We have always subscribed to Babybug/Ladybug/Spider magazines since my oldest was a baby.

Ladybug would be for a 3 year old.

DS loves the ladybug magizines we get them out of the libary. We also got Big Backyard Magazine last year when DS was 3 and he did not like it much. It was too much non-fiction for him. There were particular features he liked but lots of pictures of animals and a few facts about them did not keep his interst, though he does love animals and science, for him they need to be in a story format. Animal Baby is the younger version of Big Backyard and DS loved that one. I think it goes from age 1-3. I could see many 3 years still liking this one, depending on their attention span to stories, how far along they are in things like color recognition and ablity to find things hidden in a picture. DS does not really get that into High Five, which suprised me because it has alot of fun games and stories in it.

There's another thread on this (I have it on my subscribed list) with some more ideas:

We still haven't gotten a magazine for DD but my parents got me PARENTING and it comes with a Sesame Street magazine. DD will be 3 next week and is JUST starting to get into it. I just got HIGH FIVE for my 4 y.o. nephew for Christmas.

My son got Ladybug last year, which I thought was pretty fun. My parents were sending it to him. Somehow we got our wires crossed and they thought we were only lukewarm on it, so they switched to Little Geographic, or something like that. It's the kids version of National Geographic. He also got a gift subscription to it for his birthday from a friend. :) We're still waiting on the first issue.

I second Highlights High Five. My daughter has been getting it for 2 years now, and we love it.
