I have a pomeranian/poodle mix. I feed her Purina, which I keep in a 10 gal bucket in the garage. Last night as I was getting her more food, I noticed some small light colored worms in her bowl. As I was getting more food out of the bucket, i noticed more worms. So I threw out the food, cleaned her dishes and the bucket. I bought some more food this morning, and I am going to keep it in the house.

Any idea what caused this??

Thanks!

I don't know what is causing it, but we keep Abby's dry food in a sealed container like Tupperware.

Is it a well sealed bucket? How old was the food? It would be highly unusual for it to have come contaminated, but I suppose it could happen.

Is there any chance it got wet at all or was it in a humid room? We feed our cat dry food and the food and water are both on a plastic mat in her room. I didn't realize it, but a piece of food was stuck on the back side of her food container and it had gotten wet. There were little white worms crawling around it. It was totally disgusting and I felt like a horrible cat mommy. Since then I've been keeping her food and water on separate mats to make sure no food gets wet.

Sounds like flour moth larva. We get outbreaks of those now and again. Totally disgusting. Check your bin to see if there are any holes and that it is airtight. Moths could be crawling in under the lid and laying eggs. Maybe put water in the bin, put the lid on, and tip it upside down to see if there's anyplace water comes out.
