View Full Version : Disinfectant wipes- safe on baby toys?

I can't figure it out. The back of the Lysol wipes container says hazardous if consumed, so I am thinking they are not safe to use on DD's toys, especially since most of them end up in her mouth. But I could have sworn I've read posts by other CC women that do use them on their DC's toys.
Our old nanny (who used to run a daycare) used Lysol wipes every day on the toys, at the end of the day. Let the wipes moisture on the toys dry and they're fine.

Okay..I just wasn't sure if any residue left from the wipes would be toxic or not. Obviously not something that I wanted to take a chance on, KWIM?

I'd use plain soap and water or Clorox Anywhere spray.

Even once regular disinfectants dry, there's a chemical residue.

I've never disinfected toys. If someone comes over and I find out they got sick, I might take the toy out of rotation for a day or two. Most viruses and bacteria do not live long outside of the body, so just airtime will generally kill the ickies. Realistically, though, if someone comes over and then I find out they got sick, we probably were exposed more than the toys were...

Very true.
The only time I really wash DD's toys are when she drops them outside. If they get dropped while wet indoors and get stray dust, etc, on them, I just rinse them under hot water.

We recently weeded through DD's toys. We used Clorox Anywhere spray on all of the toys. The toys we kept in rotation we also did a hot water rince after the spray dried.
We use the anywhere spray on her high chair too - but again, I do another swipe with a warm wet cloth. If I use regular wipes, I do a soap and water rince too. A bit neurotic, I'm aware, but... :)

I'm with LML - I don't disinfect toys.
I'd be wary of using things like Lysol and whatnot. I know that my Mr. Clean disinfecting spray says that food surfaces must be rinsed after use. I take that to mean that the chemicals shouldn't be ingested.

Ditto that! If DS' toys get dirty, I wash them with hot water :)

I dont disinfect toys either. If for some reason you cant move the toy (if its too large) you can use vinegar. Vinegar kills 99% of bacteria and 80% of germs. Sure it smells bad but its better for our bodies and the environment and it is cheaper!

I'd NEVER use anything on my baby's toys that I wouldn't directly put in my own mouth.
If I feel the need to wash a toy, I use a vinegar/water combo in a spray bottle.
Actually, MOST of my house is cleaned with vinegar and baking soda.

If one of DS's toys is super icky, I will wash it in soapy water (usually use Palmolive or similar dish detergent), thoroughly rinse, and air dry in my dish rack. He's teething lately, so everything seems to end up in his mouth. I figured washing his toys the same way I'd wash his dishes, is probably for the best.
