Living in Utah, this was all that was on last night. He was such a neat person whether you are LDS or not. He will be missed but I am so happy for him that he finally got to go, I think he has been ready to join his wife for a very long time.

Oh yes. That is one thing that I think we can take solace in. They were so in love and he really started to go downhill after her passing. They were married for over 65 years when she passed and it was like he truly lost a part of himself.

Most of my father's side of the family are LDS, and I know this has been a great loss for them. My condolences.

He seems to have led the LDS Church through some major changes in its history, and done so with grace. While I have to say he did some things with which I, as a total outsider, disagreed, he always seems to have done everything in a spirit of honesty. He was a great leader. I hope he has now joined his family in the Celestial Kingdom.

I saw this, though I admit I know very little about the man. He lived a full life though, and it sounds like he had been suffering in recent years, so I hope he has found peace in passing from this world.

I might have expected this, since we get protesters all the time at conference, but I was shocked....

The Westboro Baptist Church holds an anti-Mormon stance. This became especially evident when WBC announced plans to picket the funeral of Gordon B. Hinckley, the fifteenth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hinckley died on January 27, 2008, at the age of ninety-seven. In a flyer released on January 28, the WBC stated that, “God Hates Fags! & Fag-Enablers! Ergo, God hates Hinckley and the Mormon hierarchy and all Mormons without exception. All such go to Hell. Gordon Hinckley is in Hell. Without the least doubt, this fraudulent old fool has pulled his last Mormon political trick, and lied to his last dumb proselyte. Anybody who believes and preaches that, ‘As man is, God once was; and as God is, man will become,’ knows nothing of salvation by the blood of Jesus Christ.”

LDS - That makes me sick. I can stomach the second paragraph, because, sadly, I've heard that kind of stuff before. Hello, living in the Bible Belt! But to picket at the man's funeral? That infuriates me.

Those people know no boundaries. I wonder how they would feel if when Fred Phelps passes if someone does the same to them?

I think they just need a funeral to picket. They're frustrated by the fact that they couldn't get all of their people to Australia to picket Heath Ledger's funeral so this one's just as good, in their eyes.

They are horrible, horrible people.

That is so true. I am from Topeka, KS...home of the Phelps clan. :( They picket anything and everything. They picket HS graduations, including the year I graduated, in '96...crazy sons of ^%&s. I have seen them picketing w/ children holding obscene signs. It's unbelievable and disgusting.

My condolences on the loss of your spiritual leader.

I meant to com in here the other day. A very good frined of mine is LDS and she and her family are very sad about this news. I can't imagine how hard it must be. I know when the Pope passed away, my husband's family had a hard time with it. It's almost like losing you pastor, as I know Gordon Hinckley Tried so hard to be a spiritual leader to each individual.

But, as pp have said, at least he is with his wife now for eternity. Who could ask for more than to live forever with God and your loved ones :)

Melissa, I was in Topeka for one of my closest friend's weddings and at the church right near hers they were picketing a gay person's funeral. I'm a big city girl, and I felt like I had been around the block...but I was shocked. It was just as you wrote-disgusting.
