View Full Version : Clean house for New Year's?

Did anyone read Redbook this month? There was an article about cleaning your house in time for New Year's. Anyways, I either heard, or read there that if your house *isn't* clean for New Year's you shouldn't do it that day or it just creates more bad luck.
Okay, found my Redbook, it's called "get lucky in '08". And yep, you're not supposed to clean on the day of, but before is great. If you can't do the whole thing, they suggest concentrating on the kitchen.
Anyone try this?

Yep! Every year I deep clean either the day before or the weekend before. I like to start the year fresh. Tonight all we have to do is vaccum and finish the laundry.

Oh man, my house is so not clean right now. We're working on converting our old "media room" into a nursery and so there's kind of stuff everywhere.
However, the dishes and laundry are done! There's just a lot of clutter lying about.

I've been purging old clothes all day today. I decided to go into '08 with a clean master closet ;)!
My mom's friend buys a new broom on NYE every year, and at midnight, she "Sweeps the old" out of her house, right out the door, including the old broom. That way she starts off the new year with a new broom.

I have cleaned up and organized some stuff that has been hanging around. Yeah, I like to think of it as a fresh start.

Well, everything is basically clean here. Except DDs room (so much Christmas stuff to still put away) and our room. Of course, our room never stays clean for long, as it seems to catch all of the "oh no, someone is coming - shove this in there". ;)

Do they mean it's okay to clean today and not tomorrow? Or the other way around?

You are supposed to spend the next year doing what you do on New Years Day so you don't want to be cleaning tomorrow! At least that's the OWT. We spend NYD with family and friends!
Another superstition is that you are supposed to have $5 cash in your wallet on NYE to ensure that you have enough money to get you through the new year.

LOL, That is my room as well most of the time. The rest of my house is always clean.

Good to read this as I have just cleaned the place in preparation for some quiet time with my sweetie tonight waiting on the ball to drop. I read some where it was good luck to sleep in a freshly made (linen changed) bed...I don't recall the inference, but I did it anyway.
Happy New Year!

Thank God I'm not superstitious - my house is quite messy today and will likely get cleaned tomorrow! :p

I tried to do some cleaning yesterday, but it's so hard to clean with my 7th month old...although I guess I could clean during some of my computer time :o

I never heard that it was bad luck to have a messy house on NY day or to clean that day. I usually always clean the weekend before anyway because I like to get a fresh start once NY comes.

Well, we are screwed if the house is supposed to be clean before 1/1!!! I usually run a pretty clean ship, but DH has been putting in and sanding drywall this week. Dust is EVERYWHERE!!!!!!

YAY! A great excuse to be lazy today! :p My house is filthy and could really use a good scrubbing, but man, I do not want bad luck for 2008. So, I guess I will wait and clean another day! Thanks for the info!

We've been in and out of town all week and my house deserves a New Years gift of being clean :)

No way - I don't care - our house is an absolute disaster and somehow everything exploded looking for shoes and cufflinks last night. We won't be cleaning it for 'New Year's', we'll be cleaning it because I can't stand the crap everywhere.
MKredhead - DW sanding dust absolutely sucks! Oh, man I really feel for you.

Well, considering we put our Christmas tree away on Jan 1st every year, that involves quite a bit of cleaning. So I've always done at least some cleaning on New Year's Day.
Hmmm...maybe that's the problem!

Awesome! Yet another thing to procrastinate! I don't have to take my Xmas tree down today either. Thanks! :)

Seeing as my birthday is tomorrow and I absolutely will not be cleaning tomorrow, I have to clean on New Year's Day LOL

Guess im in for bad luck in 08? I have spent most of the day cleaning today, and the whole day yesterday cleaning as well! Deep cleaning our bedrooms and purging old clothes, shoes, etc.
It feels so nice to have everything done though!

My mom is extremely superstitious so she has pretty much tattooed it in my brain to clean before that clock strikes midnight. I was a very very busy bee yesterday cleaning like crazy. DH still does not get it but he sure does appreciate it ;)

Ah crap! Does vacuuming up the needles after we took down the tree count as cleaning?

My MIL always says not to do anything on New Years Day that you don't want to be doing all year. We were totally lazy that day and the only thing we accomplished was taking our tree down. LOL.
I started my BIG cleaning/organizing process last weekend. I'm tired of my house looking like a tornado came through.
