I know nationally they generally have a good reputation but in my development they've been absolutely horrible (I am not a DR Horton homeowner but am in a community with 5 different builders and one of them is Horton). You can PM me to ask about specifics of my community and the development.

DH and I bought a DR Horton home last year. Moved from Florida to New Mexico and all I can say is we will NEVER ever ever ever buy another DR Horton home. Total junk... terrible customer service.. horrible Subs... list goes on and on. A lot of it has to do with this state though. Not many regulations or standards. If you are looking for a mass builder, I have always heard great things about Pulte :)

I work for a consulting firm that advises investors on residential real estate investment, and we have worked with pretty much every builder EXCEPT DRH and Pulte, so I can't give you first hand experience. However, I can tell you that the quality of the builders like Lennar, DRH and Pulte vary from state to state, and even from city to city. Iwould never buy a certain builder's product in Northern CA, but we own the same builder's product in Southern CA. I don't know where you live, but you'll want to look regionally at DRH for a better indicator of how good they are. Find out what their customer service scores are.

Also, contact the DRE in your state for feedback. If they have lots of complaints, that's a sign not to buy. Good luck! :)

Maybe it varies by the price range and/or city, but we bought a DR Horton home (resale - built in '02) and it is very nice. I have no issues with the quality whatsoever. My only complaint is that it is not the most energy efficient, but I think it's just the style of the home - any larger home with very high ceilings is going to be pretty expensive to cool and heat in extreme weather.

Come to think of it, when we first bought the home it was only 2 years old and DRH was still doing some construction in the neighborhood. Our front door gets a lot of direct sunlight and the stain had started to peel and fade. We contacted DRH to find out what product to use to fix it and they sent someone out to stain and seal it free of charge, even knowing that we weren't the original owners. I feel like that's pretty good customer service!

We've had a pretty good experience with them. (house 7 months old) Their lendor was another story, horrible experience! OTH, my friend bought in our same division and ended up with MOLD. Their costume service and resolution was horrible to her.

We rented a brand new DR Horton and absolutely loved it. We are in TX (DFW) and found the home to be very nice, well made and the layout was phenomenal. We would have bought it but it was too far from work for us!

That said, a co-worker bought a DR a couple of subdivisions over and had foundation problems, granite countertop problems, problems with the flooring....DR took care of it all but she still had the issues.
