Water smoking while boiling?

I am boiling a pot of water for pasta and the water is SMOKING?!? It is not the pan or the burning, the smoke is coming out of the water. I used water from our Pur faucet filter, which I don't normally do.

Anyone ever hear of this? It is very weird.

Actual smoke - gray, and it smells. It went away after awhile and was just regular steam. I have proceeded with cooking the pasta despite the smoky water, so I hope it's okay.
