My two kittens seem to enjoy scattering their litter all over the floor. I also noticed that they really want to beat up the litter box, a self sweeping model. I have been coming home to little pieces of kitten poop around the litter box as well, a victim in the scattering process  Does anyone have this problem with their cats? Is there anything I can do to get them to not play in the litter box?

Can you get a covered litter box?

Really, that's been our saving grace (four kitties at home right now).

The reason I say that is I've seen some people try and dissuade kitty from scattering and end up doing more harm than good. If the cat is going in the box and is enjoying his/her time in there, let 'em go. Cats are VERY particular about their litter boxes and the environment in which their boxes are located. If you start giving them *any* signal that they aren't safe and/or are not welcome to play as they wish, they may start *ahem* leaving you presents elsewhere. And THAT's not fun. At all. ;)

a covered box would help with that. Litter still gets kicked out through the opening but maybe they won't find it quite as fun to play in a covered box.

ITA with the other posters. There are also little pads you can get at the pet store that sit under the litterbox and catch the litter so it doesn't go too far away. It looks like the same material as those nubby doormats.

That avatar is hilarious jesvet :D

There was a whole thread on this on WC once. There are tons of mats you can buy but amongst all of us, none of the mats that we had all tried seemed to work. We all sweep or keep a dustbuster in the bathroom I think.

You can get a cover for your self sweeping litter box but it's large. They sell them on Drsfostersmith.com.

Hi Beth! I wasn't sure if you were here. Congrats on your recent anniversary.

Our cat is too big for the covered litter box, but we just buy the cheap ones and keep a dust buster in his bathroom. He isn't as bad as he was since most of the litter that gets out is what sticks to his paws now. He used to empty the litter out of the box for fun. I got a doormat and stuck it under part of the litter box so I could just pick it up and dump the litter back into the box. It made it a lot cheaper. Since he could go through what was in the box each day. Now he is old and lazy.

Are these the kittens you got recently? Atleast I think you were the one talking about getting them.

Thanks! We got the mat today and two new scratching posts. The kitties are in kitty Cat Heaven :D

Daniel's Kitty I am so glad to see you made it over here :) Happy 1st anniversary to you and Daniel as well! Yes, I am asking about Beau and Belle our new kittens. They are so much fun, but it is kind of gross walking across the hardwood and stepping in kitty litter :( I sweep and vaccumm it seems like 5 times a day, but it's probably really only 1 or 2 :o Are you due in October? Or did you have the baby already?

Beth I'm due in August. I have a month and a half left. I am now wishing I had waited until Winter so I wouldn't be so hot.
Between the cat and dog I wish we had an automatic sweeping floor, I don't know which one makes a bigger mess of the floor. I know I can blame the cat for the fur all over the furniture though.
