ST. CHARLES, Mo. - What the ...? A St. Louis-area town is considering a bill that would ban swearing in bars, along with table-dancing, drinking contests and profane music.

City officials contend the bill is needed to keep rowdy crowds under control because the historic downtown area gets a little too lively on some nights.

City Councilman Richard Veit said he was prompted to propose the bill after complaints about bad bar behavior. He says it will give police some rules to enforce when things get too rowdy.

...

The proposal would ban indecent, profane or obscene language, songs, entertainment and literature at bars.

Ha! I used to live there. Apparently that councilman has a little too much time on his hands. St. Charles is not what I'd describe "rowdy" even on a good night!

Oh Christ.

So the town needs a way to make some more money, and this is the solution? It will give police "some rules to enforce"? That's pathetic.

As a previous St Charles MO resident I can tell you that the only reason that the Historic area gets rowdy is because they keep letting bars and clubs buy the property and its right by the casino. Sheesh, what a way to censor people having a good time where they are allowed to.
I wont go to a bar that wont allow me to have fun and curse if I damn well want to.

What the frock? I mean, seriously, that's why I go to bars, to curse loudly like a sailor.

St Charles is just trying to ruin the fun times people can have on Main Street. It's ridiculous. The whole county of St Charles can be incredibly conservative and patronizing at times...

Bring it on -- it'll drive the bar scene and money to St Charles' neighboring communities!

Oh yeah, this ban would survive. The ACLU would be ALL over it. And this time, I'd actually support them! :p
