erin...i'm so sorry for your loss.
tray...congrats on the girl!

gender: we won't be finding out the sexes of the twins. two surprises!
telling people: i have my nuchal translucency u/s this thursday (12 weeks) so if all goes well, i think we'll tell after that. i'm definitely showing since i'm small and there's two in there. so far i haven't seen anyone who doesn't know (a few of our friends and family knew we were doing IVF) so it hasn't been a problem!
baby shower: we won't be having any because we're jewish and it's a jewish superstition not to have baby-related items bought or in the home before the baby is born.

well, dh and i have been in boston for the last week so i've been away from my computer! still suffering from m/s but the zofran is working well, so i'll stick with it!
my next appointment will be this thursday! can't wait.

My second appointment was this morning at 8:45am. I went in and they took a urine sample. She weighed me and my weight was the same! Yahoo. Then she took my blood pressure and I talked to the midwife.
I decided to decline the triple screen test which looks for an increased risk of Down's Syndrome and other neural tube defects. The main reason I nixed it is because there is nothing they can do in vitro to fix the problem and I will not terminate the pregnancy so I didn't see the point.
She then tried to find the heartbeat with the little doppler thing and she couldn't find it. Normally, this would freak me out but I was completely calm. She said this could be from a number of reasons including the location of the placenta, the placement of the baby, and my possibly tilted uterus. She also said that she is not too concerned about it because of the u/s that we had that showed a heartbeat. She said if I had not had a u/s, she would be worried about a blighted ovum or something of that nature. Still, she wanted me to come back in 2 weeks instead of 4 weeks so we could definitely hear the heartbeat then.
We went over the u/s results and she said everything looks perfect and put my due date at February 20. She said everything looks perfect with me too.
My next appointment is August 9 at 8:15am. If we don't hear a heartbeat at that appointment, then I definitely WILL be freaking out.

angelgirl - Glad to hear the zofran is working for you! And, wow, you must have a lot of patience to be able to wait 9 months for two surprises!! Hope all goes well at your appt on Thursday.
Mindy - I think I will be declining the triple screen test too for the same reasons. I think for me the only thing it would do is stress me out, especially since I'm really not wanting an amnio so I wouldn't get definite results anyway. I'm sure your little one is doing fine - it's still early for them to hear the heartbeat on the doppler, isn't it? I'll be praying that you hear a nice strong heartbeat at the next appt!
Question - Anyone thinking of renting a doppler to hear the baby's heartbeat on your own? I'm thinking that might give me the peace of mind I'm dying for between visits (at least until I can feel the baby move). But I don't know anyone who has actually rented one...

I keep thinking I want to rent one this time. I didn't for my last pregnancy but I was also less on the edge and worried about things for some reason. I haven't heard a heartbeat yet, haven't had an u/s or anything confirming the baby is doing well and I don't have a doctor's appointment again until August 15 and I'll be 12 weeks and a few days. I'm dying to hear the heartbeat already so I can relax some. I'm thinking I'll wait to rent one though because if I am not able to find it I will freak out even more. A few friends rented them through heartones.com and if you google there are a ton of sites that have great reputations.

doppler I rented one from babybeats.com with my dd and ended up forgetting to return it. By the time I realized it, I had paid it off, so now I own it :) It is worth it now since I could use it again.

angelgirl - I don't think I could wait 9 months for 2 babies when I can't even wait 9 months to find out what 1 baby will be! Good for you! I wish I had your stamina/patience!
Mindy3094 - Yay for weighing the same - me too! I'm thinking about declining that triple screen test too - even though my insurance covers it, it won't change anything for us. I did have the CF test done but I'm thinking about declining the rest of them. We'll see. Jay may want them done, just because we can. Other than not hearing the heart beat, I'm glad everything else is going well for you! Hopefully you'll hear it in 2 weeks.

I wasn't really planning on renting a doppler. I think Jay would freak out - think I'm being overly cautious or something.
----------
We heard the heart beat today :D :D :D I had appt #2 and she found the heart beat within about 45 seconds. I didn't gain any weight, BP looks good, Dr was happy with everything. Due date is still February 8th. My next appt is August 22. And, for my September appt we'll do U/S #2 :) :)
Sorry i've been so quiet, I tried posting once before and it didn't work so I gave up. But I'm giving it another try. I had an u/s at 8w4d and I saw the heartbeat! I have an appointment Aug 4 and I'm hoping to hear it this time!
Angelgirl - I'm still on the Zofran too. I'm still nauseous most of the day but at least I don't throw up after I take it. Mornings are still rough though. Hopefully we'll feel better in the next trimester.
Testing- I don't know which tests we are going to do yet, I want to talk with the Dr. I don't want to do anything too invasive but I would like to be prepared should this be a special needs child.
Showers - My mother is planning one for me in NJ in November for my family out there and my MIL and Aunts are planning one here in IL after the holidays. Then the other day my co-worker said she is going to do something too! Wow! The work one will be very small and I was touched that they want do do something.
Doppler - I don't think I'm going to rent one, though I've had a couple friends who did and loved it.

On the subject of the quad screen testing....I am also going to decline it for the same reasons. I do not need the worry of the test possibly being positive if they will not be able to do anything about it anyway.
I saw my sister-in-law deal with it first hand. She had this test done as well and the doctor came back and told her that there was a good chance her baby would have down syndrome. Of course she spent the rest of the pregnancy wondering and being worried for her child. She now has a completely healthly baby boy. It was hard watching her go through all the worry for nothing in the end.

oh I've been gone for a few days- and just wanted to say jay and erin I'm so sorry to hear the sad sad news and I will keep you in my thoughts. Take care of yourself.
I was definitely being a little silly about the shower thing- my sister already brought it up and said- we'll have the weekend of Veteran's day at my house. LOL. I had my wedding shower there too- so no big deal, but I am definitely going to hire a maid. I spent the weekend with my sister and her 1 and 1/2 year old who I adore, but I was so overwhelmed. I just don't know how I'm going to do it.
I hope everyone is doing well. We must almost all be through our first trimester soon right? I'm at 11 weeks tomorrow. I'll be so excited to hit 12 weeks.

Hi all! I had a little freak out last night about not hearing the heartbeat but that lasted about 5 minutes and it was over. Thank the Lord we had that ultrasound and saw/heard a heartbeat there or I would be freaking out by now! :)
tinagirl
The midwife said they *usually* hear them on the doppler by 10 weeks but that the positioning could be throwing it off. She also seems to think I have a tilted uterus which actually goes backwards instead of forward. This will correct itself by 12 weeks though so she should be able to find it pretty easily at the next appointment.
aligirl
That is so exciting you heard the heartbeat! Hopefully mine will be that easy to find in a couple weeks (since I'm that far behind you!) The midwife was happy that I hadn't lost weight but honestly, I was happy that I didn't gain weight. I know the gain is coming! Wow, September will be here before you know it! I cannot wait for our big u/s but it probably won't be until October. Time flies though!
A-lo
Congrats on seeing the heartbeat!

Yes, you are definitely one patient lady! :)

Thank you for posting that story about your SIL. That would be so hard to think that you might be having a Down's baby for that long. Ugh. That helps me feel better about declining the test.

Yay for a shower! Woohoo! Yup, the beginning of Feb due dates should be heading into the 2nd tri very soon. I am later in Feb so I won't hit the 2nd tri until August 10. We are getting there!
Doppler Oh my, I would LOVE to rent one of these and I kind of brought it up to hubby last night just to put the bug in his head. I'll have to bring it up again in a week or two.
