How many trick-or-treaters have you gotten so far?
It's just about 7 pm and so far we have gotten one little ninja and a cat.

It's been a slow year so far... Too many town parties / library trick-or-treating, etc. I guess.

Just so I can live vicariously through others, what witches, goblins or ghouls have come calling at your house so far?

It's 6:30 here, and we've had ZERO visitors. Last year we'd had a few by this time.

Six, so far. We were supposed to be on the road to the drop zone already, but having RV issues...so thank goodness we decided to get candy at the last minute! Someone was dressed as Spicoli! I'm like, "You're 12. How do you know who that is?" LOL

We had about 100-110. Its hard to be exact because DH was raiding the candy bowl!

Sadly...0...Same number as last year and the year before that. I miss the days when it was considered safe to trick-or-treat...

Did you know that apparently there is no known case of a stranger's candy/treat harming a child on Halloween? My DH told me that last night. I'll have to see if he can remember where he read that.

LOL, yeah I'm 25 and don't know who that is.

It's a character from the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High LOL.

I'm visiting Georgia right now, and I've noticed that in this particular neighborhood a lot of the parents are driving their kids around. They'll stop, let the kids do a few houses, the kids load back up and then they do a few more. It's not cold out. The neighborhood is very nice and safe. The most fun part was walking around! The guy I'm seeing tells me that's how they do it here. Is this the new thing?

7:45 and we've had about 25-30...way down from last year, but more seem to be coming in the last 10 minutes or so. The time change is later this year so the kids seem to be out later, usually by now they are winding down not picking up

I'm a little surprised at how unoriginal the costumes seem this year, I haven't seen any that truely impressed me and that's unusual.

16 so far. Everyone from a tiny little dinosaur to Hannah Montana.

ETA- driving around
Every year I see a few parents who do this but pretty much everyone just hoofs it in our neighborhood. I agree, walking house to house was one of the best parts.

We've had none and never have since we lived in this house. Kind of sad actually, but we live on a busy street with no sidewalk. We buy candy every year just in case.

We usually get about 300+. This year we were around 100-150.

Zero. From my window I can see tons of kids walking around the neighborhood, but no one is visiting my apartment building. Good thing I bought so much candy.

About 30. We have a Halloween parade for the local kids where people just sit by the sidewalk and give out candy. It makes it easier for parents and neighbors alike. About 20 of them were from that parade.

Best costume so far was yoda.

Its 8:10 and we have ZERO. Of course DH and I didn't get home until 6:30 so maybe everyone stopped by while we were still at work.

We've gotten a ton. The little kids were adorable. The scariest Halloween thing I saw today was a very pregnant teen that trick or treated at our door. It wasn't a costume.

Our city did TOT-ing last night and we didn't get a single one for the 4th year in a row. :( I live on a dead end up a steep hill with no sidewalks so the kids don't think it is worth coming up here. Too bad, 'cause we would give the ones that do brave the trek TONS of candy that we buy *just in case*.

Our neighborhood is still being built so I'm not expecting much, if anything. I highly doubt parents are going to bother trick or treating on 2 measly streets.

Oh well, more candy for me!

None yet and it's 6:30. We only got a few last year - 5 or 6 maybe. I still bought 2 bags of candy, just in case...

My parents (in a different state) ran out after 8 big bags of candy and spent the rest of the evening hiding upstairs! ;)

7:45 and we're out of candy!

I'm not sure how many individual ToTers we had--DD1 was in charge of giving out candy and I didn't ask her to keep track.

jay&erinn
10-31-2007, 05:51 PM
We had about 150-200. It's a decent neighborhood but still in the city (the houses are fairly close together) so the kids are dropped off from other neighborhoods, plus there are tons of kids in this neighborhood. My DD probably has 8 pounds of candy from 1.5 hours of TOTing. Guess I need to start eating;)

10-31-2007, 05:53 PM
None for us, either. We live just outside of town, so I didn't really expect any. DH said he saw a ton of them walking around on his way home from work. I wish they would make it out this far, but the sidewalk ends a few houses down from us, so I understand.

Aimee

None and it's almost 8pm. We live in a section of condos, within a larger neighborhood, and in the 4 years we've been here, we've gotten maybe 2 kids.

December27JJB
10-31-2007, 06:09 PM
We got about 60-70 kids! We turned off the lights at 8:45 because DD was so tired and wanted to go to bed. There are still people from other neighborhoods driving around and dropping off older kids.

ETA: One kid came as Gandhi and he asked DH who he thought he was dressed as. DH guessed Gandhi and the kid said, "Finally! Someone figured out who I am!"

Sadly, I've noticed this too. I first noticed it last year and thought it was absurd. This year was worse. I live in a nice, new development. We're not in the inner city, and it is not at all an unsafe neighborhood, so it just boggles my mind that parents actually allow this. In fact, I wrote the following in my blog tonight (the blog is only for my family and close friends - so no link ;))

And the grand prize Thumbs Down award goes to....all the parents who are actually chauffering their kids from door to door in vehicles. What happened to letting kids experience the joy of running from house to house on Halloween night? Yes, I realize that it's a bit windy and cold out tonight. So what? A little cold never hurt anyone. For the 2nd year in a row, I am scratching my head as I watch SUVs, mini-vans, and even golf carts pull up in front of my house. A bunch of kids will hop out of the vehicle, run up to get candy from me, and then run back down the driveway and hop back in the vehicle. Mom and/or Dad will slowly drive to the next house where they lather, rinse, and repeat. Last year, we actually had a dad chauffer his kids up to our front door on his John Deere lawn tractor. I dunno, maybe I'm missing something, but it just doesn't seem like Halloween when the kids are driven around like that. (Is it any wonder that our nation has so many overweight kids? If they can't even walk door-to-door on Halloween night...) Maybe I'm a Halloween Scrooge, but I'm glad DH and DD are out there walking/running from house to house. That's what it's all about!

It is 6:30 and we have had none, i am quite surprised. This is our first halloween in our house, so i don't know what it is generally like. I thought it would be busy, our area has tons of cul de sacs and not a lot of traffic. Hopefully it picks up. However, it is good for my dog, he is upstairs watching tv with my dh and the door is closed. He doesn't do well with the doorbell.

Kristy
10-31-2007, 06:47 PM
I should have kept track, but I'd say less than 20. I'm bummed. This is our first Halloween in our house, and we're in a decent neighborhood with lots of families with children. I didn't even see any kids I knew. I made DH run out to buy more candy because I was sure we'd run out, and nada.

Costumes weren't really even that creative, either. I saw the same Scream guy mask about 10 times.

ETA: We finally turned off our outside decorations and lights at about 9, but most of the neighbors didn't, and still no kids.

Loud_curly
10-31-2007, 07:01 PM

At least 100.

It's 7:30, and we've had just one. I'm bummed. We've never had that many (hardly any kids in the neighborhood), but this is the fewest ever. :( So many businesses do TOTing now. I miss the days when all the kids roamed the neighborhoods.

DallasLady
10-31-2007, 07:23 PM
Ours really picked up as it got darker. I think Daylight Savings Time being pushed back affected when the kids came out. I didn't keep a complete count, but we gave out all our candy.

lovebugs2003

we have had about 25 now, and like Kristy said, costumes are boring. Miss the old days.

So when do you shut it down?

Noniitis
10-31-2007, 08:24 PM
We had 48 TOTer then we shut the lights off at 8pm. Our neighborhood was full of kids when we were out ToTing with DS. The later it got I noticed parents driving slowly down the middle of the street and the kids walking from house to house.... um the houses are pretty close together I think even though it was a little chilly you can get out and walk that is the fun of Halloween...

10-31-2007, 08:39 PM
8:30 here & we've had 18 TOTs so far. I'm a little disappointed. For the past 6 years I lived in a small condo development that had a gate at the entrance that closed at dusk (thus preventing kids from the neighborhood around us from getting in) so we were lucky to get 3-4 each year. But this year we're in our new house right across the street from a big apartment complex that is full of kids, so I assumed we'd get a ton. I guess 18 isn't too bad, but I sure bought enough candy for a lot more than that! :D The last group of 4 kids got big handfuls of candy, whereas the ones who came earlier just got a few pieces. :p

Ditto here on the unimpressive costumes. I haven't seen one yet that I thought was particularly cool or creative. My favorites are the really little kids in their fuzzy little ducky costumes, etc. :)

We left the house at 5pm and returned at 8pm. I put out a bowl with 150 pieces of candy and another bowl with 25 bags of Pirate's Booty/organic cookies. When we got home, both bowls were completely empty. We've gotten NO ToTers since 8pm and it's now 8:55pm.

We had 5 and 4 of them were family/friends. The one lone TOTer showed up at the end of the night and I unloaded our stash on him. The little boy thought it was great. DH was counting on left overs but I don't need all of that junk tempting me.

None. We weren't planning on any though, so it wasn't a surprise. Our neighborhood is ... transitional ... and there aren't that many kids around. The few "kids" that I did see out were high schoolers that weren't really dressed up. Putting on a pair of pair of devil horns with your regular clothes does not count as a costume! Anyway, they didn't even come down to our street. Maybe next year, if the neighborhood continues to improve. I have no plans for kids in the near future, but I hope that by the time we have some we'll be able to walk around with them.

11-01-2007, 04:47 AM
We had 2 groups for a total of 6 kids. Someone came and knocked on our door around 9pm after we turned the lights out and I was trying to put DS to bed.

I'm not surprised, because we're on a quiet road and the houses are spaced out. All the kids were on the 2 streets parallel to ours where there are more houses.

I saw two tractors out pulling hay rides with ToTers to the houses. I thought that was cool.

We had 1. It was our next door neighbors kid, A. DH likes to get the full bars of candy and A took 2 then started to take more. I didn't know how many kids we were getting so I had to tell him that's enough. Now I wish he took it all!

Not sure how many we had - but not as many as past years.

And seriously, I was about to wring the neck of the little tweener that rang my bell and set the dog off at 8:45. My light had been off for almost an hour at that point. We had JUST gotten DS to sleep. And, the little $hit had already been to our house once!! DH said he felt really old telling the kid to go home!!

11-01-2007, 06:10 AM
We had about 100 -- probably a bit more (I wasn't very good at keeping the tally).

Best costume of the night? The last group of kids who came were teenagers, and one of them was dressed up as Dark Helmet. I'm not even sure how he knew about Space Balls, but I thought it was awesome!

We didn't have any. However, we left our house to trick or treat in our friends neighborhood around 5:30ish, and didn't get home till 10:30. The cutest costume I saw last night were a pair of girls (maybe 8 years old) that were a pair of dice. They were so cute!

We probably had about 20 different groups. Usually we don't get many, but I guess the whole 8th grade in our town decided to go out this year.
Thankfully we had bought 5-6 bags of candy.

Vent: Okay, I think 13 was the last year I went TOT. But at least I put on a costume. These older kids feel that they can throw on their pjs and some face paint (if even that) and go out. I didn't say anything, but I was pretty annoyed.

We probably had about 30-40 trick or treaters. Not too bad for this area. It is very popular here to go TOT at the local malls or zoo, usually because it is freezing cold. Last year, it was 20 degrees, very windy and we had about 5 trick or treaters.

I don't know the exact number but we had a lot. Of course, it probably had something to do with DH's spooky house setup. ;) Overall I'd say we definitely had way more than last year. The thing that annoyed me was that the tot-ers started showing up at 6:30! We were just finishing up scarfing down pizza and DH hadn't gotten everythign set up when our first few arrived. It's too early IMO. Give people some time to get home from work, eat, etc. before knocking on doors.

re: no-costumers - Interestingly enough, in my neighborhood we had fewer of these than before. What made me sad though was seeing small children (<8) with no costumes. I felt bad that their parents either didn't take the time or didn't have the money to dress them up.

We got ZERO. We live in a decent sized neighborhood, too. I suspect our very sloped driveway is the culprit. No way in hell would I walk down it and back up just for some candy myself! We also don't have any street lights in our neighborhood, so that could be a contributing factor.

cgmom313
11-01-2007, 07:25 AM
We probably had well over 100.

We had a few groups of older kids. Some dressed up and some as you all have said not really dressed up. For those that are dressed up they got the standard I give out 2 pieces of candy and a dum dum lollipop. The kids that are not dressed up but just in it for the candy on gets 1 piece of candy.

We had a blast last night. We moved last Nov from FL to a small town in Ohio and it was such a different seen last night then Florida.

11-01-2007, 07:32 AM
We only had about 15 kids total. That is was more than we have ever had before in the 3 years we have lived here.

We were talking to our neighbors while we were out with our DS she was expressing how sad it was that there weren't any kids out. Back when we were kids there were always 100s of kiddos walking around neighborhoods TorTing and most everyone in the nieghborhood was giving out candy. Now 70% of the houses don't have lights on and everyone takes their kids to the mall or to Halloween festivals instead of in the nieghborhoods. It is kinda sad to see that traditional fall away.

Chelsea524
11-01-2007, 07:33 AM
We went through 3 bags of 150 pieces of candy each, gave each kid 1-2 pieces so probably just over 200 kids. It was a solid stream of kids, my DH didn't even bother shutting the door between each of them. We live in a nicer nieghborhood compared to the little grandma homes around us so a lot of people come from the other nieghborhoods to TOT ours. SIL came with her kids to go around with me and kept commenting that she had never seen so many kids out. I love it, but I do have the older kids coming, we had two that looked like they were at least in their early 20s, come on, you don't have anything better to do on Halloween?

ETA: I always have a bowl of candy for the older kids, usually a dum dum sucker or the cheapest candy I can find, the little kids get the good stuff.

I had three.

However, I went over to my sil's house after 9 and the teenagers would not stop coming. Even though the lights were out because the baby was in bed, they would ring the doorbell and pound on the windows until someone answered the door. It was a little scary as she lives in a pretty rough neighborhood. They were always in large groups of 10+.

We estimate we had about 200. I'm glad I overbought on the candy!!! Busiest time for us was about 6 to 7:30...we turned off the light by about 7:45 because it was starting to be 17 and 18 year old kids and well, no.

11-01-2007, 08:54 AM
Almost 20, a new high for us. Although that counts the group of 9 teenagers not in real costumes. Whatever. All the leftover candy goes with DH to work to be given to his kids, and as a high school teacher, that means non-costumed teenagers. (But DH wants to put up a sign next year: No costume, no candy)

I drove through my parent's neighborhood on the way home (~2 miles away) and got to see dozens and dozens of costumed, young TOTers.

About 20 total. And that's the most we've gotten since we moved here 4 years ago! :(

I don't really understand why we have so few. We live in a small city west of Boston, in a neighborhood downtown.

Heather - My parents had that at their house too. Tons of kids being driven around by their parents the whole time. They had about 150. It happened a little where I lived growing up, but seems to happen more now. And it was not cold there last night either.

We had a big old 0 - but we kind of live well out of the way in a condo complex - so that doesn't surprise me at all! :p

We get hundreds every year, this year was no exception. And a lot of them are the "drop offs" -- parents who drive their kids to our neighborhood to trick-or-treat. We live in a single family home area of a city so while the rest of the city is not t-o-t friendly (mostly apartments, high rises, condos), our small neighborhood definitely is. Plus everyone on our block gives away the full size candy bars so the kids come in droves!

We didn't have any. :( I didn't expect to, but I still kinda hoped we might.

We got quite a few. I didn't take a count but we had 3 regular size bags of candy and two of the giant ones, at a rate of two candies per kid we ran out about 8:30. I'd estimate somewhere in the neighborhood of 100. This is down considerably from last year.

We had three, which is pretty typical for us. We live in a nice neighborhood with lots of kids, just down the street from an elementary school, so I am always surprised that we don't get more.

My parents live in another state and got 500+. They gave away five giant bags of candy from Sam's and raided all the other candy in the house before giving up and turning out the lights. Kids come in from other neighborhoods, so it's almost all kids being driven around in cars.

We had our very first ToTer last night! In the 5 years we've lived in our house, last night was the first time anyone actually came to our door on Halloween. OK, so it was our next door neighbor. My kids still thought it was super cool.

We had 18, which is a record for us. I made up 20 little treat bags with candy, that's how I kept count. We were out with DD on another street and there were tons of kids, but they didn't come our way.

I was getting worried we would run out of candy since this is the first year I didn't buy bags and bags.

We had none, but then we were not home. Right after work I drove DS to the neighborhood we are moving to in a few months to T or T since it is a real neighborhood where the do TorT and a good chance for him to get used to the idea of living there and to meet a few people in an informal way. We saw T or Ters but not that many, but it was also about dinner time and dark by the time we started. I assume the younger kids go in the late afternoon and the older kids later after dinner, but I guess we will find out next year. Our porch will literally be touching the sidewalk. I doubt may kids will skip a house that does not even require walking up a drive way. Three steps up and there you are at the front door. In our present neighborhood we have never gotten more than one or two T or T's even if we were home (though we would not be home till 5:30 or 6:00). We don't live in that kind of a neighborhood now and are on the second floor of a 4 family building.

I don't get the driving around thing, at least if the weather is decent. Maybe if it raining and you want the kids to get a little bit of the fun of T or Ting. I can see maybe driving to a neighborhood that is better for T or T, parking and then walking. I have a friend who has this happen in his neighborhood because in the "richer" parts of town the houses are so far apart it would take a half hour to hit 3 houses. But driving house to house? Get real. Unless you are afraid to leave your car parked on the street during halloween. As far as safety, if you are driving the kids than you can walk with them and stand at the sidewalk while they go door to door. More work for you as a parent but no less embarrassing for the kids IMO and a more fun and health experience for the kids as well. I think I may have noticed one SUV /van doing the drop off thing in our new neighborhood last night as we were finishing up. I really was not sure what was going on. I just saw a van or something with the back door open and a big crowd of kids around it.
