Do you think holidays are more commerically oriented in the US than other countries?

The reason why I'm doing a thread on this because I worked in an major department store for 2 holiday seasons as temp. Basically, they start way too early, especially for Christmas. It takes the fun out of the holiday. To me I rather spend with family and somewhere thats less commerical then US.
