ST. JOSEPH, Missouri (AP) -- A blinding snowstorm blew across the Plains on Saturday, causing at least two deaths and dozens of injuries in numerous multi-car pileups and forcing authorities to close portions of several major highways.

One person died in a chain-reaction pileup involving as many as 80 vehicles, including several tractor-trailer rigs, on Interstate 40 in Amarillo, Texas, police said.

Many were holiday travelers, including some families with small children not dressed for the cold weather, police Sgt. Shawn McLeland.

Other drivers spotted them and opened Christmas presents to provide warmer clothing for the children.

I thought this story was cool:

Starbucks employee Michael Smith of Marysville was working the drive-through window when the first woman drove through and paid for the next customer.

When he explained to the next person what happened, that customer decided to pass the good will along, Starbucks shift supervisor Sarah Nix said.

Then the next person followed suit. And the next person. And the next person.

Once the chain picked up, Smith refused to leave the drive-through window. He saw it as a special trust given to him by that first customer.

In a chain reaction of a "pay it forward" type hundreds of people paid for the coffee for the person behind them in line.

I live about an hour north of there and the day after the story aired on local news we went to the Starbucks drive-thru. We figured we'd pay for the person behind us and we were pretty shocked when we pulled up and the car in front of us had paid for our drinks! I wonder if they saw the story too. :) Anyway, we paid for the car behind us. I'm curious how many cars after us did the same.
