I grew up with short-haired cats, who all loved to be brushed. But I adopted a long haired guy over a year ago and he just hates it when I try to brush him. I've tried several different kinds of brushes, I am extremely gentle, and careful not to pull on any snarles he may have. But he absolutely hates it and cries within 30 seconds after I've started. Is this normal? Are there any tips to calm him down?

My sister has a long-haired cat (he's 13 years old) and he gets really upset when she tries to brush him. He's extemely mellow, but he will bite at her when she brushes him. She admittedly doesn't do it very often so I'm sure there are tangles that are painful for him. They just had him boarded last week and the boarder shaved his body so hopefully that will be the end of the tangles.

One of my friends also has a long-haired cat who can't stand to be brush and he isn't good at grooming himself. They have to take him to the vet a few times a year, so he can be put under and the vet can groom him. He needs to be put under b/c he tries to attack anyone who wants to groom him.

My cat Mel was a long-haired cat. Sadly, we had to put him down a couple of months ago due to bone cancer, but hopefully this info will help you. He would put up with brushing for a little while before he attacked the brush so I never got much accomplished. We tried shaving him ourselves but he didn't put up with that for long either. So we just took him in every couple of months and got him a Lion Cut (shaved). He was very good with them and never had to be sedated. It really cut down on the hair all over the house and he was very comfortable with the short hair. And he looked absolutely adorable to boot! I always had them keep his 'mane' long so that he wouldn't look dorky with it cut to just under his chin. He looked just like a little gray lion, so sweet :)
