My son loves this truck & horse trailer that they have at Target:
Breyer Small Pickup Truck/Trailer (http://www.target.com/Breyer-Small-Pickup-Truck-Trailer/dp/B000MVTGYI/ref=sc_ri_2/602-2959305-1598250)

It is labeled 8 & up and only holds the small horses (about 3in wide), though. The only review it had was not very good either. Does anyone know of an alternative toy that would be a horse trailer? He also wants a stable and one that is the same brand gets very bad reviews. Now that I look at it, almost all the Breyer toys got the same reviews as cheap plastic junk. Not exactly what I'm looking for. :)

If anyone has any other suggestions, please pass them along.

This is on the list of considerations for DS's Christmas present.

Steph,

I bookmarked a site with a gazillion horse toys and gifts this weekend on my home computer. When I get home tonight I'll come in and post it for you...

Thanks Erin! I appreciate it.

I hope I can find something reasonable for DS because he seems to like it so much.

I'll ask DP too because she obviously (having loved and been incredibly involved with horses for 30 years) will have some suggestions about companies and websites etc.

How about this one? Too babyish?

We have a couple of toys from this range, and they're great. Sturdy and battery-free.

okedoke...

DP said Breyer is made for older kids and just won't hold up to little hands. Especially the Stablemates type of Breyer is definitely way too delicate.

The Schleis brand of horses (also sold at Target) she said is very good, more sturdy.

I don't know what your price range is but she poked around the web tonight and found a Melissa and Doug one at amazon...for kids 3 and up.

http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Folding-Horse-Stable/dp/B000067BIE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1196131798&sr=8-1

And another...

http://www.amazon.com/Jo-Ann-Wildwood-Stable-Dollhouse-Kit/dp/B000GPEVS6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1196132014&sr=8-2

And then here is a link for horse trailers

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_t/002-5703187-2827217?url=search-alias%3Dtoys-and-games&field-keywords=horse+trailer

So..bottom line I guess is steer clear from Breyer right now, but the Schleis stuff would be a good choice. These links should give you some good jumping off points.

I agree with EJH about the Schleis brand of animals - we have bought a bunch of these from Target for my 4 year old and 19 month old and they are very sturdy and have held up really well. The detail is great on the animals too. :)

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the input. DH & I went shopping yesterday and ended up getting a few more toys than expected, so we've passed along the suggestions to my mom for the Schleich brand! She'll decide what she wants to get, but I have my fingers crossed. :)

Erin and her family know their horses, so I say go with what she suggests! Just for you or any others who may still be looking at this thread, I also received the Hearth Song toy catalog in the mail last night and there was this Lucky Horseshoe® Stables Horse Van (http://www.hearthsong.com/hearthsong/product.do?section_id=0&bc=1005&pgc=850&cmvalue=HS|0|Normal%20Search%20Result|P5). The site has other horse-related accessories, too. The van is $90.

Our local toy/book shop carries the Safari Ltd horse truck/trailer (the 'Derby' trailer in the last link Erin posted). It's for ages 3+ and seems cute and very reasonably priced.

I talked to my mom last night and she ended up getting the Breyer brand since it was available in store. She also got him a stable and some horses. :D

I think he'll love it (of course, he's still talking about it!) and it will be fine. If it doesn't last that long and he still wants a horse trailer, we can always consider upgrading in the future.
