My sister and I are arguing with our husbands over how a pecan pie is made.

She and I think the pie is filled with pecans, with more pecans on top.

DH and BIL say that it is the pie filling with pecans on top only.

Who's right? DH and I grocery shopped tonight and scouted out the bakery section of the store, but there were no pecan pies out.

The pecans are mixed into the custard and they rise during baking.

I always do chopped pecans mixed in the filling and then arranged pecan halves on the top so it looks pretty.

I only made a pecan pie 1 time and although mixed the pecans throughout the mix, they rose to the top during baking

We actually put all the pecans in the empty shell, then pour the filling over it -- they disperse perfectly while baking, and there is a nice solid pecan layer on top at the end.

Oh, and YUM.

Yep, they rise.

OMG my stomach is growling for a slice of pecan pie right now!

The recipe on the back of a jar of Karo is pretty good. You can also make a bourbon chocolate chip pecan pie which is oh-so-good. I'll try to find the recipe my family uses for that one.

Honestly, the best regular pecan pies I've ever had were from a grocery store freezer. Field's Pecan Pies are the greatest. But I'm not sure if they're regionally available or nationwide. My mom thought for years that my aunt made her pecan pies from scratch each Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then, one day she accidentally spotted the box in the trash.

Thanks for all the replies!

My sister has a pecan tree in her yard and has sent me two huge bags filled with pecans. I'm going to attempt a pie this weekend.

I make pecan pies like Txfish. It's MUCH easier, especially if you're making more than one pie at the time.

Layer the pecans in the empty pie shell and then pour the hot syrup mixture over. The pecans rise and you don't end up with one pie that has lots of pecans and one that hardly has any.
