View Full Version : Do I have a yeast infection?

I just finished a 14-day antibiotic treatment for an infection in my eats and throat. And for the last week I've spent my afternoons refinishing my hardwood floors in a almost 80 degree house (had to turn the A/C off to keep dust from getting under/on the finish). It was a very sweaty job!
Today in the shower I noticed a sore on my genital area. I checked it out when I got out of the shower and it looks kinda like a pimple or a bug bite. I'm having a hard time believing a bug could get in there, though. I was just on WebMD and it looks like it could be a form of vaginitis, probably due to my upper respiratory infection, the antibiotics and/or the excessive sweating. I've never had a yeast infection before, so this is totally new territory for me, and it's hard to tell from WebMD if this can be left untreated or if I should go see my OB/GYN. (It seems unless you have a risk for an STD - which I don't - it's unclear what's a "must see doctor" case and what is a "will go away on it's own" case.)
So, if anyone here has any knowledge they can share or advise I'd appreciate it. Other than that bump, I feel fine so I'm not too worried. However, I don't want to ignore it and find I should have gone to the doctor.
Thanks!

I don't pretend to be an expert, but when I've had a yeast infection it is characterized by intense itching - not any sores.
What you might have is A Bartholin's Gland Cyst. info (http://www.coolnurse.com/bartholins_cyst.htm) I get these annoying things sometimes - every couple of years maybe. They're annoying but they go away.
But if it doesn't go away on it's own I would see your MD.

The symptoms of a yeast infection usually involve an unusual amount of discharge that is typically a cottage-cheese like consistency.
Even though you took antibiotics, which can cause YIs, the genital bump that you are describing is most likely something different. Who knows, it very well could simply be a pimple from clogged pores due to your housework.
Your best bet is to call your GYN for an appt so they can evaluate it. Good luck.

I was just talking to one of my good friends last week and she had something similar. She was in her backyard working and when she would get hot and sweaty, she'd sit in the hot tub to cool off. When she cooled off, she went back to work. A bump formed in that area. She had to go to the doctor to cure it. Our gyno gave her a prescrition for augmentin and told her to put a warm compress on it. That sounds similar to what you have.
I would contact your doctor. If it is the same thing, the longer you wait, the worse it will get. At least call and talk to your dr or dr's nurse and see if they think you should come in. HTH!

Thank you all for your replies! I read about Bartholin's Gland Cysts on webMD but the description and picture left me very puzzled! That link was a great help, Elizabeth.
Funny thing is, this is a lot like a bump I got on my eyelid several years ago. I let it go for months, and found I'd waited so long the only cure was to drain it by inverting my eyelid and making a small incision to drain the fluid. After that experience, I swore if I ever saw anything like that on my eye again I'd high tail it to the eye doctor!
I think I'll take the that painful lesson and all of your advise and call my doctor tomorrow. Thanks so much!!!!!!

TMI warning.
I haven't had a MD evaluate it and tell me that that's what it is, but I read quite a bit about Bartholin's Gland Cysts and everything jives w/ what I've had. Except mine aren't nearly as painful as some of the descriptions I've read.
The thing about these cysts is that b/c they are on a gland, they are always in the same place. On the right or left side, about halfway btwn hole #2 and hole #3 :) up on the side almost on your butt cheek.
And it is like a pimple, but larger and really hard. There is no way you'd be able to pop it.

I know this is going to sound really gross and perhaps TMI, but I've once or twice in my life I've had a ingrown hair zit on my vagina. Both times they were on the upper, "hood" part. Of course I freaked out and thought it was something horrible, but in my curiosity decided to squeeze it. Turns out it was just an ingrown hair (from shaving), a little hair even popped out.

I called the doctor this morning and have an appointment set for Tuesday. I thought about trying to "pop" it, but that just seemed too painful. I figure I'll let the doc check it out. Even if it's nothing, it'll only cost me $15. Piece of mind...priceless. ;)
