolo with jeans is nice too. ;)

The shoulder on the Fancy Baby sling looks really narrow. Do you find it comfortable?

I really love my Taylormade Treasures (www.taylormadetreasures.com) organic cotton mesh ring sling but it doesn't have a pocket either. I have a friend IRL who uses a TMT sling every day as her main sling.

"The shoulder on the Fancy Baby sling looks really narrow. Do you find it comfortable?"

I was wondering the same thing. The ones I make/use are probably twice that width so I find it hard to think anything narrower would be comfortable. But, I haven't used one so what do I know;)

Hey Carrie! (aka PrincessCrappy - too funny, I couldn't remember you and Jill's edd's and I wasn't sure which of you this was since I could see BOTH picking this screen name!) There are a ton of babywearing groups that I'm sure you could visit. It seems like there are even more in CA than elsewhere so maybe there's one near you? I can't remember the names of the major organizations (I'm sure someone here knows or that it's on the first page) but they have websites that list locations - maybe you could go and check out the slings the mama's there have and see what you're interested in.

I hear you on the not being too "hippy trippy" - when I get a sling or pouch it needs to be something that I feel comfortable wearing in my generally conservative when it comes to clothing DC... Have you thought about a pouch instead of (or in addition to) a sling? They don't have the tail which seems to have a lot of good benefits, but they do seem easy to use and I like the sort of more tailored look which might appeal to you more...

"The shoulder on the Fancy Baby sling looks really narrow. Do you find it comfortable?"
i don't know why the model is wearing it that way, irl it has a fanning shoulder just like other slings. i wasn't expecting much when i bought it, since it's a lesser known sling maker, but was pleasantly surprised. i ended up using it quite a bit, it adjusts easily to get a perfect fit. i bought one on sale though, i don't think i'd pay full price.
i guess i'll need to break in my silk zolo with the next one. i was absolutely dying to buy it and never even used it, every time i tried i got frustrated with trying to adjust it.
i never loved my maya either, my most used ring sling was probably the hold me baby sling (www.holdmebabyslings.com) , they've recently shortened the tail though, which was dumb.
we're trying out the patapum for the first time today, i'm hoping dd will tolerate grocery shopping that way.

I have a KK padded sling in a basic black fabric. It goes with everything, and I've had lots of compliments on it. I have flown a bit with DD since I take her on business trips, and the businessmen on my flights have always commented on the fact that the sling looks nice--a businesswear baby sling! :)

And I love it--quite comfy and has gotten tons of use. I still use it everyday, and DD is 11 months old. Kangaroo Korner doesn't seem to carry the exact fabric I got on their current site, but the "Black Micro Stripe" fabric is close. (http://www.kangarookorner.com/k_shop_padded_kkps_custom.shtml) Or I'm sure you could get a custom fabric sling from a WAHM.

Thanks Teresita! I think when the time comes that I want to buy something, regardless of sling or pouch, it'll have to be something with a similar subtle pattern or a solid or something... My main sling "look" (as opposed to use) issue is really about the tail - I love the concept of a tail as something to help shade or nurse discreetly or whatever. But I am such a sloppy dresser anyway, I don't want it to look like another scraggly un-tailored aspect of my attire that day. Kwim? But I'm still a LONG ways away from needing anything new so hopefully I'll get to try out some slings and pouches before then and figure out what I want/need.

Wow! Thanks everyone for all of the helpful responses.

I looked at the two babywearing sites Nancy Drew posted, but there is nothing in my area. The closest would be over an hour away. I live in a major city (San Diego) so it's odd to me that I can't find a group or retailer around here. Although, I have to admit, I don't see a lot of slingin' mamas in the area.

I think I'll wait on the Zolo for when the baby gets bigger -- thanks for mentioning that it might not be perfect for a newborn!

I checked out all of the links you guys posted, and I think the style of the slings at Fancy Baby Sling (http://www.fancybabysling.com/) is closest to what I'm looking for. I, too, was concerned about the shoulder, but Dana B, since you actually have one, you probably know best.

Have any of you heard of these slings: Sleeping Baby (http://www.sleepingbaby.net/slings.html?PHPSESSID=f67d8dbe108ddad15fb7e10caade 381d)? I found her talked about on the Baby Bargains site. I'm just wondering if her prices are too good to be true?

Kate As I was laying bed "counting kicks" last night, I realized I didn't explain who I was in my last post (with the new screen name). You're right, it does describe me or Jill! I totally understand what you mean about the tail on ring slings looking a little sloppy. THat's exactly why I want it in a more "fashionable" fabric. I tried a pouch with my nephew a few years ago when he was first born, and I found it super uncomfortable. I like that the ring slings are adjustable.

princesscrappy what kind of a pouch was it? i never used pouches b/c i had a new native that i hated when she was a newborn, i now use a hotsling that i completely love, it's my favorite carrier for this age. you may like the tailored look of them and she has really great fabrics to choose from.

abbylynn

Kate ~ I know some people wrap the tail around the rings of the sling to keep it out of the way. You can also tuck it into the pouch of the sling.

Carrie ~ The problem with pouches is that if they're not the right size for you they can be uncomfortable (especially unadjustable pouches). Ring Slings are much easier to share between people because of the adjustability. I've heard good things about the slings made by Jan at Sleeping Baby. She was formerly known as Reverand Jan so you may find reviews that way. I know they have been discussed at www.thebabywearer.com and there may even be reviews there.

I wanted to delurk and thank y'all for the inspiration. I made my very first ring sling 2 weeks ago:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b118/wcsebskitty/momsling.bmp

My mom and I had my 1 yo nephew for the weekend, and I had an old scrap of fabric, so I decided to give it a shot. It was sooo easy and took just a few minutes to put it together. It was so nice to tote him around hands free - I will def. be making these for my friends and using them myself when the time comes.

Looking for some advice please!

I never really thought of myself as a baby-slingin'-mama, but when my reflux and colicky DD was born, the Moby Wrap was literally the only thing that would silence the hours and hours of screaming. I was hooked! Now DD is almost 11 months old and 22 pounds. My back will tolorate neither the Moby nor the Bjorn any longer. I think I'm in the market for a MT. I've been looking at the EllaRoo MT's and the Rosie Baby MT's. Frankly, I prefer the Rosie Baby fabrics. But I've read such great things about the EllaRoo, everyone's glowing recommendations. Is the EllaRoo different in some way? Is it made better? Does anyone have a Rosie Baby MT that they love?

My poor old back and I thank you for any info or help!

Does anyone feel like they get caught on the extra fabric of their ring slings? I've been thinking of a hotsling for a 2 reasons

1) I like that there isn't any extra fabric
2) DH would never sling so I would be the only one using it.

Alexis~~I used my ring sling a ton when Aiden was smaller (20 months now) and still do for quick trips to the store. I have a pouch as well and just don't seem to grab it first. If you like the clean lines look then a pouch would likely be a good look for you.

LexyLou, I had a ring sling when DS was a baby and I never ended up using it because it was just too much trouble to get DS in there and adjusted to where he was comfortable with all that fabric to adjust. I felt like it was hard to get it adjusted through the rings. Meanwhile, my friend had a New Native pouch and would just pop her daughter in there and she was so happy and snug. I was jealous. I'm sure some of this is just my inability to watch the Maya Wrap DVD (I could never make it to the section of interest). :p

And all the fabric wasn't my fave. I popped the sring ling out some when DS was older for the hip carry and I did feel a bit weird having all this fabric cascading down my front. I never used the tail to cover while breast feeding, so it wasn't helpful to me. I use a Mei Tai carrier now which I love for the older baby.

Anyways, not to be coming down on the ring slings, since I know tons of people love them, but it just didn't work well for me. IF I have baby #2, I will try a pouch for sure.

Lex - I never had any luck with the ring sling either. However, my friend just loves it. I think a Hotsling is a great choice for you. I love using the pouch; it's very easy.

blessed02 i love p. quintana stuff. i've seen those pouches before, do they even come in different sizes? it doesn't look like they're adjustable and the one on the model seems way too big.

lexylou imo, the benefits of a ring sling are being able to nurse in it (much harder in a pouch) and being able to lay the baby down to sleep in it. a baby can still sleep in a pouch, but the ring sling can adjust more to their sleeping position. i think you need both :p

Lan- Check out www.thebabywearer.com. There are reviews of almost every sling you could think of there. I don't know anything about them, myself, but I do know a mama who would make you a pouch if you picked the fabric.

Lan, I don't know about those fabrics, but the pouch itself seems pretty standard. I agree with Sarah that if you found some fabric you liked (say, about 2 yards of it) and thought about it really hard, you might come up with a mama who'd make you one. :)

alexis i loved having a ring sling at first. the extra fabric was actually helpful when i wanted to breastfeed without worrying that i was exposing myself. the extra tail fabric can be tucked into the pouch part of the sling when you arent using it to cover up, too. now that stella is older i use my pouch more. i just didnt like it in the beginning. she hated having her head tucked inside the sling and i couldnt figure out how to put her in the pouch any other way. but every baby is different. if you want the hotslings pouch i say go for it, most people love theirs and i bet you would use it at one point or another. after your daughter is born you might try out a babywearing class or workshop near you (im pretty sure there are several in your area) and try out the ring slings and pouches and wraps etc. and see what works best for you and your girl.

blessed02 i did a little poking around and found no reviews of those pouches and i do agree with dana that the one on the model seems way too big. hopefully thas just so you can see the baby or something. ill keep looking, see if i can find any info on those :) but i bet there are some mamas here who can make those pouches too. probably for less $$$. ;)

Oopsie - I think the pouch that I already have may be a bit big, too, then. (Although it could be that the baby in the Paula Quintana picture is mammoth. Seriously, that is one behemoth baby!) The problem is that I measured my pouch sizing while I was big-pregnant, and I think now my baby hangs a little low. My newborn hangs out at around waist level -- should it be more like around belly button level?

that is one flaw of pouches, IMO. so many of us want a pouch, sling, whatever before the baby is born so we have something to use right away but the measurements are supposed to be done on a non-pg woman. i bet tons of women end up hating their pouches because it is too big and the baby is hanging out at waist level and, as phart said, after a while that hurts.

I am trying to find something my 5-week old will actually like!

He can only deal with the Snugli for 10-20 minutes. Which hurts by back anyway.

He hates the Nojo sling in every position.

But...he did like it when my LC arranged him on me by putting him high on my chest under a stretchy tank top and securing him with a (faux) pashmina tied behind my back. He stayed there for hours! I think he likes being right against me securely...and I liked that my hands were free.

The closest things I can find out there are like
The Ultimate Baby Wrap:

Moby Wrap

Anyone have a recommendation?

I prefer a stretchy material, and only plan to wear him in the front.

LexieLou have you checked out some of the gorgeous fabrics though...??? I know I have some sites up in my LJ...

Question - For Hotslinging do you find it is difficult to get the right size? Right now I am almost 9mo and I want to get something before baby gets here, but worried about the sizing for a pouch right now. I am on the cusp of sizes for most places and I am worried that if I loose weight or my ribs go back to normal I will not be able to use it. Anyone else deal with that?

kimthebride if you want something stretchy, then i think any of the 3 you listed would be perfect. i've never used any of them, but other people seem to love those with a newborn. i'm planning on using a hug-a-bub with my next one.

adore_one i think it'd be kinda hard to figure out the right size right now. i'd email kristen at hotslings and see what she thinks.

What are youy all using for your toddlers?

I have been planning on getting a mei tai, but am a little gunshy, mainly because it seems like a pain to put the kid in and take him out. I am used to just tossing a ring sling over my shoulder when I want to carry the boy, and wonder if I'll use a mei tai much if it's much less convenient.

What's this about a Toddler Papatum? Is it quicker on-off than a mei tai?

Would love to hear any opinions...

Yaya~~I use both the ring sling and the Mei Tai. I got the hang of the back carry with my MT really fast so I probably use them equally. Aiden thinks it's hilarious to ride on my back. Find a MT that has a 30 day return policy ;) that way you'd have plenty of time to try it out.

I need to google this Toddler Papatum...

dana b

yaya i'm not really using my ring slings anymore, i mostly use hotsling pouches or the patapum. i use the hotsling first, but if we're going somewhere like target or grocery shopping, then i use the patapum b/c she won't sit in the cart and if she's in the pouch she'll want to grab everything and push the cart  keeping her on my back keeps her out of the way. i really like my mt, but i think the patapum is more comfortable. i have the reg patapum and noa's 18 lbs, if m is bigger (which i'm sure he is) then i'd probably go with the toddler size.

eta: getting the patapum on is a bit quicker than the mt, the only thing i don't like is that i look like i'm gonna go hiking.

Dude, those oopa slings are crazy expensive. And why do they have so much fabric in the tail? That looks annoying. Even my Maya, which I don't think has that much fabric, gets annoying- that would drive me nuts. Doesn't look terribly useful or practical, IMO. Bet it's dry clean only!

The Oopa tail is supposed to be long and dramatic. Although, if you're on the short side it can be annoying. I have a pique Oopa that I got through a co-op and its quite comfy. I'm kicking myself for not getting a silk one. Most of the reviews I've hard of the silk Oopas have been very positive and they say they're very comfy.

For toddler slinging, I mostly use pouches for quick trips and MTs for longer carries. I have a Toddler Patapum too that I got recently. I got it mostly for DH in the hopes that he'll wear DS on our upcoming cruise. I originally purchased the Original Patapum through a co-op and a month later found out about the Toddler version so I sold my practically brand new original. The main differences between the two are: the back panel is 3" taller on the toddler and the shoulder straps on the toddler attach to the wasit band instead of to the sides of the back panel. There are two straps from the side of the toddler back panel that attach to the shoulder straps. The toddler version also has a higher weight limit and is for older kids and the instructions specifically say not to use it with a younger child (but I can't remember how young).

ETA Info on Stretchy Wraps.

Of the 3 stretchy wraps posted I'd go with the Hug-a-Bub or the Moby. The Ultimate Baby Wrap has lycra in it and I've heard people say it is too stretchy and has a lot of bounce as a baby gets heavier. Two other stretchy wraps are the Cuddly Wrap, which is made by Peapod out of Canada and the Hot Mama Wrap by Mom and Me Creations.

After reading along with and doing some research, I ordered my Mei Tai from Rosie Baby (recommended by Candy and I love the fabrics Nancy has on her website). I can't wait for it to come it! I ordered it in the following fabric:

I have the rosiebaby mei tai, which I LOVE. But, I'm not so proficient at the back carry yet. I never feel like I've got Noah really secure in it, and find myself leaning forward to comensate for his weight. Any tips to getting him more snug on my back? Thanks.

I'm interested in getting a pouch for my newborn that's due in September. I've used a ring sling before, but I find the ring a bit annoying.

I'm interested in the Kangaroo Korner Adjustable Pouch and the New Native Carrier. I'm leaning toward the KK Adjustable Pouch because it is adjustable. I'm a bit worried that it might seem baby will fall out without the ability to tighten since it doesn't have a ring, but I've heard really great things about that pouch. Anyone have either of these and can recommend which one I should get?

Along the lines of Cynthia's question, I am thinking of buying either a KK adjustable cotton pouch or a hotslings cotton pouch. My DS is currently 7 weeks and already weighs at least 11 pounds. Which pouch is more comfortable for long periods of time and will be usable for longer? I don't want to get a fleece pouch as it is way too hot here in the summer for fleece.

Pouches~~I only have experience with the KKAFP and my own made pouch but I can assure that your baby will not fall out if you have him/her properly in the fabric:) I do love my KKAFP. I love the color and I love the adjustability as I can wear it over clothes or over my winter coat.

Hi there!

I'm so glad a new thread was started. I was intimidated by the length of the WC one.

I have a ring sling and a pouch sling made by the awesome Marisa, and they have been total lifesavers for calming DS. In fact, it's pretty much the only way to get him to go to sleep.

At this point, though, I am also considering buying a Mei Tai for long walks. I love my slings, but if I go too far or too long, my shoulder and back start to hurt.

Questions:

Is a Mei Tai a good investment while DS is still so little, or should I wait until he is older?

We haven't tried our Bjorn yet because I hear it can damage a young baby's pelvis if he isn't yet sitting up. Could a Mei Tai do the same damage?

DS likes to see where he is going. If he is facing me in a Mei Tei, will he still be able to look around?

And just because I love this picture:

nancy drew

roseanne- your son is adorable! he looks so happy! he could be a poster child for babywearing :)

mei tais are great, but im a bit biased since i make them ;). i dont think its too early, i know some other mamas who have been using a mei tai with newborns and they love them. he may not be able to see much, but as his neck muscles get stronger and he has better head control that will change. and as soon as he is good at sitting up you can wear him on your hip with a mei tai or a ring sling or pouch.

as far as your concerns about a mei tai damaging a babys spine or pelvis like a bjorn style carrier, mei tais are designed to avoid that problem. a baby in a bjorn is pretty much hanging off the parent, and all of the babys weight is on his or her pelvis. this puts excessive pressure on the babys spine and *can* cause damage. plus there is the risk of having bunched up fabric on the babys legs or other issues. i used a snugli front and back carrier with stella a few times and her legs always had really deep red marks afterwards. it couldnt have been comfortable for her. oh, and keep in mind that those studies that say a bjorn can damage your child is usually based on overdoing it with one of those carriers. with a mei tai your baby is in a better position for his development. "they" recommend having the babys knees higher than his hips. a newborn in a mei tai sits with his legs "froggy" style, at either side of his body. his spine will curve in a more natural position as he is cradled against you. and as he grows you will just need to make sure to have his knees higher than his bum, but that goes for riding on your hip in a pouch or ring sling too.

hope that helps :)

O.k., next thing, I wanted to report back & thank Nancy for all your help re: wearing my mei tei while preggo (yes, it was eons ago, I'm a little slow) Anyway, I've tried a few times to wear DD in the MT and I've come to the conclusion that she just hates being carried on my back. Too bad, since that's pretty much my only option at 19 weeks pg. She went ballistic in the MT - pulling my hair, kicking, screaming - the whole nine yards. She doesn't like the backpack carrier either, so I think she just has some issues  Anyway, maybe I'll finally get to use this MT w/the next baby :)

Dreshny I started using my Rosebaby Mei Tai when DD was about 6 weeks old. She didn't really care for the ring sling yet, so that's why I ordered the MT. She LOVED it.

I would cross her legs inside. She loved being bunched up and close to me. It was also great for wearing her down to sleep. She's sleeping in this pic. You can fold down the top when they are awake so they can see out.

Even now at 5 month, she likes it a lot. I like it even better since I can get so much done now. I love my sling for nursing on the go, but prefer the MT for more everything else.

What do you recommend for a pouch. I love my Hotslings. Most of her fabrics are light enough for our hot weather too. At last count I have 6 Hotslings (2 fleece (I couldn't resist one on clearance), 1 stretch twill that is a tad tight, 1 stretch sateen, 1 hemp twill (very comfy), and 1 silk that Kristen made as a prototype). I recently got a microfleece Peanut Shell that is very comfy but her other stretch fabrics don't have a padded leg rail like the Hotslings does (you don't really need it with fleece).

Candy -- I really liked the New Native pouch for leaving in the diaper bag/car. It folds up smaller than a receiving blanket but I can still use it with toddler Joey (in a hip carry). I liked the style so much that I learned how to make pouches in that style so I could have different colors and leave them anywhere I might want a sling. :) (You can see Roseanne and Asher using the pouch I made them on the page before this one.)

Another vote for hotslings - I've got two, a twill and a sateen cotton. The cotton is so light and smooth, I haven't had a problem wearing DD outside this month. I'll order a fleece for fall when she stocks up. :)

Beevo - I wore a Snugli once, when I was babysitting a friend's then 3 month son. I had it on for about 20 minutes before I found it really uncomfortable, and I needed help getting him in and out of it. That part would've been easier with an older baby with rock solid head control, he was still working on that, but it would only be more uncomfortable, I imagine, with a heavier baby. BB rates the Bjorn really highly among those type of carriers FWIW.

I have a Snugli and don't really like it. It hurts my back and shoulders after 5 minutes or so. I did just get it and used it for the first time when DD was 17ish lbs, so that probally adds to the discomfort. I like slings MUCH better.

Marisa
08-01-2005, 08:14 PM
I had a Snugli too, and I only liked it for a brief time -- DS hated it as a newborn, but really liked it when he was big enough and had good head control, around 3 months. Then he could face out, and (I would imagine) pretend that it was *him* walking along!

Of course by that time he was near the weight limit... So that didn't last long at all. (It wasn't the most comfy, so I wasn't all that upset to pack it away.)

i had a front and back snugli. it didnt hurt *me* to wear it, as it had tons of straps to tweak so i could get it to fit perfectly. but when i took stella out she had deep red marks on her legs from the leg holes. sometimes dh wore her in there but we would put a cloth dipe (clean one) over the leg holes to pad them. once we got into the sling and mei tai scene we stopped using the snugli though. the red marks looked pretty uncomfortable.

Either a Mei Tai

or a wrap (one long peice of fabric...I only have a front carry picture)

are both good for a back carry. I agree that the ring sling is awkward when used that way.

Oh I'm just happy to have an asian baby carrier other than the true podegi my Korean MIL gave me. Please confirm my suspicion that slings are not meant for long walks.

We originally bought the slings (thanks, Marisa!) to use on public transportation and to help us carry the baby and the stroller down the four flights of stairs from our apartment to the street. So when he was 2 weeks old, DS rejected the stroller, and though he'll now tolerate it for maybe 15 minutes at a time when he's awake (not long enough to go anywhere), it's not really worth carrying it down all the stairs, at this point.

Long story short, we use our slings for everything: walks, getting him to nap, getting him to sleep, holding him when he's fussy, etc.

But now that DS is probably about 13 lbs, I'm losing feeling in my arm whenever I wear him for more than an hour. I love to walk, but I can't really get anywhere now. Is it just me?

By the way, I have a mei tai (thanks, Nancy!), but DH hasn't been able to figure it out with me yet.

I agree. For us, if we're going to a festival or something like that, I've got my Moby Wrap (or a big piece of cloth tied a la mamatoto.org). That way he's secure and using both of my shoulders and my back, rather than a one-sided thing.

yep, the mei tai or wrap style carrier is way better for long walks. ring slings and pouches are great for quick trips, or longer trips with a tiny baby, but they just dont cut it with older, heavier babies in my opinion.

feel free to ask if you need some help figuring out the mei tai, there are so many of us here who use them im sure we can offer some advice :)

Dreshny ~~Is it possible you need to fan out the shoulder more? I used my ring sling for hours and hours at an ourdoor concert/festival when DS was about 6 months old or so and all was well.

Dreshny
08-18-2005, 01:32 PM
Shannon: I'm fanning my pouch sling, and it definitely helps, but I was exhausted after an hour and a half walk this morning. If I flip the fabric over my shoulder, DS's head isn't as supported.

Oh, I also wanted to ask what to do if DS falls asleep in the kangaroo carry. We've tried it a few times, and he seems to love it, but after a while his head starts bobbing a little, even when he's awake (he's 11 weeks.) At that point, I switch him back into the cradle carry, and he usually falls asleep. But what happens when he's too big for the cradle carry?

nancy drew
08-23-2005, 04:49 PM
roseanne i think you will still be able to do a modified cradle carry even when he is bigger. you can also try and switch to a tummy to tummy carry. you also might be using a hip carry by then, and that is easier to switch to a tummy hold, which is a pretty comfy sleeping position.

CPSC, ZoloWear Announce Recall of Infant Carriers/Slings

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: ZoloWear Infant Carriers/Slings

Units: About 177

Manufacturer: ZoloWear Inc., of Austin, Texas

Hazard: The stitching that attaches the webbing to the carrier/sling can
break, posing a fall hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: ZoloWear has received one report of the webbing
coming apart from the sling, but the baby was not in the sling at the
time. The company has not received any reports of falls or injuries.

Description: The recalled slings are made of 100-percent cotton fabric
or 97 percent cotton/ 3 percent Lycra with two pieces of webbing holding
the rings to the fabric. Solid natural color and five prints (Splash,
Pink and Black Stripe, Pink and Brown Stripe, Pink Punch and The
Hamptons) make up the lots included in the recall. A large white label
sewn on the pocket of the slings reads "Zolo." ZoloWear slings should
have three rows of stitching securing the webbing and fabric together.
Some of the slings in these lots have short webbing, so only one row of
stitching holds the webbing in place.

Sold at: The ZoloWear.com Web site, individual distributors, and five
children's boutiques in California, Hawaii and Texas sold these slings
from May 2005 through August 2005 for between $70 and $90.

Manufactured in: U.S.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using these carriers/slings immediately
and call ZoloWear for instructions on having the carriers/slings
repaired.

Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact ZoloWear, Inc. at
(888) 285-0044 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or

Ok, I just got my first Kangaroo Korner sling, and I'm having trouble with it. The instructions that came with it aren't helping too much, either.

Questions:
-if I want ds facing in, how do I get him in there without having his legs be bent in strange positions?
-Do I put ds in the sling before I put it on me and then just slip it over my head?

I just hope that I didn't spend all this money and then have this be yet another piece of baby gear that goes unused...

nancy drew
08-26-2005, 09:50 AM
jenyfer is it a ring sling or pouch? either way, you put the sling on first, then put the baby in. this site (http://zolowear.com/Wearing.aspx) has some great video instructions on using either a sling or pouch. this site (http://www.mayawrap.com/n_video.php) has instructional videos on ring slings and pouches too. if none of that helps then maybe we will have to have a chicago moms gtg/sling demo. :)

I wanted to add that legs will appear to be in strange positions, but after trying a few times with both mother and baby in good moods (stopping as soon as the mood changes LOL), you will both stop thinking of it as being a strange position. And you'll likely find that baby likes being all scrunched up. :D

Here's a troubleshooting link (http://www.kangarookorner.com/k_how_troubleshoot.shtml).

So DS's new thing is that he wants to stand up in the pouch sling when I put him in the kangaroo hold, and I've been holding him tightly across the chest and letting him do it. (I swear he wants to walk already...)

I'd like to use the mei tai, but I don't think we're doing it right. How are his legs supposed to go? DH has been bending DS double with his feet against his chest. I don't think DS objects to his leg position necessarily, but I don't think he likes facing inward. Can he face outward, too? We tried the mei tai only briefly before DS cried and we had to take him out.

Then again, the one time we tried our Bjorn, DH said DS quietly fussed the whole time. Maybe he doesn't like to be held vertically? Or he's too young for the mei tai? Or does he just prefer slings?

mollyeilis
08-29-2005, 09:16 PM
Hmm, well, personally, we didn't carry Eamon in anything but the cradle hold for awhile. Looks like your little one is 3 months? We weren't carrying him in other ways at that point...

Of course, he's 15 months now and still adores to be carrying facing me in his Moby and mei tai (OK I just got the MT and only carried him in it twice LOL). He flirts with the people behind us. :)

So maybe he's unusual and maybe our experiences don't translate well to others. :)

Dreshny
08-29-2005, 09:21 PM
Hi Molly! DS loves the cradle hold, and it's actually one of the only ways to get him to sleep. But 1) I don't always want him to fall asleep in the sling--he needs his awake time, too, and 2) I'm concerned he's getting too big for it (in the pouch) because his legs often end up dangling over the side.

nancy drew

stella used to like standing in the ring sling too. then i learned she wasnt in there the right way (it was in the hip hold, im not saying you are doing it wrong but *i* was). i think that in the kangaroo hold babies are "supposed" to be sitting cross legged, knees at the chest. but generally what people say is if the baby and the parent are happy with it then dont mess with it.

you can do a front facing carry with the mei tai. my daughter was too big for me to try that when i started making and using mei tais but i know of at least one other cc member/mei tai wearer who uses a front facing carry with her dd. to do a kangaroo carry in the mei tai you would cross babys legs like he was sitting on the floor, then sort of bring them up so his knees are at chest level. for a baby who is facing inward you bend the legs on either side like a frog, with knees up at chest level but on the sides of the body.

my daughter hated the snugli but loved the slings and mei tai. i think the leg holes really hurt her legs, they left red marks and it seemed really uncomfy, so maybe thats why he was unhappy in the bjorn?

one of the great things about mei tais is that you can use them comfortably from the time a baby is a newborn through the toddler years. they are so versatile. so i doubt he is too young for it, i think its a matter of tweaking the position until you find one that works for both of you.

So I just bought a ring sling. Can you ladies tell me at what age/weight ranges a ring sling was most useful to you? When you switched or phased in other types of carriers, did you continue to use your ring slings occasionally?

Basically, and more broadly, what I'm wondering is:

When is a pouch most useful, and why? When is a ring sling most useful, and why? Mei tai? What about a wrap?

bamboo

We used the ring sling from birth-about 10 weeks I think. We also used a fleece pouch in that time period, and I would have kept using it but it got too hot. I can't wait for fall to use the fleece pouch again. I would have continued to use the ring sling exept my daughter got pretty heft pretty fast, and with the warm weather she just got awfully sweaty even in the cotton sling. In the Moby, the air can circulate so she doesn't get as hot.

At around 8 weeks we broke out the Moby, and within a week or two I was using it exclusively. It's still the only one we're using now (at 4 months). I love love love it. I am now lusting after a mei-tei though, and will hopefully get one soon. I am still happy with the Moby, but I just want some variety.

I've used the pouch and the ring sling literally since DS was born. I'm still trying to interest him in the mei tai.

ring sling: birth through about 8-9 months (about 20 pounds), to me this was most useful when i wanted to nurse discreetly because the tail was a good coverup. also useful when baby was light enough that her weight didnt pull me down.

pouch: 8-9 months (20 pounds) through now but for quick trips only, not long walks. both this and the ring sling are just uncomfortable to me with a heavy baby, it throws my weight off to the side and kills my back and hips. i like this for running in to the store or something. oh and ive only used the hip carry with a pouch, not the other carries.

mei tai: 9-10 months through now, would have started sooner but i didnt have one til 9-10 months. its most useful for long walks or outings where i need her weight distributed evenly so im not in pain. also most useful at the moment because it doesnt interfere with the giant preggo belly im sporting these days ;). i plan on using one with the new baby when he is born. in our house this is also the most dh-friendly carrier. he is ok with the fleece pouch but asking him to wear a ring sling is like asking him to put on makeup and wear a dress. it just aint happening. but he is all about the mei tai (could be because i had one in a "husband-approved" fabric).

wrap: i plan on using this with the new baby. a friend has been using one with her 6 month old since birth, she pretty much wears him all day as she chases after her 3yo and it seems to be working really well for her. when i tried on my wrap it was so comfortable, i could see myself wearing one all day and popping the baby in and out as needed.

I just have to say I love, love, LOVE my new Mei Tai from Rosie baby (http://www.rosiebaby.com/)! It's BEAUTIFUL and DD loves it! Right now she hates the ring sling and my Hotslings pouch but when I put her in the Mei Tai she gets all smily. :) Thanks Nancy!

Shannon, you know me so well. :) This is totally a vanity question for me. I am going to force my baby to stay in that ring sling for at least another year or two because it's pretty and I LIKE it, dangit!

Hey all, I don't normally post over here, but I have a question. My GF is having her second child in the next few weeks and I sent her a ring sling to help her out (first child is 1). SO, she's tons of nerves about learning all the positions, and being able to nurse with it on. I've sent her the link to here, but I don't know if she'll come. I was wondering if there are any of you in the LA area that may be open to some teaching. Like if I could give her your email and if she has questions that just can't be answered online or if she needs a practice in real life, maybe you could help her?? I live in PA and so I can't get there to show her. Anyone comfortable with idea enough to PM me? Or email me? ritaschnabel@hotmail.com. Thanks in advance!!

blessed02 thanks for posting your question because I was thinking of asking the same thing but you did it much better than any way I could think of!

nancy drew thanks for your extremely helpful answers -- what kind of wrap do you plan on using, or does your friend use? (all I can think of is the ultimate baby wrap - are there others out there?)

I want to babywear from day one and I am having a hard time trying to pick out what to have on hand when I don't know anything about my or my baby's preferences yet... so thanks for the comments.

was actually thinking of taking a babywearing class on 9/15 and borrowing somebody else's baby who shows up -- then again I have a big ol' belly and I'm not going to be able to practice any of the front carries very well...

Side/hip carry with the mei tai. Where do the straps end up on the opposite shoulder? They seem to end up right on my neck. :( Does baby have arms in the MT or over the fabric? I haven't felt very well and find it difficult to practice, and the practice sessions are short, and I just can't figure it out. Plus, the printed out instructions the seller included are almost unreadable.

Duh, maybe they are online...

matryoshka i have an ellaroo wrap (http://store.peppermint.com/ellaroo-wrap.html), which i got in a trade :) my friend used an ellaroo wrap with her baby as well, though she also uses a storchenwiege (http://www.cottoncradles.com/storchenwiege.htm) which i have tried on and i reeeeeeeeeeeally like and may have to splurge on if i find that the wrap works well for us. another friend adored her hug-a-bub (http://www.cottoncradles.com/hugabub.htm) and was able to use it with her daughter until she was about 2 years old. that one is a stretchy wrap, so some people feel it doesnt work well for older/heavier babies as it can stretch too much. the moby wrap (http://www.cottoncradles.com/mobywrap.htm) is another stretchy (and reasonably priced) wrap that people love for their newborns and little ones, but tend to use less as the baby gets older and heavier. but then again there are people who say that the stretchy wraps are just fine for older kids so i think its all a matter of personal preference. the ellaroo and storchenwiege are woven wraps, so they have a tiny bit of give and stretch, but not so much that your baby ends up down at your knees ;) i know there are other wraps out there as well hut those are the ones i know best.

babywearing class is a great idea, but i do think it works better when you have a baby ;) our instructors use baby dolls, and im sure you would be able to borrow a doll or something at your class, but a real baby is kinda better. is there a class after your baby is born? you can buy a sling or whatever or two and use them as best you can until the next class after your baby is born. if you have an AP (attachment parenting) group near you you can join and attend meetings or playgroups and i am sure someone would be able to help with sling stuff there. also la leche meetings are a good place to check for sling help.

molly try this link (http://www.rosiebaby.com/wearinginstructions.htm) or this one (http://www.kozycarrier.homestead.com/instructions.html#anchor_64) for hip carry instructions. i thought it would never work at first but it totally did. and it was easier than i thought it would be. :)

molly try this link (http://www.rosiebaby.com/wearinginstructions.htm) or this one (http://www.kozycarrier.homestead.com/instructions.html#anchor_64) for hip carry instructions. i thought it would never work at first but it totally did. and it was easier than i thought it would be. :)

Thank you for those links, by the way. I was able to figure things out, and got a better "grip" wearing him at the festival last Friday. There's still something wrong, though...could be inexperience, could be the way my shoulders are, could be the straps on the mei tai, could be the shape of the body of the MT (it's lightweight and doesn't quite look the same as other MTs)...could be a combo...but I'm ending up with the straps cutting into my neck no matter which way I carry E (OK, he refuses a back carry, so I'm only doing hip and front), with hip carry being infinitely more into my neck. But from the links you showed me I made the MT less to the front and more evenly on my side, which helped with the straps' positioning, so thank you!

I'm probably in the minority, but I only have 3. A bjorn, a ring sling, and a mei tai.

Speaking of the mei tai... I posted this before, but then forgot all about it, what with it being summer and too hot to have a toddler wrapped up in fabric stuck to me (I don't care how light the fabric is, any extra fabric is too much when it's 100+ out!).

I have the rosiebaby mei tai, which I LOVE. But, I'm not so proficient at the back carry yet. I never feel like I've got Noah really secure in it, and find myself leaning forward to comensate for his weight. Any tips to getting him more snug on my back? I don't practice much, since it's been so hot, and because I can't really figure out a good way to get him snug, plus I'm at home alone with him most of the time, so it's hard to get him in there. Thanks.

Wait, I don't have to count the Bjorn, do I? The Bjorn totally doesn't count!

I have 2 silk ring slings and a pouch that doesn't see much use because it's too hot for the Texas summers. So, er, surely that one doesn't count either... does it? I'm eyeing a Hotsling. Usually when I start eyeing something this covetously, I end up blacking out or something because somehow it just ends up showing up in the mail one day.

So I'm holding steady at 2-and-a-half, plus 2 that don't count. :)

Can I get some informed opinions? My mom and cousin sent me a NoJo sling. Can anyone tell me the pros/cons of a NoJo sling? I've been looking around online and I was thinking that I wanted a pouch Hotsling, but ordering it is a major pain for me because I have to deal with international shipping or else ask my mom or cousin to get it for me and then forward it on. And then if fit is an issue, returning is the same hassle in reverse. Baby hasn't been born yet, so I guess I could wait and deal with it later, but I'm hoping that I'll be just fine with the NoJo. My in-laws think the whole thing is beyond weird, they keep telling me, OK to use that thing in the house I guess, but not outside. Um, it's my kid, I'll do what I want, thanks for your opinion! They've seen baby bjorns and so they're OK with that, but the sling thing is having the weirdest effect on them. Can't wait for baby to get here so that we can start to have the unwanted opinion fest on *every* topic...

Hi Gals...
I just received my beautiful rosiebaby Mei Tei a couple days ago, we've been practicing with the front carry, and have the baby facing in working fine- but does anyone carry their baby facing out using it? My son is 6 months old and loved riding in the Bjorn facing out, but man that thing was killing my back.

Brady: I've worn DS in my Rosiebaby facing out, which he likes, but I've heard it's not something you're "supposed" to do (per the NYC Babywearers group.) I'm not sure why, actually. He doesn't like to be carried facing in, but we're working on it.

I have a Rosie Baby mei tai, too, but I'm wondering about bigger babies. We went on a tike hike last week and I wore my DS in the mei tai facing in because it was his nap time and I *knew* he'd fall asleep. FTR, he's 7 mos and about 23 lbs. I think he's getting too old to have his feet/legs all scrunched in if I try to face him out, but the carrier is wide at the bottom and I don't think it would be comfortable to have his legs that wide facing out. Or am I wrong?? Nancy, what do you think?? He's at the age now, too that he wants to watch everything, so I think facing out might be more fun for him...

Next question is if it doesn't work facing him out in the mei tai, what carriers out there are available for facing out? Any??

I hate to bug Nancy Drew because I know she's about to have a baby, but I have a Rosie Baby, too, and when I took it to a babywearing meeting, everyone told me the blanket was way to wide for me (I'm pretty thin.) DS kind of leans back and struggles in it. He has too much room in there no matter how tightly I tie it. We keep trying, but so far he's not really a fan (which may have more to do with the type of carrier and less with the blanket--he's a one-shoulder fan.) I have noticed that all the other mei tais I've seen (Saachis, etc.) have much smaller blankets. Is anyone else having a problem with the width of the carrier?

tonya if it isnt nap time, you could try him on your hip or back. you probably wouldnt want him falling asleep like that but for walking around it might be fine.

roseanne i have heard that some people feel the carrier is too wide. i know i used a smaller one when stella was younger but when she got to be about 14 months old i felt it was *too* small so we started using a bigger one (probably like the one you have) and it worked better. if you want to exchange yours for a different one PM me (so we dont take up too much space in the thread) and we can figure something out. i have a smaller one here that i could send out soon if you like the fabric, or i could easily make a smaller version for you. :)

Brady Here is a picture of DS facing out in the Mei Tai that I made myself. I fold down the bottom part around my waist to make the carrier a little smaller and then put his arm and head out the top. I have carried DS the way Chylynn does it too, but I get worried about the fabric being around his neck (I just weird I guess).

I have a zolowear sling and although I love it, I saw a woman using a Moby Wrap at my bf group and it looked like something I would like to try. If you have the Moby, what's the learning curve like? Will it take me forever to get how to use it? BTW, DD is almost 10 weeks old.

I just got a used Hug A Bub, which is very similar to the moby, except for the fabric. It took me about ten mins to figure out, after watching the video. I have a lot of experience with slings and carriers, but I think it's pretty easy, anyway.

the HAB is much more $$$ than the moby, but very similar. I was just saying that if it only takes a minute to learn the HAB, the moby should be the same.

Sarah The HAB is awesome isn't it I bought a HAB used as well but they did not have the video - if I got you a video tape would you mind copying it for me or letting me borrow it? I PROMISE to return it - I just want to make sure I am doing it right.

I started learning the usual MobyWrap wrap with big huge pieces of fabric, getting the idea from mamatoto.org. So by the time I got my Moby, which is actually tapered at the ends (unlike my big fabric) it was like heaven! :) I don't think it takes *that* long to learn. I learned over the course of a couple of festivals. :)

Woohoo for the mei tai! We went to So. CA this week, and I comfortably carried Eamon for quite a while around Disneyland in the mei tai! I've never given him much chance to like facing out, so at nearly 16 months he's still happy to flirt with the people behind me as I wear him facing my chest. :) We were both so comfy. And we'd even rented a stroller there, as a *just in case* measure. Eh, 8 bucks for a bag carrier isn't so bad. :D

I am due with baby #2 in January so am thinking of getting a KKFP but now I see the hotslings pouches. Any suggestion on which is better?
Also someone mentioned in this thread how the fleece doesn't need a padding around the edge - how come? Is padding good or bad?

Question that I'm SURE is answered somewhere, but I don't know where. I would like to get a new carrier for DS. We have a fabu ring sling from funkygiraffe and lOVE it, but he's getting a bit big for it for my comfort. He's 31 inches tall and 25 lbs or so. Any suggestions? I'm currently in love with the idea of mei tai's but don't know if I could do a back carry...I use my sling for hip carries a lot, but mostly have been putting him in a stroller cause I'm out shopping and need my hands, or he gets too heavy sometimes. SO, any suggestions??

i dont have a hotslings pouch but i have a KKAFP and i love it. i have used it all summer while i was pg to carry stella, mostly just to and from the car or around a store, but i never really felt it was too hot. i like that it is adjustable so DH can use it too. plus it is a DH-friendly carrier, no tail or pretty fabrics to make it feminine.

fleece doesnt need padding because it is soft and stretchy. the padding helps soften the edge of the fabric where the baby's leg is. woven cotton fabrics can leave red marks on a baby's legs, but with fleece that doesnt really happen.

I have a hotslings pouch but drool over the kangaroo pouches all the time. :)

lady...I use my mei tai for front and hip carries often. Front, most often, actually. I've never gotten DS used to look forwards, so he's perfectly content to flirt with the people behind me as he would be with the people in front. :) Anyway, you don't have to use the mei tai for a back carry. My guy is 16 months, at least 32 inches tall, and I can't get a good reading for his weight on my scale (hmm, perhaps it's time for another ND appointment, so I can get his weight?)...but as I mentioned earlier, he was in a front carry in his mei tai at Disneyland last week, and it was great. Of course, if I'd known the weather was going to be cold with torrential downpours (in Sept. in Anaheim?) I'd have brought my Moby and it would have been even better! :D

Hmm. I have a:
KKAFP
HAB
Kozy
Maya
Hip Hammock
Hotsling pouch
Bjorn
and I used to have a Nojo.

If you are getting uncomfortable with the Maya, I would probably go for the Mei Tai. The fleece pouch is great, too, but as he grows you may feel more comfortable with a 2-shoulder carry, like the ABCs offer. I carried my DD (and still could, if she would let me) in a fleece pouch though, and she is three and about 30 lbs.

Looking for advice on pouches for DH...

If your DH uses a pouch, which one? I'm looking for one with a good fit for him, and one that comes in colors like solid blue or black.

TIA!

My DH and I were both able to use the New Native pouch when Joey was a newborn. Since it's not adjustable, you'd just have to measure and get the correct size. But since it's not adjustable, it's also just one easy step -- pop baby inside. :)

My husband always preferred the Maya, but he sounds like an anomaly (in so many ways :)). I would recommend an adjustable pouch that you could share, like the KKAFP or the cotton version.

My good friend's ex-DH just sent her a Didymos from Germany and she isn't planning on using it and is sending it to me. Any other users out there? She's also sending a dvd on how to use it, but it's in german. I'm sure the images will still help, but I am more of a reader when following directions. I can't wait to get it and I'm sure I'll be back her with tons of questions for you guys.

Wow, lucky! An *ex* is sending her a Didymos? Here's (http://store.peppermint.com/didymos.html) the page where you can see how nice it was of the ex to send that, and for you to be receiving it (in case you didn't know), and here's (http://www.peppermint.com/girasolcarry.htm) a page with some instructions.

mei tai...I got mine from placidbaby.com...I'm still not sure if I'm madly in love with it, but it got us through Disneyland. :D Also the one I have is a light, summer-fabric mei tai and the body doesn't have much heft or weight to it. A normal-weight one would likely look like all the others on the market.

Thanks, mollyeilis! I didn't know too much about the Didymos until she told me about the gift a few weeks ago. Her ex is German and they parted amicably. I can't wait to get it and try it out. She says that the fabric is very autumnal, perfect for right now!

I made my ring sling and we love it! The only pic I have is a fussy one since he was hungry and being on the second day of using it I still take a while to shift it to feed him. It is really comfy, and if I shift it around to help DH get comfy he can wear it.
I am thinking about making one for DH that is dark blue and putting some black and silver silk at the end of the tail.

Can anyone help me?

I first ordered a size 3 hotsling and once I got it was obvious it was too big. So I exchanged it for a size 2. I got that yesterday and I think it may still be a bit big. When I have DS in the kangaroo carry his butt is about 3 inches below my belly button and in the hip carry he seems so unsecured even with the shoulder flip. He can lean way back and he is right at my hipbone.

Do you think I have the right size? Here are my stats 5'2'', 34C (sometimes D), 114, and the shoulder length is 22 inches.

So what do you think?

Marisa
10-13-2005, 07:09 AM
Tenny, I think you do still have the wrong size, unfortunately. In a kangaroo carry he should really be up much higher.

My hotslings size would probably be a 2, and I'm about 2 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier than you.

I just scenned throught the tread...I dont' have time to read it all, so please excuse me if I've missed it.

We are going to Mexico in a month with our 11 month old DD, probably 21-22 lbs. Would a mei tai work well? I am looking at back pack carriers and they are just so big to travel with. Between the car seat and the pack n play, I am trying to cut down and luggage.

Thanks!

Ashley, I feel like Im stalking you between here and LJ. LOL;)

I also have a question for all you slinging mommas, especially those moms with 2 kids close in age.

My DD is 11 months old and she weighs around 17 lbs. I am currently almost 10 weeks pregnant with #2 due in late May. Heres my question:

Im a little dissapointed that I wont be able to use my Kangaroo Korner Fleece pouch this winter with Lily because I will be pregnant. Can you wear a baby while pregnant? I just dont think it would be all that comfy or worth it. Im sad because that is favorite of all favorite slings. The baby is due in May and well, its close to the 90s here(we live in Texas) then so I definately will not be able to use it for the new baby.

I guess my question is if you or anyone you know of wore their toddler while pregnant? Im assuming the best way would be the hip carry?

Also, I need a good sling that is breathable and comfy for the new baby so I can actually get out of the house and do grocery shopping with the 2 of them. Anyone know if the cotton adjustables are as comfy as the fleece?

TIA to everyone who has any suggestions.

Hi everyone! I am coming into the home stretch of my first pregnancy (and due to some unexpected circumstances the baby may be making his/her appearance sooner rather than later!) I really want to get a pouch for the little one and love the idea of one that is reversible. I found sidecar slings on the babywearer.com website but there were no reviews. Has anyone ever used this product before? What is your experience with them? Another choice is a hotsling that I know most people love. Thanks for your help. After the baby arrives, I am sure I will be here more often!
