i so put that originally, then changed it to nc ladies!! Since, we were going to be making plans for get togethers, I thought it would be NC and SC border gals. i didn't realize that there weren't very many SC girls.

i'm going to see if i can change the name. then, if y'all get enough SC girls that you want your own thread, i can change it back.

That's such a pretty area - I grew up just over the border from Boone in Johnson City, TN. I go through Asheville every time I go back to visit my folks - I love it there. We live just outside of Clemson now - husband's in grad school there til August 2006.

This was just posted on our company classifieds site, and I wanted to let y'all know, if you are accessible to Raleigh:

Great dog needs a loving home. Max the beagle needs a good home. I have met this dog and he is a real sweetie. He was basically ignored by his former owners, and ran away to the house across the street! He just wants to love and be loved. He is really 40 pounds and is very lean (doesn't look it in his picture). He is doing very well and would make a great farm dog, a great hang-out-in-the-dog-park dog, indoor/outdoor dog. He can't be all indoor or all outdoor or he goes nuts. He can't stand cats, but other than that, he's great. He's not an alpha dog. Gets along with every kind of dog. He was never taken in the car to anywhere but the vet, so he is learning about "going for a ride." You can meet him at the adopt-a-thons (see his webpage) or contact his foster mom (if you are interested, I'll give you her information).

He is super duper cute, but we don't have room in our apt for another dog. I just wanted to get the word out there since he seems like a great dog.

Either of those nights is good for me! Is it okay if we go somewhere in Southpoint if Bernadette can go? I haven't seen her here yet, but she said she was trying to sign up. She asked if that would be possible when I mentioned this on the WC thread. If she can't go, I'm great w/ CAH again.

I am having to make up some time at work from taking time later in July, so is 6:30pm too late. If so, I can try and work around that.

Anyone else have a preference for the 18th or 19th?

Hey guys! My account was finally activated today so I'm really happy to see you all here. I'd love to meet at Southpoint if anyone else is willing.

I'm still having trouble with avatars for some reason. Can anyone help me? I actually have a picture of my beautiful kitty I want to use and I know the size is too large. Does anyone know how to reduce pictures?

Oh, I forgot to re-introduce for those who don't know me from WC.

Okay, now that we know that 6:30pm in Southpoint is good, we just need to finalize the date. Here are the possibilities:

July 18
July 19

if Tracie finds out she is going to be in town:

July 7
July 8

Like I said before, I'm open to any weeknights, I just need to know so I can work my job schedule around it. I'm off for the weekend in like 5 minutes, so I'll check back in on Monday. I can't wait to see everyone and meet some new peeps!

I think Shellbell516 should have her baby on the 3rd instead of the 4th :)

Anything sounds good to me--I'll be at Virginia Beach on July 16-19 though- so hopefully I'll be able to make it!

Ok, I will be in town for sure the 7th and 8th, I may be doing family stuff, but I'm not sure. I'll talk with my mom tonight, we'll be there while Eric is training for a new position in his company (outside sales) and my parents and I will be seeing my great aunt and my uncle.

If we do something I'll make sure to make it for part of it or at least dessert! Anyone say Cheesecake?
And you can GUARANTEE Eric and I will find PF Changs while we're there.

I can do just about any night--so just lemme know when everyone is planning on getting together!

I forgot, I wanted to ask the Raleigh girls for recommendations on doctors.

I need a Gyno (not sure how it works but we will be TTC in less than a year), eye doctor, main doctor, and a dentist. Any suggestions?? I have the State Health Plan insurance as of right now (sucks!) so I will have to see if the docs are on my list or not. I would like a gyno around Rex since I hear such good things about them!

amtaylor
07-06-2005, 08:06 AM
You can try the Rex website.... they have a doctor search and all the doctors deliver there. I would recommend against Wilkerson OB/Gyn. I had a lot of bad experiences with them. My ob/gyn practice (Cary Women's Center) is AMAZING, but they only delivery at WakeMed Cary. For a dentist... I use to go to Cheryl Siegel (881-9258). I liked her but my husband didn't. We now go to a wonderful dentist and eye doctor in Fuquay, but that might be a little out of the way. I've yet to find a good regular doctor though!

Michelle told me about Dr. Katherine Barrett who is in the Rex Women's Center (in Raleigh and Cary). I REALLY liked her when I saw her. Here is her information. They also have other doctors at the Rex Women's Center. Now that Michelle is on the OB rotation, she might also know of other OB/GYNs that are good in their group.

Katherine Barrett, M.D.
Address:
4420 Lake Boone Trail
Suite 301
Raleigh, NC 27607
Phone: (919) 781-7450

Address:
Rex Cary Medical Office Bldg
1505 SW Cary Parkway, #300
Cary, NC 27511
Phone: (919) 467-2249

I still haven't found a dentist, which is shameful! I see a GI doctor who is listed on my insurance as my primary care physician, so I don't have a general doctor. I also see a Dr. Hardy (also Michelle's rec) as a dermatologist that I really like as well. She is off Blue Ridge in the Blue Ridge Dermatologist Group. Those are the only drs I have right now.

It's actually not looking good for me either, and I just emailed w/ Michelle and she is busy as well.

The 18th or 19th might be better (sorry Tracie!!) for some girls to go out to dinner for me. I think if people can go, maybe we should just do a come to dinner when you can. Bernadette, I don't think we've been able to set a weekend get together w/ DH's. The summer is so busy for everyone.

OB's - Summer, I've met all the docs now at Capital Area OB/GYN and there are 2 women docs. Katie Barrett is my primary OB there, but the other female is Colby Benevides. I really liked her too. I've met 3 of the men doctors and like Kurzmann and Tosky. There's the one man doctor that I really didn't think too much of. He was just lacked in personality. I can't remember his name though.

My friend Carrie goes to:
Mid-Carolina OB/GYN
4420 Lake Boone Trail
Suite 303
Raleigh NC 27607
(919) 781-5510

I don't know the name of her doctor though, but she has said that her appts take a long time to get in and out of. My doctor's office is really fast and I never have to wait a long time.

Here's a link of Rex affiliated OB/GYNs: doctors (http://www.rexhealth.com/centers/birth/physicianlist.htm)

For a primary care physician I go to Blue Ridge Family Physicians (http://www.blueridgefamilyphysicians.com/) and see Edith Struik. She's just a PA though.

I go to Dr. Pezdek for my dentist. Here's his website: Dr. Pezdek (http://www.sedationdentalcare.net/). The only thing I don't like about them is that I have to pay upfront and my insurance will reimburse me instead of the other way around.

By the way, I got to eat at my favorite restaurant at Southpoint this past week. It is called Firebirds. They have the best salad with ranch and their filet is to die for. I vote there if we go to Southpoint.

dh and I moved from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands a month ago today after living there for 2.5 years. We are currently staying in Maryland (where our families live). We went on a road trip to Wilmington, NC last weekend with my best friend and her DH and we each bought houses!

ob/gyn

Also, any tips on life in wilmington and fun things to do besides the obvious???

We are so excited to be there. We loved the area and everyone was so nice.

Karen: Where about in Wilmington will you be? Towards Wrightsville, Monkey Juntion, Pine Valley area? I used a vet called Pine Valley Animal Hospital off Shipyard and I really liked them. I went to a dentist off of 17th Street (can't remember the name). I am not much help but I can tell you some fun things about Wilmington (as can Holly and Tracie). I lived there for 4 years. Just let me know where about you live and I can help more.

Shellbell Thanks I might just do that. I'll be home in NC from July 25th - August 14th but I'll be on the OBX (so unless you ladies want to take a road trip out to me.....?? :D )

I just thought I'dl post a little NC humor.......so much of it is true!

You know you're from North Carolina When.....
1) You've gotten used to the smell of cow manure on a car trip to Raleigh.

2) Saying "y'all" isn't just a cute expression; it actually means something.

3) There are big labrador retrievers in the back of every truck.

4) You give directions using KFC and Waffle House as landmarks.

5) You still see Dale Earndheart tributes on cars.

6) You can't imagine life without Bojangles' sweet tea

7) Your annual church fundraiser always deals with bbq and potato salad

8) You have a sunburn from May to October

9) Your 'heavy winter clothing' consists of some turtleneck sweaters, a fuzzy jacket, and your daddy's boots

10) Your family has fried chicken once a week

11) You can tell the difference between cotton fields and tobacco fields while driving

12) One of your neighbors has a confederate flag hanging on their front porch

13) Those "damn yankees" are taking over your school/church/workplace/neighborhood...

14) You've been "properly raised", and yankees love it when they hear you say "ma'am" and "sir"

15) You get your carbs from biscuits, rolls, pancakes, and grits

16) You know the difference between a "redneck" and a "hick".

17) You own at least one surf shop or seafood restaurant shirts.

18) No matter what those people in ohio say, we are still "first in flight"

19) The Coca-Cola 600 is as big as the Super Bowl

20) You prefer Chick-fil-a to KFC

21) You know pastry is a chicken stew, not a dessert item.

22) Every time you visit someone youre offered something to eat and a glass of tea.

23) Your granddaddy always wore overalls and your grandma always wore an apron.

24) In summer you have home-grown tomatoes with every meal.

25) When it rains and the creek rises, everyone gathers to see how high it rose.

26) You know that "chunk" the ball means to throw it.

27) You've had a burger "all the way" - chili and slaw on it.

28) You can recognize a copperhead and your heart drops when you see one.

29) You have at least one relative that raises collards.

30) Your folks have taken trips to the mountains to look at leaves.

31) Your school classes were cancelled because of a hurricane.

32) You know Krispy Kreme makes the best doughnut.

33) You have an opinion about UNC. You went there and loved it, or you hate everyone who did.

34) You know the best BBQ is found in Lexington

35) You would rather eat at Bojangles's than McDonald's

36) You have actually uttered the phrase "It's too hot to go to the pool"

37) You faithfully drink Pepsi or Mt. Dew everyday of your life.

38) You have your own secret bbq sauce.

39) You or your neighbors have more hunting dogs than you have family members.

thanks summer!! i hope y'all had a wonderful time! sat and sun, we slept in, relaxed and went to the pool. sat night, we really enjoyed 518! last night, we grilled steaks w/ other yummy side dishes and ate on our informal china with candles. it was so fun to be all fancy together. and, TMI, yesterday after the pool, i wore my wedding night nightgown all evening! i figured since i couldn't wear my wedding dress, i'd wear the next closest thing!! it was so glamarous to do laundry and cook dinner in! we ate our cupcakes from the wedding reception that were suprisingly still good!

Jess and i were invited to a wedding in Charleston at 7pm. is anyone in that area (or have been to a wedding in that area) that can tell me about the dress code for a wedding like this. is it common knowledge that this is going to be super fancy. i'm REALLY worried about what to wear, and it is a month away.

Jess only has a light brown suit. we had planned on getting him a black suit in the fall for a conference he's going to, but i'm worried that the material isn't dark enough for the wedding. it isn't khaki colored or anything, but it is a caramel-like brown. he has a blue shirt and a colored tie to go with it.

i think the nicest dress i have (i hope i fit into it!) is a black dress. the problem is that it isn't the best of materials (it came from Express), and it is one of those neck lines that cross over so it is a 'standing dress'. aka, it comes open when i sit, so i'll be fidgeting with it. the only other dress i have is this one from The Loft:
http://s7ondemand1.scene7.com/is/image/AnnTaylorLoft/126410_9000?$outfit$

it is made out of cotton, though, so the material is not at all dressy. help!!

do i need to bit the bullet and explain to DH that we have to get his black suit and get me a dress (or one or the other). how do i tell if the black dress is appropriate, and what should i buy if i can't wear my other dresses.

shellbell516
07-18-2005, 09:26 AM
Paige - Sounds like you had a great anniversary! that was a great idea about wearing your lingerie all evening. I'm not sure about what to wear to the wedding. I'm leaning more towards the black dress. Can you pin it? I'm guessing it's an inside wedding. I wish I had something that you could borrow. I do have a strapless burgandy color 2 piece bridesmaid dress, but it's not a very summery color.

The insurance people will tell you what they cover as far as hospital and doctor's costs. You will have to talk with your human resources person at the county office to find out what type of leave you are eligible for.

Hi y'all. I am a transplant from the midwest and have been living in NC for the last three years.

We just bought our first house in Durham and we are trying to find furniture. We have found a couple of pieces at Pottery Barn/Crate and Barrel Places. My question is if we can find this style of furniture at High Point. We have never been there. Lot of our parents friends have come to High Point to buy furniture but that signals to me that it might be a little too high end or old fashion style for us. Before we make the trip, I want to know if it will be worthwhile.

Any input?

Camdynlyn

Hi, Cynder! We just went through the furniture finding thing. It really sucked. I searched all over High Point and while I found many things, they were way over priced. What we ended up doing was finding a style of furniture we liked and then called our local furniture store (which is known for having awesome prices) and had them order the exact stuff from the manufact. for a fraction of the cost. It is amazing.

Here is the info!

Tony's Furniture Outlet (http://www.tonysfurniture.ypgs.net/aboutus.asp)

I would find what furniture you want and then call them for a price quote. Also, you can go to the websites for the stores in HIgh Point and search websites like Broyhill, Ashley, Ralph Lauren, etc. I walked the entire Furniture place and took pics and wrote down ideas and then took them back to Tony's to check prices.

There is a real estate attorney named Wayne Roper in Raleigh. He is excellent and I would definitely recommend him. As a real estate agent I have had a closing with him in the past, and my husband is a mortgage consultant and he uses Wayne all the time. Here is his info:

Hi ladies,

Sorry to interupt. I am not a NC girl, but have increasingly been thinking of becoming one. At the moment I live in PA and work in the Biopharmaceutical Industry. I was wondering if any of you ladies were in similar fields and could give an idea of what the job market is like down there now. The price of living, especially in the area of Pharm industry, in the Northeast is growing steadily. To the point that in a few years I don't know if it will be practical for DH and I to stay here. I have also heard that the price of houses down there is more reasonable. I am also interested in finding out what there is to do in the Triangle area down there. So can you ladies help me out? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated. TIA!!:D

Camdynlyn

Sha: I can't help you out in that field but I can tell you that I love Raleigh/triangle area. Houses down here (in the burbs of Raleigh-- Apex, Cary, Holly Springs) will run you about $100 per square foot. My good friend just about a 1400 sq. foot home for a little under $140k and our 2711 foot home will run around $95 per sq. foot. I am not sure if that can help you out but we love the area and probably will stay here for a while-- if not forever!

Shamena ~ I'm still thinking on this one about the biopharm industry. Obviously with Duke Medical School and Duke Medical Research being up there w/ Johns Hopkins, there is alot of Pharm Industry. Centering between Chapel Hill (UNC), Durham (Duke) and NC State (Raleigh), is Research Triangle Park. To have a company in the 'Triangle', you have to do mainly research and just some Manufacturing. I'm not sure what area in BioPharm you are in, but there was definitely a hit in the job market w/ the 'recession after 2001'. I have found (I'm a ChemE w/ no experience) it to be very hard to get a good job, but if you have experience, you should be golden. There is GlaxoSmith Kline, Biogen and RTI International (some pharm research only-myself and another CC member work here not in the pharm area). There are ALOT more like Merck in Cary and Wilson (subburbs of Raleigh), but my brain isn't doing it for me this morning.

Here is a website ~ trianglejobs.com (http://www.careersite.com/perl/employer/vrui?pid=282) that you have to register to access, but I found it helpful for finding the names of companies. I also have a website that lists lots of companies in RTP, but I don't have it here.

Cost of living wise, we just had a couple move in next door to us in our apartment complex, and they are from Philly. They couldn't talk enough about how much cheaper it is to live here than PA. I will say that houses are cheaper the farther you go from RTP. It depends on what section of RTP that you work which will dictate whether you want to live in Durham (actually on the North Side of Durham, I think is where the nicer areas are) or Raleigh. Chapel Hill is much more expensive, but it is REALLY nice. Unfortunately, because the cheaper areas are like South of Raleigh and North of Durham, etc, it does present a bit of traffic to and from RTP from those areas. However, coming from PA, you'll probably think it's nothing! Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I think Michelle (shellbell516) will be able to help you more than me (i've only been here a year), but she is on 'maternity leave' as in she's having a baby today!! Bernadette (mb1197) can answer questions about north of Durham, and Kim (kam) has been here awhile and lived in Raleigh (or near) and is now moving to Durham (?? I think).

Wow ladies, thanks so much for the help!:D

Summer - $95/sq ft is spectacular!!! DH and I just bought for $130/sq ft, and that was cheap, and I still have a 60 mile RT commute to my job!! That is one of the reasons we are thinking of moving:rolleyes:.

Paige - Thanks for all the area specific info. I will definitely check out that link you gave. As long as I could live within 30 miles of where ever I worked I am sure I would be fine. Right now my cummute is an hour and, and with gas prices huvvering just below $3.00, I would take any breaks I can get.

Bernadette - As to what I am looking for in a job, I have been working in Manufacturing Support for the past year. It is a really hard job to explain, but basically I am qualified to run pretty much any analytical testing technique there is. I could also do cell culture, and Pharm Dev. I am not only open to Biopharm, but Pharm as well, it's just that I know Biopharm is booming up here. Before I got my current job I was working in an Environmental Lab doing analytical work.

Again I can't thank you all enough for all the information.:)

Hey Sha -

We moved here from Connecticut and were amazed how much cheaper housing is down here. We currently live near the airport (cheap, but there aren't any services on the weekend and we have to depend on Cary/Raleigh which is ridiculous). Also, traffic is getting to be bad over this way - as the economy is improving, more and more people are moving here.

We're moving to South Durham, down the street from IBM (http://www.google.com/local?hl=en&lr=&q=ibm&near=Durham,+NC&sa=X&oi=locald&radius=0.0&latlng=35993889,-78898889,4778926647780270588) and 3 minutes from Brier Creek which is a booming area, but still not all that crowded in comparison to other areas (http://triangle.citysearch.com/find/results/triangle/brier_creek/page1.html?init_search=1&). RTP is largely all businesses and woods. There are a few roads that are main staples of RTP: Davis Drive, TW Alexandar, Globe and Page Drive.

There are a few apartment complexes directly on Davis Drive (although traffic can be terrible - but not bad if you go against traffic) and some houses going up around that area. Brier Creek has a ton of apartments, townhomes and houses.

ETA - I feel like I know the airport/Cary/Brier Creek areas like the back of my hand (since I actually saw these areas being built in the 3 years I've been here) - don't hesitate to PM me if you want details!

If you could recommend an area to move to in the Raleigh/Durham area, what would it be? DH and I were looking at Charlotte, but realized that the triangle area would be better suited for his type of industry.
Hopefully we'll be up there in the next few weeks to check it out, but if we can narrow down areas to search in it would be wonderful. Although we don't have kids yet, schools are an important criteria. Thanks!

Hokie: It really depends on what you like. For good family type communities, I would suggest Cary, Apex or Holly Springs (I am a fan of Raleigh over Durham, though). If you want more big city, go for Raleigh or Durham or Briar Creek. We are building in Holly Springs and the big reason we chose there was because it is smaller (yet has all the things you would need within minutes) and it is more close-nit, just like our hometowns.

I am also in South Durham (Kam, you are not too far from me) and work in Durham. If I could afford it, I would live in Chapel Hill. If DH and I did not work in Central Durham we would have bought a house in the airport/Brier Creek area mostly because there are a lot of new shops and restaurants in the area and it is a central point to Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh. Though lately my trips to Chapel Hill and Raleigh are on the decline. When I first moved here 3 yrs ago I was so amazed to see how people just stuck to their own city and now I realize how it happens.

My one piece of advice - NC is a nice quiet place but is lacking in major city life. Huge adjustment for me but I am used to it now. The amount of house you can get for your buck is amazing.

hokiegirl
08-23-2005, 06:09 PM
I like the "city life", but also would trade it off for a good neighborhood and for good schools. Are Raleigh and Durham far apart from each other? I mean can I live in one area and work in another? Everything here is 15 min away it seems - whether it's driving to work, to the store, to the downtown area, so it seems like all I need is in close proximity so I'm unsure of how the layout is there. I am flying out for a weekend to visit with a realtor and tour around the area. Are there some great places to visit to give me a feel for areas that I shouldn't miss? Sorry to be a pain, but I figured the best thing to do was go to the source!!
Thanks.
Kam and Cynder - Thanks so much for the advice you've given. I'll have to look into those areas. DH likes the small town feel so I'll have to tell him about it.

Are Raleigh and Durham far apart from each other? I mean can I live in one area and work in another?
They aren't very far apart except at rush hours. I honestly would say that you really don't want to purchase a house then find a job. You said your DH's 'industry' before, so I'm going to assume that it is somewhat science/business related. There is alot of research/science/engineering in Research Triangle Park (I described the location to Sha), but RTP is pretty spread out.

I have a friend that works in Pharm on the North Side of Durham, and she lives in Raleigh. However, she was so used to really bad traffic from where she was living before that a 45min drive one way isn't bad for her where she is taking highways not the Interstate.

It would be my worst nightmare to live South of Raleigh and work even in the Raleigh side of RTP. Michelle (shellbell516) does, and she is okay with it, so it is really my preference. However, I would NEVER want to live south of Raleigh and work on the Durham side of RTP or in Durham. I live on the west side of Raleigh right beside I40. I am 10 miles away from my work (raleigh side RTP), and in the morning, the traffic is Southeast of me. It usually takes 15-20 min to get there unless there is a wreck, then it can take 30-45 minutes. In the traffic area of I40SE of where I am, it is not pretty. At night, I stay at work until 6:15-7pm, b/c it is just not worth getting on the interstate. From 4:30-6pm, it is definitely 45 minutes to my apartment, and much worse than that further on down.

The area is just a bit tricky for work verses living depending on what you do. I would think that Real Estate agents aren't going to look in every town/suburb/area around here either, but I guess if it is a company they might have specialists in all the areas. Maybe since we do rent, I don't know, but when we moved here, we really lucked out in our location for DH and my work. Granted, had we been buying we could have never afforded to live in this zipcode, so I would have been screwed working in RTP. I also believe that time wasted in a car is the worst, so I hate adding time to my day when I could be a home.

cynder
08-26-2005, 09:12 AM
hokiegirl I forgot to mention, the Durham Public schools are not ideal. I am putting that kindly. Hope I don't offend anyone w/ that comment but they show the school board meetings on the news b/c of all the chaos and it's scary. We are going to be moving by the time that is an issue for us but if school districts are important then you will want to look at Wake or Orange Counties.

I second finding the job and then the house. Distance wise things will seem commutable but roads here are so wacky and there is no semeblance of a grid system. It may seem doable on paper but you never really know until you travel it.

hokiegirl

Thanks Cam!! As I get closer to visiting in 2 weeks I'll be sure to ask you questions!! This trip is more to see if this is "the area" for us. DH is working out of Charlotte and through my one visit realized that we liked some aspects but it wasn't "for us" so to speak. So, this trip will be to kind of drive around the neighborhoods, check out downtown and get a feel for Raleigh/Durham.
ardathpaige - Dh's industry is software consulting. A lot of consultants had said that RTP or the DC area was were he should focus on if he wanted to get off the road.
Long commutes are what I do now - my commute ranges from 45 min - 1 hour 15 min, so I'm used to that. Would like to not do it, but also used to it too. you're right though - time wasted in a car is the worse! Will definately look at job opportunities first since it sounds like a consensus that it should be done that way. Thanks!
cynder - wow, well that makes a difference on the areas we'll focus on then. The schools here in FL are the pits and a big reason we want to move from here to NC. Is it that Raleigh schools are better than Durham or is it taht they are horrible in general?

cynder
08-29-2005, 10:46 AM
I do not have children in the school system so I don't know a lot about school systems. I think Wake Co (Raleigh) schools are supposed to be better than Durham schools. I think it's the Durham high schools that are supposed to be really bad. Like I posted before, if I could afford it, I would totally live in Chapel Hill because the schools there are exceptional and the high property taxes prove it.

ITA with this. Even the "cities" aren't what I would call cities that you would experience elsewhere. We were in a world of shock, for example, when going to the train station and having it be smaller than our apartment! The other thing that seems to be lacking (it's there, but not exactly huge) is public transportation and there's a huge dependence on cars (or SUVs in this area).

As for schools, it's not a consideration for us (unless you're talking about obedience ;)).

Melissa ~ I had the date on my calendar! I posted this in the Money Forum, and I was wondering if you (or anyone) had any thoughts on my questions:

*Can you do the staggered report requesting through the annual credit report site, or to do that do you have to request it from the actual Credit Reporting Company?

*Is requesting one every 4 months (the stagger method) the best way, or should you just do it all every 12 months?

*If we aren't planning on buying anything anytime soon should we pay to get our Credit Score atleast 1 time (since it isn't included on the reports), or will we be able to tell looking at our credit report that what type of score we would have. Every time I have requested something that required looking at my credit, I'm always told I have good credit. However, could my score be low while a brief look at my credit be good?

mel7dog
09-01-2005, 08:44 AM
ardathpaige Wow, you are really into this $ thing!

1. I think you have to request it through the annual agency to get it for free, during the specified time (the next 3 months I think) If you want to get staggered reports you'd have to do those on your own $

2. I am not sure how often it is best to get your credit report, I guess it depends on a personal $ situation. I will go with 1 every 12 month unless we have some major $ changes, or open a bunch of new accounts etc.

3. The credit score isn't listed on the credit report, but I know one of the agencies offerd it for $5.95 (I think) I know when we bought our house we got our credit score for free. I'm not sure what the point of it is is you are not planning on buying naything soon, as long as your credit reports look good.

As you can see, I am still learning a lot about $!

I paid for my credit report about 6 months ago because we were plannning on buying a house. I noticed several old credit cards that were still open, so I made a bunch of calls to get those corrected. Now mine look great :)

Working on our credit (really my DH's credit) is something that has been going on for a while in our house. I worry about our credit due to credit card debt, which we are working double time to pay off. I did the same thing 2 years ago that you did and was amazed that I had several department store/regular store cards still opened that I didn't know about. I had cut them up, but not actually cancelled them. Of course, that wouldn't have happened if I hadn't gone '10% off when you open a card' crazy the summer before my junior year of college. Thank god I just used them once, and didn't run up debt on all of them which would have been so easy.

I think we'll go ahead and request them to make sure everything is in order. I'm trying to figure all this finance stuff out. We might request my DH's credit score. He only had 1 Credit Card that isn't a major card w/ a really small limit. If we have cleaned his credit up like we were trying to, I think we need to get him a major card to prove he can handle a slightly smaller limit.

And yes, I'm obsessed w/ all this! I just don't understand personal finance enough, and it keeps me awake at night!!

Honestly, I've found the scoring from the 3 in 1 reports to be off. I pulled our credit right before we applied for a mortgage (on a Friday) - all reports were in the 700-750 range for my DH and I. That next Monday, I went to three different places and they all told me our credit scores. They were between 720-770 for us both. It wasn't the end of the month and things were apparently current on both. You might want to pull it once just to see, but I wouldn't see the scores as anything written in stone.

I have heard good things about Hillsborough though I'm unfamiliar with the place. A lot of Dukkies who work at Duke live in that area. It's a little removed from Durham and Raleigh so it's a little isolated but I think the commute is the same so ideal for some.

Each city -Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh - have strong aspects of the college town. You can bypass that aspect by looking in certain areas of the town which a broker can help you with. There are some subdivisions in Durham (lower property tax b/c of this) that border on Chapel Hill and are under the Chapel Hill school district but these are highly conveted and are hard to come by.

I used to go to Raleigh alot in the past so it's been a while. I like Moe's Diner (http://), The Irregardless Café (http://www.irregardless.com/), and if you want $$$ Enoteca Vin (http://www.enotecavin.com/) (though our server sucked) and Second Empire. I've been to most of Camdynlyn's rec's and they are all great.

I have a ton in Durham and there are some that are nationally known. I have to say that was one werid thing about the place - all these excellent restaurants. DH and I have eaten really well... ok I'm hungry now.

North Carolina Basketball Family

A North Carolina family of basketball supporters headed out one Saturday to shop for the youngest boy's birthday. While in the sports shop the son picks up a Kentucky jersey and says to his older sister, "I've decided to become a Wildcat fan and I would like this Kentucky jersey for my birthday".

His big sister is outraged by this and promptly whacks him round the head and says, "Go talk to mother". Off goes the little lad with the jersey in hand and finds his mother.

"Mom?"

"Yes son?"

"I've decided I'm going to be a Wildcat fan and I would like this jersey for my birthday". The mother is outraged at this, promptly whacks him around the head and says, "Go talk to your father!" Off he goes with the Kentucky jersey in hand and finds his father.

"Dad?"

"Yes son?"

"I've decided I'm going to be a Wildcat fan and I would like this jersey for my birthday". The father is outraged and promptly whacks his son around the head and says, "No son of mine is ever going to be seen in THAT!"

About half an hour later they're all back in the car and heading towards home. The father turns to his son and says "Son, I hope you've learned something today?" The son says, "Yes, Dad, I have."

"Good son, what is it?"

The son replies, "I've only been a Kentucky fan for an hour and I already hate you North Carolina bastards."

I just LOVE this! I love my Tar Heels!

I just wanted to send thoughts to those in the Outerbanks!!

Also, as a total Hurricane Novice, do I need to be worried about this in Raleigh. Should I get a Hurricane Kit together, or is it not really going to be an issue here?

From what I can tell you are going to be coming in on US-1N, so you are in a perfect spot for Carolina Ale House in Cary.
1: Start out going NORTHWEST on US-421 / NC-42 / NC-87 / S HORNER BLVD toward US-1 BR. Continue to follow US-421 / NC-87. (1.2 miles)

2: Turn LEFT to take the US-1-BYP N / US-15 N / US-501 N / NC-87 N ramp toward RALEIGH. (0.1 miles)

3: Merge onto US-1 N. (32.5 miles)

4: Take the WALNUT ST exit toward CARY / BUCK JONES RD. (0.2 miles)

5: Turn RIGHT onto WALNUT ST. (0.4 miles)

6: End at
Carolina Ale House
2240 Walnut St
Cary, NC 27511

Once you turn onto Walnut St, you are going to be heading into Cary Crossroads area. The Carolina Ale House is at the corner of Dillard Drive and Walnut basically. On that corner across from CAH is the Lowe's. In the shopping center is: PetSmart, BJs, Kohl's, Copelands, Sweet Tomatoes and Jack Astor's. CAH is in the front part where the restaurants are, and you should be able to see it.

However, I'm sure that Michelle and Summer can tell you more about actually getting to Walnut Street from US1-N as I only know coming from I440 and another street from Raleigh.

It would be okay with me if we went to another place that was quicker to Durham area for those there. That would be a haul for Michelle, though. I am still up for CAH if that is what we decide. YUMMY!!

I had to move a haircut to like 5pm where he is fitting me in w/ no blow out. So, I might not be there until like 6:30pm as I'll need to run home and blow dry my hair. Just save me a seat and go ahead and order me a water, so I don't have to wait so long when I get there :p! Summer, I'll order a beer as soon as I get there, so you don't have to wait for me if you don't want to!!

So, I've been thinking that it's time to go get my hair cut, but I don't know where to go. Do you ladies have any suggestions for a great stylist in the Durham or Chapel Hill area? I have long, wavy hair. I'm willing to spend up to $50 for a cut and style, but if I could keep it closer to $30, that would be great. I don't even know what a good haircut costs around here!

Any ideas? Thanks!

ETA: Also looking for a good (but inexpensive) place to have my nails done in Durham or Chapel Hill . . .

Soooo, I've been thinking that we need to do a Durham/CH get together. Possibly at Southpoint?!? I love all the restaurants down that area (especially Firebirds-- YUM!)! I would be willing to shoot for either late October or early November? I think that is also a good in-between for Greensboro folks! My good friend Dorothy (FutureGallucci) used to live in Greensboro and we met at Southpoint. It was about equal distance for the both of us.
