My apartment got a makeover yesterday... literally. One new couch and $240 worth of accesories later... everything looks great! Except... still not sure what to put over the fireplace. Ideas please! What do you have over your fireplace???

I used to have a map of Long Island over the fireplace, but I had taken it down when I put the Christmas wreath up last year. When I took the wreath down, I put a picture that I had used over my sofa in my townhouse up there just to keep it off the floor until I figured what I wanted to do with it... and my husband said that he liked it much better than the map in that spot. So we rearranged pictures. It's one of those long, rectangular pictures.

I have a mirror similar to this PB set vertically over my fireplace -

I also have a crystal vase (always full of flowers :) ), silver candle sticks, a blue glass plate I just bought on my trip to Venice, and a small framed painting of Venice (the frame matches the mirror's).

DH had the clock hanging there before I moved in. We added the little shelves later as I felt we needed a mantle of some sort. The clock doesn't work and weighs a million pounds, but it looks good in that spot. :p

We have one of those insets for a television. However, we have a big screen that will not exactly fit up there ;) FH has put all the stereo/dvd equipment up there right now, but I'd like to get a small divider screen to hide it all.
I can't find one that's small enough though (they are all so far the large ones for dividing a room). I might have to end up making one :)

This was over our mantle when B moved in, but he didn't like "The Big Dark Thing" hanging over the fireplace, so he took it down and hung it in the entryway. We think it's pretty cool, but it is dark, so a friend of my mother's is refinishing it for us (lightening it up a bit), and then it will go back up over the mantle:

KJH - I actually like your "darK" wood mirror... it looks like nothing you could find anywhere anymore... kind of "old world."
Leslie - same goes for the clock - kind of "old world." I wouldn't mind finding something along those lines... maybe a piece of wrought iron art or something... hmmm...
Daisy - Love the mirror. I was originally going to go for a big mirror, but to the left of our fireplace is a large tv, and I just don't think have two big "squares" next to each would look good... kind of competing with each other. Otherwise, I think a mirror would be the way to go, and I love yours. I bet it looks great in your house!
Camberne - I like the idea of framed art. I even think the map idea sounds interesting and different. On the note of interesting and different, if I did go with art, I think it would have to be something creative, not "square." I am considering something like a wrought iron spiral votive "sconce" type of thing... I know PB carries one, and I think Target has a knock off... we'll see!
I love seeing what everyone has put up above their fireplaces! Anyone else?

A family friend took our wedding invitation and a picture of us leaving the reception and framed them, and the mat color she used matches perfectly with the tile around our fireplace, so we hung it up there. On the mantle we have a couple of tealight candle lamps, a mantle clock, and stuffed llamas named Hubert and Gwendolyn (long story). :) I thought I had a picture, but it doesn't have wedding invitation in it...I'll try to take another one later.
We have a large picture hanging over the fireplace. I also have crystal candlesticks and a vase on the mantle.
Jeepgirl - the wrought iron spiral votive things are nice. I want one, but DH seems to think that hanging 'twisted metal' is silly. Then again, this is the same man who wants to hang a flat screen above the fireplace b/c it is his version of art.

We have an oval mirror - I chose oval because everything about our fireplace and the built-ins is so square. Here's the mirror in our old house:

Fortunately it juuuust fit above our fireplace in the new house - with only millimeters to spare. It's a Pottery Barn mirror.

Here is our fireplace. Excuse the mess, we aren't quite finished with this room yet. I've had this mirror since I was in high school. It's an antique that a friend of my parents gave me.

I have a 28 x 32 framed print (woman reading) sitting on my mantle flanked by an white orchid & pineapple candle on one side and a grouping of 3 candles in various heights (rustic burgandy, sage & gold) & a pineapple shaped candle snuffer on the opposite side. I'll forego mentioning any dust.

I have a few things. The larger painting was supposed to be hung, but I propped it for the short-term. 2 years later, it's still propped, but I think I like it like that. I'll probably hang it at some time, because after looking at this picture, the arrangement may be lacking some height!

funny you should ask - we just hung the 8' white marlin that DH caught on our cruise in Cozumel - it looks great! (I was sweatin' it though ;) )

The pictures are all from our wedding, and on the left is our cake topper, then our wedding glasses that I am going to be filling with sand and green votives (because our wedding was green/yellow) and I plan to spray paint the candle holder black, I just haven't had time to do that yet.

We have a huge mirror that the sellers left us. It's actually framed in oak that matches the built-in entertainment center cabinetry but I don't like it much. When we have enough money saved, we plan to buy a flat-screen and hang it above the fireplace. If we have a lot of money saved, then I'd love to buy something "high-tech" like a "motorized" framed artwork that glides up when you feel like watching and then glides back down and hides the TV when you're done. I saw something like that on some HGTV show and it takes care of the "eyesore" of having a tv above the fireplace.

This is what we have above our fireplace. The painting was done by my cousin as a wedding present. The bottle next to the painting is the first bottle of wine we had when we got to Italy for our honeymoon. :) ***please ignore the cat food...our kittens were too small at that point to get down the steps to where we now keep it  ***

A print we bought while on vacation this summer, which I had triple matted and framed. It's about 30"x36", so it really fills up the space.

We own one piece of "art" that DH's father bought for him years ago, and it hangs centered above our fireplace. It's quite an interesting painting, and it looks very nice up there. It's not very large, however, and so I have a couple of meaningful items arranged on the fireplace mantel to "frame" it.
You can see it here (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1027287&postcount=246), although perhaps not very clearly.

JustHB: That's gorgeous! Do you have a Craftsman/Prairie Style House? I love the beautiful built-ins and the woodwork.Yup, a 1916 modified Craftsman. I say "modified" because over the years it was "updated" and some of the Craftsman features were removed or painted over. It's strange because while the front (inside) half of my house is very much Craftsman, the exterior looks like something you'd find in the Gulf States and the back (inside) half is cottage style.
