View Full Version : Disappointed in Superbowl

Ugh! No offense to Giants fans but crud this Superbowl is going to be so lame. I'm not sure if I want to waste hours of my life watching it. Not that I'm a huge Packers fan...heck they beat the Hawks horribly last week which sucked but Eli in the Superbowl?! Booo!
Is anyone totally disappointed in the forthcoming game like I am? I guess I want the Pats to win, which they most likely will because they're already 14 point favorites now. I'm rambling. Anyway I'm just sad now I have to wait several months before the next season begins :(

Seriously, we may not even watch -- and we're those people with every tv package known to man, the ones who do not leave the house on weekends during football season. But this is just . . . blah.

I know! We recently got this huge 60" lcd TV and now what are we going to watch? LOL :) I guess there is college hoops. Go Cougs!

Well, I'm a BUCS fan and that was NOT gonna happen this season. I'm a Green Bay fan by association too, so was disappointed for Favre today.
Since I feel the Giants were so close to beating the Pats when they were going for the record, I'm happy to see the rematch. I hope the Giants kick their butts. And I'm happy for Eli. Good for him!

I am a HUGE Packers fan, so of course I am disappointed. Brett played like crap today. I feel that the SB is going to be quite boring. I could be wrong.

The Patriots could make history with a win and become the game's biggest flop with a loss. I think that's pretty exciting and I wouldn't miss it!!

I'm hoping for a good game. I'd really like to see the Giants beat the Pats. As Heather stated they came close before. I know a lot of people hate the Mannings but I don't have a problem with them. I think it is kind of cool that Eli and the Giants are headed to the Superbowl.

Count me in as someone who is kind of excited. DH is from NY, so that's a big reason. I also can't wait to see if they can beat the Patriots. It's kind of fun to cheer against the Patriots, IMO. ;)

Like Heather said, I'm excited for Eli - he seems so young! We're Jets fans (which definitely wasn't happening this year), but it's nice to see the Giants in the SuperBowl...and it would be great to see the Patriots crumble and lose!

DH is bummed-he's a lifetime Chargers fan. He HATES Eli Manning because he's a crybaby and whined about playing for the Chargers the year he got drafted. He also hates the Patriots. I couldn't care less personally, but I am bummed for DH. That being said, I'm sure he'll watch anyway.

That is the exact reason why my DH hates Eli too, not that he's a Chargers fan but because he had to whine like a baby. I can't stand him! Of course since I'm also a huge Packers fan I'm still really upset about the game. The Packers can play much better than that, but what can you do now. They had an awesome season compared to the last two so I'm still happy they made as far as they did.
As far as the SB, I could care less who wins. My BIL is a Patriots fan but I'm tired of seeing them win. I'm sure we will watch it just because of tradition but I could really care less. I'm sure I'll find myself rooting for the Pats just because I can't stand Eli!

That's how we feel about Eli too. And then his dad and Peyton were supportive of that crap. Turned me and DH off the whole spoiled, whiny family.

Eh, Eli was (and still is) young. I don't give much weight to things an inexperienced kid did a handful of years ago when he was drafted. If he didn't want to be drafted by San Diego because he didn't feel it was "conducive to his future", eh. It's his prerogative. I'd much rather see him win than Tom Brady. Again.
eta: I know his father, Archie played...I'm aware of the background. Still, I just don't see penalizing the guy for it, especially since I want anyone but the Pats to win.

I'm excited! Even though I'm a complete Colts fan, I'm happy for Eli and the Giants - they're playing some great football right now. As for who I want to win, nothing would make me happier than to see New England's "perfect" season go awry!

Thyme, I am completely with you. My DH and I are ginormous NFL fans, and have always hosted SB parties for the past 5 years. We are contemplating not even watching this one. I can't get behind the Patriots who cheated (who knows what effect this REALLY had on their winning streak), and to say I despise the Giants would be putting it mildly. My Cowboys lost to them a week ago and it still stings. A lot. We may just take DS and go to the zoo or something fun rather than watch the game this year. Very dissapointing! :(

Well that would be sort of true about Eli, but he continues to be a whiny crybaby, so he is pretty hated at our house! :p Plus, coming from a football family, I would think you would be even more aware than most of what is appropriate behavior in a draft situation, etc., even if he was "young".
Go Pats!! :)

We don't always follow in the wisdom of our family's footsteps. (eta: writing from experience... LOL)
Like BusyBee21, I just can't root for a team who got so far ahead because they cheated.
I'd rather cheer for a whining kid who's made some mistakes, and has some growing up to do than a kid who, to me, is a bit cocky, and a cheater. Yeah, cheating is a mistake. But we're talking a team here, and to me it's a big difference than saying you wouldn't play for a particular team. (I don't deny Brady's arm, or his hotness factor...but I don't feel they deserve to be where they are.)

I love all of the naysayers here about the Patriots season. Yes, they cheated ... but in the first quarter of the first game of the season. They were caught, fined and paid their dues. You can't tell me that it gave them an advantage in any way.
Give me a break that they don't deserve to go for an undefeated record or that it is in someway tainted because of what happened earlier this season. And since Tom Brady is not the one who held the video camera, why should he be branded a cheater?

I completely agree with kwsu44. There was an issue in the first quarter of the first game. People need to get over that. I can understand that people are tired of the Pats winning (much the same way that people got tired of the Yankees winning all the time, lol)
And Heather, seriously, who the hell do you support? Your avatar has changed so many times I can't figure out who "your" team is? I know "Gio" is from Wisconsin or something, so that makes you a Green Bay Fan by association, a cat owner by association and a Wisconsinite or whatever by association. Which team is actually "yours"?

I'm a big sports fan, and I think this is going to be a great Superbowl for a lot of reasons--
One, either way, it's going to be historic. If the Pats win, they have their perfect season. If the Pats lose, they lose their perfect season and the Mannings have their two back to back Superbowl wins. Which, even though you may not like Eli, is pretty remarkable.
Two, the Giants and Patriots played in the last game of the regular season and it was a very exciting game, pretty much through the middle of the 4th quarter. I'm not saying the Giants nearly won, but they certainly played with the Pats. Since that game, the Giants have been riding incredible momentum throughout the entire playoffs, winning three games (two where they were pretty strong underdogs) on the road, which is fairly unheard of. This game is a rematch of their last meeting, and I think the Giants are on such a high right now that they might make a game of it this time.
Three, even though I am from the New York area and have been bred since birth to hate all varieties of Boston sports teams (sorry, Pats and Sox fans:D), I do think Tom Brady is amazing. This is the first year that he has had real "weapons" in his receiving corps (Moss and Welker come to mind) and it sort of highlights how much he's been able to accomplish over the last 5 years with sub-stellar talent. This victory could possibly clinch the eventual title of "Greatest QB to Ever Play in the NFL" for him, and that alone makes it worth watching. Even for me, a life-long Boston-hater.
Four, I'm surprised that people are bashing the Giants so much in this thread--no one thought this would be the match-up, and I always thought people appreciated underdogs.
Oh well, people can be disappointed or not, and can watch or not watch, but I think there are a lot of good stories here and that it's going to be a good game.

Which team is actually "yours"?
  Why doesn't this surprise me? It's a game. My goodness, chill out. I support who I like. I have posted I am a BUCS fan, first and foremost. I also made a joke that it wasn't happening for us this season so I was rooting Green Bay. I like Brett Favre, and I have a lot of respect for him and what he's overcome. So yeah, I am a fan and my boyfriend, Gio (quotes not necessary) is a fan from Wisconsin so I rooted for them. SO WHAT? All the while I was writing that if the Giants went to the Superbowl, I wouldn't be disappointed and would look forward to a rematch between the Pats and the Giants. I'm happy for Eli. Big deal. If two teams are playing and it doesn't involve my home team, I'll still root for the one I like better. Or is there some rule written somewhere that you can only have ONE team? And Beth, seriously, why the hell do you even care? It is flattering that you do pay attention to my posts, and oh so many avatar changes (three in months!) though, even if you can't keep the information straight. I repeat: IT'S A GAME. If my team loses I'm going to go for the one I like better in the next games. BIG DEAL. And yeah, I love the cat. Sue me. Wisconsinite by assocation? LOL that's a new one! Not sure where you got that from, but it was funny. Thanks for the laugh!
And since Tom Brady is not the one who held the video camera, why should he be branded a cheater?
He participated. And I don't care if it was the first quarter, of the first game. I don't like them. You like your teams. I like mine. People support who they like, and don't support who they don't like. It's not rocket science.
It's a freakin' game. I'm not on the payroll roster, it doesn't mean so much to me I'm going to get angry over it. I don't like New England. I hope the Giants win. WOW. A lot of other people feel the same, and a lot don't.
Bottom line, I am going to watch the game. There are two teams left. I am going for the one I like better. If the Pats win, good for them.

Yes! Exactly! Tom Brady has been underappreciated for years and it just proves what he was able to accomplish as a QB with limited receiving corps the last few years. The fact that he could win two super bowls (not counting the 2001 SB) with limited receiving talent is a testament to his talent.
I really appreciate that coming from a NY fan!!! :D

I absolutely agree that Tom Brady has been amazing this season - there's no denying that. I am personally not a fan of Bill Belichick or his actions on-field and off. I think he has been incredibly rude to other opposing coaches this season and I just don't think he is a classy guy.
I admit I would get a kick out of it if they blew their winning record at the Super Bowl - I'm just so tired of hearing about them and their "humble pie" nonsense. I also think Tom Brady has been extra smug this year (and I'm not a fan of his off-the field actions either).
So, I will cheer for the Giants along with DH. FWIW I'm not a fan of Eli Manning either (more for his on the field actions), but I'll still root for them. I try not to take it all so seriously and I have fun trash-talking the Patriots from my living room.

01-21-2008, 04:49 PM
Yeah, Belichick is pretty smug and aloof ... I can see how he would rub a lot of people the wrong way.
I think it will be a good game, esp. since the Giants gave the Patriots a run for their money in the last game of the regular season. At one point, the Pats were 12 or 14 points down and came back to win ... so it was definitely exciting.
Maybe I'm biased, but I don't see how Tom Brady has been smug. Anytime any journalist has tried to heap praise on him, he deflects it to another member of his team, saying that he is able to accomplish what he can because of them. I guess I don't see that as being smug.

After the Seahawks were thumped by the Packers, I was hoping the Packers would go all the way. Brett Favre is kind of an emotional favorite for so many. But I'm not too disappointed. I like the Giants, too. They got hot during the playoffs, and that's exciting to watch.
I can't stand the Patriots, though. I figured they'd be in the Superbowl because they've played so well, but Belichick drives me nuts. I really hope they don't win. Most people around here figure most of the country is behind the Giants at this point. I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Well my Steelers had a chance during the wild card and lost so I kind of lost interest (oops). I love pro football and even cheered for my hometown team (Titans) after the Steelers lost. I don't like the Mannings for several reasons and don't really care about Brady. The funny thing is Eli and Tom were my QBs during fantasy football (makes it extremely hard to hate them/cheer against them when you are wanting your FF team to win).
Like Heather said, it's just a game and most people will pick a team even if it isn't their team when it comes to the SB. Me? I have no cheer left in me and will probably watch for the commercials but that's about it.

What to say, what to say...
I think the whole not liking Tom Brady thing has less to do with Tom Brady himself, but rather the commentators who stroke his balls for him. (sorry for the crude visual, but it's the best way of describing it, IMO!) Seriously, the commentators have been SOOOO freaking annoying this year, with all of the talk of the "dynasty" Patriots, and how Brady is untouchable and soooooo amazing.
I said this in the Pats thread, and will say it here. We get it. We know he's a good QB, but the commentators seem to always take it to the next level and I'm so sick of hearing about it! That's not the fault of the Patriots themselves, but do we have to hear about them every Saturday/Sunday/Monday game?
I don't know who I'm cheering for. As a supporter of the AFC (and the Colts, who sucked during the Bolts game), I feel inclined to cheer for the Pats, but I just can't seem to make myself do it! :p Not that the game is contingent on who I'm cheering for or anything. Ha!

Well, I have not watched a lot of his interviews, but he just doesn't seem to have the same attitude that he had the first time he was in the Super Bowl. Every time I see him he has a smug look on his face. I was also not a fan when he did some trash-talking during the Steeler game (which admittedly was started by the Anthony Smith's stupid comments pre-game). Brady used to seem like a pretty happy guy and but now he seems to take himself too seriously IMO.
Cross-posted with TracieB, but I totally agree that the commentators have been so over-the-top with their Tom Brady coverage. It's like enough already!

Just curious... can you explain how Tom Brady particpated in the cheating? He's a cheater because he's the QB of the team?
From what I had read he was aware it was going on and went along with it. Other than when he was speaking on Dennis & Callahan stating he wasn't receiving a feed into his helmet (which isn't a denial of cheating, just a form of it), I've seen nothing stating otherwise. Being that he is one of the team captains, I'd also feel that it made him aware of what was going on. (eta: I'm not saying it guarantees it, I'd just be surprised that the team captains were oblivious.)
A statement from Tom Brady (http://nctimes.com/articles/2007/09/13/sports/professional/chargers/22_20_099_12_07.txt).
I find this is a bit smug, and I guess I find it sad that it was "flattering" to him, and "not a concern" of his considering what the team did. I'd expect better from someone so many people hold in such high acclaim.
I have written several times the guy has an arm, and I do not deny his talent. I do not deny their past success. It does, however, make me question their actions in the past. Maybe they just hadn't been caught at the time. Maybe they were upstanding. The point is, they put their reputation into question in the eyes of a lot of people. I get not all people, but a lot.
There are rivalries in the fandom of football. I don't like the Pats. I didn't like them before the cheating scandal, and yeah, my opinion became stronger after. But had they not cheated, I'd still be rooting Giants.
I enjoy sports in general. It's not just about the teams for me, but about the game. I also don't like the Yankees or Jeter, and I love the Sox! It's not a city by city thing for me. I didn't know people needed permission to root for more than one team a season.

Not that I have a whole lot to add here. I was just sad, because I wanted to see a match up between Favre and Brady. I feel like Brady is the young successful QB, with Favre being the grizzled veteran.
I'm not sure who I'll root for now.
I don't think anyone said people need permission to root for more than one team. Most people just usually are fans of a team for their whole life, or at least a whole season. My DH is from New England. I didn't automatically become a Sox, Pats, or Celtics fan just because we got together.
I assume that those of you who are against the Patriots and/or Brady because of the cheating scandal have also turned against teams/players that have cheated in other sports. Many colleges have had huge cheating scandals, or do those not count because they were usually academic? How about the steroid users? Still fans of them?

Wow, some people are QUITE fired up about some QBs and teams in here. Let's look at the facts, shall we?
--Tom Bradycan you explain how Tom Brady particpated in the cheating? He's a cheater because he's the QB of the team?
Well, if you remember correctly kwsu44, the ENTIRE team was fined in addition to Coach. So, yeah, he's a cheater because he's part of the team. The TEAM loses its draft pick positioning thanks to the action that the TEAM executed. Also, the oh-so-innocent Pats have been accused of this in the past (November 06, Green Bay). To use another example, Marian Jones lost all her Olympic medals because of her drug use. As a result, her relay teammates also had to surrender their medals.
Regardless of this matter, Brady deserves to be there and in my book has sealed his chances of being a Hall of Famer. His social life...well, that's another thing.
Eli: Past whiner? Sure. But I do know that he beat the pants off Favre yesterday in sub-zero weather (and I'm a life-long Packer fan). At this point, I've heard no interviews of Eli whining about weather prior to game time. So, yeah, I guess he was stupid his first year on the job. Does that mean his efforts deem him undeserving of the big game? I think not.
Overall, I think the Bowl will be great! Since the Pack can't be there, I'm psyched to see the Giants give the Patriots a run for their money. May the best team win!

ejs Apparently someone was rather irate that I have had GASP two avatars identifying me as a fan of two different football teams within a week! Then wrote about people and things that have nothing to do with this thread asking "who the hell" MY team is. Actually, I don't have a team. Maybe someday, I'll marry a sugar daddy (you know, if the whole Cancer Biology thing doesn't work out) and he'll buy one for me, though! THEN I'll have a team.
I've been a fan of Green Bay and Favre for years, as already stated several times. It so happens my "SO" (who I mention in every thread, I have a quota you know) is from Wisconsin and yeah, it makes it even more fun to root for them. But I was a fan BEFORE that. I've always been a BUCS fan-even when they didn't win a game for an entire season and sported the ugly brown and orage uniforms-and even though I'm from Miami. Is it okay that I am NOT a Dolphins fan and can't stand Marino? Or is that wrong because I'm from there? SO (oh there's another mention!) is a 'Nole. I can't stand them (eta: in that rivarly sort of way.) I didn't "automatically" get on the FSU bandwagon because I got together with someone.
Not a fan of steroid users. Not a fan of teams who cheat. The 36 players on the 'Noles who were suspended from their Bowl Game deserved it because of what they did. I didn't start disliking the Pats because of the cheating. It just added to my dislike. If Eli and the Giants had done it instead, they'd be bashed by the Pats fans for it.

ok...so we're jets fans in this house, who the patriots played when the whole cheating thing came up. We don't dislike the patriots because of that (although it didn't help), it's more of the rivalry of being in the same division. You get tired of one team always winning, and we totally agree about commentators making things worse. Brady is probably a perfectly nice guy, but it's sickening to hear how good he is constantly (We like to refer to him as the second coming of christ...)

Maybe I shouldn't even post this since I'm not going to search for sources, but when the "cheating" thing happened a lot of the other NFL coaches were pissed....at MANGINI, because he made the NFL keep a closer eye on their tactics. Every team has their own little ways of spying or figuring out the other team's moves. (Like, for example, when a Jets employee was kicked out of Gillette last season for taping the sidelines...hmmm) Belichik just happened to get caught. He and the team paid for it, and still went 18-0 after their tapes were destroyed. Do people really think that made that much of a difference in their season? Do you (general) really think the teams keep the same signals throughout an entire season? Doubtful. I'm not condoning it, but I'm sick of hearing about it. Just like everyone else is sick of hearing about Brady (who, by the way, never takes credit for anything in his interviews)

Oh, Lord. Growing up my fam and I were huge Redskins fans (we lived in the DC area)... Then when we moved to Georgia we became Falcons folks... Of course Jer is a total Carolina Panther and has totally converted me (meow...). But now we live in Chicago and hate the Bears, so cheer for the Packers as our "local" team (don't get the Cats on TV up here, although we're still huge fans and even went to Green Bay to see our Cats get completely embarrassed by the Packers). Well, they lost, and like most people not from Boston (total overgeneralization, but whatev.), we "hate" the Pats (such a strong word).

To a certain poster,
I was just wondering...Does it ever get tiring following people from message board to message board, thread to thread? The veiled jabs and stabs are so transparent and rather old. I get that you are JEALOUS of a lady here, and that is fine. But c'mon. Surely you have better things to do with your time. I guess I was just thinking about here and LJT in the last couple of weeks and it seems that you are always so eager to share the fruits of your wisdom after a certain poster posted in a thread. Is your life so empty that all you have to do all day is follow people around? Do you stay up all night thinking of things to say? I bet you even have a little note pad to make notes to add to your posts. If you need some recommendations on things to do, I can give you some numbers of places that need volunteers.
Or you could call your psychology association and I'm sure they'd be happy to help you! I know they would not want your obsession on the message boards to spill over to real life where you stalk someone there

Andrea and Jessi LOL you two crack me up. Well, you know any sugar daddy of mine will be getting my friends their OWN private jets! And you will have your own suites, built on the level of your choosing, because that's just how I roll. Of course, they'll all be connected with the option of closing them off or keeping them open so we can all get loaded together! And when you leave, the tackiest and gaudiest Harry Winston diamond encrusted football pendants with my team logo for everyone! Unless of course you want Neil Lane or Cartier instead. Hmmm maybe Chanel will sign on to design a team logo purse for me too! Oh and we must have on our wedding rings so no one will mistake us for hookers! I mean really, we wouldn't want that happening now, would we?
Oh yeah-and I'll still go ahead and finish up that PhD. You know, just for show!

Okay, let's get back on topic - The Super Bowl and the two teams that will be playing.

I'll watch, because I'm a fan of the Superbowl in general, not necessarily the two teams playing. Just like I watch the World Series even when my beloved Astros aren't in it. And I watch the BCS National Championship game, even though I really don't like college football at all. I watch because I enjoy the game, not necessarily the teams.
This year I have no idea who I'm rooting for. It would be fun to see the Patriots go undefeated, and it also would be fun to see Eli win the year after his brother did. I'm a sucker for things that break records. (And I am quick to forgive the Pats for their cheating, and Eli for his whining.) So I'll watch, and I'll cheer for whoever I feel like cheering for that day. And (gasp!) I may even switch teams I'm cheering for halfway through the game!

Umm...Karla? that's against the rules and you can't do that.
But, if you want to show your team spirit, you could always just wear blue, and root for both teams at the same time ;)!

My problem with football is that unless a team I like (i.e., the Cowboys) are playing, I usually just cheer for the offense. Because really, the offense is usually who does the cool stuff, you know? So in games like this, where I really don't care who wins, I end up cheering for whoever has the ball for the first little while. Usually by halftime I've picked a favorite team and I'll settle in for the rest of the game. :D

I can totally understand how football fans might be afraid the Super Bowl will be boring. But did you guys see the last Patriots-Giants game?! It was anything but boring. The Giants really had the Pats on the ropes for a while there! It was a great game and a nail biter up until the 4th quarter.
I'm a Pats fan and I hope they win-- it's been an incredible season. But I also want to see some good football, not a trouncing by either side. :)

I saw the last game and frankly I thought the Giants put up a good fight, but so did the Eagles and some other sub par team. It was a regular season game and the Giants were fighting for a playoff spot, of course they were going to play well and the Pats perhaps not so well because it wasn't as important to them...other than to keep their streak going. I don't know, I don't see this one being that interesting and that's why I started this thread.

I have to say that when the Patriots played the Eagles in the 2005 Super Bowl, I would have been happy if either team won ... here's why ... a)I'm from Massachusetts, to NE is my team but b) I would have been happy if the Eagles won because their QB is/was Donovan McNabb, who was the QB of my college team ... so I would be happy to have him get the win ... much like I was happy when the the Colts won last year for Marvin Harrison (WR from my college) and Dwight Freeny (Defensive Back from my college)
Oh, my college was Syracuse.

FYI...
Before New England had a football team to call it's own (pre-Patriots days) most New Englanders rooted for the NY Giants because it was the closest team geographically speaking. So you will still find many Giants fans in New England (including my husband's best friend, who is a Giants fan because his dad is. Should be interesting watching the Superbowl together. ;)) And I think because of that, you might find many New Englanders happy regardless of which team wins, because for a lot it's a win-win situation either way.
I also think the game is going to be a lot closer than the spread is predicting.
Oh my. I'm in trouble.
I have this double picture frame hanging on the wall of my living room. It holds two 4x6s. One one side I have a picture of my son at 6 months in an Eagles jersey (my dad is an Eagles fan) and on the other side I have a picture of my son at 6 months in a Redskins Jersey (husband and his dad are Redskins fans). I'm calling that boy right this minute and demanding he tell me who the hell he supports!!!!!! OH - and he often calls my parent's cat Lori "his cat". So now he's a cat owner by association I suppose. THE NERVE!
With that being said since neither of the TWO teams I normally support are going to the Superbowl I will root for the Giants. The reason being is because that was my sister's (may she rest in peace) favorite team so I'm rooting for them on her behalf. Um - I mean if that is okay. ;) I know she'd be overjoyed that they are going to the main event so I'm not at all disappointed in the Superbowl this year!

omg, this thread cracks me up. It is very funny to read comments here and then go read comments on a fan board (e.g. more men responding). ANYway, I still think Eli is a whiner and I don't like him. ;) And while I think some of Peyton's commercials are funny, I think the whole family are a bunch of ad-whores! And good for them, I mean milk it while you can, but just as I am tired of listening to commentators love on Tom Brady, I am tired of seeing some sort of Manning in every other commercial on TV! :p
That said, Belichick is aloof and kind of an asshole, but I have to say he cracks me up. Watching his robotic emotions before/during/after games is part of the fun of football to me. I used to hate him after the transition from Pete Carroll, but now I am used to him and it is just comical.
I blocked out the fact that the Giants vs. Patriots is the only game we missed the entire season b/c we were on a cross-country flight and (unbeknownst to us) our satellite was out so the game did not Tivo as we had hoped. We may have to dig it up on the NFL Network to see how it all went down.

Okay, I think you're right about the Giants being already in the playoffs but I believe they were still fighting for a particular seed (too bad they didn't face the Hawks here because I know we would've beat them ;) ) so they were playing for something. Most teams play their starters even if they have a guaranteed playoff spot. Not necessarily for a full game but a lot of those players want those extra stats because it could mean more $$.

Let me preface this by saying that, as a Chargers fan, I may be a *bit* biased but I will try to do my best in presenting my arguments/sentiments in a way that is both responsible and educated.
First off, leave it to a Boston Herald columnist to write a column about how much more classy the fans of the Patriots and people of Massachusetts are in comparison to a rival team. These are the same people that wrote this:
No Chance in Hell (http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/football/patriots/view.bg?articleid=1066602)
and this:
Ruined It (http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/football/patriots/view.bg?articleid=1066380)
Let's put things in perspective first and foremost, up until the last decade the people of Mass/Boston/New England/whatever were the lovable losers in all aspects of sports. Whether it was the Celtics, the Patriots*, or the Sox, they were no where on the radar in the world of sports. Then all of the sudden you win a couple rings and world series trophies and now we have a gathering of some of the most arrogant fans I have ever encountered and conversed with. And please spare me with the whole, well not every fan is that way. We were in Foxboro week before last for the AFCCG and let me tell you... even after the win, every single fan we encountered was obnoxious and completely ungracious. I'm talking middle fingers, flying beer and even a kick to our rental car. We were seriously wondering what everyone was so pissed about, they had just won! We had a great trip and thank goodness we are very laid back Californians but as a result, our perception of this so called dynasty and it's fan base was forever changed.
Next, getting back to the whole Spygate thing. No one will ever know the ramifications and long term effects this scandal with have on this season, next season or the NFL as a whole, ala NBA. But what cannot be argued is that it happened. When it happened or for how long doesn't really matter. To say that Martha served her time and payed the fine, doesn't make securities fraud any less of a "big deal" than it actually is. Does it raise any eyebrows that Goodell (NFL Commissioner) went to great lengths and DESTROYED all of the evidence that the Patriots handed over? What purpose did that serve? Is it possible that this scandal was more far reaching than they could have ever anticipated? And who's to say that none of that was ever duplicated? Conspiratorial rantings of a rival fan? Or possibility of something more?
For the record...
* Sunday, Sept. 9: During the Patriots-Jets season opener, security officers seize a video camera a team official on the New England sideline was using to film signal-calling on the New York sideline. NFL rules forbid filming the opponents' sideline or recording opponents' signal calling. Clubs had been reminded of this prohibition by a strongly worded directive sent from league headquarters in September 2006.
* Thursday, Sept. 13: Commissioner Goodell declares the Patriots guilty of "a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid long-standing rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field." He imposes on New England the strongest penalty in NFL history: loss of a first-round pick (if the Pats make the playoffs), or second- and third-round choices in the 2008 draft (if New England fails to reach the postseason); a $500,000 personal fine against Belichick; and a $250,000 club fine. Goodell orders the Patriots to turn over all videotapes and other materials obtained in violation of NFL rules, although this part of his decision is not publicly announced.
* Sunday morning, Sept. 16: On ESPN, Chris Mortensen reports Goodell's directive that the Patriots surrender all videotapes and notes containing cheating materials.
* Sunday evening, Sept. 16: On NBC's "Football Night in America," Goodell says New England has not yet complied with his order to surrender all illegal materials, adding the Patriots will be penalized more if the materials don't arrive soon.
* Monday, Sept. 17: Asked whether he will surrender videotapes and notes to the league, Belichick answers, "Of course." Asked by The Boston Globe whether NFL headquarters has received the Patriots' materials, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello answers, "We don't have anything else on the matter to report right now."
* Sometime between Monday night, Sept. 17, and Thursday afternoon, Sept. 20: The New England materials arrive at league headquarters.
* Thursday night, Sept. 20: The NFL announces all of the Patriots' materials have been destroyed, disclosing nothing about their contents.
* The Patriots have been caught before. Last November, during their 35-0 victory in Green Bay, the Packers caught Estrella shooting unauthorized video and told him to stop.
More than "1 quarter" of illegal tape... In my opinion, if you were that great of a team to begin with, you wouldn't need to go to extreme measures to cheat and risk getting caught. But I guess that also has something to do with Belichick's arrogance and superiority complex that had him believing he was untouchable and above reproach.
And lastly, something that no one has brought up, and of the major reasons why nothing that Pats ever do will be worth anything, is the the type of people that this team is comprised of. In the starting lineup: Bill, a pompous wife cheating philanderer; Brady a guy who leaves his pregnant girlfriend in the dust and shacks up with a supermodel (and please don't go there with him being a gracious athlete, he's notorious for walking off the field after a loss); Moss a woman beater than only plays football when his team wins; Rodney "HGH" Harrison (who admitted to knowingly injecting himself with a steriod, please don't make comparisons to Merriman unless you have the knowledge to back this up with citations. I do but we can make another thread on that.)...shall I go on?
Sorry, I just something I feel strongly about and I've had to hear about all year long. ;) I blame the talking heads for jumping on the drama and the latest headline, it is after all, all about the ratings right?
And now, I leave you with some hilarity:

As for Pats fans being smarter, classier, healthier and all that...it doesn't matter (and obviously the article is in the spirit of rivalry.) It's not up to the fans to win the game, it's up to the team. I can imagine on both sides of the fence there are some team members with skeletons in their closets. Since they're throwing out personal things like income and how big one's house is, let's talk about the handling of the personal life of the Pat's quarterback. If that's class, I'd rather hang with the beer drinking, peanut and pretzel eating New Yorkers. The mansions and college degrees aren't going to contribute to the game one iota.

That's one ironic article if I've ever seen one. So let me get this straight: a Boston newspaper columnist did research to prove that her towns' fans are smarter, classier, and all-around better than those New York fans. The fact that someone went out of their way to even try and prove this hypothesis is, in my opinion, pretty classless. Pot meet kettle!
Besides, what does it matter when it comes down to the actual game? Nothing!

Ummm...nope. Sorry to disappoint ya, but the decade of fame for the Celtics was the 80s. So they were INDEED VERY MUCH on the radar before these past 10 years! I lived back home in Boston then and they were on top of their game (not to mention everyone else's with the likes of Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish.) A HUGE congratulations to the NY Giants! They deserved this win, and I so loved watching Eli break out of that attempted sack! Tom Brady really seemed to fall apart.

That was truly one of the best football games I've ever watched and hands-down the most exciting Super Bowl in recent history. And can I just say that Eli's throw during the final drive was nothing short of pure brilliance. DH and I both said "He's sacked, game over!" and then....that stumbling break-away run and throw to shock us! WOW!! He totally deserved MVP just because of that one play.

Belichick seems to be an overall jerk, and most Patriots fans I speak to agree with that. I understand his disappointment, but his post-game interview was awful.
Belichick at the best of times doesn't say a heck of a lot. He's not known for being a man of many words and because of that, can come off as rather dry. But I have to ask, were you watching the same post-game interview I was, because I wouldn't exactly call it "awful"? Sure, you could clearly tell he was very disappointed, and it was very dry and matter of fact (which is Belichick's style) but he was also very gracious to Giants in congratulating them on their win, saying it was well deserved on their part. I also thought Tom Brady's post game interview was a class act if there ever was one, very well spoken and extremely gracious in congratulating the winners.
(And in the event that someone mentions Belichick not coming back onto the field for the last play, as I am sure someone will inevitably will, the game clock on the field had run down to zero, you could see Belichick watching it, and he ran off the field because he thought the game was over. Then someone decided to add one second back onto the clock. While he probably should have come back, it would have been practically impossible with the crush and crowd that was already on the field, given he was halfway into the locker room at that point.)
And next time Belichick, wear the grey hoodie dammit, what was up with the red one?)
ETA: Last night's Superbowl was a huge disappointment for most Pats fans. Seriously though, they played like total crap and deserved to lose. Brady had absolutely no protection from his offensive line, and let's not even talk about the defense. Had they stopped Manning in that last quarter like they should have, the game would have been ours.
However, while many New Englanders are certainly disappointed this morning, keep in mind that before New England had a professional football team, most people cheered for the Giants by default because they were the closest team geographically, so believe it or not there are still a lot of Giants fans here. For many people, it was a win-win situation regardless of who won. Also keep in mind that the Giants coach, Tom Coughlin, was the head coach for Boston College for several years, and there were many people here who were happy to see him win because of that.

honestly, other than the 4th quarter, I thought it was one of the most boring superbowl games on recent history. 7-3 after the 3rd? boooorrrriiiinnnnggg. now the 4th quarter was one of the best by far and I did come away thinking it was a great game at the end. but I did a lot of eating in the first 3 quarters!
Bill Belachick should be ashamed of himself. I wonder if they will fine him for leaving the sidelines. probably one of the most unprofessional things I have seen in a long time.
and although I can't stand Eli Manning- I was thrilled to see Tom Brady lose. I loved every single sack. all 5 of them! and how thrilling for the Manning family to have back to back superbowl wins in their family. I don't like them much either but it's still cool for them.
anyway- congratulations to the Giants! well deserved.

I think this game was a lot more exciting than people thought it was going to be. As much as I was rooting for Eli (I'm a Manning fan - can't help it) I thought it would be NE all the way.
On Bill - there was a lot of confusion after the game - the clock read 0.00 - he went, hugged Tom and took a few minutes to talk to him. As much as I'm not a NE fan, I don't think he purposely did anything wrong (and my boyfriend Mike Greenberg agrees;) ) I think Tom and Bill were as shocked as most people were at the outcome - and it came across during the interviews.

What a great Superbowl! I agree that Belichick leaving the sidelines was completely disrespectful! You could see the officials trying to stop him from going on the field. How hard would it be to stay and wait until the game was officially over. (Its not the first time officials put time back on the clock. it happens ALL.THE.TIME!) What a sore loser. The coaches that lost to him in 3 Superbowls had the decency and respect to wait and congratulate him, but he was too self absorbed and wallowing to do the same!

Belichick did come to the middle and congratulate by all regards it was a normal end of the game, aside from there suddenly being 2 seconds put back on the clock. He'd already done his congrats....no need to do it again. And I thought his post game interview was as classy as anyones for having just lost the big game. And I'm not a Pats fan in the slightest.

Exactly. And I would be more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't realize the game wasn't over if he hadn't been such a jerk in the past to other coaches (like when he blew off Tony Dungy's handshake this season).
Tom Brady definitely showed that he has a lot more class than his coach in his post-game interview.

Awesome game. It was so exciting at the end I thought I was going to be sick! It was almost as satisfying see all the looks on the overconfident Patriots faces! Bellichek is a sore loser and I was so happy to see him lose. Brady was a gracious loser, his coach, not so much. I guess Giselle is now the Jessica Simpson of the Patriots!!

Yes, I sure did, and my opinion remains the same. I don't need to get into a debate on how a professional coach handles his interview after losing the Superbowl. It was just my take on it. I know his reputation for having a dry personality. I still feel it was awful.

You're right. They should have. They certainly had the chance, but they didn't. So the game went to the team who wanted, and deserved it more.

I'm not interested in getting into a debate either, and I totally get that it's your opinion, and can understand how you (and others), might have seen it as an "awful" interview.
However, after reading your post, I was just wondering whether or not you were familiar with Belichick's interview style or not beyond seeing the one interview that was given post-game yesterday. Given that you live in Florida, I know for a fact that during the regular season, in your area they normally wouldn't show any of Belichick's regular post-game press conferences there, or any of his interviews, at least not to the extent that you would see them in NE. So knowing that, I thought that it was entirely possible that you were unaware that his "dry" personality is how he always is. It does tend to come across as somewhat stand-offish (and perhaps "awful") if you are not familiar with it and don't know that that is just the way he is.

I've been watching football for awhile now...followed him while he coached the Jets and the Browns. I'm no expert, but pretty familiar. In Florida we have quite a lot of Northeastern transplants/snow birds here who also closely follow the NE teams, so we do get a lot of coverage (and I have several ESPN channels LOL.) I don't deny the man's coaching ability despite the cheating scandal. He's been at it for over 30 very successful years. While I can't fully grasp the level of his disappointment, I just feel how I feel. Who knows-if it had been Coughlin giving the interview instead maybe some Pats fans would say the same.

We have several members on both sides of the family who have moved down there, more who choose to winter there, and they are all die-hard New England fans to the core ;). My cousin and her family live in Central FL with her family, and they watch as much as they can, but they occassionally complain that they can't get some of the New England football games there because they have to broadcast either the Tampa Bay or Miami games due to TV contract issues.

LOL I'm lucky. I'm from Miami and live in Tampa, so we get good coverage whether I'm with my family down South or here in Tampa (duh and I just realized I misunderstood what you meant, but I get it now. however...) If they can get the NFL Network, it's awesome! They show games you usually can't get on regular network TV. :) I think they may have changed it because it used to be that you could only get it through DirectTV or something, but I know Verizon and others are now offering it.

DH was pretty worked up last night and even though he was disappointed in the results, he said that the Giants definately deserved to win it...they brought on their A game and played one hell of a defense. I couldn't even entice DH with post-game sex to make him feel better (poor guy). :D

I almost think the entire defense deserved the MVP award...it was definitely a defensive game for the most part. Brady was shaken up and couldn't get a good look down field for most of the game. A lot of people think those games can be boring but I actually like them, they're super fun to watch in person.

I have to say I really enjoyed this game - and I usually don't even like football (esp TV football). My DH begged me to watch it with him, and I got more excited about it than he did. I always root for the underdog, but being in NJ, it was pretty neat to see the Giants win.

Games aren't about a desire to win and entitlement. They're about skill, teamwork, and more than a little luck.

It's an opinion. Yours may vary. They played much better, and because they played better I feel they deserved it more. They played harder because it seemed TO ME they wanted it more. I disagree with you on desire. Winning takes desire. If there is no desire to win, then why bother playing in the first place? It felt like Brady just lost it in the end. I didn't start watching football yesterday. I was married to a guy who coached the sport for 9 years. I know a little about what it takes to win games. Again an OPINION. Like it, don't like it. Whatever.

Actually, I believe that Belichick walked onto the field to protest to the refs about the Giants team/fans/everyone celebrating on the field before the game was officially over. He wanted his team to be able to finish the game. Then, he walked off the field.
But, if anyone is to give a fine to someone (as mentioned by a previous poster) it would be to the Giants for celebrating on the field before the game was officially over.
And it irritated the crap out of me that there were TWO plays while the Giants were on offense (before they got the final TD) that they put the time clock back because of timeouts. Well, if anyone watched Brady closely in the final seconds of the game, he called timeout right when he went down and they did not put the time clock back 2 seconds like it should have been. Not that that would have won the Pats the game or anything, but still, it irritated me.

I have all the respect in the world for what Belichick has done as a coach, but the man is a complete @ss. You can pretty much ask anyone. My husband interviewed for a job with the 49ers a few weeks ago and all this exec. could talk about was making sure Belichick was not coaching the Pro Bowl so he didn't have to deal with him - that no one likes him. Granted men fight like little kids over toys in sports, but the guy is class-less. Anyway...I was glad to see Belichick lose last night. And he likely stormed off the field so he could get away from all the madness. I have never,e ver seen a coach act like that on a "world stage" for a very long time. Belichick - he ain't no Bill Walsh, that's for sure.

Players regularly skip all-star games and competitions; it's not uncommon at all. For example, Barry Bonds skips the All-Star Homerun Derby because he doesn't want to risk getting hurt. Brady has had a sore ankle; I'm sure it got aggravated during the Super Bowl. Is it worth risking his career to play in an all-star game? The players haven't even said why they're skipping the game.

News reports here have indicated that Brady dropped out because of his ankle being sore. Given that it was bothering him the week before and he was wearing an air cast, along with the hammering he received during the game, it's somewhat believable, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt here.
Randy Moss has also dropped out due to injury, but the injury has not been specified.

I just saw Tyree on Ellen... he seemed like such a nice normal guy. Ellen asked him something about getting a massage and he said he'd be better off going home to give his wife who's about due with twins a massage. And he was so grateful for the gifts Ellen gave him (a helmet and football with velcro so he can recreate his catch whenever, and a huge framed SI where he's on the cover). I just love seeing role models like that.

I heard an interview with Brady right after the AFC championship on WEEI in Boston. They asked him about the ankle before the whole walking cast photo, and he said it was no big deal. The interviewer then said "but I'll bet it will flare up again right before the Pro Bowl." Brady laughed and said word to the effect of "you can count on it." So, my take is that he was bowing out win or lose the Super Bowl.
I know the Pats get lots of criticism, and some very deserved, but I don't think the Pro Bowl thing was sore losing based on what I'd heard.
