I could not find any whole allspice berries at the grocery store, only ground. I need it for a couple recipes (Alton Brown's turkey brine and mulled cider). Is there anything I could substite it with if I can't find any?
Thanks!

I have the same dilemma. This is what I found:
One teaspoon ground allspice is equivalent to approximate 5 whole berries.
If you need a substitute for allspice combine equal parts of ground cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and black pepper.

In the past 2 years, I have just used ground allspice for the Alton Brown brined turkey recipe. The turkey still tastes great! I plan on doing the same this year. Good to know about the allspice substitutions.

Foodsubs.com is a great website for stuff like that. :)

Thank you for the suggestions. I found some at another grocery store, but I will keep your suggestions in mind for next time.

For mulled cider I do prefer whole spices.
However, for the brine it shouldn't matter too much. You have to rinse the bird afterwards anyways.
Hopefully that will help if anyone else has the same problem!
