We have a favorite Japanese Restaurant - Minado. It is a sushi-buffet restaurant, somewhat expensive, but v. unique and delicious. It is only open a couple hours a day, and the food is all beautifully presented. There are 2 locations in New Jersey, I have been to them both, and they are equally good.
Morris Plains - Rt 10 W.
Little Ferry - One Valley Road
Their extensive menu is found here: http://www.minado.com/menu.htm

We have a number of favorites, but these are probably my top two:
Risotteria (http://risotteria.com/), in the West Village (Bleecker St. between 6th and 7th Aves.) - scrumptious risotto, pizzas, salads and panini, including a very large gluten-free menu.
Entrees are $10-15 each. My DH and I usually split a salad, then each have a risotto or pizza and a drink, and dinner comes to under $50.
Tea and Sympathy (http://www.teaandsympathynewyork.com/home.php), also in the West Village (Greenwich Ave. between 12th and 13th Sts.) - English teashop with delicious afternoon tea, meat pies, salads and more.
Afternoon tea for two is about $40, but with sandwiches, scones, cakes and tea, it's definitely a meal. Pies are around $10-15, and entree salads around $10.
Both of these are casual, neighborhood restaurants -- jeans are fine. Neither takes reservations, and there are sometimes lines, but both are worth the wait!
