My son finallly went to the dentist. He has a few cavities that need to be filled. The dentist said they will use gas. My son hate anything in his mouth he was a little scared. I'm not certain I want this for him. I might be over reacting so I thought I would ask.

The last 2 times I brought my oldest DD to the dentist, he used the gas on her. She had a very bad experience a few years ago with a different dentist and now gets very worked up when we go in. We have a new dentist, and he is great with DD, and the gas really relaxed her with no side effects.
My dentist never uses gas, but she's really good and my kids are totally at ease with her.
I remember having it when I was little and didn't have any problems. But then, we had a dentist who was a jerk and I was TERRIFIED of going to him!!

My son (who just turned 4) had his first cavity and filling a few weeks ago. The pediatric dentist didn't use anything (not even novacaine) and it was no problem. My son was perfectly still and did not shed a tear. The pediatric dentist said that he never uses anything and if they only drill for a few seconds at a time, there isn't a problem with baby teeth. I would think twice before using gas for a cavity.

Yes, it is available at the pediatric dentist that we go to. Depending on the kid and how bad the cavity is, you can decide if you would like it. My dentist mentioned that having a calm experience at the dentist is important to him and although he never pushes it, he would never want to tramatize a child and thinks that using a bit of gas is worth it to make sure that it is a positive experience.

This is exactly what our dentist told us on Friday, when my 4 year old had her first-ever dentist visit and they found a small cavity. We're having the cavity filled, and he will be using gas. I am comfortable with it, and totally agree that keeping the child calm is essential to making it a positive experience.
