Carolina ladies, especially those near Charleston...several of us are going on weekend trips to Charleston and looking for recommedations. Since I know that local recs are usually much better the guide books I know we would all appreciate your input. The post is on Travel.
Thanks so much for all of your help!!!

Melissa: I have never been to Charleston (although we have been invited to PLENTY of weddings there). My hubby has been and often takes day flight trips to play golf there. He loves it.
I'm pretty sure I can make Saturday the 19th. Will it be lunch or dinner?

I'm pretty sure I can make it on the 19th as well. Are we including the hubbies or is it ladies only? Also, did we decide on lunch or dinner? Lunch would be better for me if it works for the rest of you.

There's CPK, Cheesecake Factory, Champps Americana, Firebirds Rocky Mountain Grill, Rockfish Seafood Grill, and Maggiano's Little Italy.
I think that's it.

I've only heard of two of those and one of them is b/c my second job is waiting tables at one of the franchise restaurants  y'all pick....
Maybe I should be more specific in case you don't call it CPK out here -- That's California Pizza Kitchen.

When did they get a Cheesecake Factory?? Man...see what I miss when I move!
Any of those resturants sound good to me, other than seafood. The smell just really turns me off. :p

I can go if we do lunch like right at noon. I have to be back in Raleigh for a 3pm Matinee. If that time is okay with everyone, that would be great!

Noon is fine for me.
I'd like to suggest California Pizza Kitchen because they have a pretty wide variety of food, and I don't believe it's as hard to get a table there as it is at the Cheesecake Factory. :)

I highly recommend Sullivans Steakhouse..It's our favorite place for steak and whenever we have guests in town we take them there. It sounds like it's the type of place you are looking for. It is a little pricey, but you specified upscale and that it is.
Heres the website: Sullivan's Steakhouse (http://www.sullivansteakhouse.com/charlotte/)

where exactly is Southpoint (ie what exit should I get off)??
EmilyBronte
11-14-2005, 12:20 PM
Southerner... if you are coming from the east, get off at exit 276. If you are coming from the West, get off at exit 274.
Exit 276 - make a left at the end of the exit, then a right onto Renaissance Blvd (this is the one at the far end of the mall, after you've passed Nordstrom, etc). CPK is around the corner (from the outside) from JC Penney, and to the right of Pottery Barn (I think that's the one right there, anyway).
Exit 274 - make a right at the exit and then a left at the first stoplight onto Renaissance Blvd. The mall will be on your left and for CPK I'd park nearer to JC Penney.
Hope that helps.
Also, I'll be there. We are going to Seagrove, NC, but we are leaving after CPK. Jim and DS will be at the mall, but they aren't coming to lunch - they'll just kick around until I'm done. See you then!

I need a cup size bigger and a smaller band too! I am coming from the south. We just moved here in April and I have only been to Raleigh 3-4 times and twice was only to the airport :o
My DH isn't coming.
Southpoint has all the normal shops that you'd expect at any mall. Part of it's sort of an outdoor promenade, and then there's a larger selection of shops inside.

Question for all you Durham gals... can anyone recommend a good dog boarding place. My regular place got booked for Xmas by the beginning of October!!!!! So I am scrambling to find a place that is not going to charge and arm and a leg and then some more just to play or walk with my baby dog.

cynder, maybe you should PM them. I don't know that they check in here often, esp. with the holidays coming up. But, alot of them have dogs. Wish I could help. Good luck!
A few places in Cary:

The one in Apex is Town and Country. They've been on the news a lot lately because they've been housing hurricane victims.

Question for all you Durham gals... can anyone recommend a good dog boarding place. My regular place got booked for Xmas by the beginning of October!!!!! So I am scrambling to find a place that is not going to charge and arm and a leg and then some more just to play or walk with my baby dog. I did research and contact Camp Canine in North Raleigh, and it looks great, but you have to be a member to even let your dog get a reservation which is like $75/year plus the cost of the boarding. They also seemed to fill up fast, b/c there was a wait list to be a member.
I'm not sure about Durham, but I did lots of research for the Raleigh/Cary area. I toured
Aristocratic Pets (Cary) ~ Horrible
PetHotel (Petsmart in Cary) ~ Good, but leo likes to go outside, and they are a totally indoor place.
Bowman Animal Hospital (North Raleigh right off I540) ~ Not impressed at all
leo actually stayed at after I did tour it, but we were in a pinch.
Pupsi, Inc (Cary) ~ Would not go back.
Our Boarding facility that we really like:
Town and Country in Apex. That would be a really long drive for you, but if you are in a pinch, atleast you know that someone recommends it. I toured there, and it is really nice. It is $25/day w/ a $6 charge if you want them to walk or let your dog have play or cuddle time. It took me awhile to get over how expensive every place is around here for Boarding, but after touring the cheaper places, it took me no time to realize that it was just something we had to do.
PM me if you want more info on Town and Country. Also, if you search on CitySearch for Kennels in your zip code, you could call and tour the places this week and might could get a reservation for Christmas, but definitely, you'd need to do it this week.
PS ~ KAM - While I was trying to remember the name of one of the places, I saw that there is a place in Wake Forest called Paws at Play that says they have 38 indoor private pet suites. You might try checking them out, since you said that one of your little ones can't handle the open runs.

Thanks, ladies! As usual you guys are a wealth of information. I have actually tried the Petsmart hotel in Cary one weekend when we had a free voucher but the drive to pick up was too much and to $$$ if I didn't have the voucher.
I live in Durham in the RTP area so Apex is not too bad. I'll check it out. We used to use a person in North Durham near Orange Co and it was such a pain to pick up and drop off so that's why I being so anal about distance. Plus DH will being dropping and picking and he doesn't have the luxury of time. I am not too crazy about a place that charges for walking or playing. I know it's a business but if I had a pet kennel you would have to pay me to not play with them. I love the place we ususally use so mental note to me to book them in July for Xmas.
Hope you all had a great holiday. Got myself to Southpoint on Sat and was surprised that it didn't feel crowded. Still, I am doing all my shopping online.
paiger
11-29-2005, 07:41 AM
I understand what you mean about paying for the playing. When we lived in SC, I had a place for $12 that let leo play outside all day w/ the daycare dogs. I had forgotten that coming back from a trip once, we took Hway 54 towards Apex to go pick leo up at Town and Country, and it wasn't too bad. There were only a couple of stop lights and no traffic. I think it took like 10-15 mins from that area, which is how long it takes me to get there from our apt in Raleigh.
Paige - thanks! I had looked at them but while their suites are private, they are "cubical" style so the noise would still be there. Piper is neurotic with loud noise hence why we have very little choices!
While we're at it, does anyone have any tax prep recs? I don't want some schmo who will just do a turbotax type of program (H&R Block, etc). I can do that. Thanks!

Well, since I am new to the area, I was wondering if someone could help me. My FH's birthday is in 2 weeks and I want to take him out for a really nice steak dinner. I'm looking for something a little nicer than Outback Steakhouse. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've eaten lunch at the Firebirds place at Southpoint and the one on Six Forks, but I had a salad, so I dunno if the actual food is worth the $$. Thanks for any help!
(Oh--BTW- We live in Raleigh kinda by where Capitol meets the beltline. I dunno if that helps anyone...I'm horrible with discriptions!) :o

I actually think that Ruth's Chris moved. Not sure where it is now but it isn't off of Walnut/Buck Jones anymore.
I second Firebirds. I have eaten at both the one at Southpoint and North Hills and both are excellent. I ALWAYS get the filet and it is to die for. It is grilled to perfection-- nice and crunchy outside and soooo juicy on the inside. Totally worth the money. The salads are good too. Oh and the Chocolate Peanutbutter thing is mouthwatering. Yummy. Got me all hungry. Maybe I will suggest this for this weekend!! :D

The Ruth's Chris is now off Harrison Avenue at Weston. There's also a Bonefish Grille, Moe's, and Starbuck's in the same place (just for point of reference). I've never been to Ruth's Chris but have several friends who love it.
My DH's favorite steak place is Sullivan's in downtown Raleigh. He thinks it's definitely worth the $$.

Steakhouses: I've also heard that Sullivans on South Glenwood is very good, although we've never ate there. Angus Barn on Hwy 70/540 area is also good.

I second Ruths Chris in Cary (it's between Harrison Ave and Weston Parkway - we've eaten there several times and all times good!). I'm not a big fan of the Angus Barn as the seating is very casual in comparison.

I've got to board Grits (my dog) while we are gone to NY and I am going to look into PetSmart in Cary (I have a free doggie daycare day there) and Town and Country (recommended by Paige). I REALLY like for them to take him outside but the thought of him having more interaction with other doggies more makes it sound better. I would really like to find someone to keep him but with all the holiday fuss, I won't even bother. I sat in bed last night and almost cried thinking that we have to board him in a place like that for that long (Thurs-Mon). Actually, we may have to take him Wednesday, depending on how early our flight is (I need to check that). Boo. It gets me down in the dumps.

^^ I would volunteer, but we are going to SC this weekend for the DH family Christmas. I'm sorry! We always get leo some of the extras eventho they are $6/choice. If we are gone for that long, we'll alternate him a play time or two and a cuddle time at night. So that except for the night he gets there and leaves, he usually has something extra.

Florida girl here with a couple questions (specifically for the SC girls) My DH and I are looking into moving to SC in the next couple months and are in the process of looking for jobs. We are looking at the major cities with Charleston being our #1 and Greenville/Anderson coming in 2nd. I was just wondering if there are any job sites or newspapers online that we could look for jobs in. Monster and Career Builder only have so much. Hello everyone! I am planning a destination wedding in Bluffton, SC this May. My fiance and I are located in Atlanta, GA, so we have most of our vendors from Atlanta. I refuse to pay any more traveling fees so I hope that you can help me! I have not found any resources that really list wedding vendors in Hilton Head, Bluffton, or Savannhah. Do you all know of any good sites?
This is what I am still looking for:
1. Minister/Officiant
2. Day of Coordinator
3. Make-up Artists
4. Rehersal Dinner Locations
5. Bridesmaid Luncheon Locations
Thank you so much! Any help is greatly appreciated!

X-posted from Pets:
I was wondering if any of you know of any Australian Cattle Dog rescues. I rescued one (Chapman) and found him a good home with a friend a few months ago and now he's taken to chasing her horses (which is what he's bred to do) but he's also chasing her neighbor's cows and calves and he's getting pretty pissed - he was shooting over his head on Saturday. My friend has been forced to put him in a dog pen but he climbs up the sides and gets out. Now he's tied up and she HATES tying him up. She can't keep him inside because he's becomes very distructive. She/we really need to find someone who has the time to train him. He's really the sweetest dog and loves everyone. He's great with kids and other dogs. He's so gentle with other dogs and cats. He's housebroken and on heartworm preventative. He has not been neutared yet. I think he's about 8-9 months old.
If anyone has any help to offer it would be greatly appreciated. He's such a sweet dog and I'm so sad that things are not working out for him right now.

Planned Parenthood in both Chapel Hill and Raleigh are very active. They work together some, but are actually two independent state head quarters. You can sign up for the Planned Parenthood Action Network at http://www.ppaction.org/ppaction/home.html. They'll let you say in your profile if you want to receive activities from the local PPHs in your area. That's how I heard about all the activities before, but now I'm an actual volunteer so I hear about it from our Coordinator and the Action Network.
NARAL in this area seems good, too. I met people at the Durham Earth Fair from the Durham NARAL, then I've met lots of people from the Raleigh Area NOW and NARAL from the events I work at.
There is a 'Rock for Roe' or something going down in Chapel Hill this month, too. It is the same weekend as the event I posted as that weekend is the anniversary of RvW.
Anyway, PM if you have any questions. I'll send you a PM about all the activities going on right now as this is a very active time due to the SC Alito hearings. I'm going tonite to a volunteer Phone Bank.

I think there have been a couple of Charleston threads w/ good info. I did a search until 'Titles Only' and found some good suggestions. I think this thread has been dominated by NC ladies, so I don't know how often our SC counterparts visit. You might try bumping one of the Charleston threads.
DH and I got a good hotel on priceline in October. We did the Waterfront area and got a great price at the Marriott or something. If you aren't worried about price, any of the places actually downtown are great. Not having to deal w/ parking when you go downtown is definitely a plus as parking is atrocious in Charleston.
It's so beautiful that I really can't say there is anything that you shouldn't do. They have the 'Ghost Tours' which I've heard are kinda fun if you get into it, and of course the 'Plantation Tours' are supposed to be neat as well. When I lived closed to there we didn't really do any of that stuff, b/c we'd go down for the day and just hit the battery, shopping, the Market, etc. If you are going to go to the beach, I'm partial to the Isle of Palms area. It's beautiful, but a little farther away than Folly Beach (which is fun, too). Anyway, as for specific recs, I'd definitely check out those other threads.

Then, in this thread, I saw someone posted about the carriage rides, Magnolia Plantation and the Audobon Swamp Garden:

laurenc- my DH and i just moved to Summerville (about 20 miles outside of Charleston) yesterday! We're so new our furniture hasn't even arrived yet! We absolutely love it here. We are originally from West Palm Beach, FL and basically dropped everything and moved! My DH is opening a branch for Edward Jones Financial here. Let me know if you have any questions and I will try to help you. We love Summerville because it's very new and family friendly (even though we don't have kids!)Some places to stay away from are North Charleston (kinda ghetto) and Moncks Corner and Goose Creek (very redneck-y). We are renting a house in Summerville for $1200, 4/2.5 in a great neighborhood. The cost of living is just so wild for us! The same house would have been over $2000 to rent in WPB. So let me know if you need help and I will try! Christine
Cynder - we actually used paint pros and were very pleased with them. We got 4 quotes and there's was on par with everyone else's (well, with exception of the guy who wanted 4x anyone else). We asked them to get it done as quickly as possible so things would be done before our move and they were very accomodating.
One word of advice - feed the guys. We bought a bunch of subs from jersey mike's and it worked out really well. And they weren't taking any time to go out and find lunch ;)

For anyone who's local and interested in helping out....
My sister's going on a mission trip this summer to Equador. They are going to build things and teach English and a few other things. The group is having a fundraiser at Bunky's Car Wash tomorrow in Cary. It's located at the corner of Cary Parkway and Kildare Farm Road. They get a portion of the proceeds that the car wash makes that day.
I'm also talking with my husband to see what dates are still available to rent a shelter for a get together at the lake. I was think sometime in May or June. Does that sound ok? I figured we could make it a family affair that way we could visit with each other and still have help with the babies :)

Dry event may make me stay home and drink my wine, though. ;) I may or may not bring the dogs. The little one is a HELLION with other dogs so unless we want to see a chihuahua transform into Animal from the Muppets, they may stay home (or have my hubby come and take them on a trail).

Starting Easter weekend, I'm going to be traveling for wedding parties/weddings almost every weekend until June, so things are going to be crazy around that time.

Are we still making plans?
We are starting puppy training classes this Saturday from 1 - 2 pm for 8 weeks. I'm ok with coming on a Saturday after the class.
Sunday May 21st is out for me now. My mom and Grandma are coming to visit so we can do a 4 generation portrait.

Hi Ladies!
My husband and I have been trying to relocate to NC for a while now. We have family in Cary (my BIL, SIL and niece and nephew). We have two little girls though and cannot move there without my husband having a job secured. I am wondering if any of you have any suggestions, information about finding a job.
My husband is an attorney admitted to practice in NY. But he has a finance background as well. He is totally open to a non-attorney position.
He has been applying to jobs for a while now and actually did get one of them but it offered no health insurance for myself or our girls so we could not take it (the salary was low and while that was fine, we couldn't swing it with the added expense of health insurance).
Not sure if anyone can help but any suggestions any of you may have would be appreciated!
Thank you. :)

Dal ~ We recently relocated to NC from MD and what I did was look within my industry and make contact with a firm similar to the one I was currently working with. With him being an attorney I'd say go to the Bar Association and have him do some networking or go to those he might know in finance and begin networking...sometimes that helps the most.

Michelle ~ Yeah I did, sorry...I was soo tired lastnight after my drive home from NoVA for an event I was running.
That's cool, Jimmy is down in Monkey Junction in Commercial Sales...
***********
Tired...tired...doesn't begin to describe the zomby I am after the weekend I just came off of. I drove up to NoVA on Wed afternoon for a weekend long event for my Mom's Pagan Temple. I was the co-site coordinator and was on-site all weekend running the show. The event was at a campground, and it was cold and rainy all weekend...my cabin was COLD, so needless to say sleep didn't happen easily and mixed with alcohol it made for a looong weekend. The event was a success though and everything went off without a hitch! We did hit one minor snag on Sat afternoon with one of the members of ToSA (Mom's temple) and a teenage kid someone brought with them (you can use your imagination, I won't delve into it) that we had to address, but once that was taken care of everything went smoothly from that point on. Came home yesterday around dinner time and we went to McDonald's and Wal-Mart for grocery shopping, I did a little bit of classwork and crashed HARD. I am still tired today...

Hey all - re: the get together. I plan on coming with DH and Ally/Piper (our two dogs). It might be a short visit as Piper is terrible with other dogs (at 6 pounds, she's a bit skiddish with things that can crush her like a bug). If she's okay (we've tried to curb this behavior as much as possible), then we'll stick around. If she's not, we'll say hello and leave as no one wants to hear barking all day!

Jordan Lake GTG
Time: 4pm
Location: Ebenezer Church section of Jordan Lake State Park
Directions:
Jordan Lake State Recreation Area is located in Chatham County, 21 miles southwest of Raleigh off US 64, and can be reached via NC 751 or US 15-501 from Durham and Chapel Hill.
Traveling west or east on I-40 from Raleigh, exit onto US 1/US 64 west (exit 293A, Sanford/Asheboro). Take the US 64 exit (exit 98B) and travel west. The park office will be on the left just before the bridge over Jordan Lake.
Traveling east on I-40 from Greensboro, take exit 274, NC 751/Jordan Lake, go south on 751 and turn right onto US 64 to travel west. The park office will be on the left just before the bridge over Jordan Lake. If you are in Southeast G'boro then I think it's faster to go 421 South to Siler City and get onto 64 East. Then it's a straight shot to Wilsonville.
To reach Ebenezer Church from US 64, at Wilsonville, turn south on Beaver Creek Road/SR1008. The park entrance is approximately two miles on the right. New Hope Overlook From US 64, turn south on Beaver Creek Road/SR1008. After passing Ebenezer Recreation Area, turn right onto Pea Ridge Road and follow the signs to the park entrance, which is on the right.

Let me know what you think...
Hubby has already deemed himself "grill master" and apparently already planned things out. He would like us go ahead and bring the hot dogs and hamburgers for the day since we are right there. That way all the grill and all the food will be ready about the same time and those that come later won't have to wait. Also we won't have to worry about cooking times and difficult to gauge meats. We normally eat turkey dogs, but we will have regular hot dogs there as well.
If that's acceptable with everyone, then we just need to figure out the sides and stuff. We also have a cooler or two if they are needed.
southerner
05-01-2006, 12:42 PM
That sounds good about the meat, A. I'll give you some money towards everything.
So, how about this list of stuff?

Camdynlyn
05-01-2006, 12:50 PM
I can make some type of desserts (finger food desserts) like cookies and brownies.
I also like Turkey dogs although Hubby is anti (if he knows they are, which most of the time, he doesn't! ;) ). I think that sounds like a good idea. As for drinks, we can do lemonade, sodas and I can pick up sweet tea from Bojangles on the way to Jordan Lake, if needed.

Hi ladies! I hope it's okay that I'm sticking my nose into your thread, but I was wondering if you could help me out a bit.
DH and I just visited Raleigh for the first time this weekend and fell in love with it. We live in NY and have been talking for a while about leaving, but were never able to agree on where to go, until we spent a few days in NC. Now we're thinking that might be the place for us!
We can't move down until at least the end of the year or more likely early next spring (DH has to stay at his job through September or else he loses his year-end bonus, and we want to wait till March to sell our house so we don't get hit with capital gains tax). But between now and then we want to explore where exactly to move, what schools are good, what kind of jobs we can get, etc. This is where I need help! We have friends who live in Cary and friends in North Raleigh, and both are fans of their neighborhoods. While in town we checked out some developments in North Raleigh (Wakefield Plantation and some of the neighborhoods along Falls of Neuse Road). Can anyone recommend where else we should look? We think we probably will want to buy a lot somewhere and build a house. Does anyone know any good real estate agents?
Also, does anyone know any headhunters or placement agencies? I'm a practicing attorney and DH is a non-practicing one who may consider a law firm job if necessary.
Anything else we should know, or any other advice you can give us? Thanks so much!!!!! :)

DH and I live in Durham, and we like it here. Durham gets a bad rap because there are some bad areas in terms of crime, but if you live in the right place, you'll have no more problems with crime than you would in Raleigh. In terms of schools, the best schools are in Chapel Hill (which is a lot pricier than Raleigh or Durham). Raleigh also has pretty good schools. In addition to public schools, there are a lot of good private schools down here.
I really liked my realtor (Christine Khoury), but she focuses mainly on Chapel Hill and Durham. I don't know if she's very familiar with Raleigh. You can contact her, though, and let her know that Mickaella and Joe recommended her. I'm sure if she's not familiar with Raleigh, she'll be able to point you to a good realtor who is. When we were deciding to move out here, we visited and spent an entire day with her looking at neighborhoods. Her website is www.christinekhoury.com
As far as head hunters go . . . I don't know for law. My DH used a head hunter, but he's in IT. The job market down here's pretty good -- especially for IT, but I don't know much about law firms. Sorry!
HTH!
I live in Durham, my "area" is considered to be Brier Creek/RTP. My neighbors teach for Wake County schools so their kids will able to go to the just-being-built Brier Creek schools (although it may be possible to attend this facility without that connection, it's still unclear). I really like the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill areas, but as with any cities, there are good and bad areas. I think your decision could be based on where you end up working as depending on the field, it could be easy or not so easy to find a job. I love living in Durham but don't imagine liking it if I worked in Smithfield, for example!

Thanks everyone! Right now we're going to assume we'll be working in or near downtown Raleigh. For me, I figured that's where most of the law firms are. After we meet with some headhunters, we'll know more about that, but for now we just wanted to start looking around to see what we could find in what areas. We'll come back down in a few months to explore some more.

Hi everyone-
We are going to be in Wilmington next weekend and I'm looking for recommendations on everything- shops, restaurants, things to do and see. I would especially like to go out for some great meals. Anyone have any recommendations? We will be traveling with our 7-month-old, but she is rarely fussy so we won't be too limited- obviously, though, we will have to avoid bars and very fancy restaurants.
We will also be house-hunting while there so if any locals have any tips, those are welcome too- especially new homes communities with models open.
TIA!
