My MIL constantly lets DS chew on her keys. She says he likes it. Well he's a baby, he likes jingly things in front of him and he puts everything in his mouth. I know I should just be able to say please don't offer them to him but well...that's another thread. I've asked DH to ask her to please not offer them but he asked me "well what's so gross about it?" Ugh  This is coming from the dad who disinfects all the new toys right out of the packaging because he "doesn't know who's been playing with it in the store". Anyhow....I was hoping to come up with a good article to send him about why it's not a good idea to let your baby chew on real keys. I googled it every way I could think and I didn't come up with a thing. Does anyone have any information on this subject or links they could pass my way to help prove my point.

Thanks.

Eeek! I would be upset about this as well. Not only are the keys germy, but they also have sharp edges that babies can cut their gums and mouths on and many contain lead.

All I could find was a PDF ..hope this helps you.

I always carry plastic keys with me because they are dd's favorite toy right now and they're easily portable. You could say "here are DS's keys instead." Though the lead and sharp edges reason should be good enough for anyone.

Also, a friend of mine let her ds chew on her keys and it shorted out her key fob on it. It cost her $100 to get it fixed/replaced so maybe that will be enough motive for your MIL.

There's this by parents that a lot of kids seem to like too.

jeneca....THANKS! That is perfect. And I didn't know about lead, just figured they were germy. I will have no problem telling her to stop now. She is one of those random people who still have about 10 keys on her keychain so there are lots to chew on.

We also have the Parents brand keys and DD LOVES them. They aren't that expensive and you can get them at Target.
