Schedule - I think she's on a pretty standard schedule that just kind of fell into place. She does however take the longer sleep stretch at 9:00 rather than 12:00ish.
7:00am wake
9:00 - 10:30 morning nap
12:30 - 1:00 noon nap
sometime between 4:00 - 6:00 catnap
7:30 bath
8:30 bedtime (still waking for a snack at around 11:00pm and waking for comfort at 2:00am)
DD has to cry as well, rocking and eating won't do it for her anymore. It usually last about 5 min and is that moany, sleepy cry.

Solids, Thanks for those that responded who have similar pooping schedules. I think we're going to start with oatmeal later this week (trying to supplement the iron) and will move to veggies. I wanted to wait another month but DD is really feeling frustrated around the table. Is anyone trying some of the higher calorie foods such as yogurt or kefir? How about avocado?

VMB, I would try out the transition. I've was surprised to see C totally turned off to motion lately, maybe this is happening on your end too.

schedule: She's only 4.5 months so not an older baby and it's not much of a schedule, but this is what she does!
between 8-10pm go to sleep
between 3-5am wake to eat
betgween 6-7am wakes again and I bring her into bed to sleep with me until I get up for the day (around 8:15 usually)
Then she takes 4 naps during the day that last from 45 mins to 90 mins each.

She's totally transitioned into her crib with no sleep positioner but she's still swaddled since she hasn't rolled over yet. Tonight she got almost completely over except for the bottom arm so the swaddle might be gone soon.

loving - with DS we had to just let him cry and figure it out. He was around 5.5 months old at the time. It only took a night or two and then he was fine either way (he was a back sleeper and would turn onto his stomach).

I finally got some pics of N while she's smiling (I usually miss it with our camera's delay). This is during her nudie time - when she gets fussy at night she likes to be naked. It totally calms her down for some reason!

Gernium - We do give avocado every once in awhile. I made a batch and froze it. Actually DS will be having some tonight.

emmjay - Yay on the transition to the crib. Sounds like she might be ready to be deswaddled. Love the pics!

Me - I think PT is really starting to help us because I noticed DS hasn't been tilting at all since Monday. He is pretty much keeping his head midline which is beyond awesome. I'm still doing the stretches and just because he's doing well now does not mean I can stop because as soon as he gets a cold, teeths again, or reaches another milestone we'll be back at square one since those are the times when he will regress back to tilting. He started doing some new annoying tricks this week too. At almost every bottle feeding he starts shaking his head no. He must like the sensation of the nipple running over his two new teeth. And right before he finishes every bottle he starts blowing air back into the bottle to make bubbles. It now takes FOREVER to feed him because of this.

I'm so excited! Ethan fell asleep in his crib last night all by himself! He was almost asleep after nursing when I brought my 2.5 year old in their room to go to bed. I put Ethan in the crib so I could tuck my DD in and sing her a song and Ethan seemed fairly happy so I told my DD that Ethan might cry and that was ok and Mommy would come and get him. Then I left and listened at the door for a little while. He made sleepy fussy noises for about 10 minutes off and on before it was quiet. Then he slept for 8 hours and woke at 5am, I brought him to bed with me to nurse and he slept with me until I got out of bed at 7am, and kept sleeping until 9:30am. I hope this can be a new trend!

We started DD on rice cereal today. DH and I were so excited but DD seemed less than pleased. I think she just didn't know what to do with her tongue or how to swallow it. Hopefully she'll catch on and enjoy it more.

Sleep continues to be a bit of a struggle. She's been getting up to eat at night every 2-3 hours at night which sucks because she used to give us 4 or 5 hour stretches. Maybe a growth spurt?

FSUSammy
04-04-2008, 07:22 AM
SQ2 - She'll get the hang of eating from a spoon. She just needs practice. She might be going through a growth spurt. She's a day younger than DS and I think he is just now going through a growth spurt but it has affecting his eating during the day not really his sleep.

Me - I think we might be going through another growth spurt. Since DS goes to daycare at my office I'm able to pop in and see him whenever I want. Well I usually time my visits around when I know he'll be eating. So yesterday I go down around his feeding and he normally eats 6oz he started fussing BAD before it was time to eat, so much so we ended up feeding him a couple of minutes early (not a big deal of course). Then when I stopped midway to burp him he was fussing again so I got a quick burp out and had to give him the bottle fast. He gulped down the entire bottle and started fussing for more. So the ladies made an additional 3 oz and he drank that too! So he had a total of 9oz in one feeding!!! But then last night when it came time to give him his solids he was not wanting any of it and I ended up only giving him 3 oz of formula before he started to doze off. My guess is growth spurt, I sure hope I'm right so that this will be over soon.

sq2 - She'll get the hang of the new taste of rice cereal and will learn very quickly to eat with a spoon. Don't you just love the faces they make when they try something new, though?

daisysue - That's great that Ethan fell asleep all by himself! That's a huge milestone!

schedule - A typical day goes like this:

8-8:30AM - wake up, eat anywhere from 6-8oz bottle
10-11AM - cat-nap during Stroller Strides
12PM - Lunch (1/2 jar of first food, 4-6oz bottle)
1PM - Pick up big sis from school, go down for nap as soon as we get home
5PM - wake up, eat about 6oz
6PM - bath
6:30 - another 4-6oz bottle
7PM - bedtime

We didn't go to Stroller Strides today, so she's actually getting to nap in her bed, which I know she's so excited about. It's so funny because with DD#1, I was a complete nut about making sure that she napped at home every time. Now, this poor child has had to adjust to napping when and where she can...makes for a very laid back baby, but I do feel bad for her that she can't be home for every nap.

teeth - They're really starting to bother her now. She had a really hard time falling asleep last night and I had to eventually let her CIO. I see the little nubs, so they're close, but I can't wait for them to come through all the way.

DD finally mastered rolling both ways so she's a rolling fool. She only rolls in one direction though so she usually makes it halfway across the living room and gets stuck up against something and starts whining. I've been after DS to keep all his small toys off the ground now and it's not going to be fun trying to make sure he can reach them, but she can't. Still not sure what to do about that. Gotta start thinking about baby proofing pretty soon.

Sleep sucks big time. She's great at putting herself to sleep, but her gas/pooping problem wakes her up all the time. She's usually up 4 times a night these days. Hopefully I'll figure out what to eat one of these days. I'm trying to do it quickly so I can get her started on solids by 7 months. We'll see what happens. She is still just taking 2 longer naps a day for the most part, which is actually kind of nice. Her schedule is still pretty random now that she's started to go to 2 naps a day so I never know when she's going to wake up or nap or go to bed.

We went ahead and started with cereal. She was getting frustrated one night while we were eating and I think it's b/c she wanted some! So I mixed up some cereal and sure enough she swallowed it right down!

Here she is:

cat lover...me too. I'm so excited for spring and I keep eyeing swimming suits for DD and then I realize that we dont' have anywhere to swim and it would require me to wear a swimsuit too. ACK!

So DD seems to be mastering the sitting up thing. She's not perfect by any means but she was on her own for 1/2 hour and maybe fell over 2 or 3 times. A couple times she started to fall over and righted herself before I could. I was WAY impressed. It's also the first real time she's had a chance to sit on a hard surface (ie the floor) because normally she's been practicing on the bed or the ottoman.

We practiced rolling over but she doesn't seem interested in doing it on her own. Though she does get a big smile on her face when she does it with my help.

That's all that's new here. Oh, her 6 month WBV is Thursday and at her 5 month, the doctor said they were going to draw blood to check her iron levels because she needs to start a vitamin with flouride and needed to determine if she needed iron in there as well. Anyone know anything about this or go through this? I have to decide if I want her to draw the blood which insurance won't cover so it would cost $30 or I can take her to the quest lab and do it there. I'm inclined to go to Quest because I know they're awesome on me and I know they do a lot of babies and it's all they do, you know? It's not about the money at all. But it does mean an extra trip somewhere? I don't know...anyone have thoughts?

Geranium Thanks! I'm not sure if it's motion or if she's now confused that she's in the same room as at night, but not in her crib...? I'm going to start this week when I'm home for all her naps starting Thrusday. Should be interesting!

emmjay N is such a cutie! I love the naked time! If our house was warmer I'd do it with Nissa too. She's such an exhibitionist!

daisysue Congrats on Ethan putting himself to sleep like that! It must be a huge relief! DD spent 2 nights crying for 40 minutes plus, but then slept for 6-7 hours . And last night just put herself to bed quietly.....I just can't figure her out!

SQ2 She'll figure out how to use the spoon in no time. It's a totally different action with the tongue than nursing/bottlefeeding. That's why we started DD and DS on spoonfeeding milk when they were about 4-4.5 months old. It took DD about a week to get a hold of it. Now that she gets rice cereal and oatmeal, it takes a few spoonfuls at each feeding and she's eating like a pro! Actually, she dive-bombs the spoon, since apparently I am not getting the food to her fast enough!

Peever I'm so sorry about her sleep. I definately feel your pain. With the exceptions of the last 3 nights, DD has been a 4hour(if we're lucky) sleeper. Of course DH left early this AM for the week, which means she won't sleep all week! I hope you guys can figure out her allergies/eating soo so that both of you can be more comfortable and get more rest!!

Wendy what a cutie! I love the hair!!!

honeygirl such sweet pics! Enjoy while she's not fighting you on the shades! :) DS now only wants to wear adult sunglasses, but I guess I should be happy he'll still wear some...

We had some really nice weather here over the weekend finally. I think we were outside all weekend!!! We went to the zoo and ran into so many friends with their kids, we spent 3 hours there chasing toddlers galore. It was so great! DD was either facing front in the Bjorn which she LOVES, but it also tires her out fast, so I turned her around and she snoozed a bit in there.

In honor of the cubs winning 2 in a row, I had to post this... :D

Well, I need some advice. Natalie was a great sleeper at night. We were getting 8 hours and if we fed her before we went to bed, she'd almost sleep till a decent time in the morning. Then she got her cold and she started getting fussy between 4 and 6. After the cold, we got a couple of good nights. And now it's gone again. She's back to getting up at 4 or 5 and I don't know what's going on?

Last night, to ADD to that, we tried to feed her around midnight before we went to bed and she spit up a bunch and then didn't finish her bottle. But she was in fine spirits so we thought it was a fluke. Then she woke up at 3:30 so I fed her. She took the whole bottle this time but then when I finally got her to burp, she spit up bad. Had to change my shirt and my pants! Then at 8, she went back to spitting and not finishing her bottle. But she still seems pretty happy and content.

Suggestions? I hope the spitting thing is short lived because she'd been doing MUCh better in that department lately! I also hope she's not sick or anything. But what's with the sleep? If it's not from being congested, what's going on? Growth Spurt? Teething? She'll be six months on Thursday. And yes, we'll talk to the doctor but you girls know what's going on in the real world!

Jenn ~ It sounds like she has the stomach bug that DS had a week ago. He couldn't keep anything down and was vomiting about every 3 hours. Is her vomit kind of mucusy? Has she had any diarrhea or a fever? DS acted fine for the most part, except right before he would spit up he would get fussy (which made sense since his tummy was hurting!) You want to make sure she stays hydrated (at least one wet diaper every 8 hours) and I tried feeding DS in smaller increments which helped a little. The dr said it was viral and we just had to wait it out. It lasted about 36 hours total.

Jenn - Sounds like a stomach bug to me too. Mikey had that about a month ago. You might want to give her some pedialyte if she's not taking her entire bottle. Give her that at first alone (best to get the unflavored kind) and then slowly reintroduce her formula.

Me - We have a BIG time roller over here. On Friday since I work from home I had Mikey behind me on the floor with his toys. All of a sudden I find him hanging out under my chair, he rolled over the chair leg too but was fine. So later that night we made a run to Lowes for some stuff and decided to get those foam blocks and I cleared out room in our living room and put down the blocks. All day Saturday he was on the floor rolling all over the blocks. And then that night we put him in his crib and he was still awake. I went to check on him since he was making noise and I find that he has rolled to his belly and he's just perched up looking around the room. It was so funny I had to run and call DH to come see for himself.

Here's a pic I took of the little dude last week showing his two front teeth:

VMB - I would tell you how adorable your kids are, but DH is a huge Astros fan so I'd better not. ;)

N rolled over for the first time tonight! She finally figured out how to get her bottom arm out from underneath her. It happened during her naked time, so maybe her gigantic cloth diapers are impeding her when she's clothed. Oh, and she's finally picking her head way up and kind of pushing up during tummy time. I guess she's just on a different schedule than her brother was (I'm not sure why I would think otherwise!).

Can I just say how much easier and better my life has gotten now that Reed can sit up well enough for me to leave him like that (relatively) unattended for long periods of time!!? I forgot how much easier it is for them to play with toys and enjoy the world around them when they are upright.

He sat playing with his brother's tool kit and eating suspenders for about 30 minutes today:

Not sure it's the stomach bug. She's not fussy, it doesn't seem like vomit...just formula spit up. No sign of fever or diarhea. And she's still taking four ounces or so and doesn't seem hungry at all. She seems to have done better at daycare today. I was way surprised that she made it home in the same outfit I took her in. But tonight we've had some more spitting and she didn't finish her bottle. Weird. We'll see what happens. She's going to the doc anyway on Thursday.

emmjay I totally understand....usually the Astros beat up on the Cubs, so I'm trying to enjoy this :)

Jenn I'm not sure that she's just not spitting up. DD started spitting up more as she got older - around 4 months (unlike DS who was yurping constantly from birth). Then she probably wakes up because she's hungry. Nissa always gets all fussy and crabby and yurps all over me. I've never really thought it was a stomach bug - maybe because the spit up has been pretty consistent...

Ok, the teething can stop now please!

DH has been teething like a maniac and developed a bad case of diarrea from it, which lasted about a week which created a really bad diaper rash. (the rash was probably not helped by the fact he was in disposable diapers for a few weeks instead of cloth) My DD never really had a diaper rash, so I didn't really have a barometer for what a bad one looks like or how long they take to go away. So I took Thatcher to the ped yesterday and he said it was the worst case or diaper rash he had ever seen! :(

I feel so bad for him! He just wails when I change him! The worst part is the ped said it will take about 2 weeks to go away :( Poor thing!

Other than that he has been a little less of an eater than usual, except for solids which he readily inhales at dinner time, it's kinda funny.

He also started getting up on all 4's this weekend sticking his butt in the air like he wanted to start crawling...not ready for that one yet!

Adorable pics of all the babies mommies!!

We had a busy weekend of "firsts"! Ethan had his first hair cut on Saturday afternoon followed by his first taste of solids that evening (sweet potatoes). He seems to like the sweet potatoes when Daddy feeds them to him but I don't have as much luck. Guess he still associates me with nursing! I pumped some BM to thin down the sweet potatoes which worked very well. We had him baptized on Sunday since both sets of our parents were able to attend which was nice. He wore a 120 year old family baptism gown that my Dh was baptized in. He only wore it for pictures at home and then for the actual baptism to prevent any damage to the gown. He managed to spit up all over the pastor, baptismal fount, and the floor which was pretty amusing. Guess he baptized the pastor before he baptized him! Good thing our pastor is well acquainted with spit up, he has a 3 year old and a baby girl due in 8 weeks :)

Daisy - What a busy weekend for Ethan! Love the pics.

gardenmommy - Did your ped give you anything for the diaper rash? My older DD has had some doozies, and what works really well is to mix anti-fungal cream (for jock-itch or athlete's foot) with diaper rash cream. My DD has had some rashes that ended up with open sores, so I can totally relate. The mixture of the anti-fungal cream and diaper rash cream usually clears it up within a day or two. That, and make sure that his bottom is completely dry before putting on a fresh diaper.

Us - Amelia is doing great. Still teething like crazy, but still no teeth. She's such a good sport about it though. She's not sitting yet, but is getting very close. We have her 6 month appointment on Friday, and I'm hoping that she's gained a good amount of weight in the past 2 months. Keep your fingers crossed!

Have a good day all!

Am I the only one with this nutty jones?

Daisy, Ethan is cute....wow...a first haircut already? N has some of her original hair that should probably be cut since it's kind of in her eyes but I can't bear to part with it yet.

Sammy, so maybe it is the stomach bug? She seems to be getting better though. Not as much spit up as before!

VMB, that's why it's hard. I'm so used to her spitting and she's gotten much better about spitting lately so I thought maybe she had just regressed.

Garden, sorry about the diaper rash. YIKES!

Liv, can you describe her teething symptoms? I feel like N could easily be teething but we haven't seen or felt anything on her gumline!

Wendelah, no...I think I'm there too. I keep thinking about having another. I keep going back and forth. I don't want them to be too close together and I'm not ready to take care of two but I'm almost 36 so I worry about complications if I wait any longer. It's also hard because N is SO great that part of me wants another kid this great and part of me is worried the second one could never live up to how great the first one is.

US: So Natalie is doing better. Less spitting up than the last couple of days so it could be a stomach bug, it could be teething. I may never know. She also could be going through a growth spurt so I am confused. She got up twice last night which is REALLY rare (3am and 6am is bad for non-morning parents!) and I long for those weeks when she would sleep midnight to 8 before her cold ruined it all.

I didn't get any responses about the flouride/iron check at the six month appointments. Does that mean I'm the only one dealing with this? Her appt. is tomorrow.

Anyone have any sleep advice? I know some of you swear by the sleep books. Is anyone else just winging it? My DH saw something on TV about children soothing themselves to sleep so he's on a kick now but I know he won't read the book if we had it! I also know that she goes to sleep just fine when she's actually tired!!! I think we need to try keeping her awake longer so she'll go to sleep on her own and for longer. She still naps for different lengths of time between every meal!

Other than that, I am so in love with her. My DH snored loudly last night and it startled her and she hit me in the face. I was laughing really hard and trying not to wake either of them up. Need to take (and post) more pics. Can't believe she'll be six months tomorrow. It's going SO fast!

Wendalah ~ Yes. :) LOL!

Daisy ~ Gosh, a first haircut already! He's adorable!

Jenn ~ My ped didn't mention anything about a flouride/iron check at the next appt, so I have no idea. Also, just a comment on keeping DD awake longer...that usually results in an overtired baby who is so tired that she can't easily settle in and put herself to sleep (according to Weissbluth). And, their daytime sleeping doesn't usually start to consolidate and become regular until around 6 months or so, so I wouldn't worry too much about that yet. JMO. ;)

Wendalah - Yup, you're nutty! I can't imagine being pregnant again right now. I finally have my body back and am loving every minute with my DD. I'm not ready to share me or her with another baby.

Daisy - Look at all that hair! What a cutie. I think it's amazing that you have such a beautiful and old heirloom.

Jenn - I haven't heard anything about fluoride. In fact I thought they weren't supposed to have fluoride till after 1yr? As for sleep, like you said our DD does the best when she's tired. I don't put her down (usually) at one specific time, I wait till she's tired. It tends to be around the same time each night though.

Jenn~ The best sleeping tip I've read is that "sleep begets sleep". In other words, the better naps and earlier you put a baby down to sleep the better and longer they will sleep in the long run. I've found this to be true with both kids. So instead of pushing back the bedtime maybe try pushing it up?

Ericka_Jarett

Wendalah - it's nice having kids really close in age, but we didn't expect to get 2 newborns. It's nice to see the kids grow together (my Easton (19 months) is finally at the stage that he will come and give his sisters' kisses or hugs. He doesn't get the attention he use to, but we try. Now that the girls are getting older it's a bit easier to give attention all around. At night, I think of how it was before the girls and actually being able to sleep through the night. I know those days are coming again though soon, so it's ok to me. People look at me like I have 3 heads on my shoulders, get told all the time, "wow you have your hands full" (thanks for stating the obvious) Easton was 6 months old when I found out I was due with the girls, he was just over 14 months when they were born.

See, I actually like the idea of having two kids really close in age. This is for a few reasons, one being that I have two sisters who are less than 14 mos apart and they had a lot of fun growing up so close (I am very close to them too, despite being way down the line, but they always had a special bond that I envied). Another reason is I'm going to be 37 next month and I'd like to get going on having another baby before I'm 40. And, finally, I've found I really enjoy all the little basics of childcare. I know it will be challenging to have two babies close in age, but something about it just appeals to me. Two sweet little ones to care for :D

wendalah - Definitely nutty. LOL I've thought about it but my thinking is this time next year we will start trying LOL.

sleep - We are winging it. DS soothes himself to sleep so we never really had any problems with him. I'm not sure how I got so lucky.

Me - Today was a milestone for ME! I went to my last PPD therapy session. My therapist asked me what I thought about terminating our sessions and I told her I was ok with it as long as I could get back in if something were to ever come up. I'm so proud of myself for coming this far.

FSU - Congratulations! That is a huge milestone.

Wendalah - I say go for it! It's not for everyone, but if you think you can do it, you should. I think it would be a lot of fun to have kids close in age. And yeah, I'm totally starting to think about having another one, especially since my sister just told me she's pregnant with her 3rd. Baby bug is biting me again!

Jenn - Like daisysue, I'm a complete believer in the "sleep begets sleep" theory. I found that with DD#1, if she got over-tired or didn't get enough sleep, she would have an even harder time falling asleep and staying asleep...just too much going on in her little brain. So, with DD#2, I've naturally gone into the same type of sleep schedule that I had with DD#1, and I've got an almost 6 month old who sleeps from 7PM-8AM every night (I hope I'm not jinksing anything, LOL), and who takes about 4-5 hours worth of naps during the day.

teething symptoms - Drooling buckets, chewing on hands, swollen gums, runny poops. I hope this helps!

OK, girls are sleeping, so it's time for me to go do some laundry. Good times!

Aunt Liz - we have all those teething symptoms too right now. It's murder having 3 kids teething at the same time. I think the girls will be cutting teeth like Easton, 2 at time (although right now he seems to be working on all 4 of his 2 year molars at once.

Wendalah - I always wanted to have all my kids by 35, after Easton, right before I found out I was pregnant we had just talked about waiting until he was 2 (would be before I was 35) but God had other plans. We are now done, I loved my last pregnancy more than Easton's but that's because it was different in many aspects. Since I had twins already, my chances increase of having another set, don't want to risk that at all, and honestly 4 kids with one in Heaven is plenty for us. I will miss the newborn stage but now is when the are so fun, watching them learn and grow. Since I will be 34 on Saturday, I am comfortable not being pregnant again. You have to do what you feel comfortable with. It's nice knowing we will be out of the diaper and formula stage pretty close together and the "infant" things will be replaced with toddler toys

wendalah: not crazy at all, we already know we want our next one April/May 2010 if things go according to plan.

Sleep: I am totally in agreement that earlier to bed means a better sleeper. it might take a couple of night through of them to realise it is bedtime and not another nap.

wendalah - we started TTC #2 when DS was around 5 months (and were successful the following month), so I felt the same way at this point last time around. My sister and I are 16 months apart, and DH and I wanted to be done by 35 too. I really love having them so close in age because they are so cute together, and there's all of the practical stuff about being done with diapers/bottles/etc. sooner. Plus I didn't want to still be doing the infant stage at 40. Not that there's anything wrong with having kids around 40; I mean I didn't want to start at 34 and be back to doing baby stuff 6 years later.

I will say it was freaking hard at the beginning. I don't know how Ericka does it with twins, not to mention they're even closer than mine are! I was kind of shocked at how hard it was. Mostly because DS was so super easy and DD, while pretty good, wasn't like him - he STTN by 3 months, she still doesn't. He was mellow and hardly fussed, she had reflux and wanted to be held constantly. But now it's a lot easier and I'm glad to have them so close together. The benefits far outweigh the negatives, IMO.

We're done now. I never wanted more than 2, and now that we have them DH doesn't want more either. Although sometimes I wonder what would happen if we had an "oops". I used to think I would be really upset but now I think I'd be OK with it. But we're definitely not going to try!

Oh hell, lady, do I hear you on this. That's another thing: I'd kind of like to have another newborn while the knowledge of what it's like to have a newborn is still fresh in my mind. I just will feel more prepared and "used to it," I think.

But, then again, I really have no idea what it's like to parent a toddler. I should probably get a bead on that before I do anything rash ;)

Still...I look at this sweet little face:

And my mind screams, "AWW, I WANT ANOTHER!" :o
