I posted about 2 months ago about my office closing. I was one of the lucky ones to be chosen to continue on in another office. Monday is the last official work day of office A. Office A is having a farewell party, and all the WAH and people who were asked to continue on in office B on Friday. The party is at noon.
Now my dillema. I want to go. I don't want to seem ungrateful and not go, but the managers said if we do go, and stay for a few hours (leave before our quitting time), we'd have to go home and work. Well, I live like an hour away (w/o traffic), and I wanted to go to the bar with the co-workers for an after party. If I did not have to go straight home, I would have hung around town, and then to the bar. but I don't think I would feel comfortable hanging around the office for 4 hours just to go to the bar, and I wouldn't feel right not going.
HELP!!
TYIA!

Couldn't you go to part of the office party at noon, say noon-2, and then work for 4 hours 'til the bar at 6?

I could....but I llve an hour away. I wouldn't want to leave here in the AM, to get there by noon, turn around, and hopefully be back here in 1 hour, just to turn around and go back. Most people get off at 4:30, and will most likely stay at the bar til about 7, unless they continue the party downtown. I just don't want to go all the way back.
Just a little note, I live in WV(by Bunker Hill, close to the border of VA), and everything is in MD (Frederick)

If you work remotely - can't you use wireless available in Starbucks or something? Or I assume the office still has it's LAN set up, and you could work there?
Or don't you have time off you can take - and just explain the situation to your manager?

So you usually WAH?
Can't you just bring your laptop and work between the party/after-party? either at the office or as a PP suggested, Starbucks or something?
Could you go to the party later, like instead of being there when it starts at noon, could you go from 2-4 then directly out with your friends to the bar?

Sorry, I didn't realize your work situation!
I agree with PPs; just hook up to the company LAN in the office. Or go to someplace with WiFi; I know Panera has WiFi.

Nope, don't have a lap top, just a desk top.
As for working out of the office, no can do, since it's the end of the line for them, they have the computers they are using, everything else is gone.
I think the party is just a lunch, so most likely won't go on all day.
In my heart, I know, go...forget the after party, but on the flip side, it seems a waste to drive an hour each way for some grub :)

Can you make up the time some other way? Work earlier that day and later the next?

What about just going to the after party?

I don't want to have to make up time just cause I want to go drink :)
I thought about just going to the after party, but since my current managers will be at this farewell party, I won't feel right not going to the party. I mean, I was part of that office for longer than some of them!
In my heart, I know going is the right thing to do. I just won't over stay my welcome :)
