Bush sidesteps Congress and appoints Bolton to UN (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8758621/)

IMO, a huge mistake.

A nightmare of an appointment.

Oh my, that's just too slimey for words.
I can't even begin to imagine what he'll do about the Supreme Court.

But at least Bolton has to convince 170 other UN ambassadors before he starts trying to "reform" the UN.

It's not surprising. Heck, if I shared W's world view I might admire the move. Sit back, let everyone get agitated, and then slip it in when there is nothing they can do about it. Though I'm not at all sure Bolton was the place to spend the political capital (on either side).

Democrats have used the tactic too (I don't have examples, but I heard that on NPR this morning :), and I wasn't at all shocked).

As for the Supreme Court...I think Roberts will go through fine. Not because the Dems want it, but b/c I don't know that they can filibuster until the mid-term elections. And even then, it might not matter. As unbelievable as it is to me (an unaffiliated voter, FWIW), a lot of people actually like this administration.

It depends on what you mean by a lot. Bush's approval ratings are pretty poor. Not just in one poll either. (http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm)
Clinton's ratings weren't any worse even while he was being impeached. Personally, I think it's a media misconception that Bush is a popular president- not an actual truth.

I'm furious at this. The complete disregard for the qualities needed for this position, the willingness to ignore the counsel of senior members of his own party, the blatant disrespect for the Constitutionally-mandated role of the Senate - Bush has managed to surprise me at last.
