View Full Version : Cribs: Wood or Spring Platform?

We're trying to decide on a crib for our baby who is due in December. I've read Baby Bargains and learned that Delta's cribs come with a wood mattress platform instead of a spring platform. Two of the beds we really like are made by Delta and have wood platforms. We looked at different cribs in person and the wood platform makes me nervous. I also read a review where someone said that the cheap wood might not be sturdy or safe for a toddler. What do you think? Which type of platform does your baby's crib have? Do you like it?
TIA!
We bought a Pali crib which also has the wood platform. We don't have a child sleeping in there yet, but it is very sturdy. We have no room right now in the nursery, so have been piling all of our baby gifts in there and those definitely have some weight to them. I don't have any hesitation about using it with an older child. I'm guessing we'd go to a twin size bed between ages 2-3, and plan to use the crib until then.

I was concerned with a child jumping up and down in the crib and the wood not holding the impact (or weakening over time and then breaking), so we went with a spring mattress support system. Our crib hasn't arrived yet and neither has our baby, so I can't give any more info.

That's my concern too. I'm curious to see if anyone has any older babies that have tested this.

My son does jump up and down in his crib and I have also had to climb into his crib to help settle him down for sleep. I would not trust a wood platform to support him, they were just too flimsy when I saw them before. I feel very safe with the springs that we have now.

Hum, I guess I never really thought about in that sense. But I'm still happy with our choice. If it were truly a safety issue, then cribs would have to be sold with the spring support. Those wood slats are strong, but if I were the least bit concerned about one manufacturers quality I would not trust wood over springs.
we originally wanted a Pali crib also and were told that all new Pali cribs would be made w/ wood platforms. so, we decided against it for all the same reasons that the ladies have mentioned already. but i also think that if they were a safety issue, why would they even make them? i guess you just need to take a look at the platform and see how sturdy it really is and decide from there.
I just looked in my baby bargains book and Delta says that wood platforms are better for baby's back. I don't buy into that either. With the crib mattress in there, you can't even feel the platform, wood or spring.

Is the wood platforms a new Pali thing? Because we have a Pali crib (bought in 2003) and it's got a spring platform.
emschwar , if i remember correctly, we looked early 2004 (dd born in 5/04) and the guy told us that any new Palis moving forward (including the one would've ordered) would have wood platforms. so i'm guessing starting in 2004ish is when they were going to start w/ the wood. BUT that's what we were told, never followed up with that really so I can't say for sure sure.

Interesting. I guess I avoided that problem by buying an in-stock pali in 11/03 :) I can't imagine why they'd switch to wood. That seems like it would make the pali line seem much less high-end and lower quality.
oddly enough, the sales guy said they were switching to wood b/c it was more durable. This was at Great Beginnings where we bought our crib (mentioning b/c, if I remember correctly, from the scrapbooking thread, you're in MD. I'm in NoVa)

If I remember correctly, I think it was in the older version of the BBB that they recomment spring is best support/better sleeping for the infant/toddler vs. would that doesn't really have any give.
