View Full Version : Crescent Roll Packages

DH and I just got home from doing our large shopping trip, and as we were putting things away, a question arose. You see, I have an irrational fear of opening refridgerated roll packages-- you know, like the Pillsbury crescent rolls. It's so bad that my heart starts racing, and I'm nearly crippled at the thought of even attempting to open a container. In my 30 years, I've opened only two packages, both in the last two weeks, because DH made me do it. For the record, each time it took me about five minutes to open the package from start to finish. Of course, DH thinks this is hilarious, but I think other people have this fear too. So, do you?

I actually think it's kind of fun. What scares you about it?

I wouldn't call it a fear... i'd liken it to the anticipation of a jack in the box popping out. I know it's going to happen and i anticipate it but it still startles me!

I voted other because i don't think it's weird or you're a wuss. We're all entitled to our fears. If this scares you and you're willing to try and overcome it then you're a very brave person. Plenty of people have fears of things that others think are irrational. Clowns don't scare me but they frighten my husband. I don't understand his fear and he doesn't understand why i'm afraid to be home alone over night.

I like the pop sound :)

I think it's the sound coupled with the actual mini-explosion of the container opening. When they first came out on the market, I remember them being very explosive when you opened them. They've tamed down a bit, but it still makes me break out in rash (literally) to open a package.

Goodness, I thought I was the only one! :o I usually make DH open them, but when he's not around, it usually is an ordeal for me. It's totally the anticipation. I usually shut my eyes and wince while I wait for it to pop open!

Then it's kind of mean for your husband to make you open them.

I HATE opening those things. I always wind up having to use a spoon because I tear it weird. And agghh, my skin is crawling just thinking about the popping.

I think he's trying to have me face my fear or something. There are a few other things that freak me out (fire-- I'm so bad I can't even hold a kid's 4th of July sparkler, and DH totally respects that fact. He's never made me deal with one head on). I think he sees it as as ellidew described it and thinks I just startle too easily.

Nope, they don't bother me at all.

Doesn't freak me out that badly, but I don't like to open them. It scares me, too.

Do you startle easily? I'm just curious.

Actually, not really. I'll jump sometimes during movies (usually scary ones) but not that easily...

Hmm... maybe that's my problem. I startle very, very easily. In fact, I've been "escorted" out of haunted houses because my startle reaction is so violent that I've broken things or scared employees. Heck, I've even launched my hair dryer at DH when he popped out from behind a wall once.

It startles me, but I know it's not going to kill me or anything, so it doesn't bother me.

This one time we went to Hooters and I wanted a balloon. The Hooters girl was afraid of the helium machine.

i haven't bought them in ages, but i'm totally afraid to open them -- i startle very easily, too. champagne bottles are the same for me, i refuse to open those.

Oh thank God I'm not the only one LOL I've been scared of those damn packages since I was a kid... but the biscuits and crescents are so delish that I just have to face my fear (or usually just make DH open them :D)

I voted the obligatory other. They don't go so far as to scare the crap out of me, but I know where you're coming from . It does have that kind of jack-in-the-box type thing going on and THOSE do scare the crap out of me!

Wrap it in a towel and then give it a good smack on the counter. It should help alleviate your fear.

i always wince and flinch a little when opening them. I am okay when they open while tearing the paper, but its when they don't open completley and i have to force it open that i HATE!

My obligitory other is that I used to be in your shoes, but now I'm ok with it. I hate loud popping noises (you should see me when balloons are in peril...) but I think they don't pop as loud anymore, so I'm ok with it now :D I get made fun of for my startle reflex at times, but I figure the easier you startle probably the stronger your survival instinct :p

I'm kind of the same way as the OP. I also cringe when I hear balloons pop. I was always the little girl crying at birthday parties during the "Sit on the Balloon" game.

I voted No, but I don't think you're weird or a wuss. We all have our irrational fears.

I also actually kind of enjoy opening them too. But fwiw, I voted no, but I don't really think you're a wuss. I think we all have slightly irrational fears so enjoy yours.

And I personally wouldn't actively work to overcome that fear -- why can't your husband just be the one who opens them? It's not like not being able to open them is going to hold you back in life or anything.

I don't like it, but I think the anticipation is worse than the actual pop that the package makes.

LOL, LOL, LOL...That is so me as well! For some reason I too hate opening those darn things.

I do not buy them. But I also do not think you are weird or a wuss. As a pp said, everyone has their fears/phobias. Yours may be more unusual but not better or worse than my irrational fear of ants.

FWIW, exposure therapy is the best thing (research speaking) for phobias. If you can go through it, more power to you. otherwise, I would give my DH the packages to open or stop eating them.

I hate opening them, too. It's mostly the anticipation. It's not like it's going to explode or anything, but it still freaks me out. Put me in the camp that hates the sound of balloons popping.

I don't mind opening them at all, but I usually don't have to. My DDs (ages 3 and 5) always fight over opening them so I make them take turns!

I LOVE to open these!

I hold it by the end and bang it real hard on the edge of the counter. BAM! Pops right open! Fun!

I voted other, it doesn't scare me but when it does "pop" I do jump everytime. Weird I know because I know what is coming...

But, it seems like i have to fight with the darn package EVERY single time!

They do freak me out too. I love crescent rolls but do not buy them because of this. I let my mom buy and make them when we go over to her house for dinner. And yes, I startle very easily.

You're totally a wuss. :p

I think the anticipation of the package popping is the worst. It's like the glaucoma machine at the eye doctor. That anticipation of that stupid puff of air is worse than the actual thing.

It doesn't bother me. Most of the time they don't open when I peel back the wrapper (like they used to back in the day), and I like banging them against the counter to pop them.

It was fun when they opened on their own...like a Jack-n-The-Box when you never knew when the scary clown was going to pop up.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who hates opening those things. I, too, startle easy and it's the worst when I'm expecting it and I don't know exactly when it's coming.

I've also noticed that they don't open as easily as they used. So now you have to add the annoyance factor on.

FWIW, I'm also scared of balloons popping.

I can never get the darn things to open (maybe b/c I buy the store brand?). Anyway, if you slit with a knife and then twist, they don't make noise :).

IIt's like the glaucoma machine at the eye doctor. That anticipation of that stupid puff of air is worse than the actual thing.

OMG, this is the only part of the eye exam that I can't stand...I always squint because I know it's coming...and hit my head on the machine because I jump.
